START/END Lake Willoughby North Beach, North Beach Rd, WESTMORE VT 1. Ride south along Lake Willoughby on Rt 5A. 2. Continue south on 5A almost a mile beyond the lake to a parking lot and CCC Rd on the right. Across the street is the Mt Pisgah trailhead. 3. Turn right on the dirt CCC Rd and climb steeply up to the south and then around to the west. A series of cross country ski trails branch off in three loops; stay on the dirt CCC Rd and climb to a small clearing that offers a beautiful view north to Lake Willoughby and the twin cliffs of Mt Pisgah to the right and Mt Hor to the left. 4. Continue west on the CCC Rd, passing the trailhead for the Mt Hor hiking trail. Continue until you come to a right hand turn on a dirt twotrack. This is the trail you will follow north past Duck Pond and Blake Pond with the bulk of Mt Hor to your east and miles of Willoughby State forest to your left. The route can be rough and wet but is passable and eventually climbs up into Pleasant Valley and passes the Moose Mountain trailhead and another trail leading to the overlook on Mt Hor. 5. Continue north and descend to a valley with views of the Wheeler Mountain cliffs to the north. 6. Bear right on Wheeler Mtn Rd and then right onto Lakeview Rd. 7. Continue north through small farms with occasional views of Lake Willoughby. The road turns to pavement and eventually meets State Highway 16 just before it arrives back at the North Beach and your starting point. 2 Long Pond Loop Distance 14.22 miles Climb 1528 feet Start Elevation: 1222 ft Max Elevation: 2233 ft Figures by www.mapmyride.com 3 Tour de Glover Loop Distance 15.66 miles Climb 1879 feet Start Elevation: 969 ft Max Elevation: 2094 ft Figures by www.mapmyride.com This backroad ride follows the route of the annual Tour de Glover mountain bike race, held on the last Saturday of July every year. Glover is a quiet town of dairy farms and sugarbushes, home of the world renowned Bread and Puppet Theater, Currier’s Market, and Parker Pie Company. Park along the Town Green next to the Union House Nursing Home on Rte 16 in Glover. START/END This route begins at the Willoughby Lake Store in Westmore, where Long Pond Road meets State highway 5A halfway down the lake and midway between the North Beach and South Beach. Ask permission of the store owners to park on the roadside behind the store. START/END Lake Willoughby General Store, 2003 Rte. 5A, WESTMORE VT 1. Climb steeply up the Long Pond Rd for 2 miles to the tiny beach and fishing access for Long Pond. 2. Continue on the dirt road as it winds around Long Pond, passing trailheads for hikes up Bald Mountain and Haystack Mountain. 3. The road climbs steeply before leveling off and descending to the Newark Pond Rd. 4. Bear left to come out at Newark Pond. Option of continuing north to Bald Hill Pond and several smaller high mountain ponds & a State Fish Hatchery. 5. To complete the loop turn around and ride south on Newark Pond Rd, a long downhill glide until it meets Rte 5A again at the bottom. 6. Turn right on Rte 5A and ride several miles north to Lake Willoughby again. Pass beneath the cliffs of Mt Pisgah. Glover Town Green, Rte. 16, GLOVER VT 1. Bike up the steep Still Hill Rd. After 1.5 miles road turns into a Class 4 doubletrack. Continue to climb until it meets the Borland Rd. 2. Bear slightly left as the Borland Rd bends sharply and follows a field to the top of a hill with nice views in all directions. 3. Borland Rd or Sevarial Hill Rd descends through woods as a rough doubletrack until it reaches Parker Rd and Lake Parker. 4. Turn left on Parker Rd and follow it south along the lake then west up into the hills. Bear right at the fork with Young Rd. 5. Bear left on Beach Hill Rd., climb .8 miles and bear right at the intersection of Bear Call and Beach Hill Rd. Climb steeply for .75 mile. A long downhill glide leads to a tee with Andersonville Rd. 6. Bear right on County Rd and head north through beautiful farmland and woods. Continue straight through the intersection with the South Albany Rd. 7. Take a right turn onto King Rd, following it downhill to an intersection, and turn left onto West Shore Rd. 8. Follow the lake shore until it meets the now paved County Rd again. 9. Bear right on County Rd and you will soon come to tiny West Glover village. 