Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Announces JazzFest Main Stage Lineup
(Sioux Falls - 4/17/14) - Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues announces their full main stage lineup for JazzFest
2014 - July 17-19.
Executive Director, Robert Joyce said, "This is our 23rd celebration of Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues and the
festival keeps getting more amazing each year. The diversity of the artists in the line-up for JazzFest in
2014 are strong—and when you couple the headlining acts of George Thorogood, Gov't Mule and Gary
Clark Jr., you’re bringing together some of the best of the history of blues and rock with some of the best
of the future of blues and rock. Traditional jazz, hard hitting blues, funk and soul, costumes, themes, and
musical favorites, JazzFest 2014 is going to be three days of great fun!”
The generous gift donation from Midcontinent Communications has made the performances
of George Thorogood and the Destroyers and Gary Clark Jr. possible.
JazzFest Jazz Camp with Wycliffe Gordon - jazzfestsiouxfalls.com & wycliffegordon.com
The top band from JazzFest Jazz Camp will be joining Wycliffe Gordon for a grand performance. Wycliffe
Gordon has been named "Trombonist of the Year" by the Jazz Journalists Association nine times since
2000. Gordon, who can play 22 additional instruments, has had an extraordinary career as a performer,
conductor, composer, arranger, and educator. He is one of America's most persuasive and committed
music educators, and currently serves on the faculty of the Jazz Arts Program at Manhattan School of
Music.
Dakota Jazz Collective -
Dakota Jazz Collective is a Sioux Falls-based ensemble rooted in the classic and contemporary
sounds of jazz. Featuring a horn driven ensemble, members of DJC have developed a strong
reputation as some of the region’s finest and most recognized jazz musicians. Celebrating the
local jazz scene, committed to jazz education, and performing across the region, Dakota Jazz
Collective shares their passion for jazz with every performance.
Brandon Sprague Blues guitarist and composer Brandon Sprague hails from Deadwood, South Dakota. Brandon
performed at JazzFest in 2012 and has released numerous albums on the family record label. His sound
is reminiscent of Jimmie Vauhgan with a bit of Springsteen tossed in. He’s performed weekly at the
Deadwood Tobacco and Cigar Bar for most of the last decade and has a strong Black Hills following. The
band just celebrated it’s CD release of original tunes entitled, “Edge of the World.”
Josh Hoyer & The Shadowboxers - joshhoyerandtheshadowboxers.com
Josh Hoyer and The Shadowboxers is a project formed in late 2012 in famed blues town Lincoln,
Nebraska. For the last 15 years, Hoyer has been very in demand as a performer in his previous bands, as
a solo artist behind the piano and as a session musician and arranger. Spending much of his time
booking and promoting in Lincoln at the legendary Zoo Bar and beyond, Hoyer is an influential part of
the funk, soul and blues youth movement.
His current 9-piece Soul band includes some of the areas most revered and accomplished musicians,
many of whom have toured nationally and internationally, teach music and are asked to back up bands
live and in the studio. The band’s sound and passion come from their deep respect, knowledge of and
passion for blues, Americana, soul, funk, and many other styles of music.
Kris Lager Band - krislagerband.com
Kris Lager started playing around the Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, area as a young teen guitar prodigy
garnering the attention of the regional music scene. Entering into his adult years, Lager formed a band
of friends and equally talented musicians and took his blues-based sounds to a more funky and modern
place. The Kris Lager Band has seen a lot of success in their non-stop touring, playing over 200 shows
each of the last five years. Kris Lager Band has developed a unique style with a varied mix of blues, funk,
soul, Americana, rock and zydeco.
Jack Brass Band - jackbrassband.com
The Jack Brass Band formed in 1999 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and have been growing strong ever
since. This nine piece ensemble embraces the traditions of New Orleans jazz, but at the same time
adding old time blues, rock, hip-hop, pop, soul, funk and Reggae. The crack of the snare drum, the blat
of the sousaphone, the blaring brass over it all tells you that the Jack Brass Band is an infectious
machine, one that drives crowd to their feet and commands them to groove. A truly unique sound and
experience, the band has been featured at festivals in Canada, as well as throughout the upper Midwest.

The Jennifer Keith Quintet - jenniferkeith.com
Vocalist & Las Vegas headliner Jennifer Keith is an American Classic and a descendent of a long line of
entertainers that began with her Great Great Grandfather B.F. Keith, the “K” in RKO Pictures, one of the
Big Five studios of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Many have described Jenny as “a pinup doll with a voice reminiscent of Peggy Lee meets Julie London”.
Her fabulous quintet is led by Mando Dorame, tenor saxophonist and Co-founder of world renowned
Royal Crown Revue; a band who is credited for reviving the swing movement in the 1990’s. Among other
credits, Royal Crown Revue has been featured in “Gene Simmons family Jewels”, “The Mask” with Jim
Carrey and have toured with Bette Midler. Jennifer Keith also traveled to Egypt as a guest of the US
State Department to perform at the Cairo Jazz Festival. Audiences will be thoroughly entertained and
transported back to a timeless era of entertainment!
The Kelly Richey Band - kellyrichey.com
Based in Cincinnati, Kelly Richey is one of the hardest working independent musicians out there, to date
logging an extraordinary 800,000 miles touring, and at one point in her 25- year professional career,
gigging a grueling 275 days out of the year. Richey started playing guitar at the age of 15. Today, at age
48 and a staggering 3,500 gigs later, she more than earns the title of Master guitarist. She has been
described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out”.
She has been listed as among the top 100 gifted guitarists by the Truefire Commuity (2011), and draws
comparisons to blues icons Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Richey has shared the stage with such
legends as Lonnie Mack and Albert King, and has opened for Joe Cocker, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter,
Walter Trout, Little Feat, Foghat, REO Speedwagon, George Thorogood, Average White Band, Warren
Zevon, and James Brown.
Richey is a serious, no-holds-barred axe grinder. Setting up her band as a power trio (drums, bass, and
guitar), showcases her muscular, incendiary leads and masterful guitar chops. Playing live is where
Richey shines, literally bringing down the house at every show she plays. Cognizant of the emotionality
of the music in her live shows, Richey steamrolls; she hits the audience hard and fast, grabs on and
doesn't let go. Hard rocking, blues-based and guitar driven, she blasts her audiences with jaw-dropping,
lightening fast riffs and a muscularity of playing that even many of the best male guitarists don't possess.
Her soulful voice, a big, powerful alto, provides the arc that completes the circle for a total sonic
experience that is not to be forgotten. Richey’s stage presence is powerful. The first few notes from her
guitar and you know you are in very competent hands; in particular, her effect on the audience is not to
be missed--- those who have never seen her play are stopped in their tracks, stunned and speechless.
Samantha Fish - samanthafish.com
Kansas City-based Samantha Fish has been on a major roll ever since she teamed up with Cassie Taylor
and Dani Wilde on Ruf’s 2011 release, Girls with Guitars, and fueled by the trio’s Blues Caravan tour of
Europe and the U.S., created an international buzz in the blues world. Later that same year she recorded
Runaway, her solo debut on Ruf, which mixed gutsy riff-blues rockers like “Down In The Swamp” with
the mellow small-hours jazz of “Feelin’ Alright,” while marinating her songwriting in the groove of the
Rolling Stones and even tipping a hat to Heart. “It’s all the sounds I grew up with,” she explained at the
time, “with my own spin.” Earlier this year Samantha joined labelmate Devon Allman for a sultry duet of
the Tom Petty classic, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” that appeared on Devon’s Turquoise CD and
accompanying video.
Hitting a receptive international blues and rock press, Runaway was hailed as a thrilling opening
statement, earning a string of rave reviews and radio airplay, climaxed by her winning the Blues Music
Award (BMA) for “Best New Artist Debut” in 2012.

