Like proper nutrition and exercise,
good sleep is key to your mental,
emotional, and physical wellbeing.
Experts recommend eight hours of
sleep per day. Too little sleep causes
irritability, weakens the immune
system, and increases stress.
Sleep normally takes place in five
phases (phases 1, 2, 3, 4, and REM). In
a normal sleep pattern, these phases
follow one another and all of them
together represent one cycle that
repeats three to five times per night
with varying lengths of individual
phases. Phase 1 is “light sleep,”
characterized by high-amplitude brain
waves that occasionally interrupt
alpha waves. Awake and sleep states
alternate during this phase, muscle
activity decreases, and eye movements
slow down. Some people may
experience falling sensations, which
produce sudden muscle twitches.
During phase 2, characterized by theta
waves in the brain, the heart rate slows,
the body temperature drops, and the
eyes stop moving. During phase 3, delta
waves appear in the brain, occasionally
interrupted by bursts of somewhat
faster waves. These bursts completely
disappear during phase 4. Together,
phases 3 and 4 are referred to as deep
sleep. During this phase, the eyes do not
move and there is no muscle activity.
People in deep sleep are very hard to
wake up. If this does happen, they are
completely disoriented and dizzy for
a few minutes. The REM phase occurs
during deep sleep. During this phase,
the brain emits the same waves as
during the waking state; sleep during
this phase is therefore also called
paradoxical sleep.
REM stands for rapid eye movement, which is one of the main or best-known characteristics of this
phase of sleep. In addition, the heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, breathing becomes faster,
irregular, and shallower, and there is temporary muscular paralysis and inability to regulate body
temperature; men experience erections and women experience clitoral tumescence. Dreaming
occurs during the REM phase. Among adults, phase 2 represents approximately 50% of time spent
sleeping, the REM phase 15 to 20%, and the remainder is comprised of phases 1, 3, and 4. During the
night, other phases shorten and the length of individual REM phases increase, lasting from 5 to 30
minutes. Infants spend half of their sleep time in the REM phase, and premature infants spend up to
80% in REM. Phases 3 and 4 and REM are homeostatically regulated, which means that deficiencies
are made up at the expense of phases 1 and 2. From this, experts conclude that deep sleep and REM
are of key importance for the entire sleep process and its function.
Three key factors in a bedroom guarantee peaceful sleep: quiet,
darkness, and a proper temperature.
A humming fan, the sound of a radio or television, or any insignificant small
noise can disturb sleep. You can help yourself by setting a radio between two FM
stations. This white noise will eliminate other noises.
Even just a few rays of light can interfere with sleep. Your room should be dark;
if this is not possible, a sleeping mask can help.
The best temperature for a bedroom is 16 to 18 °C. A room that is too warm or a
bed with too many covers may disturb sleep.
Tips for better sleep:
• Establish a sleeping schedule: always go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time.
• Learn what relaxes you before bed: a bath, reading, or
listening to music. This should become a habit.
• Your bedroom should be a haven of comfort: dark, quiet, comfortable, and cool.
• Regularly check whether your mattress and pillow are providing proper support
and comfort. Get a new mattress every 5 to 7 years and a new pillow every year.
• Televisions, computers, and work material do not belong in the bedroom.
Bedrooms are meant exclusively for sleep and intimacy.
• Finish recreational activities at least 2 hours before bed.
• If you sleep with a partner, your bed must have enough room.
• Avoid nicotine before bed because this disturbs sleep.
• Avoid alcohol and caffeine before bed because they keep you awake.
• Do not eat 2 to 3 hours before bed.