10. Continue straight through the 4 corners to climb Bean Hill Rd back to Rte 16 and Glover Village. Turn right at the bottom of the hill... 4 Lake Parker Loop 5 Hartwell Pond Loop Distance 15.0 miles Climb 1387 feet Distance 14.32 miles Climb 1299 feet Figures by www.mapmyride.com Figures by www.mapmyride.com Start Elevation: 1322 ft Max Elevation: 2094 ft Start Elevation: 1329 ft Max Elevation: 1856 ft The beautiful 15 mile Lake Parker Loop is actually a figure 8, running up to high scenic views of the Green Mountains and down through valley meadows. Begin and end at the parking lot beside the West Glover Church in West Glover Village. START/END West Glover Church, Bean Hill Rd, WEST GLOVER VT 1. Head south on Parker Rd which leads you on a level, winding ride along the east shore of Lake Parker. Follow the road south past the end of the lake then west up into the hills. Bear right at the fork with Young Rd. 2. Bear left on Beach Hill Rd., climb .8 miles and bear left onto Bear Call Rd. Climb & descend steeply to a tee with the Daniels Pond Rd. 3. Bear right, passing a beaver pond on your left. Follow the road to the intersection at Andersonville Farm. 4. Bear left on Andersonville Rd/County Rd. After .5 miles make a left onto tiny Rodgers Rd (across from the cemetery). 5. Rodgers Rd grows smaller until it is little more than a doubletrack. Bear left at the fork and cross the fields of the Rodgers Farm Bed & Breakfast. 6. Rodgers Rd meets the Daniels Pond Rd. 7. Bear left on Daniels Pond Rd, following your tracks from before for just a half mile until you meet Andersonville Rd/Country Rd again. 8. Bear right and head north 2 miles. Continue straight through the intersection with the South Albany Rd. 10. Take a right turn onto King Rd, following it downhill to an intersection, and turn left onto West Shore Rd. 11. Follow the lake shore until it meets the paved County Rd again. 12. Bear right and you will soon come to tiny West Glover village. Continue to the four corners and West Glover Church. This scenic 14.3 mile loop leads you past a hidden lake and through some of the most beautiful scenery the Kingdom has to offer. Begin and end at the West Glover Church parking lot in West Glover Village. START/END West Glover Church, Bean Hill Rd, WEST GLOVER VT 1. Head west on County Rd. 2. At an intersection just over the top make a right on the South Albany Rd. This drops sharply and winds around to follow the north shore of secluded Hartwell Pond. 3. Follow the road into tiny South Albany. 4. Just before you approach the village, bear sharply right on Whitcomb Rd. 5. A long steep climb and a long glide down the Whitcomb Rd north, also known as Lafont Rd, will bring you to the East Albany Rd where you will bear right, climbing past a large maple sugarbush that opens to a view of Bald Mountain. 6. Descend to the 4-corners and turn right on the Stevens Rd. At the Lake Parker Country Store turn left on the pavement to return to the West Glover Church. 6 Sheffield Square Loop 7 Wheeler Pond Loop Distance 23.2 miles Climb 1722 feet Distance 19.02 miles Climb 1880 feet Figures by www.mapmyride.com Figures by www.mapmyride.com Start Elevation: 964 ft Max Elevation: 1971 ft Start Elevation: 1168 ft Max Elevation: 1920 ft The Sheffield Square Loop offers a mix of dirt and paved roads and covers 23.2 miles. It climbs to a high summit on the Duck Pond Road just at the foot of the Sheffield Wind Energy Project. Park along the Town Green next to the Union House Nursing Home on Rte 16. The Wheeler Pond Loop passes two of the most beautiful features of the Northeast Kingdom; Lake Willoughby and Wheeler Mountain. Begin and end at the North START/END Glover Town Green, Glover St., GLOVER VT 1. Bike south on Rte 16 for about 5 miles. 2. Make a left turn onto Square Rd. Climb up to a level plateau that crosses the open fields of a former potato farm. 3. Drop down into the Miller’s Run Valley make a left onto Route 122 for a mile and a half. 4. Make a right turn onto the dirt Old Duck Pond Rd. Climb steeply for a mile until you see New Duck Pond Rd, a sharp right that takes you through twin tunnels under Interstate 91. 5. Follow New Duck Pond Rd north, always climbing until you are beneath the towering windmills of the Sheffield Wind Energy project. 