From these hovering souls, who called themselves Here Come The Mummies, Professor Dumblucke
learned of the powerful curse that doomed them to wander the earth, seeking the ultimate riff, the one
that may allow their spirits to rest after eons of, as they put it, "banging out solid fly grooves, y'all."
Without so much as a hot bath, HCTM would open for P--‐Funk and Al Green, rock Super Bowl Village
2012, become regulars at The Bob and Tom Show and massive festivals like Summerfest, and make
themselves the darlings of sell-out crowds over wide swaths of North America (and little tiny strips of
Eurasia). Eddie Mummy, Java, K.W. Tut, Mummy Cass, Spaz, The Pole, Midnight, Mummy Rah, and The
Flu got the remainder of their minds and bandages together and realized that the world was ready for a
new HCTM record. The new collection, Cryptic, suits their elusive persona down to the ground.

Gov't Mule has been blowing minds since their eponymous 1994 debut. That album found the band
boldly transfusing new blood into old-school psychedelic blues-rock at a time when the genre was
largely ignored. Gov't Mule's stylistic grasp has grown inexhaustibly since. Fighting the trend in a
declining music industry, the band's fan base, too, has steadily expanded over the course of 15 studio
and live releases and thousands of performances - at first in small clubs and theaters, then at halls and
major international festivals.
Few bands have a reputation for making music as consistently honest, organic and daring as Gov't Mule.
Now the enduring group fronted by visionary singer-guitarist and Grammy winner Warren Haynes
returns with their first album in four years - their Blue Note Records debut Shout!, a breath-taking,
exploratory double-disc released in September 2013.
The inventive and incendiary musical performances throughout both discs spring from the jazz-like
philosophy and creative language the Mule's members have developed together. They're the rare rock
‘n' roll group with an improvisational heartbeat, which allows all four musicians to expand on the songs'
themes in non-formulaic ways. That quality distinguishes the finest jazz, blues and rock recordings of the
'50s and '60s, but is largely absent in modern music.
Today, Gov't Mule have become a human encyclopedia of great American music even while adding to
that cannon. And through it all Haynes has served as not only the group's captain, but as a beacon of
creativity and excellence that inspires fans and fellow musicians.

For George Thorogood and his longtime band The Destroyers – Jeff Simon (drums, percussion), Bill
Blough (bass guitar), Jim Suhler (rhythm guitar) and Buddy Leach (saxophone) – their 40th anniversary is
indestructible proof that staying true to yourself and the music can still mean something. And with a
catalog of iconic hits that includes “Who Do You Love”, “I Drink Alone”, “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One
Beer”, “Move It On Over”, “Bad To The Bone” and more, being able to share it with audiences is what
will always matter.
Over the course of sixteen studio albums (including six Gold and two Platinum), they would storm the
charts by putting their own stamp on nuggets by Hank Williams, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, John Lee
Hooker, Elmore James and more, while simultaneously bashing out smash GT originals that crackle with
humor and swagger. “I’ve always balanced one against the other,” George explains. “Back when we
were playing clubs before we had original material, I’d say ‘Hey, let’s play that Willie Dixon song.’ We
played them our way and audiences loved ‘em.
Ultimately, the 40 Years Strong Tour is 50% celebration, 50% declaration and 100% Thorogood
throwdown. But after 4 decades as one of the most consistent – and consistently unique – careers in
rock, can a guitar-slinger still at the top of his game choose a moment that sums it all up? “Stan Musial
was once asked, ‘What was the greatest day of your career?’ And Stan said ‘Every day when I walk onto
the field is the greatest day.’ I feel the same way,” George says. “Every night when I walk out on that
stage is the highlight of my career. I hit that first chord, the band kicks in, and we hear the audience

To sum up Gary Clark Jr. is more challenging every day. He’s a musical universe unto himself, expanding
at a nearly immeasurable rate, ever more hard to define — as a mind-blowing guitarist, a dazzling
songwriter and engagingly soulful singer.
With his debut album Blak And Blu he has just become the first artist ever recognized by the Recording
Academy with Grammy Award nominations in both the rock and R&B categories for the same album in
the same year, winning a Grammy Award the latter: Best Traditional R&B Performance” - “Please
Come Home” (from the album Blak And Blu). And the day after claiming those honors he provided one
of the highlights of the highlights-filled “The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the
Beatles,” with sparks flying as he dueled with Joe Walsh on an incendiary “While My Guitar Gently
Weeps,” Dave Grohl behind them pounding the drums.
But that barely scratches the surface. The album’s a rocket ride from the Mississippi Delta of a century
ago to multiple points still out beyond the horizon. Rock and R&B sure, but blues, soul, pop, psychedelia,
punk and hip-hop are also in Clark’s expansive musical embrace and insatiable hunger for inspiration,
which he’s internalized into music all his own. And his two acoustic blues performances on the
soundtrack album for the acclaimed movie 12 Years a Slave show the distinct talent and personality he
brings to his music.

WATCH THE SKY. You can keep an eye on the weather as well just
by looking up. The Midcontinent Communications Big Screen will

FOR YOUR SAFETY. If the festival needs to be stopped due to severe
weather, please walk to your car or shuttle bus pick-up and get to
a safe location as soon as possible. Storms can move fast, so don’t
dawdle…play it safe and wait until the storm passes to return to
JazzFest for more fun!

JAZZFEST HISTORY
The Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Festival, JazzFest, has become
one of the fastest-growing events in the city. The event is organized
by the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues, a non-profit arts organization
with the mission to increase the awareness of jazz and blues
in the community through musical events and education. Sioux
Falls Jazz and Blues produces JazzFest as an entertaining and
educational gift for the entire community and beyond.
JazzFest got its start in 1988 at a local acreage with a few
hundred people attending. Throughout the years, the festival
has had several different names, including “Jazzmatazz,” and
has taken place in several locations throughout Sioux Falls,
including the Great Plains Zoo and the Sioux Falls Stadium.

STAY COOL AND HAVE FUN!
DRINK LOTS OF WATER. Water is best to keep you hydrated, but
pop and other flavored drinks are also available. Pop and water
are available at vending locations throughout the park. Watch
the number of alcoholic beverages you consume as well. Experts
advise you to drink at least 12 ounces of water per hour in addition
to the other beverages you enjoy!
USE SUNSCREEN. We want you to stay all day and into the night,
so be sure to protect your skin and wear a hat if you have one
(or buy one at the Merchandise Tent). Sorry, no umbrellas are
allowed as they block the view for everyone behind you and
make for a grumpy crowd.
SEEK SHADE. Yankton Trail Park has limited trees, but if you need
to cool off during the day, check out one of the beer gardens or
the pop and water booth in the Merchandise Tent. There’s also
the always popular Rain Tent which provides a quick, cool way
to relieve the heat. It’s located near the Sanford Children’s
JazzQuest Tent.
WEAR LIGHT-COLORED CLOTHING. If you came ill-equipped to
handle the heat, go to the Merchandise Tent and get yourself a
hat, or a cotton T-shirt or tank. Cotton fabric allows your body to
breathe and helps you cool off as much as possible. Sunglasses
can help keep you feeling and looking cool, too!

JazzFest 2014. Novak will donate a portion of the

Los Lobos, Chris Botti, Derek Trucks, John Hiatt, Medeski Martin &
Wood, Shemekia Copeland, Buckwheat Zydeco, Spyro Gyra, KoKo
Taylor, Tower of Power, Steel Pulse, Buddy Guy, the late Bo Diddley,
Joe Walsh, Sheryl Crow and many other world-renowned jazz and
blues musicians and talented local and regional acts.

