One morning in 1996, the manager was tidying the cellar, when the door suddenly slammed shut and the lights went out. No matter how hard he tried he could not open the door. When his wife answered his calls for help, she found that the door was unlocked and easily pushed open from the outside. Another time, two electricians were working in one of the pubs upstairs rooms. They had rolled the carpet up and were taking up the floorboards, when one of them felt a hand tap him on the shoulder. Thinking it was his workmate he turned round, but found that his colleague was on the other side of the room. Believing he’s imagined it he went back to work and yet again he felt a tap on his shoulder. Standing up, he went over to his friend to ask if he was playing a prank, but the man denied any involvement. As he was about to return to his chores, both men watched as the heavy carpet, that lay rolled up by the window, was lifted into the air by an unseen force and dropped heavily onto the floor. The Viaduct Tavern opened in 1869, at the same time as the Holborn Viaduct from which it took its name. It was built opposite Newgate Prison and its court which later became the Old Bailey. The pub sits on the site of the Giltspur Street Compter, a small debtors prison and the cellar of the pub incorporated some of the prisons cells which can still be seen today. Hangings were a public spectacle in the street until 1868, the year before the pub opened. The condemned would be led along Dead Man’s Walk, a caged walkway between Newgate Prison and the Court. It is claimed that many were buried under the walk itself. The pub was opened in 1869 and quickly gained a reputation as a notorious ‘gin palace’. Violent fights were a regular occurrence for many years. In fact, one of the walls contains three paintings featuring a maiden representing agriculture, banking and the arts. The latter contains a hole caused by a soldier’s bayonet during a fight in the pub during the First World war. The pub has a toll booth which can still be seen today. In this, the landlord would sell tokens which could be changed for drink as he couldn’t trust his staff with the cash COALHOUSE FORT, TILBURY Coalhouse Fort is an artillery fort built in the 1860s to guard London from a sea attack by the French. It was the last in a series of forts at this point dating back to the 15th century. The area’s marshy ground meant that construction was slow and although when complete, the fort was equipped with large-calibre artillery and modern defensive facilities, the rapid pace of artillery development at the time meant the facilities were obsolete within a few years and constantly had to be up graded. Its last military use was as a training facility in 1949 9 THE OLD RECTORY SOUTHFLEET The fort was subsequently used as a storehouse for a shoe company before it was purchased by the local council, who developed the area into a public park although the fort itself became derelict. Since 1985 it has been leased to a preservation group who are restoring the fort. It was used in the opening scenes of the film Batman Begins In recent times, visitors have reported hearing the footsteps of people following them down the mile-long tunnel corridors when there was nobody there. Also, reports have been made of the sound of a heavy object being dragged along, of children’s laughter and of men playing poker, all within the empty corridors. Also within the tunnels, volunteers repairing the fort have been touched by unseen hands, manhandled by invisible forces and seen dark figures walking towards then only to vanish. In the fort’s washroom resides a poltergeist the volunteers have named Harry. Harry has never been seen but doesn’t like people going into his area. He is known to throw chairs, stones and lightbulbs across the room when anyone enters. The fort has so many ghostly sightings that regular ghost hunts are held here. At one, an apparition of a Solider, wearing full uniform and a gas mask, was seen in the tunnel. The Old Rectory was built by Thomas de Alkham, rector of Southfleet from 1323 and the chancellor of Rochester Diocese from 1327. It reputedly has two ghosts. The first is reported to be that of nun who was bricked up in the cellar and left to starve to death after she was caught in flagrante with a monk. The nun is reported to be a plump young woman no more than five feet tall. The other ghost is said to be that of a nurse, known as the Brown Lady. In the mid-19th century, the nurse was caring for a severely ill patient and it is suggested she tried to fiddle the patient’s will in her favour. The nurse was also walled up in the Rectory cellar where she died. In 1874, Thomas Legh Claughton, Bishop of Rochester, tried and failed to exorcise the spirit. There have been reports of rustling paper, eerie footsteps, hanging clothing moving of its own accord and the opening and closing of doors. The nurse has also been seen, sometimes only partially. In the 1800s, a servant said “I stood at the top of a small stair just outside the room, and to my surprise saw a nurse dressed in a clean staff uniform, standing at the end of the passage. Feeling little nervous about seeing her there, I very timidly walked down the three stairs and along the passage towards her. As I did so, she began to walk forwards as if to meet me, then she seemed to drift gently backwards, facing me all the time, until she reached the door of a small room at the end of the passage. There, to