HELP CHOOSING
The good news is that a good mattress is the first step to good sleep. Regularly compare the
mattress you are using to new models in stores to see if it is time to replace it.
Just like your favorite chair or pair of shoes, your mattress is still comfortable long after it no
longer properly supports your body.
It may be time for a new mattress if:
• Your mattress is five to seven years old. A mattress has to be changed every five to seven years
because the human body and its needs change over time; the older we are, the more comfort
we need. It is recommended that you compare your mattress with new models on the market
every few years.
• You wake up stiff and with aches and pains.
• You enjoy better sleep somewhere other than your own bed (e.g., in a hotel).
• Your mattress shows signs of visible wear and tear (it is lumpy, the fabric is loose, the inside is
showing in places).
Do not be misled by your warranty period. The warranty period is not an indicator of how long
you should use your mattress. The warranty period is for consumer protection against product
defects, not for loss of comfort or support.
The right mattress for sleeping well is the one that satisfies your personal needs for comfort and
support. Whether you choose a spring, foam, or latex mattress, or a waterbed or airbed, always
judge the mattress comfort, support, durability, and size.
COMFORT: The best mattresses today are made with several stacked layers and offer the best
comfort. Luxury materials and specially processed especially soft fabrics make a mattress even
nicer to the touch.
SuPPORT: A good mattress provides gentle support to the body’s pressure points and holds the
spine in the position of a straight, sturdy soldier. Pay special attention to the heaviest parts of the
body, the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
DuRABILITY: How long a mattress offers suitable support and comfort depends on the quality of
the materials it is made from.
SIZE: A healthy person shifts position 40 to 60 times per night and therefore needs room to turn
over. Check whether a mattress offers enough space to freely turn over. When buying a mattress
with a partner, test it at the same time. Both of you should lie on your backs with your arms
behind your head and your elbows out. Your elbows should not touch. The mattress should also be
10 to 15 cm longer than you are tall.

The pocket spring core adjusts to the body at every pressure point.
All of the springs are separate; each one is inside a fabric pocket and
operates independently. Only the springs supporting the body are
compressed and the others are at rest. Pocket springs respond to
the slightest change in weight distribution across the mattress, the
shape of the body, and sleeping position.
The pocket spring core ensures optimal body support
and is especially comfortable at the same time. It
supports the body along its entire length and width
and allows proper positioning of the spine so the
muscles relax and sleep is peaceful with little motion.
A 200 x 90-cm mattress contains 336 springs in 28 rows of 12 springs each. The wire diameter of
the springs in the mattress versions is 1.8 mm (standard), 1.6 mm (soft), 2.0 mm (firm), and 2.1
mm (very firm). The standard version is recommended for people weighing 40 to 100 kg, soft for
those up to 60 kg, firm for those from 100 to 150 kg, and very firm for those from 150 to 250 kg.
All of these advantages of the pocket spring core are even
more apparent with zoned cores. Cores can have three,
five, or seven zones. The five-zone core has the following
arrangement of zones: firm, soft, firm, soft, firm. In the
standard version the firm zone is made with 2.0 mm
wire, and the soft zone with 1.8 mm wire.

The SoftTouchTM core provides a special
combination of responsiveness, comfort,
and support. Because of the special spring
geometry, the mattress is extremely
soft at first touch, but when weight is
distributed across the mattress it becomes
firmer and provides proper support. The
upper and lower part of the spring, where
the coils are denser, provides comfort,
and the central part provides support.
The compound spring system in hi·low™ pockets
makes it possible to combine high and low springs. The
checkerboard layout combines 15-cm and 13-cm springs.
This allows them to actively adjust to the body because
the springs respond to the slightest movement. The
height difference creates comfort and breathability,
and the central part provides proper support.
SPLIT MATTRESSES
Split mattresses are 160, 180, or 200-cm
wide with different firmness levels for
each side. They are made for couples
with different body weights that need

The classic Bonnell steel spring core is made with springs that are interconnected with
spiral wire. Mattresses with a Bonnell core adjust to the body as a flat surface and feel
firm. The spring coils are larger at the top and bottom than in the center.
The core measures 200 x 90 cm and is normally comprised of 22 rows of 8 springs each.
The wire diameter is 2.2 mm. The production technology for Bonnell cores is simpler and
less expensive than producing pocket cores, and so mattresses with Bonnell cores cost less.
With the addition of polyurethane foam, coir, and other materials to the wire cores,
these are very high quality and comfortable mattresses. The comfort of mattresses with
the classic steel spring core can be increased further by using a latex or memory foam
mattress pad.

Foam mattresses differ by the type of foam and number of zones.
The basic foam used in both foam mattresses and in mattresses
with the pocket spring core and with the classic steel spring core is
polyurethane foam of various firmness with regard to use. The foam
on the edges is normally firmer than that on the mattress surface.
HR foam is a newer material whose production method makes
it much more comfortable, elastic, breathable, and durable. Its
composition is very similar to a natural sponge. HR foam is very soft
and pleasant to the touch and it properly supports the body.
Memory foam shapes itself under the weight and heat of the body,
molding itself to the body and reducing the upward pressure of the
mattress as much as possible. It provides even support while lying on
it and always returns to its original form. The spine stays in the proper
position and is physiologically aligned, also when sleeping on your side.