The Kelly Richey Band 7:30 PM
Based in Cincinnati, Kelly Richey is one of the hardest
working independent musicians out there, to date logging
an extraordinary 800,000 miles touring, and at one point in
her 25- year professional career, gigging a grueling 275 days
out of the year. Richey started playing guitar at the age of
15. Today, at age 48 and a staggering 3,500 gigs later, she
more than earns the title of Master guitarist. She has been
described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s
body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out”. She has been listed as among the top 100 gifted
guitarists by the Truefire Community (2011), and draws comparisons to blues icons Jimi Hendrix
and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Samantha Fish 8:00 PM
Kansas City-based Samantha Fish has been on a major roll
ever since she teamed up with Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde
on Ruf’s 2011 release, Girls with Guitars, and fueled by the
trio’s Blues Caravan tour of Europe and the U.S., created an
international buzz in the blues world. Hitting a receptive
international blues and rock press, Runaway was hailed as
a thrilling opening statement, earning a string of rave reviews
and radio airplay, climaxed by her winning the Blues Music
Award (BMA) for “Best New Artist Debut” in 2012.

For George Thorogood and his longtime band The Destroyers
– Jeff Simon (drums, percussion), Bill Blough (bass guitar),
Jim Suhler (rhythm guitar) and Buddy Leach (saxophone) –
their 40th anniversary is indestructible proof that staying
true to yourself and the music can still mean something.
Over the course of sixteen studio albums (including six Gold
and two Platinum), they would storm the charts by putting
their own stamp on nuggets by Hank Williams, Bo Diddley,
Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James and more,
while simultaneously bashing out smash GT originals that crackle with humor and swagger.

Josh Hoyer & The Shadowboxers 6:00 PM
Josh Hoyer and The Shadowboxers is a project formed in late 2012
in famed blues town Lincoln, Nebraska. For the last 15 years, Hoyer
has been very in demand as a performer in his previous bands,
as a solo artist behind the piano and as a session musician and
arranger. Spending much of his time booking and promoting
in Lincoln at the legendary Zoo Bar and beyond, Hoyer is an
influential part of the funk, soul and blues youth movement.
Brandon Sprague Blues Band 6:00 PM
Blues guitarist and composer Brandon Sprague hails from
Deadwood, South Dakota. Brandon performed at JazzFest in
2012 and has released a few albums on the family record label.
His sound is reminiscent of Jimmie Vauhgan with a bit of
Springsteen tossed in. He’s performed weekly at the Deadwood
Tobacco and Cigar Bar for most of the last decade and has a
strong Black Hills following.The band just celebrated it’s CD
release of original tunes entitled, “Edge of the World.” Sprague
has most notably toured with B.B. King. He has opened for
Neville Brothers, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Koko Taylor, Joan Jett, & many more.

JazzFest Jazz Camp with Wycliffe Gordon 1:30 PM
The top band from JazzFest Jazz Camp will be joining Wycliffe Gordon for a
grand performance. Wycliffe Gordon has been named “Trombonist of the Year”
by the Jazz Journalists Association nine times since 2000. Gordon, who can
play 22 additional instruments, has had an extraordinary career as a performer,
conductor, composer, arranger, and educator. He is one of America’s most
persuasive and committed music educators, and currently serves on the faculty
of the Jazz Arts Program at Manhattan School of Music.
Kris Lager Band 3:00 PM
Kris Lager started playing around the Lincoln and
Omaha, Nebraska, area as a young teen guitar prodigy
garnering the attention of the regional music scene.
Entering into his adult years, Lager formed a band
of friends and equally talented musicians and took
his blues-based sounds to a more funky and modern
place. The Kris Lager Band has seen a lot of success
in their non-stop touring, playing over 200 shows each
of the last five years. Kris Lager Band has developed
a unique style with a varied mix of blues, funk, soul,
Americana, rock and zydeco.
Jack Brass Band 4:30 PM
The Jack Brass Band formed in 1999 in
Minneapolis, Minnesota and have been
growing strong ever since. This nine piece
ensemble embraces the traditions of New
Orleans jazz, but at the same time adding
old time blues, rock, hip-hop, pop, soul,
funk and Reggae. The crack of the snare
drum, the blat of the sousaphone, the
blaring brass over it all tells you that the
Jack Brass Band is an infectious machine,
one that drives crowd to their feet and commands them to groove. A truly unique sound and
experience, the band has been featured at festivals in Canada, as well as throughout the upper
Midwest. If you like your music hot and spicy, the Jack Brass Band is just for you.

Vocalist & Las Vegas headliner Jennifer Keith is an American
Classic and a descendent of a long line of entertainers that
began with her Great Great Grandfather B.F. Keith, the “K”
in RKO Pictures, one of the Big Five studios of Hollywood’s
Golden Age. Her fabulous quintet is led by Mando Dorame,
tenor saxophonist and Co-founder of world renowned Royal
Crown Revue; a band who is credited for reviving the swing
movement in the 1990’s. Jennifer Keith has traveled to Egypt
as a guest of the US State Department to perform at the Cairo
Jazz Festival. Audiences will be thoroughly entertained and
transported back to a timeless era of entertainment!

Gary Clark Jr. 8:00 PM
Gary Clark Jr. is a mind-blowing guitarist, a dazzling songwriter
and engagingly soulful singer. With his debut album Blak
And Blu he has become the first artist ever recognized by the
Recording Academy with Grammy Award nominations in both
the rock and R&B categories for the same album in the same
year, winning a Grammy Award the latter: Best Traditional
R&B Performance” – “Please Come Home” (from the album
Blak And Blu). And the day after claiming those honors he
provided one of the highlights of the highlights-filled “The
Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the
Beatles,” with sparks flying as he dueled with Joe Walsh on
an incendiary “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,”. Rock and R&B sure, but blues, soul, pop,
psychedelia, punk and hip-hop are also in Clark’s expansive musical embrace and insatiable hunger
for inspiration. His two acoustic blues performances on the soundtrack album for the acclaimed
movie 12 Years a Slave show the distinct talent and personality he brings to his music.
Gov’t Mule - 10:00 PM
Gov’t Mule has been blowing minds since their eponymous
1994 debut. That album found the band boldly transfusing new
blood into old-school psychedelic blues-rock at a time when
the genre was largely ignored. Gov’t Mule’s stylistic grasp
has grown inexhaustibly since. Few bands have a reputation
for making music as consistently honest, organic and daring
as Gov’t Mule. They’re the rare rock ‘n’ roll group with an
improvisational heartbeat, which allows all four musicians
to expand on the songs’ themes in non-formulaic ways. That
quality distinguishes the finest jazz, blues and rock recordings
of the ’50s and ’60s, but is largely absent in modern music.
Today, Gov’t Mule have become a human encyclopedia of great American music even while adding to
that cannon. And through it all Haynes has served as not only the group’s captain, but as a beacon of
creativity and excellence that inspires fans and fellow musicians.

Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Announces 16th Annual Concert Series
(Sioux Falls - 4/5/2014) - Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues announce the 2014-2015 Concert Series. The
lineup for this new season will be five incredible shows with a wide range of musical style and
diversity!
Executive Director Robert Joyce says, “It’s been our reputation to provide outstanding music in our
series—from artists that have been exposed to our audience through JazzFest, or sometimes it’s a
new emerging artist just hitting the music scene. But the one constant for the Sioux Falls Jazz &
Blues season is it’s always cool music performed by gifted and amazing people.”