6. * As a side trip you can bike through the steep, winding access roads of the wind project. Ask permission at the substation and maintenance shed just up the hill on the right after you climb through their gate. 7. Continuing north on New Duck Pond Rd with long downhill drops, several nice views to the north and east and a steep drop down to Barton Village. 8. Follow Rt 5 north through Barton & swing sharply to the south on Rte 16 towards Glover. 9. Continue south on Rte 16 to Glover Village Green. Beach parking lot on Lake Willoughby in Westmore. START/END Lake Willoughby North Beach, North Beach Rd, WESTMORE VT 1. Turn left out of the lot to the junction with Rte 5A. 2. Turn right to ride south along the east shore of Lake Willoughby, passing beneath the cliffs of Mt Pisgah and past the South Beach. 3. Continue south on Rte 5A almost 1 mile beyond the lake to the CCC Rd & Mt. Hor parking lot on the right. 4. Turn right on the dirt CCC Rd and climb steeply up to the south and then around to the west, past the trailhead for the Mt Hor hiking trail. 5. Continue on the CCC Rd until a right turn on a dirt two-track. Keep left here and at all other intersections to stay on the main roadway. 6. Stay on the CCC Rd past Marl Pond, down a logging road to the left. 7. Meet the paved VT Rte 5 and turn right. 8. Look for a right turn onto the dirt Wheeler Mt Rd. Take this road as it climbs steeply to the east, passing Wheeler Pond and several houses. 10. Wheeler Mt Rd becomes a rough doubletrack continuing east past the Wheeler cliffs. A long rough downhill brings you to Lakeview Rd. 11. Turn right on Lakeview Rd to Lake Willoughby. Stay straight as the road turns to tar and makes a right onto Rte 16 before the North Beach. There is ample parking at the library or C&C supermarket lots. START/END The Mud Island Loop is 21.7 miles through the maze of dirt roads between West Glover, East Craftsbury and South Albany. It offers a glimpse of small dairy farms, a sheep farm, a heritage orchard, tiny villages and historic one room schoolhouses. Start at the West Glover Church parking lot in West Glover Village. START/END West Glover Church, Bean Hill Rd, WEST GLOVER VT 1. Turn left at the 4 corners to ride south on Parker Rd. Pass the south end of the lake and ride a half mile to a fork, making a left on Young Rd. 2. Continue on the old town road, a rough doubletrack that climbs through fields and sugarbush and descends steeply to Perron Hill Rd. 3. Bear right on Perron Hill Rd which after half a mile narrows to a little used forest road down through a modern sugarbush and to a stream crossing where vehicles must ford the brook. There is a narrow snowmobile bridge just right for walking a bike across. The road climbs back up beyond the swamp until it meets Shadow Lake Rd. 4. Turn right on Shadow Lake Rd and follow it to a fork. 5. Bear left onto Mud Island Rd. 6. Mud Island Rd meets the paved East Craftsbury Rd. 7. Turn right on East Craftsbury Rd and pass through the tiny village. Just past the church turn right onto the dirt South Albany Rd. 8. Ride three miles until a right turn on Andersonville Rd. This climbs a long hill to an intersection with another South Albany Rd to the left. 9. Stay straight and the road is now called County Rd and will lead you back to West Glover. C&C Supermarket, Church St., BARTON VT 1. Ride north to the village green, a triangle where Rt 16 meets Rt 5. 2. Turn right on Rt 16 East and follow it south a quarter mile until it turns left and crosses the railroad tracks. 3. Just past the tracks, turn left again on High St. Ride along this street until it leaves town, becoming Telfer Hill Rd which climbs steeply until it levels off at the Barton Golf Club. 4. Beyond the Golf Club turn right on Chamberlin Rd. Turn left on Ryan Rd to a tee with the paved Rte 58. 5. Turn right on Rte 58 and ride 100 yds past the Evansville Trading Post. 6. Turn left on Hunt Hill Rd, dropping down and crossing the Willoughby River and climbing to an intersection with Schoolhouse Rd. 7. Turn left and follow Schoolhouse Rd to an intersection with the paved Center Rd in Brownington Center. 8. Turn left on the tar and quickly right onto Old Stone House Rd. Climb to the Old Stone House Museum. 9. Continue on to an intersection with the paved Hinman Settler Rd.*Ride across the road onto a driveway with a sign for Prospect Hill. Bike to the top for views of Lake Memphramagog and Canada. 