my surprise she vanished backwards through the door.” 10 CINEMA TICKETS HASSRA offer members cinema tickets at reduced prices The Cinemas that are part of the discount scheme are excluding Covent Garden Leicester Square Leicester Square Mezzanine, Marble Arch, Panton Street, Tottenham Court Road, West End and Whitleys Excluding VUE West End INDEPENDENT Outside M25 area only To locate your nearest Independent Cinema, visit www.independentcinematicket.com To view the current discounts available and book your tickets, visit the HASSRA website www.hassra.org.uk (or via the HASSRA pages on the DWP Intranet) Before you place your first order you will be required to register your details on the site so that we can set up an online account. The Club meets each month to try wines from different parts of the world. We meet at different locations in Central London – including Caxton House and Wellington House – to taste and discuss wine. Each event takes about 2 hours. We have a short presentation about each of the wines as we drink them. All regular meetings are on the 3rd Thursday of each month (The exceptions are March – 3rd Wednesday, October 3rd Friday and December 2nd Tuesday. There are no meetings in March and August). We aim to start each tasting at about 6pm and finish by 8-30pm. A presenter talks about the wines (usually between 8 and 10 wines) as we try them (yes we do get to drink them). People are encouraged to discuss the wines and give feedback to the presenter – no prior knowledge is required, there isn’t a test! The club also provides a cold buffet included in the cost of each event. Most events cost about £13-50 for HASSRA members if they also join the wine club. A higher charge is made to non-Club members. In addition to the regular meetings we occasionally hold “special” tastings. These are at a higher cost but feature rare or more expensive wines. In 2014 we held a vertical tasting of five vintage Krug champagne. DOWN HOUSE THE HOME OF CHARLES DARWIN Down House is the former home of the naturalist Charles Darwin. It was here that Darwin worked on his theories of evolution by natural selection. It is located in the village of Downe in the London Borough of Bromley The area was bought in 1651 by John Know to develop as farmland and he built he first house on the site. The house passed to his son Roger in 1653. The house changed ownership over the next few years having been sold to Leonard Bartholomew in 1743 and Charles Hayes in 1751. The property was acquired by George Butler in 1778, the rebuilt and enlarged the house after which it was known in the area as The Greta House. After Butler died in 1783 the property changed hands several times until in 1819 when it was acquired by Lieut.-Col. John Johnson, C.B. In 1837 Johnson emigrated to Canada and gave the house to the local vicar, James Drummond. In 1841, the Darwin family were looking to move out of their cramped London home and, having failed to buy properties in Windsor and Chobham, bought Down House from Reverend Drummond for £2200. Darwin made extensive alteration to the house and grounds, extending the bay window up through all three storeys. A strip of the field was made into a kitchen garden including the experimental plot of ground, and later the greenhouses. Darwin altered the service wing to the south of the main block, getting the kitchen area rebuilt with the addition of a butler's pantry, and a schoolroom and two small bedrooms on upper floors. 13 KIT’S COTY HOUSE AYLESFORD In 1846, Darwin rented a narrow strip of land adjoining Down House from the astronomer Sir John William Lubbock and named it Sandwalk Wood having planted oak trees and hedges. A new extension at the north end of the house was added in 1858. It was in the old study that Darwin wrote ‘On the Origin of Species’ for which he became world famous Following the death of Charles Darwin in 1882, the family rented the house out. In 1907, the Downe Girls School was established at the site. It moved to a larger premises in 1922. A new girls school opened at the site but was unsuccessful and closed on 1927. Following closure of the girl’s school, the house was purchased by the surgeon Sir George Buckston Browne and he presented it to the British Association for the Advancement of Science together with an endowment of £20,000 to ensure its preservation in perpetuity as a memorial to Darwin, to be used for the benefit of science and open to visitors free of charge. Down House was formally opened to the public as a museum in June 1929. The endowment proved insufficient and the expense of maintenance led to the British Association in turn donating the house to the Royal College of Surgeons, in 1953. In May 1954, Down House itself was designated as a Grade I Listed Building and in September 1988 the garden and Sandwalk was added to the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England at Grade II. Down House was acquired in 1996 by English Heritage and reopened to the public in April 1998. In 2009, the Darwin Bicentenary Project created a new exhibition on the first floor of the house, telling the story of Darwin's life and work. Down House, its garden and grounds are open to the public and English Heritage members. It is open daily from April to the end of October, and on weekends only from November until the end of March. As Down House is owned by English Heritage, entry is free for HASSRA members. Kit’s Coty House and Little Kit’s Coty House