Jeff Lorber Fusion with Jimmy Haslip and Eric Marienthal - October 10, 2014 - 8pm Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater
Born in Philadelphia in 1952, Lorber began playing piano when he was just four years old. By his teen
years, he had hooked up with several local R&B bands, but his tastes trended more toward jazz when he
studied at Berklee College of Music.
After college, he relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he formed the Jeff Lorber Fusion. The Jeff Lorber
Fusion first honed their craft in the club scene and rapidly expanded their reach to a national and
international audience via a combination of complex harmonies, unconventional time signatures and
compelling rhythms. The group released their self-titled debut album in 1977, and quickly became one
of the most popular acts in the jazz fusion scene, due in large part to relentless touring and a string of
artistically daring and commercially successful recordings.
More than three decades after his earliest recordings, Lorber has come full circle. His new
recording, Hacienda, released in August 2013, revisits a sound he helped pioneer. The album takes the
experiment that he started with his GRAMMY®-nominated CD, Now is the Time, and his 2012 album,
Galaxy, up a notch with 11 exciting and energetic new compositions performed by some of the biggest
names in jazz today. Co-produced by Lorber and bassist/composer Jimmy Haslip, Hacienda also features
saxophonist Eric Marienthal, a longtime collaborator with Lorber and his collective. Other guests include
premier jazz-rock violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, drummers Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl, and an impressive
cadre of other stellar players.
Lorber’s music reaches a new level by crystallizing jazz, funk, and Latin rhythms with some killer
melodies that will certainly translate to live performance. Obviously, time spent touring together has
made Lorber, Haslip and Marienthal into a tight unit, which is evident from this latest recording.
Trampled Under Foot - November 21, 2014 - 8pm - Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater
Given their upbringing, it’s no wonder Trampled Under Foot have quickly become one of the
hottest up-and-coming blues bands on the circuit today. Siblings Danielle Schnebelen (lead vocals
and bass), Nick Schnebelen (guitars and vocals) and Kris Schnebelen, (drums) have a lifelong
connection with the blues. Growing up in Kansas City, MO, the hard-charging trio soaked up the
music of their parents, who were active in the thriving blues scene. After years of playing in
separate bands, Danielle, Kris and Nick decided to keep things in the family and formed Trampled
Under Foot (TUF). “The bonds are stronger with family,” Kris says. “You’re more familiar with each
other, that’s for sure.”
A pivotal moment came in 2008 when Trampled Under Foot headed to Memphis for the Blues
Foundation’s 24th International Blues Challenge and walked away with first place, proving to the
world that they’re a band to be reckoned with. Nick also took home the prestigious Albert King
Award for best guitarist. “When we won, I couldn’t believe it,” says Danielle. “It opened up a lot of
doors for us, and we got some really great gigs out of it.”
After several acclaimed self-released albums, Trampled Under Foot debuted Badlands in 2013 on
Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group. Toughened by years of nonstop roadwork, Badlands
reveals a musical sophistication well beyond the band’s years.
On Badlands, the band worked again with producer Tony Braunagel at his Ultratone Studios in
California. The drummer in the Phantom Blues Band, Braunagel plays some percussion on the
album and recruited veteran keyboardist Mike Finnigan (Jimi Hendrix, Bonnie Raitt, Etta James) to
play keys. Johnny Lee Schell, who also recorded the album, adds acoustic guitar to one track and
even mother Lisa Swedelund provides some additional backing vocals. John Porter mixed the final
results at Independent Street Studios in New Orleans.
Morgan James - January 16, 2015 - 8pm - Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater
For Epic recording artist Morgan James, honing in on the ideal use for her stunningly powerful
vocals took years of soul-searching and discovery. After joining a choir in junior high, James left her
Northern California home at age 18 to study opera at the Juilliard School. While the rigorous
conservatory training went a long way in refining her vocals and building her remarkable range,
James ultimately abandoned opera and devoted her initial post-Juilliard years to working her way
onto the stages of some of the city’s most legendary clubs—and into prominent roles on Broadway.
Now, with her Epic debut album Morgan James Live, James offers up a selection of songs that show
off her extraordinary voice and exquisite gift for merging soul, jazz, and R&B in a fresh and thrilling
new way.
For James, it took weathering her first few years as a struggling musician in New York City to tune
into the sorrow that instills so much of Simone’s work. “Honestly, I didn’t realize I could sing this
way until I was lonely, jobless, and listening to a lot of incredibly sad music all the time,” she says. “I
figured that since I wasn’t making money from my music yet, I should at least work in places where
other people were playing music—places like Cafe Wha? and Prohibition,” recalls James. “After a
while I started asking if I could sit in with the bands. Floored by her vocal chops, James’s impromptu
collaborators encouraged her to broaden her body of music. “I started out by learning all the licks
that Aretha and Nina did, but pretty soon I was on my way to developing my own style,” she says.
As she continued to advance her artistry and expand her vocal versatility, James eventually found
her way to Broadway. Making her debut in The Addams Family, she went on to perform in
Wonderland, the first-ever Broadway revival of Godspell and most recently in Motown: The Musical
playing Teena Marie. At the same time, James nurtured her solo singing career by playing to sellout
crowds at famed New York nightspots like Birdland Jazz Club, Le Poisson Rouge, Rockwood Music
Hall, Joe’s Pub, 54 Below and Dizzy’s. “It’s pretty grueling, working all day and all night, but it’s
really taught me the importance of stamina and taking care of my body and my instrument,” says
James.
James is currently working on her first full-length studio effort (an album she envisions as “a more
contemporary, pop/R&B record, but with its roots in blues and old-school soul”). James will
continue to bring her astonishing vocals beyond the stages of New York City and turn a wider
audience on to her enchanting sensibility as a musical interpreter.
Nikki Hill - March 13, 2015 - 8pm - Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater
If you haven’t heard of Nikki Hill yet, you soon will, and once you see her perform, you won’t forget
her. Hill and her band (who Nikki deems ‘The Pirate Crew') are climbing to the top of the roots
music scene step by step and leaving jaws on the floor along the way. With a no-filter energy, they
take all the flavors of American roots music and deliver a sound that will make you believe in rock
and roll again! Nikki’s gritty and raw voice with Stax soul dynamics, driving rhythm guitar from Matt
Hill, and a tight rhythm section provided by Ed Strohsahl and Joe Meyer come together and make a
sound that just sounds like the truth.
Hailing from Durham, North Carolina, Nikki comes by her Deep South soul honestly. Her musical
roots began while singing in gospel choirs at church as a child. A stint living in nearby college town
Chapel Hill introduced her to many different styles of music and the awareness of music (and more
importantly, unique and non-mainstream music) as a possible career. After pairing up with her
guitar-playing husband Matt Hill, they have made an unstoppable team and have established
themselves as roots rock and roll powerhouses!
Nikki Hill’s self-titled EP released in June of 2012 created a heavy and sudden international
underground buzz that the band has traveled with from state to state and overseas. Those 4 tunes
penned by Hill herself, proved that they have an energy that appeals to everyone who is ready to
dance, drawing crowds from every avenue at their shows. One club advertisement will call Nikki
“The Southern Fireball”, “the new soul sensation”, “amazing R&B shouter”, and even “the new
Queen of Rock and Roll”. Moving into 2013 with more songs, more energy, and a desire to play
their music for the world, the band is still gaining momentum and appear to have no plans of
stopping, as they are continuing to tour all over the United States, Europe and Australia after Hill’s
newest debut full length album Here’s Nikki Hill, released in April 2013, helps them spread their
message of rock ‘n’ soul to believers and new converts everywhere!
Kathy Kosins - April 10, 2015 - 8pm - Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater
ASCAP award-winning vocalist Kathy Kosins has won the hearts of critics and fans around the globe
with her eclectic musical palette that expands the rich history of jazz. Born and bred during the
Motown era of Detroit, she began singing and arranging background vocals for producer Don Was
in the early eighties, which led to her becoming one of the most sought after session singers. As a
lead vocalist she recorded for both Carrere (Sony) and Quality Records and later toured with
Was/Not Was.
In the early "90s, Kosins, a ferocious writer and arranger, fell in love with the freedom of the jazz art
form and her writing naturally evolved into a more traditional approach. Stints with the JC Heard
and Nelson Riddle Orchestras followed and led to a 1996 release of "All In A Dreams Work"
(SchoolKids Records), an impressive debut featuring a first rate collection of nine originals and a
cover of the Miles Davis composition" Four." Reported by over 250 Jazz stations, she reached the
top 20 in the Gavin.
Her 2002 release of "Mood Swings" (Chiaroscuro Records) continued to bring her recognition and
success at the national level. On her 2006 release of "Vintage," (Mahogany Jazz), she rediscovered
little known songbook gems which she placed alongside a few widely known, yet unexpected tunes
from outside the jazz tradition, which brought her glowing reviews from journalists.
Always a pioneer, Kosins decided to take a different approach in 2010 by releasing singles quarterly
under the new Mahogany Digital label, rather than an entire CD every few years. The tradition of
releasing singles runs deep in jazz music. Singles enable artists the freedom to create and record on
a natural timeline that corresponds with fan demand and tour schedules.
Kosins has recorded with many well known jazz and R&B artists to include Aaron Goldberg, Reuben
Rogers, Eric Harland, Peter Bernstein, Larry Koonse, Tamir Hendelman, Robert Hurst, Jeremy Pelt,
Jon Ellis, Howard Levy, Don Was, Martin Wind, Ben Wolfe, Michael Henderson and more.