10. Continute on the paved Hinman Settler Rd. through the village of Brownington, a collection of residential houses. 11. At a fork, bear left and drop onto Churchill Rd back down to the Willoughby River and Rt 58 again. 12. Cross Rte 58 and ride south several miles on the Hollow Rd to an intersection with Rte 5. 13. Bear left on Rte 5 to return to Barton. 10 Runaway Pond Loop 11 Craftsbury Loop Distance 17.36 miles Climb 1552 feet Distance 22.57 miles Climb 1812 feet Start Elevation: 1399 ft Max Elevation: 1868 ft Start Elevation: 900 ft Max Elevation: 1501 ft Figures by www.mapmyride.com Figures by www.mapmyride.com Runaway Pond Loop is a unique backroad ride that includes a stop at a famous microbrewery and a chance to swim from a tiny beach on one of the prettiest lakes in the Kingdom. Begin from the Runaway Pond parking lot, 6 miles south of Glover village on Rt 16. The 22.5 mile Craftsbury Loop includes a mix of pavement and gravel roads, leading through small farms and forested hills with great views and past the Craftsbury START/END Runaway Pond parking lot, Route 16, GLOVER VT 1. Ride 100 yards south on Rte 16 to a right turn on a tiny two track that will become Highlander St. 2. Continue straight as you pass two sideroads and Highlander will become Hillcrest Rd. 3. Turn right at an intersection with Hill Rd., passing Hill Farmstead Brewery on your right. 4. Continue north on Hill Rd and make a right on Town Hwy 8. *As a side trip, looking for a tiny two track after a mile to your right leading you to secluded and undeveloped Long Pond. 5. Continue north on Town Hwy 8 until it becomes Rocking Rock Rd after Gebbie Rd joins it. 6. Follow to a tee with Shadow Lake Rd. 7. Turn right and pedal north until Mud Island Rd merges from the left. 8. Continue north on Mud Island Rd until it meets Daniels Pond Rd and becomes Shadow Lake Rd. 9. Follow Shadow Lake Rd east. The road becomes pavement along Shadow Lake and past Shadow Lake Beach. Continue east to a tee with Rte 16. 10. Turn right on Rte 16 and ride two miles to the starting point at Runaway Pond. Outdoor Center, a internationally-renowned venue for cross-country skiing and sculling. The ride begin on beautiful Craftsbury Common. START/END Craftsbury Common, S. Craftsbury Rd, CRAFTSBURY VT 1. Ride north on the pavement until the gravel Strong Rd on your right. 2. Take Strong Rd. to its intersection with King Farm Rd where you will turn left and follow it until it meets Mill Village Rd in Mill Village. 3. Follow Mill Village Rd north until it forks right onto Lost Nation Rd. 4. Follow Lost Nation Rd to the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. 5. Continue north on Lost Nation Rd until it Ts with Page Pond Rd. 6. Turn left and ride a mile and a half to Page Pond and a four corners. 7. Turn right on Center Rd and ridenorth, through tiny Albany Center 8. Continue north on Delano Rd until you turn right at a fork onto Chamberlain Hill Rd up a long hill and back down to an intersection with the Creek Rd. 9. Turn right on the paved Creek Rd and follow it due south for 10 miles through picturesque East Albany village. Continue south as Creek Rd turns back to dirt at Craftsbury Lower Village, meeting the paved North Craftsbury Rd 10. Turn left on to visit the Craftsbury General Store or Pete’s Greens Farm Stand, or turn right to climb back to Craftsbury Common... 12 Burton Hill Loop 13 Covered Bridge Loop Distance 14.79 miles Climb 1412 ft Distance 18.65 miles Climb 1420 ft Figures by www.mapmyride.com Figures by www.mapmyride.com Start Elevation: 864 ft Max Elevation: 1483 ft Start Elevation: 945 ft Max Elevation: 1051 ft The 15 mile Burton Hill Loop begins just off I-91 Exit 25 in Barton, heads up hills for sweeping views of the Green Mountains, and returns through tiny West Glover village and a winding paved road back into Barton. Begin at the River’s Edge Farmstand, just off Exit 25. Park on the wide shoulder of the highway. A pleasant and fairly level route that begins on the picturesqe Irasburg town square where there is parking and a general store. Park across the street from Ray’s Market on Irasburg Common START/END River’s Edge Farm, 776 Glover Rd, BARTON VT 1. Ride north on State Rt. 16, into the village of Barton. 