are the remains of two megalithic long barrows. The origin of the name Kit’s Coty is not known. For many years it was thought to be a corruption of Catigern a British prince. However, modern tests show that the barrows predate him by thousands of years. Long barrows are among the oldest surviving prehistoric monuments and were constructed between about 4000 and 3000 BC. They represent the burial places of the earliest farming communities in Britain, and acted as important ritual sites for local communities. The most distinctive surviving feature of Kit’s Coty House is the H-shaped arrangement of three large slabs of sarsen stone capped by a further slab, which formed the main burial chamber of the barrow. The stones were originally buried at the eastern end of a long earthen mound, of which only traces survive. Earth and chalk for the construction of this mound was quarried from flanking ditches to the north and south. The mound was surrounded by a retaining kerb of sarsens, some of which may lie buried in the field. Little Kit’s Coty House, also known as the Countless Stones, is a group of about 20 sarsen stones in a tight cluster. They represent the remains of a burial mound which was seriously damaged in 1690, before any reliable records were made. It is likely that this burial chamber was originally covered with a substantial mound, as at Kit’s Coty House. In the 1880s, as concern mounted about damage to ancient monuments, Kit’s Coty House and Little Kit’s Coty House were among the first to be protected by the state, on the advice of General Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt-Rivers, the first Inspector of Ancient Monuments. Railings were erected around the stones to prevent vandalism. The Megaliths are owned by English Heritage. Entry to the site is free. SHEPHERD MARKET The area quickly became associated with upper class residents and up-market prostitutes. In fact, as recently as in the 1980s the then deputy Conservative Party chairman and author Jeffrey Archer met the prostitute Monica Coghlan in Shepherd Market During the 1920s, Shepherd Market was a run-down area, popular with writers and artists such as Michael Arlen and Sophie Redorovitch. Arlen rented rooms opposite The Grapes public house and used Shepherd Market as the setting for his best-selling 1924 novel The Green Hat, which prompted Anthony Powell to move into the area in 1926. Fortunes of War novelist Olivia Manning and her husband Reggie Smith lived at 50a. Shepherd Market is a small village like square in Mayfair located between Piccadilly and Curzon Street. It was developed in 1735-1746 by Edward Shepherd on the open ground called Brook Field, through which flowed the Tyburn River. The area was then used for the annual May fair from which Mayfair gets its name. The fair had moved to the area in 1686 having previously been in Haymarket. James II established the fair in the 1680’s, mainly for the purpose of cattle trading. Over the years the fair grew in popularity and size, attracting both rich and poor. Queen Anne tried to put an end to the fair but her successor George I was more approving. Edward Shepherd was a local architect who had designed the Theatre Royal as well as houses in Brook Street and Cavendish Square. He was commissioned to develop the site and work was completed in the mid18th century. It contained paved alleys, a duck pond, and a two-storey market topped by a theatre. The gentrification of the area in the eighteenth century killed the festival off. Next to Shepherd Market is Half Moon Street, where the fictional Bertie Wooster and his faithful valet Jeeves of P.G. Wodehouse's novels lived, and where in 1763 the real James Boswell (newly arrived from Edinburgh) took lodgings and wrote his defamatory diary. Curzon Street is home to Crewe House, originally built by Edward Shepherd, but now a company headquarters and one of the few eighteenth-century Mayfair mansions still standing. Mama Cass Elliott of the Mams & the Papas died at flat 12, 9 Curzon Place, Shepherd Market on July 28th 1974. Keith Moon of the Who died at the same flat on 7th September 1978. The flat belonged to singer Harry Nilsson. 19 Shops within Shepherd Market include Alfie Turmeaus, a tobacconist specialising in expensive cigars and Anderson Wheeler, a gun manufacturer, as well as assorted art dealerships, barbers, chemists, jewellers, photographers and estate agents. Restaurants in Shepherds Market include Al Hambra (Lebanese), Le Boudin Blanc (French) Iran Restaurant (Iranian) Kitty Fishers (British/Spanish) L’Artiste Mussel (French) Little Square (European) L’Autre (Polish/Mexican) Sofra (Turkish) Old Express (British) Ye Grapes is at 16 Shepherds Market. It was rebuilt in its present form in 1882. It has a restaurant selling British and Thai food. The Kings Arms is at 2 Shepherds Market. It is a Taylor Walker pub established in 1878. It sells a variety of real ales including Truman Scorcher and the Windsor & Eton range. The Market Tavern us at 7 Shepherds Market. It was built in 1735 as part of the original redevelopment of the area by Edward Shepherd. It was originally a butter shop but the exact date of when the building converted into pub is not known. EastEnders actress Wendy Richard MBE lived in the pub from 1948 to 1953. The pub serves Young’s bitter, Wells Bombardier, Shepherd Neame Spitfire and Adnams Broadside. Just around the corner from Shepherd Market, on the corner of Piccadilly and Old Park