Born in Philadelphia in 1952, Lorber began playing piano when he was just four years old. More than
three decades after his earliest recordings, Lorber has come full circle. His new recording, Hacienda,
released in August 2013, revisits a sound he helped pioneer. The album takes the experiment that
he started with his GRAMMY®-nominated CD, Now is the Time, and his 2012 album, Galaxy, up a
notch with 11 exciting and energetic new compositions performed by some of the biggest names
in jazz today. Co-produced by Lorber and bassist/composer Jimmy Haslip, Hacienda also features
saxophonist Eric Marienthal, a longtime collaborator with Lorber and his collective. Other guests
include premier jazz-rock violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, drummers Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl,
and an impressive cadre of other stellar players.

Siblings Danielle and Nick Schnebelen have a life-long connection with the blues. Growing up in
Kansas City, MO, they soaked up the music of their parents, who were active in the thriving blues

In 2014, after brother Kris announced he was leaving the band, Danielle and Nick solicited longtime friend and fellow KC musician Jan Faircloth to join them on drums.
Jan brought with him
years of experience as a musician in the Kansas City blues scene and provided a fresh take on the
band’s trademark sound. The addition of Jan inspired TUF to make other changes in their lineup
and the group added keyboardist Mike “Shinetop” Sedovic as an official member, turning the trio
in to a 4-piece powerhouse blues band and adding a new dimension to their already stellar
live performance.

Born in Waitsfield, Vermont, Grace Potter grew up in a family that encouraged her artistic pursuits in
areas from music to theater, the latter of which she was studying at St. Lawrence University when
drummer Matt Burr heard her singing at an open-mike night in 2002 and asked if she would form a band
with him. She declined, but when her high-school friend and bass player Courtright Beard enrolled in
their college, she reconsidered the invitation, and the three of them began to write and perform jazzinfluenced songs, Potter also taking duties on the Hammond B-3. Soon, guitarist Scott Tournet joined,
and the bandmembers, calling themselves Grace Potter & the Nocturnals -- thanks to their late-night
practice habits -- began to think seriously about making music their careers. When Burr graduated in
2003, they decided to move back to Vermont to some land that Potter's parents owned and dedicate
themselves more fully to their craft, replacing Beard (who chose to stay at school) with Bryan Dondero
in the process.
In 2004 they self-released their debut, Original Soul, receiving positive response and comparisons to
artists like Norah Jones and early Bonnie Raitt. This in turn garnered major-label offers, but the band
preferred to build its fan base by constant touring and festival appearances. Word of their electric
performance spread, and shortly after their second album, Nothing But the Water -- also self-released -came out in 2005, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals signed to Hollywood Records, with their third fulllength, This Is Somewhere, hitting shelves nationwide in August 2007. In 2010, Grace Potter & the
Nocturnals was released; Hollywood pulled out all the stops in order to break the band internationally.
Over the next year and a half, they toured incessantly, releasing a four-song Christmas EP, a live album
in the UK, and a digital download-only set recorded live at the Fillmore. Potter's duet with Kenny
Chesney, "You and Tequila," was nominated for Single of the Year -- Vocal Collaboration at the American
Country Awards, and the pair performed it at the CMA awards. In June of 2012, a new studio album, The
Lion the Beast the Beat, by Grace Potter & The Nocturnals was released.

Boz Scaggs is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. In the 1960s, Scaggs gained fame as a
guitarist and sometime lead singer with the Steve Miller Band. Additionally, he had several solo Top 20
hit singles in the United States in the 1970s, which included hits such as "Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle"
from the critically acclaimed album Silk Degrees. Scaggs continues to write, record music, and tour.
Fans who have followed Boz Scaggs’ remarkable career dating back to the late Sixties will instantly
recognize Scaggs’ characteristically deft touch as a singer. He brings a sly drawl, a conversational
intimacy, and an elegant delicacy to his work. His soul is effortless and deeply felt, never making a show
of itself, but unmistakably evident in every lyric he delivers.
You can hear a sense of fun, as well as the ability and willingness to wander in any musical direction
throughout Scaggs' newest album of A Fool to Care. The inspirational heart of those songs lies in the
sounds of Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma that played such a vital role in shaping Scaggs’ musical
sensibility. Ranging from the seductive New Orleans rumble of the title track to the wry social
commentary of “Hell to Pay” and a heartbreakingly wistful interpretation of The Band’s “Whispering
Pines.”
What ultimately communicates about A Fool to Care is how fully Boz Scaggs inhabits these songs. They
seem less like interpretations than realizations, proves that when you truly make someone else’s song
your own, you paradoxically restore something essential to it.

Marcia Ball, the Texas-born, Louisiana-raised musical storyteller has earned worldwide fame for her
ability to ignite a full-scale roadhouse rhythm and blues party every time she strolls onto the stage. Her
groove-laden New Orleans boogie, deeply soulful ballads and rollicking Gulf Coast blues have made her a
one-of-a-kind favorite with music fans all over the world. In 2010, she was inducted into the Gulf Coast
Hall Of Fame and in 2012 into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. She’s received a total of six Living Blues
Awards and nine Blues Music Awards (and has a whopping 42 nominations). She’s received five Grammy
Award nominations, including five of her six previous Alligator albums. Always a songwriter of renown,
Ball delved deeper into songwriting than she ever had in her career with her Grammy-nominated 2010
Alligator release, Roadside Attractions, creating one of her best and most personal albums.
The title track of Marcia Ball’s new album, The Tattooed Lady And The Alligator Man, is an irresistible
tale of true love at the travelling carnival. It’s a story that nobody but Ball could spin, filled with vivid
details, universal truths, and a rambunctious sense of fun and desire. With raucous horns punctuating
Ball’s legendary piano pounding and emotional, melodic vocals, the song kicks off the CD of eleven

GALACTIC was formed eighteen years ago in New Orleans, and they cut their teeth playing the biggest
party in America: Mardi Gras, when the town shuts down entirely to celebrate. GALACTIC is a
collaborative band with a unique format. It’s a stable quintet that plays together with high musicianship.
But though the band hasn’t had a lead singer for years, neither is it purely an instrumental group.
GALACTIC is part of a diverse community of musicians, and in their own studio, with Mercurio and
Ellman producing, they have the luxury of experimenting. So on their albums, they do something that’s
unusual in rock but not so controversial an idea in, say, hiphop: they create something that’s a little like
a revue; a virtual show featuring different vocalists (mostly from New Orleans) and instrumental soloists
each taking their turn on stage in the GALACTIC sound universe.
To make Carnivale Electricos, the members of GALACTIC (Ben Ellman, harps and horns; Robert Mercurio,
bass; Stanton Moore, drums and percussion; Jeff Raines, guitar; Rich Vogel, keyboards) draw on the
skills, stamina, and funk they deploy in the all-night party of their annual Lundi Gras show that goes till
sunrise and leads sleeplessly into Mardi Gras day. What pulls all the diverse artists on Carnivale
Electricos together into a coherent album is that one way or another, it’s all funk. GALACTIC is, always
was, and always will be a funk band.

