Dear Visitor,
Welcome to Hyde Park. Hyde Park has a long tradition of welcoming guest to our community. We have been at the forefront of academic, political and cultural history dating
back to the Columbian Exposition in 1893. Our list of distinguished Hyde Parkers include
five Nobel Prize laureates, first ladies Mary Todd Lincoln and Michelle Obama, lawyer
Clarence Darrow, boxer and activist Muhammad Ali, Cook County Board President Toni
Preckwinkle and current United States President Barack Obama. We are proud of our
diverse and eclectic mix of eateries, shops, cultural attractions and architecture that
include the DuSable Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, the Frank Lloyd Wright
Robie House and the University of Chicago campus. We hope you enjoy your time in our
neighborhood and you find out why Hyde Park, the Jewel on the Lake, is one of Chicago’s

Your Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce is committed to advocating for you, informing
you of pertinent issues that affect your business and facilitating relationships that can
lead to new business opportunities.
Thank you for being a part of our community. It has been a busy year for us. We conducted twenty-five networking events for members to meet each other and build relationships that lead to new business opportunities. We organized twelve workshops, where
industry professionals taught best practices and highlighted emerging trends. When
asked, we eagerly advocated for members with phone calls and letters of support to
interested parties. Our Chamber website, maps, directories and various marketing pieces
are seen by the thousands. As a result, membership continues to grow.
We love Hyde Park’s past and are excited for Hyde Park’s future. Harper Court’s new
shops, office tower, movie theater and a Hyatt hotel have ignited a wave of economic
development. Two large residential buildings, the Chicago Innovation Exchange, and
a boutique hotel have strengthened Hyde Park’s global presence. Our neighborhood
is changing and new competitors are on the way. But, Hyde Parkers prefer to do business with those they know and trust. The Chamber can facilitate these relationships. We

ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS
From preschool through high school, Hyde Park’s 17 public, parochial, and private
schools afford parents a wide variety of
educational choices. Among the many
options are Ray Elementary School, recently named an Illinois State Board of
Education “Model School”; Murray Language Academy, a top-ranked magnet
school; Akiba-Schechter, the only
Jewish Day School on Chicago’s South
Side; and Saint Thomas the Apostle,
Hyde Park’s only Catholic School. For
younger children, the Parent Cooperative for Early Learning offers a playbased preschool environment.
The University of Chicago plays a
key role in educating area children.
The University’s Laboratory Schools,
founded in 1896 by philosopher and education reformer John Dewey, educate nearly
1,700 students each year, while the University of Chicago Charter School’s four campuses

As a neighborhood with gems like the DuSable Museum of African American History,
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House, the Oriental Institute and the Museum of Science
and Industry, Hyde Park is
rapidly becoming known as
Chicago’s Culture Coast.
Hyde Park has a rich music
tradition, including a weekly
Sunday Jazz series. In 2007,
the Hyde Park Cultural Alliance, the Hyde Park Jazz
Society, and the University of
Chicago launched the Hyde
Park Jazz Festival. Annually,
the Hyde Park Chamber of
Commerce, in collaboration with the Chicago Park
District, South East Chicago
Commission, the University
of Chicago, SSA, Nichols Park
Advisory Council and BankFinancial,
collaborate to host Downtown Hyde
Park, consisting of Sunday Summer
Concerts, a Children’s Book Fair, an
Oktoberfest and a Winterfest.
The Hyde Park Art Center presents
regular exhibitions of Chicago-area
artists’ work and offers classes for
children and adults. Every June, 57th
Street and Kimbark Avenue becomes a bustling, open-air market for top-quality arts and
crafts as the 57th Street Art Fair (the oldest community art fair in Chicago) brings artists
from across the U.S. and Canada to the neighborhood.
Many Hyde Park booksellers — Powell’s Bookstore, the Seminary Co-op and 57th Street
Books — host frequent book signings and meet-the-author events. The Gilbert & Sullivan
Opera Company, founded by a group of Hyde Parkers in 1960, presents an annual comic
opera; the Hyde Park Community Players, founded in 2009, and Court Theatre’s professional ensemble present outstanding theater, while the Hyde Park School of Dance, iTwirl
Dance, Marsha’s Music Together and Hyde Park Suzuki Institute have established reputations as premiere players in the development of musicians and dancers of all ages.
Stroll down any of Hyde Park’s tree-lined streets — or take an Architecture Foundation
walking tour — and you are sure to find buildings like the neoclassical Museum of
Science and Industry, built for the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893; Frank Lloyd
Wright’s Prairie-style Robie House; Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s first high-rise; and the
Gothic quadrangles of the University of Chicago campus, that delight the eye and capture the imagination.