Lane is the very first Hard Rock Café opened in 1979. The restaurant contains rock and roll memorabilia including guitars owned by Eric Clapton, Pete Townsend, Bo Diddley, Slash, Kurt Cobain and many others. The guitar used by Jimi Hendrix at the Isle of Wight festival is insured for £4 million. What can you do? 20 LIVELIFE ‘GET ACTIVE’ CHALLENGE You and your group can decide what it is you want to do. It will depend on each group’s goals and objectives, but here are a few ideas of how you could use your grant, which might help you on your way. • Purchase some pedometers and set a walking challenge – such as a virtual walk from base camp to the top of Mount Everest. • Purchase a small piece fitness equipment for the office, such as an exercise bike and monitor miles • Use towards a trial at a fitness session at your local gym or pool • Entry fee for a sports team into a local league, such as 5aside football • Purchase equipment to support teams to enter local sporting leagues, such as bibs, balls and shuttlecocks • Put toward a team entry fee into a local fun run, 10k or for those of you who really want to push, a half marathon. You can train together and will get a real sense of achievement when you complete it as a team. In 2015 the Livelife Challenge saw colleagues up and down the country take part in a variety of activities, ranging from healthy eating days, setting up weight loss and fitness clubs, and purchasing fitness equipment to use in the office. This year we want more people than ever to get active. So this is your opportunity to get together with colleagues to do something that inspires you to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle. You set the pace, so it’s entirely up to you how challenging your challenge is. And don’t forget there’s a HASSRA Committee and Wellbeing Champion in most offices who are ready to help you get your activity under way. Why an activity challenge? Research shows that physical activity can boost selfesteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reduce the risk of stress, all of which will contribute to a happier, healthier lifestyle. Taking part in a daily activity doesn’t need to be too strenuous or time consuming and can be factored into your working day. By making basic changes to your daily routine you can make a real difference. Park a little further away and walk the extra to the office, take the stairs instead of the lift, enjoy a lunchtime stroll or for those who want to push themselves join together for a run after work. Exercise is free and easy, and can be done in your own time at your own pace. You can apply for a grant of between £50 and £150 by completing the application form. How much you get depends on the number of people taking part in the challenge. When completing your application, we would like you to consider three important things: Objective – What do you hope to achieve as a result of your challenge? Inclusivity – Is your chosen activity suitable to all those staff who would like to be involved. Do you need to consider a two tier approach to support both those less active and those who are already active? Sustainability – Is your chosen activity sustainable over a long or short period of time and how are you going to encourage staff to continue once the original grant has been used. You can obtain a Livelife Challenge application form on the HASSRA website. You will be advised within 10 working days if your application has been successful. By taking up the challenge you will be in with a chance of winning the Wellbeing Trophy which is to be presented at the HASSRA National Annual Awards Dinner in May 2017. Don’t forget to take some pictures of any challenge you take on. LONDON RUGBY CLUBS NUMBER 3 SARACENS 21 1962 and back-row George Sheriff an England from 1966 to 1967. The club enjoyed a particularly successful time in the 1970s when they reached the semi-finals of the National Cup. Saracens also won the Middlesex Cup beating rivals Wasps in the final. After some bleak years in the early 1980s, the club responded to the challenge of the Courage League and won the second division in 1989 with a 100% record. The next year they finished fourth in Division One. However, Saracens lost several top players to more prestigious clubs. Saracens were founded in 1876 by the Old Boys of the Philological School in Marylebone later to become St Marylebone Grammar School. Saracens amalgamated with neighbouring club Crusaders two years later. In 1892 Saracens moved from Crown Lane, Southgate, to Firs Farm, Winchmore Hill then played on nine different grounds before the move to Bramley Road for the 1939–40 season, although the Second World War prevented them from playing there until 1945. The club's name is said to come from the "endurance, enthusiasm and perceived invincibility of Saladin’s desert warriors of the 12th century". The fact that their local rivals were called the Crusaders may also have been a factor. The Crescent and Star appearing in the club's emblem are reminiscent of those appearing on the Tunisian flag. After their inaugural match against Blackheath, Saracens found it difficult to get games against first class sides as the facilities at Bramley Road were so poor. The 1992–93 season saw the leagues restructured with Saracens, along with three other clubs, being relegated to the 2nd Division. In 1993–94 Saracens finished third and narrowly missed out on promotion but the following year they finished