Slim Man studied trumpet for the next 9 years, and also taught himself how to play piano and guitar.
After studying classical piano, composition and harmony at Peabody Institute of Music in Baltimore, MD,
Slim Man got signed as a songwriter for Motown Records. He had songs recorded by the Temptations,
Angela Bofill, and other artists. Slim Man also recorded a CD for Motown, which gave birth to his
signature style–a unique blend of jazz, soul and pop.
Slim Man debut CD End of the Rainbow was on many Top Ten lists for the year. Since that debut CD, Slim
Man has released 11 CDs, his latest a collection of live recordings called Slim Man LIVE. Slim Man has
also sung for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican on Christmas Day, 1999 and was nominated by the
Canadian Jazz Awards for International Vocalist of the Year two years ago.

While the 2013 Presidential Inauguration ceremonies may have featured such A-list talent as Beyonce
and Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys, it’s the voice of a classically trained mezzo-soprano
who has drawn the most critical acclaim.
Although musical theater and opera are two of Alicia’s passions, she also performs in a variety of other
genres and has been creating quite a buzz in the jazz arena, receiving great praise from jazz giants such
as Dianne Reeves and Monty Alexander. In addition to her solo career, Alicia regularly performs with
her husband in their African jazz band, the Olatuja Project. Alicia recently released her solo debut
album, Timeless, on which she is joined by 3-time Grammy-Award winner McBride, husband and bassist
Michael Olatuja, pianists Jon Cowherd and Christian Sands, Grégoire Maret on harmonica, Ulysses
Owens, Jr. on drums and David Rosenthal on guitar.

songwriter "Peter D. Harper" creates a heady mix of roots music through his creative use of the

influences, borrowing from Western and World music, Harper has created a highly original take on the
roots genre which many have labeled "World Blues". His innovative use of electronic enhancement
and feedback, breaks the traditional boundaries of the harmonica, giving his music its distinctive

Formed in late 2010, Tweed Funk’s national ascent has been driven by their horn-fueled, Memphis
flavored blues, roots, and soul. This Milwaukee, Wisconsin 6 piece soul-blues revue is fronted by Joseph
"Smokey" Holman, who recorded under Curtis Mayfield in the early 70's. Tweed Funk boasts 4
Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) Wins in the last 3 years for the band and its members.
Tweed Funk’s third CD, First Name Lucky, has launched the band to new heights: nominated for a 2014
Blues Blast Music Award in the Soul Blues Album category, reached #10 on the Roots Music Report Top
50 Blues Album Chart, and reached #11 on the Living Blues Chart.

“Jazzed” is a state of being – an anticipation of something special unfolding as you’re witnessing it, in
this case, in a musical context. They will be playing compositions by artists such as Cole Porter, Miles
Davis, Herbie Hancock and a host of other jazz and blues classics and standards. The members of
“Jazzed” will bring their own unique approach to this music. Drummer Bobby Gripp leads the group.
Gripp has been a longtime supporter of the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society and has toured with the
organization’s Jazz Diversity Project.

Hank has encompassed and assimilated a wide range of musical genres into his own distinct style. His

The members of Brian Masek & Friends are no strangers to JazzFest. Bassist Brian Masek and guitar
wizard Jesse Christen have each made prior appearances. Drummer Chuck Case and sax player Chris
Borchardt round out this high energy group and are on a mission to cure your fear of jazz forever. They
keep the audience on their toes by performing unique arrangements of high energy jazz/funk/fusion
tunes from artists such as Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, Jeff Beck, Dave Weckl and others, along with heavy
hitting blues tunes from Jesse’s multiple solo releases.

Hank has encompassed and
assimilated a wide range of
musical genres into his own
distinct style. His telling of the
story behind each song creates
an intimate, immediate and
relaxed atmosphere, honest
and informal, genuine and
vulnerable. All age groups, in small concerts or large festival crowds, relate
to his clear, sincere and poetic lyrics and music. His work with the Adams
Museum Deadwood Songbook included two CDs and a SDPB video nominated
for a Midwest Emmy. He wrote the soundtracks for two SDPB documentaries.
He has produced eight solo recordings of original songs, including World Beat
Cowboy, named “CD of the Year” by the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

Bassist Brian Masek and guitar wizard
Jesse Christen have each made prior
appearances. Drummer Chuck Case and
sax player Chris Borchardt round out this
high energy group and are on a mission
to cure your fear of jazz forever. They keep the audience on their toes by performing
unique arrangements of high energy jazz/funk/fusion tunes from artists such as Miles
Davis, Billy Cobham and others, along with heavy hitting blues tunes from Jesse’s
multiple solo releases. Brian Masek & Friends are very active in the local music
scene with various versions of this group and with their own groups.
“Jazzed” is a state of being – an
anticipation of something special
unfolding as you’re witnessing it, in
this case, in a musical context. They
will be playing compositions by artists
such as Cole Porter, Miles Davis, Herbie
Hancock and a host of other jazz and
blues classics and standards. The members of “Jazzed” will bring their own unique
approach to this music. Drummer Bobby Gripp leads the group. Gripp has been a
longtime supporter of the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society and has toured with the
organization’s Jazz Diversity Project. Joining Gripp on stage will be Dan May on
Piano and Chris Champion on Guitar.

soul. This Milwaukee,
Wisconsin 6 piece soul-blues revue is fronted by Joseph “Smokey” Holman,
who recorded under Curtis Mayfield in the early 70’s. Tweed Funk boasts 4
Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) Wins in the last 3 years for the band
and its members. Tweed Funk’s third CD, First Name Lucky, has launched the
band to new heights: nominated for a 2014 Blues Blast Music Award in the
Soul Blues Album category, reached #10 on the Roots Music Report Top 50
Blues Album Chart, and reached #11 on the Living Blues Chart.

Marcia Ball, the Texas-born, Louisianaraised musical storyteller has earned
worldwide fame for her ability to ignite
a full-scale roadhouse rhythm and blues
party every time she strolls onto the
stage. Her groove-laden New Orleans
boogie, deeply soulful ballads and
rollicking Gulf Coast blues have made
her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music
fans all over the world. In 2010, she
was inducted into the Gulf Coast Hall
Of Fame and in 2012 into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. She’s received
a total of six Living Blues Awards and nine Blues Music Awards (and has a
whopping 42 nominations). She’s received five Grammy Award nominations,
including five of her six previous Alligator albums.
An amalgamation of blues, rock, soul and
world music, multi award winning Australian
singer/ songwriter “Peter D. Harper”
creates a heady mix of roots music through
his creative use of the harmonica, and
the haunting drone of the didgeridoo. By
combining traditional and modern influences,
borrowing from Western and World music,
Harper has created a highly original take on the roots genre which many have labeled
“World Blues”. Harper is backed by his incredible Detroit based band “Midwest
Kind”. Over the years Harper has received multiple Australian Blues Awards
for “Male Vocalist of the Year,” “Song of the Year,” and “Acoustic Artist of the
Year.”(TREV). “Best New Artist Debut” in 2012.

Soul-Blues Guitar Slinger Hadden
Sayers, the road is a comfortable buzz
of underground fans and passionate
shows. In 2011, Sayers released the acclaimed Hard Dollar, featuring the single
“Back to the Blues,” which was nominated for the Song of the Year Award at the
33rd Annual Blues Music Awards. The album launched him back onto stages around
the country. More than 100 gigs followed, from New York City to Mammoth Lakes, CA.