GETTING AROUND HYDE PARK
Hyde Park is located on the South Side of Chicago, 15 to 20 minutes from downtown. It is
easy to get to Hyde Park and back downtown anytime!
BY CAR
Lake Shore Drive, which extends along Lake Michigan from the city’s South Side to the
far North Side, is accessible with Hyde Park exits at 47th Street, 51st Street, 53rd Street
and 57th Street.
BY BUS
If you choose to take the bus, you have a plethora of options.
• On the east side of Hyde Park: the #6 Jackson Park Express running north/
south on Hyde Park Blvd. & Stony Island Avenue; the #28 running north/ south on Lake
Park Avenue & Stony Island Avenue.
• On north side of Hyde Park: #2 Hyde Park Express heading north (Operates
mornings only)

GETTING AROUND HYDE PARK
BY TRAIN
Metra trains run between downtown (Millennium Park Station) and the far south side.
There are Metra stops in Hyde Park at 47th Street, 51st Street, 53rd Street, 55th Street,
56th Street, 57th Street and 59th Street.
From downtown to Hyde Park is a 14 minute train ride. Metra is highly accessible and
runs on a published schedule.
BY BIKE
Biking around Hyde Park is easy, with lanes available along the lakefront and on 55th
Street. To get downtown, bicyclist can take the lakefront path, which spans the full
length of Lake Shore Drive. To rent a bike, visit one of Hyde Park’s many Divvy bike stations, where you can rent a bike to ride to another station near your destination. You will
find Divvy bikes at the following locations:

Hyde Park’s myriad opportunities for recreation begin at the lakefront. Promontory Point
juts out into the lake, providing spectacular views of downtown and a fine spot for a
picnic. The Point
connects with
the Park District’s Lakefront
Path, allowing
Hyde Parkers
to bike, walk
or jog for miles
along the shore
with no worries
about traffic.
At Jackson
Park, you can
watch sailboats
in the harbor,
play golf and
tennis, swim at
the sandy 57th
Street Beach,
watch birds on
Wooded Island
or imagine yourself miles away
from the city in
the Osaka Japanese Garden. Stretching from Jackson Park to Washington Park, Midway
Plaisance, a legacy of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, provides a welcome
swath of green all along the southern end of the neighborhood. Its gardens, summer
movies and concerts, and winter ice skating rink make it a favored recreational choice all
year round.
Walking and running routes pass by Robie House, Rockefeller Chapel, Oriental Institute,
University of Chicago Quadrangles and the Fountain of Time. Numerous other smaller
parks and playgrounds dot Hyde Park, giving young and old alike plenty of opportunity
for outdoor recreation.
Looking for indoor recreation? The Hyde Park Neighborhood Club is a good place to
start. It offers activities for all ages, including an after-school program and classes ranging from Brazilian martial arts to knitting. The Hyde Park Jewish Community Center runs
a popular summer day camp as well as classes and sports leagues for children and adults.
For bowling and billiards, head to Seven Ten Lanes on 55th Street.

47th Street on the north to 57th Street on the
south, from jewelry and clothing boutiques
to Treasure Island, American’s most European
Supermarket, Hyde Park stores and shops have
what you want.
There are several smaller food stores/markets:
for fresh produce, head to Open Produce on
55th Street, Hyde Park Produce on 53rd Street
and from June through October, visit the Thursday morning Farmers Market in Harper Court.
On 57th Street, there are Harper Foods and
Zaleski & Horvath.
Not to be overlooked among Hyde Park’s
unique shopping destinations are the stores
connected with museums and other cultural attractions. Worth a visit, for example, are the gift
shops at the Museum of Science and Industry,
the DuSable Museum of African American History, the Oriental Institute and Robie House.

WORSHIP
Hyde Park’s diversity is reflected in its many opportunities for worship and fellowship. All
major religious faiths are represented, as are many that are less well known. Residents
and visitors can visit churches, synagogues, or a mosque. Rockefeller Memorial Chapel
sponsors an annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service that draws together the University
of Chicago and the community. The Hyde Park-Kenwood Interfaith Council serves as an
umbrella group for religious organizations in the neighborhood and is among the oldest
such groups in the nation.