as champions and were again back in the top flight. With the arrival of the professional game, former player Mike Smith became CEO and began to improve the ground and playing staff. Despite finishing second bottom in season 1995–96 Smith persuaded the RFU that there should be no relegation for the first season of professional rugby. In November 1995 Saracens gained the financial backing of Nigel Wray and he recruited the likes of Michael Lynagh, Philippe Sella and Francois Pienaar. Saracens moved to Enfield F.C.'s ground, Southbury Road. Despite starting with victory over title favourites Leicester, Saracens only finished seventh. SARACENS 1913-14 In the 1997–98 season, Saracens began a ground share with Watford FC and their 22,000 all seater Vicarage Road Stadium. The club only lost three games during the season to finish second in the Premiership and winning the Tetley Bitter Cup beating Wasps 48-18 in the final The club produced a number of England internationals in pre-professional era, including hooker John Steeds between 1949 to 1950, Vic Harding a lock from 1961 to In the subsequent seasons, Saracens tended to start well but found their squad depleted once the international games commenced after Christmas. 22 The arrival of head coach Brendon Venter in 2009 sparked controversy as he released 18 players within 48 hours and began recruiting South African players to his squad. His policy worked however, and they started with a 10 match unbeaten run. Saracens traditional postChristmas slump appeared the to kick in but an upturn in form secured Saracens' a Guinness Premiership Semi-Final spot with 3rd place. A late try and conversion saw Saracens defeat Northampton 21–19 to take them to the final. The 2010 Guinness Premiership Final at Twickenham pitted Saracens against the eighttime and reigning English Champions, Leicester Tigers, with Leicester winning 33-27 Saracens only missed out on top spot in the league because of the bonus point system. They beat Gloucester 12–10 to reach their second successive Premiership Final. In the Final, they again faced Leicester Tigers. Saracens dominated the first half, leading 16–9 at half-time. Despite almost constant pressure from Leicester, Saracens ran out 22-18 winners to become English champions for the first time. Watford FC activated a break clause in their ground share deal, which meant that Saracens needed a new home for the 2011–12 season. After looking at several venues in the area, Saracens took over the athletics stadium at Barnet Copthall, staying at Watford until redevelopment of Barnet had been completed. The new ground had 3,000 permanent seats and demountable stands to allow a capacity of 10,000. It included the first artificial pitch in English rugby union. Following sponsorship, the stadium is known as Allianz Park. In 2014-15, Sarries finished 4th in the League, qualifying for the play-offs. After beating first-placed Northampton 29–24 in the semi-final, Saracens met Bath in the final and went on to win the game 28–16, becoming the first team to become Premiership champions from a fourth-place finish. They made it a double, with a 23–20 win against Exeter in the final of the Anglo-Welsh Cup. They also reached the semi-final of the European Rugby Champions Cup In the 2015/16, Sarries finished top of the Aviva Premiership. The final takes place after The Londoner went to print. Sarries also won the European Cup beating Racing Metro 21-9 in the final. Since Rugby turned professional in the mid 90′s, many old established clubs have seen a demise in the amateur sections. However, Saracens continue to put out both amateur men’s and women’s Saracens teams on a weekly basis, and also have a strong mini rugby section. If your office holds a charity event, don’t forget to send the details so we can feature them in The Londoner and add the money you raise to our HASSRA London Charity Totaliser. MILTON KEYNES 24 THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG GARDEN PARTY With his father (band leader Ossie Nelson)’s help, he secured a short record deal with Verve Records and recorded the Fats Domino song "I'm Walkin'", "A Teenager's Romance" and "You're My One and Only Love". Thanks to exposure via his family’s TV show "I'm Walkin'" reached number 4 while "A Teenager's Romance" reached number 2 Nelson signed a 5-year deal for Imperial Records giving him artistic control over his songs. His first Imperial single, "Be-Bop Baby", in 1957 sold over one million copies in the USA and reached number 3. His songs were regularly featured on the Ozzie and Harriet show. Nelson ousted the old jazz musicians who had been backing him and formed his own Rock & Roll band including now legendary guitarist James Burton who later played with Elvis Presley. The band recorded “Pool Little Fool” written by Eddie Cochran’s girlfriend Sharon Seeley. The song reached number one in the US and was Nelson first top ten hit in the UK. Between 1958 and 1959, Nelson had more top ten US hits than Elvis. Eric Hilliard Nelson aka Ricky Nelson, was an American actor and singer. He starred alongside his family in the US radio and television series, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet between 1949 and 1966. He also starred alongside John Wayne and Dean Martin in the western film Rio Bravo. In 1961, tiring of his teen idol image, he officially modified his recording name from "Ricky Nelson" to "Rick Nelson" although he found it hard to shake off his