The top band from JazzFest Jazz Camp will be joining
Allen Vizzutti for a grand performance! Vizzutti has
visited 40 countries and every state in the union to
perform with a rainbow of artists and ensembles
including Chick Corea, ‘Doc’ Severinsen, the NBC
Tonight Show Band, Woody Herman, and many more!
As Artist in Residence, Allen has taught at the Eastman
School of Music, the Banff Center for the Performing
Arts, Kansas State University, Ohio State University
and more. He is currently Artist In Residency at the
University of South Carolina.
Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Alicia Olatuja is
a Vocal Performance graduate of the Manhattan
School of Music Masters program. She made her
recital debut at Carnegie Hall and her professional
debut as Sacagawea in the World Premiere
operetta Corps of Discovery at the Opera Memphis.
She has also performed selected scenes at
Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center. Although
musical theater and opera are two of Alicia’s
passions, she also performs in a variety of other
genres and has been creating quite a buzz in the
jazz arena, receiving great praise from jazz giants
such as Dianne Reeves and Monty Alexander. In addition to her solo career, Alicia
regularly performs with her husband in their African jazz band, the Olatuja Project.

At St. Lawrence University in 2002,
drummer Matt Burr heard Grace
Potter singing at an open-mike night
and asked if she would form a band
with him. She declined, but when
her high-school friend and bass
player Courtright Beard enrolled in
their college, she reconsidered the
invitation, and the three of them began
to write and perform jazz-influenced
songs. Soon, guitarist Scott Tournet joined, and the band members began to
think seriously about making music their careers. In 2003 the band replaced
Beard (who chose to stay at school) with Bryan Dondero in the process. In
2004 they self-released their debut, Original Soul. Shortly after their second
album came out in 2005, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals signed to Hollywood
Records. In 2010, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals was released. Over the
next year and a half, they toured incessantly. Potter’s duet with Kenny
Chesney, “You and Tequila,” was nominated for Single of the Year -- Vocal
Collaboration at the American Country Awards, and the pair performed it at
the CMA awards.

When Slim Man, born Timoteo Camponeschi,
was 5 years old, his father showed him the
movie ‘The Five Pennies’. When Young Slim saw
Satchmo play and sing, he told his Dad, “That’s
what I want to do.” Slim Man studied trumpet
for the next 9 years, and also taught himself how
to play piano and guitar. After studying classical
piano, composition and harmony at Peabody
Institute of Music in Baltimore, MD, Slim Man
got signed as a songwriter for Motown Records.
Slim Man debut CD End of the Rainbow was on
many Top Ten lists for the year. Since that debut
CD, Slim Man has released 11 CDs. Slim Man has also sung for Pope John Paul II at the
Vatican on Christmas Day, 1999 and was nominated by the Canadian Jazz Awards for
International Vocalist of the Year two years ago.

Orleans, and they cut their
teeth playing the biggest
party in America: Mardi
Gras, when the town shuts
down entirely to celebrate.
GALACTIC is a collaborative
band with a unique format.
It’s a stable quintet that plays together with high musicianship. But
though the band hasn’t had a lead singer for years, neither is it purely an
instrumental group. GALACTIC is part of a diverse community of musicians,
and in their own studio, they have the luxury of experimenting. So on their
albums they create something that’s a little like a revue; a virtual show
featuring different vocalists (mostly from New Orleans) and instrumental
soloists each taking their turn on stage in the GALACTIC sound universe.

Boz Scaggs is an American singer,
songwriter, and guitarist. In the 1960s,
Scaggs gained fame as a guitarist
and sometime lead singer with the
Steve Miller Band. Additionally, he
had several solo Top 20 hit singles in the United States in the 1970s, which included
hits such as “Lowdown” and “Lido Shuffle” from the critically acclaimed album
Silk Degrees. Scaggs continues to write, record music, and tour. Fans who have
followed Boz Scaggs’ remarkable career dating back to the late Sixties will instantly
recognize Scaggs’ characteristically deft touch as a singer. He brings a sly drawl, a
conversational intimacy, and an elegant delicacy to his work. His soul is effortless
and deeply felt, never making a show of itself, but unmistakably evident in every lyric

WATCH THE WEATHER
STAY COOL AND HAVE FUN!
RAIN OR SHINE. The show must go on…well, almost. JazzFest is
rain or shine, but if weather becomes severe, the show will be
stopped until it is safe to continue. We’ll make announcements
from the stage if the situation warrants it.
DRINK LOTS OF WATER. Water is best to keep
you hydrated, but pop and other flavored drinks are
also available. Pop and water are available at vending
locations throughout the park. Watch the number of
alcoholic beverages you consume as well. Experts advise
you to drink at least 12 ounces of water per hour in
addition to the other beverages you enjoy!
CHECK THE TV AND RADIO. You never know when the forecast
might call for severe weather, but both KELOLAND TV and Results
Radio will be providing information about JazzFest. Tune into
MIX 97.3 FM or B102.7 FM to hear up-to-date reports on JazzFest
weather, or tune in to KELOLAND TV and find out more about the
weather outlook for the festival.
USE SUNSCREEN. We want you to stay all day and
into the night, so be sure to protect your skin and wear a
hat if you have one (or buy one at the Merchandise Tent).
Sorry, no umbrellas are allowed as they block the view for
everyone behind you and make for a grumpy crowd.
WATCH THE SKY. You can keep an eye on the weather as well just
by looking up. The Midcontinent Communications Big Screen will
also provide important information if nasty weather is possible.
SEEK SHADE. Yankton Trail Park has limited trees,
but if you need to cool off during the day, check out one
of the beer gardens or the pop and water booth in the
Merchandise Tent. There’s also the always popular Rain
Tent which provides a quick, cool way to relieve the heat.
It’s located near the Sanford Children’s JazzQuest Tent.
FOR YOUR SAFETY. If the festival needs to be stopped due to
severe weather, please walk to your car or shuttle bus pick-up and
get to a safe location as soon as possible. Storms can move fast,
so don’t dawdle…play it safe and wait until the storm passes to
return to JazzFest for more fun!
LOST AND FOUND
WEAR LIGHT-COLORED CLOTHING. If you came
ill-equipped to handle the heat, go to the Merchandise
Tent and get yourself a hat, or a cotton T-shirt or tank.
Cotton fabric allows your body to breathe and helps you
cool off as much as possible. Sunglasses can help
keep you feeling and looking cool, too!
The Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Information Tent is the lost and
found location at JazzFest. If you have misplaced an item, please
stop there first. If you are unable to find it at the festival, please
call the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues office at 605-335-6101. JazzFest
is not responsible for any lost or stolen property. LOST CHILDREN
OR PARENTS SHOULD REPORT TO THE FIRST AID TENT or locate
any Sioux Falls police officers located throughout the park for
assistance.
FIRST AID
Basic first aid is available on site. The First Aid Tent is located
on the west side of the festival grounds. For serious problems,
find any personnel from the Sioux Falls Police Department or
Sioux Falls Fire & Rescue to help you. Play it safe – always
wear sunscreen and drink lots of water to avoid heat
exhaustion.
RECYCLE.
IT’S THAT SIMPLE.
Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues (SFJB) is proud to
implement recycling of aluminum and plastic
at JazzFest 2015. JazzFest is working with the
Ecomaniacs in collecting these items - and
they will donate a portion of the proceeds
from recycling to the SFJB Scholarship Fund.
So make sure you throw your bottles and
cans in the bins marked recycling and give a
young musician the chance to learn!