old nickname He continued to have hit records until 1963 when his chart career stalled in the wake of Beatlemania and The British Invasion. Nelson began to move towards a country rock sound and was a pioneer of that style alongside Jackson Browne and Linda Ronstadt. However, he did not reach the Top 40 again until 1970, when he recorded Bob Dylan's "She Belongs to Me" In 1971, Nelson was invited to play at Madison Square Garden as part of a Rock & Roll Revival Show alongside Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and Bobby Rydell. Nelson came on stage with long hair and dressed in the then-current fashion of flared trousers and a purple velvet shirt. Although he started with his hits such as "Hello Mary Lou", when he played a country version of the Rolling Stones "Honky Tonk Women" the crowd began to boo. Some reports say that the booing actually started because police had raided that back of the venue but Nelson took it personally and left the stage. He watched the rest of the concert backstage and did not reappear on stage for the finale. 25 travelling. He also knew that Harrison was thinking about recording an album of Bob Dylan covers. The line “I said, hello to Mary Lou, she belongs to me” refers to two of Nelson’s single releases. Hello Mary Lou was his biggest hit while his cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘She Belongs To Me’ had failed to make the top thirty. The line “out stepped Johnny B. Goode. Playing guitar like a-ringin' a bell and lookin' like he should” refers to the shows headliner Chuck Berry who went down well with the audience by playing all his old hits including Johnny B Goode and doing his famous duck walk dance. The line “When I sang a song about a honkytonk, it was time to leave” refers to the country version of ‘Honky Tonk Women”, also known as “Country Honk”, which set off the booing. The single release of Garden Party became Nelson’s last US top ten hit reaching number 6. In 1985, Nelson began a comeback tour alongside Fats Domino. He again billed himself as Ricky Nelson and the set list was all the songs that he was famous for. He also released a greatest hits album, "Ricky Nelson: All My Best." His comeback was cut short when his plane crashed later that year. Nelson dreaded flying but refused to travel by bus. In May 1985, he decided he needed a private plane and leased a luxurious, fourteenseat, 1944 Douglas DC-3 that had once belonged to Jerry Lee Lewis. The plane had been plagued by a history of mechanical problems and on 31 December 1985 crash-landed northeast of Dallas, Texas, killing Nelson and most of his band. In response to the show, Nelson wrote the song “Garden Party”. The Garden Party was the Rock & Roll show on the 15th of October 1971 which took place at Madison Square Garden, New York. “Yoko brought her walrus” refers to John Lennon and Yoko Ono who attended the concert. The line “Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes” refers to George Harrison who was also present. Unlike John Lennon, Harrison attended the concert in disguise to avoid any hassle from fans. Harrison was a friend and neighbour of Nelson who was aware that Harrison used Mr Hughes as an alias when 26 LIVE MUSIC AT THE RIVERSIDE CLUB STAINES GARDEN PARTY Written by Rick Nelson I went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends A chance to share old memories and play our songs again When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name No one recognized me, I didn't look the same But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well You see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself And people came from miles around, everyone was there Yoko brought her walrus, there was magic in the air An' over in the corner, much to my surprise Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes wearing his disguise But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well You see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself Played them all the old songs, thought that's why they came No one heard the music, we didn't look the same I said, hello to "Mary Lou", she belongs to me When I sang a song about a honky-tonk, it was time to leave But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well You see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself Someone opened up a closet door and out stepped Johnny B. DARTS 29 BEGINNER’S GOLF DAY HORTON PARK GOLF CLUB EPSOM 18 April 2016 This year’s London HASSRA Darts tournament attracted a record turnout at Riley’s in Victoria. Last year’s men’s singles winner James Cornhill triumphed again beating Stuart Collins in the final after also beating former HASSRA National Champion Alan Graham in the semi-final, the overall standard of play was excellent. 8 London HASSRA members enjoyed a fun experience at Horton Park Golf Club on Monday 18 April. Arriving by car and train between 10 and 10:30 we enjoyed the club house coffee and bacon roll before picking up our golf clubs and meeting the Golf Academy PGA. Head Professional, John Terrell on the popular driving range. Special mention for Patricia Constantine who won the women’s singles and played in the men’s competition, if there are any more women players please do enter next year. The excellent professional tuition, which lasted over the allotted our, included John demonstrating the basic ‘mechanics’ of the golf swing -starting from the correct grip, stance, club position and alignment. It was interesting to see how he was able to hit the ball first and then hit the ground whereas most of us hit the ground and then the ball or didn’t hit the ground at all. But it was not all about just bashing balls. John helpfully addressed the need to think about the practice regime for gradual improvement, as with most sports. it is mind and body control that is the key to success. So if you love the darts and are interested in playing darts HASSRA is the place for you particularly as we are considering joining a winter league at Riley’s on either a Thursday or Friday night. If you are interested let our organiser stuart.collins@DWP.gsi.gov.uk know. At 12:30 we enjoyed a hot choice of lunch in the dining room without the need to change clothes (most golf clubs are moving with the times). My scampi chips peas and salad was even a bit too much, as the portions were very generous. Alan Graham and Dave Enever won the doubles competition beating newcomer Chris Groutides and his partner Narendra Pankhania who in turn beat the 5 times winners Stuart Collins and Eric Greaves in the semifinal. Then we tackled the 9-hole par 3 Academy Course at our reserved tee time of 13:30 with golf clubs, balls and tees supplied to those who needed them. The after play discussions and prize giving took place in the bar around 4pm and everyone agreed the day had been a great success and wanted to come again. At a cost to participants of just £15 per head it really was fantastic value The weather was kind, a bonus as the course was still drying out after the recent storms, and although playable will be much improved by our next Beginners Day on 13th June. Why not join us? You may also wish to computer search ‘Get into golf-Horton Park Golf Club’ and see more for yourself. 30 SPORTS DAY New for 2016! Tuesday 10th July Up, and to the office, where busy all the morning... At noon home to dinner and then to the office; the yarde being very full of women (I believe above three hundred) coming to get money for their husbands and friends that are prisoners in Holland; and they lay clamouring and swearing and cursing us…and I confess their cries were so sad for money… that I do most heartily pity them, and was ready to cry to hear them, but cannot helpe them. However, when the rest were gone, I did call one to me that I heard complaine only and pity her husband and did give her some money, and she blessed me and went away… The following extracts cover June to August 1666. It was a reworking of a famous series of adverts for The Guardian newspaper. Entitled 'The Whole Picture', the adverts showed people appearing to be engaging in criminal and/or anti-social acts, only for it to be revealed that they are actually helping someone else. A scruffily-dressed skinhead rushes at a businessman and appears he is going to mug him. A man also appears to be breaking into a car. Only the "whole picture" reveals that the bald man is in fact trying to warn him that someone is forcing his car lock while the "thief" is actually helping the businessman open his stuck car door. In the video for "Stand by Me", a shop appears to be being burgled, its window is smashed and people are taking away electrical goods, only for it to be revealed that in fact the victim of a motorcycle crash has gone through the window and is buried under the televisions. The video was filmed in Feltham. The 1960s shopping centre has now been redeveloped MOTORHEAD GOD SAVE THE QUEEN In 2000, Motorhead released a cover of the Sex Pistols God Save The Queen as the single from their album We Are Motorhead. The video shows the band playing the song on the upper deck of an open top London bus while driving around famous London locations including Trafalgar Square, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Bridge. The bus is driven by the Queen (or possibly a lookalike). Our House reached number 5 in the UK charts in 1982. It was also Madness’ biggest hit in the USA reaching number 7. It was the 13th of Madness’ 26 top thirty hits in the UK. The video, which featured the band acting out the song’s lyrics, was filmed in Stephenson Street in Willesden. The property sold in November 2015 for £585,000. ULTRAVOX VIENNA Vienna was Ultravox’s biggest hit, reaching number 2 in 1981 but famously kept off the number one spot by Shaddap Your Face by Joe Dolce. The moody black and white video was meant to evoke the film The Third Man. The band spent one day filming in Vienna. The gravestone featured in the video and is the grave of Carl Schweighofer a famous Austrian piano manufacturer. However, the majority of the video was filmed in London including around Covent Garden, Searcys Restaurant and the Gaumont Theatre in Kilburn (below) 35 TEN PIN BOWLING The Ten Pin Bowling joint London Regional singles and National Qualifier competition took place on Friday 13 May. Yet again London were snubbed by the Awards Committee and we remain the only HASSRA Region who have never won a national award. We await details of the other Region’s award submissions but cannot believe that anyone has done more for members in the last year than our volunteer of the year Rebecca Jones, or that any other Region offers a more comprehensive programme than our own. (The awards committee scrapped the ‘best HASSRA publication’ a couple of years ago rather than give an award to The Londoner). However, a good night was had by all and we again proved London’s prowess by being the last to leave the bar at some time Friday morning. 