SIXTH ANNUAL
RUN AND FUN WALK
JazzFest got its start in 1988 at a local acreage with a few hundred
people attending. Throughout the years, the festival has had several
different names, including “Jazzmatazz,” and has taken place in
several locations throughout Sioux Falls, including the Great Plains
Zoo and the Sioux Falls Canaries Stadium.
Free admission began in 1996, and attendance totaled 8,000
that year. In 1999, the festival expanded into a two-day event
with more than 30,000 attending. The festival reached its record
attendance in 2012 and 2013 with a crowd of 125,000 in both years.
A sample of artists who have played on the JazzFest main
stage include Susan Tedeschi, the Neville Brothers, Kenny
Wayne Shepherd, Los Lobos, Chris Botti, Derek Trucks, John
Hiatt, Medeski Martin & Wood, Shemekia Copeland, Buckwheat
Zydeco, Spyro Gyra, KoKo Taylor, Tower of Power, Steel Pulse,
Buddy Guy, the late Bo Diddley, Joe Walsh, Sheryl Crow, George
Thorogood and the Destroyers, Gary Clark Jr., Gov’t Mule and
many other world-renowned jazz and blues musicians and
talented local and regional acts.

Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Announces 17th Annual Concert Series
(Sioux Falls - 4/13/2015) - Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues announce the 2015-2016 Concert Series. The
lineup for this new season will be five incredible shows with a wide range of musical style and
diversity!
Executive Director Robert Joyce says, “I’m excited about the great season in store for 2015-2016.
The artists featured are really diverse and the quality of the music is superb. Gypsy jazz flavor to
rootsy authentic country blues, we have something for a jazz and blues music fan."

Mingo Fishtrap - October 9, 2015 - 8pm - Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater
Audiences can always expect spontaneity and heart from a Mingo set, where the band
intermingles fresh takes on songs from their extensive catalog with their twist on a few
select soul standards. Mingo's fourth full-length record, On Time blends punchy horns and gritty
Memphis grooves with N'awlins funk to create sounds steeped in both modern pop and sixties soul
sensibilities, that transcend both era and genre. “My first love is classic sixties soul, funk, and
Motown,” says Roger. As the band has grown, this early love affair has become a bigger part of
Mingo’s musical landscape. “There was a time early on when we were really into these crazy,
bombastic arrangements,” he explains. “Now it's more the song, the groove and the overall feel.”
What started as a casual jam session with friends blossomed over time into an impressive eightpiece ensemble that evoked fond memories of listening to soul music as a kid. While the band's
name comes from a crossroads just outside of Denton, TX, Mingo has long since extended its reach
onto the national music scene, sharing stages with the likes of Trombone Shorty, Parliament, Sting,
Little Feat, Earth Wind & Fire, Robert Randolph, Galactic, and MOFRO.
John Németh - November 20, 2015 - 8pm - Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater
For John Németh, Boise, Idaho is where his love for soul music began. It was the starting point for a
journey that’s taken him from his first gigs fronting a teenaged band to five Blues Music Award
nominations in 2013 alone.
On the harmonica, Németh began building on the style of rootsy heroes like Little Walter and Sonny
Boy Williamson. Németh’s first paid performance came in 1991, when he was hired to perform
drinking songs for a pinochle luncheon held by the Catholic Daughters of America before setting his
sights on the Boise club scene, where, for nearly a decade, he played seven nights a week at local
pubs, taverns, joints, and parties.
After opening a show for Junior Watson, Németh was tapped as tour opener for the guitar great, a
gig that took him across the United States, to Scandinavia, and into the recording studio for his
2004 solo debut, Come And Get It, featuring Watson.
Memphis Grease, the long-awaited follow up to Németh’s fourth solo studio release, embodies
everything that sets this artist apart from the revivalist pack: it’s innovative and unique while
epitomizing the absolute best of the genre. It’s a deeply forged combination of scorching
harmonica-driven blues and sweet blue-eyed soul ala the Box Tops or Roy Head. For Németh,
Memphis Grease is a natural concept that marries the techniques he honed in the Bay with the
intuitiveness that flows between him and the Bo-Keys. Together, Németh and the Bo-Keys take
modern soul from a simmer to a full boil.
The Jennifer Keith Quintet - January 22, 2016 - 8pm - Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater
Vocalist & Las Vegas headliner Jennifer Keith is an American Classic and a descendent of a long line
of entertainers that began with her Great Great Grandfather B.F. Keith, the “K” in RKO Pictures, one
of the Big Five studios of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Her fabulous quintet is led by Mando Dorame,
tenor saxophonist and Co-founder of world renowned Royal Crown Revue; a band who is credited
for reviving the swing movement in the 1990’s.
Some of The Quintetʼs performances have included The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas where she
currently headlines at The Chandelier, The Queen Mary, The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Hollywood
& Highland center, Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Hilton Casino in Las Vegas, The Wynn casino in Las
Vegas, Sydney Town Hall, the UKʼs 100 club, BB KIngs in NYC, Cicada Club in Los Angeles, The Edison
in Los Angeles, Cerritos performing Arts center, The Broadmoore in Colorado Springs, and Santa
Monica Pier. Jennifer Keith also traveled to Egypt as a guest of the US State Department to perform
at the Cairo Jazz Festival. Audiences will be thoroughly entertained and transported back to a
timeless era of entertainment!
Cyrille Aimée - March 4, 2016 - 8pm - Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater
Cyrille Aimée (Sur-real M-A) is a FrenchDominican vocalist and actress. Winner of the Montreux Jazz
Festival's Vocal Competition, the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition and finalist in
the Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition, Aimée is—in the words of Will Friedwald of The Wall
Street Journal—"one of the most promising jazz singers of her generation." In the same Wall Street
Journal feature (which included vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant), Friedwald declared both to be
“astonishing creative singers, with a brilliant sound, fresh ideas, impeccable rhythm and an overall
approach that honors tradition without being shackled to the past."
Aimée was born in Fontainebleau, France, to a French father and Dominican mother. Her
introduction to jazz was the result of the fortuitous location of her upbringing, the village Samoissur-Seine— the same place where legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt had lived.
In recent years Aimée has toured in many different contexts and has created several self-produced
recordings, including duet projects with Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo. Aimée's major label
release, It's a Good Day, features originals as well as covers of classics, the band is the result of
Aimee’s unique musical vision: bass, drums and three guitars (Brazilian, gypsy and jazz). Aimée's
hybrid of influences has resulted in a sound that's at once both fresh and enlivening, which is to say
nothing of her singular voice—destined to enthrall audiences for decades to come.
Guy Davis - April 15, 2016 - 8pm - Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater
Whether Guy Davis is appearing on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” or nationally syndicated radio
programs such as Garrison Keillor’s, “A Prairie Home Campanion”, in front of 15,000 people on the
Main Stage of a major festival, or teaching an intimate gathering of students at a Music Camp, Guy
feels the instinctive desire to give each listener his ‘all’.
Davis a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer. But most importantly, Guy Davis is a
bluesman. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to reviving the traditions of acoustic
blues and bringing them to as many ears as possible through the material of the great blues
masters, African American stories, and his own original songs, stories and performance pieces.
Davis' creative roots run deep. Though raised in the New York City area, he grew up hearing
accounts of life in the rural south from his parents and especially his grandparents, and they made
their way into his own stories and songs. Davis taught himself the guitar (never having the patience
to take formal lessons) and learned by listening to and watching other musicians.
Most recently, Davis had the honor of appearing in the PBS special on Jazz and Blues artist, the late
Howard Armstrong. He was an honored guest at the Kennedy Center Awards, in which his folks
received their medals, alongside other recipients like Warren Beatty, Elton John and composer John
Williams from the President of the United States.

“Cool” is a word that transcends time. It’s a word that continues to be used often, and rightly so.
It can be used to describe or define just about anything. We all had a cool pair of pants in high school.
Or a cool car, a cool stereo or a cool poster of our favorite musician on the bedroom wall. Cool was
the word we used.
Each year thousands of children in Sioux Falls and across the state of South Dakota are
inspired by the sounds and stories of jazz and blues music because of Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues educational
programs, which include: the Jazz Diversity Project, the All City Jazz Ensemble, scholarships for 6th-12th grade
musicians, free master classes and workshops with concert series artists, free tickets for youth
at-risk, JazzFest Jazz Camp, and JazzQuest, a free kid’s activities area at JazzFest.