201 – 203 WARDOUR STREET Crackers Disco was a small club in Wardour Street, Soho which ran between 1973 and 1976. It was originally a gay club but was soon frequented by those looking to dance to something other than chart music. Although the club held no more than 200 people at most, it was influential on many DJs that followed having been frequented by the likes of Robert Elms, Norman Jay and Jazzie B. In the days before Saturday Night Fever and the disco music boom, the playlist at Crackers included the likes of BT Express, The Fatback Band and Brass Construction, before any of them hit the mainstream charts 37 The Vortex lasted just nine months but in that time hosted most of the top punk bands including Siouxsie and the Banshees, Generation X, Adam and the Ants, Sham 69 and the Boomtown Rats. The more violent aspects of some Vortex nights were recorded in The Jam song ‘A Bomb in Wardour Street’ with the line “I'm stranded on the Vortex floor, My head's been kicked in and blood's started to pour” A live album, called Live at The Vortex was released in 1977 and featured Vortex regulars such as The Wasps, The Maniacs and Bernie Torme, none of whom went on to any great success although Torme joined the new band of ex-Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan. The album was labelled Volume One but there was no second volume. Unlike many bigger disco venues at the time, Crackers had a more relaxed dress code and army surplus and jelly sandals were often the dancers chosen uniform. In addition to the normal night-time sessions, Crackers also ran Friday lunchtime sessions which were always packed. At the time, only restaurants were allowed to serve alcohol in the afternoons or late at night so, to get over the licencing laws, disco goers were given a spam sandwich on entry. In 1977, Andy Czezowski, who had been running The Roxy punk rock club, was looking to open a new punk venue. He had already come up with possible names in The Void and The Vortex. Having discovered Crackers and arranged for his new club to open there every Monday, Czezowski fell out with his partner Tony Draper and was barred from his own club before it opened Draper went ahead with his new partner John Miller, a nightclub bouncer. Crackers opened up as the Vortex on the 4th July with the Buzzcocks, The Fall and John Cooper Clarke. Also appearing unadvertised were the Heartbreakers, who were heading back to the US as their work permits had been withdrawn. In 2006, the site was taken over by Peter Stringfellow who opened a lap dancing club there called Angels 38 LONDON’S ONLY LIGHTHOUSE the chilli hotdog, pastrami on rye sandwich and their Shake One in the Hay strawberry milkshake. Fat Boys Diner was featured in the 1998 movie Sliding Doors. London’s only lighthouse is now home to Longplayer, a continuous 1,000-year long piece of music. Initially switched on for the millennium celebrations, the music will run uninterrupted until the 31st December 2999. In London Docklands, where the River Lee meets the River Thames, lies London’s only lighthouse. Built in 1864-66, the purpose of the lighthouse was originally as a testing venue for new types of lamps and lighthouse technology. At one time Michael Faraday, one of the most influential scientists of all time, carried out experiments in the lighthouse. Faraday was an expert in study of electromagnetism and electrochemistry, discovered benzene, investigated the clathrate hydrate of chlorine, invented an early form of the Bunsen burner and the system of oxidation numbers, and popularised terminology such as "anode", "cathode", "electrode" and "ion". However, Faraday’s only invention ever to be patented was a new type of chimney designed to stop lamp gases combusting. It was designed in the London Lighthouse. The lighthouse is located in an area called Trinity Buoy Wharf. For nearly 200 years the Corporation of Trinity House of Deptford Strong used this land as a light-boat dock, buoy storage facility and maintenance depot, as well as for testing new lighthouse technologies. By 1910 the wharf was so busy maintaining buoys and lightships from around the South and East coasts that it was employing around 150 people, including platers, riveters, carpenters and tinsmiths. In 1988 the wharf was closed, and the future of the area looked uncertain, but in 1996 a private company took control of the site on a long lease, and started to develop the area as a “centre for the arts and cultural activities”. Trinity Buoy Wharf, is a 10-minute walk from East India Dock DLR station, or a 15-minute walk from Canning Town station. Alternatively, there is a regular shuttle boat service that takes you straight to the wharf from North Greenwich pier. FRED OLSEN CRUISE LINES HASSRA and Fred. Their waitress, taking another order at a table a few paces away noticed that the man was slowly sliding down his chair and under the table, with the woman acting unconcerned. The waitress watched as the man slid all the way down his chair and out of sight under the table. Still, the woman dining across from him appeared calm and unruffled, apparently unaware that her dining companion had disappeared. After the waitress finished taking the order, she came over to the table and said to the woman, 'Pardon me, ma'am, but I think your husband just slid under the table.' The woman calmly looked up at her and replied firmly, 'No he didn't. He just walked in the door.' SUMMER PARTY