2. At Parson’s Corner Restaurant and the intersection with Elm St, turn left and ride west toward Burton Hill. 3. Elm St becomes Burton Hill Rd, crosses underneath the interstate and climbs steeply, soon becoming a gravel road. 4. The road levels off, drops to a valley and climbs again to the top of Burton Hill then a mile-long glide downhill past a small castle on the left. 5. After the small castle make a sharp left turn onto West Glover Rd. 6. Head south on West Glover Rd, passing an alpaca farm and through woods emerging in open fields at a four-corners. 7. Continue straight through the intersection onto Stevens Road into West Glover village. *Parker Pie, in the back of the Lake Parker Country Store, has restrooms, food, water and information. 8. Bear left on Bean Hill Rd for just a hundred yards and bear left again onto Roaring Brook Rd, past the Orleans County Fairgrounds to Rte 16/ Glover Rd. 9. Turn right on Rte. 16/Glover Rd to return to your car. Turn left to head into Barton and find restaurants, groceries and other amenities. START/END Ray’s Market, 96 Park Ave, IRASBURG VT 1. Take Rt 58 East for .4 miles. 2. Take a left onto Covered Bridge rd. 3. Go 1.5 miles, bear right at a fork onto Town Road 20/Campbell Rd. 4. Go another 1.5 miles to intersection with US RT 5. 5. Go straight across the highway onto Cooks Rd. Stay left at a fork, continuing on Cooks Rd. 6. At intersection with Webster Rd bear sharp right and go down the hill to Fred Webster’s Farm Museum. 7. Continue to the intersection with River Rd where you bear left and follow the Barton River north to Coventry Station Rd. 8. Bear left and cross the Barton River, climb the hill to a broad view of fields and forest and continue to Coventry Village. 9. Cross RT 14 and take Main St until you bear right on Covered Bridge Rd which will become the Back Coventry Rd. 10. Follow this road as it winds through woods and farmland and eventually rejoins Rt 5 at it’s intersection with Rt 58. 11. Take 58 & 14 south into Irasburg village to complete the loop. 14 Coventry Hills Loop 15 Circus Loop Distance 11.82 miles Climb 1355 feet Distance 15.84 miles Climb 1314 feet Start Elevation: 685 ft Max Elevation: 1587 ft Start Elevation: 1409 ft Max Elevation: 1868 ft Figures by www.mapmyride.com Figures by www.mapmyride.com This 11.8 mile loop is not long but takes you off into the woods on old, wet, rough twotrack and includes some steep climbing; allow 3 or 4 hours to cover the loop. Begin at the Park and Ride lot across the street from Martha’s Diner on Rt 5 in Coventry. START/END Martha’s Diner 585 Route 5, COVENTRY VT 1. Turn left onto Main St and follow it into the center of town. 2. At a monument bear right and right again on Heermanville Rd. 3. Climb steeply out of the village. Crest the hill and drop steeply down to a bridge over the Black River. 4. Continue on to a right turn onto Linton Hill Road. Climb steeply again and soon bear left onto Reservoir Road, a small twotrack, where Linton Hill Rd turns sharply right. 5. Follow Reservoir road until it enters deep woods as a snowmobile trail just beyond a camp driveway on your left. This is rough twotrack and wet at times as it climbs steeply to a summit in a clearing where the snowmobile trail branches to the right. 6. Stay straight and follow the wet track through the woods to the northwest. At a tee, stay right even though the left looks wider. Continue northwest until the track becomes a town road again and comes to a tee with Poginy Hill Rd. 7. Turn left and follow Poginy Hill Rd for a mile until it dwindles to a twotrack again at a small farm. Continue up through pastureland and into the woods. The twotrack continues south through wet, level forest and eventually emerges on the other side as Clark Mountain Rd. 8. Drop down into a hollow on Clark Mountain Rd and climb up the other side to a tee where Clark Mountain goes right. Take the left fork into a sugarbush onto the much smaller and sometimes rough Collins Rd which becomes Poutre Rd. 9. Turn left on Currier Hill Rd, drop steeply down to another left onto Back Coventry Rd. Continue northwest for several miles through a recently built covered bridge and back into Coventry village. This 15.8 mile loop begins in Greensboro village and takes you around Caspian Lake, north on a small road through the home of Circus Smirkus and into East Craftsbury village before looping around through the hill country and back to Greensboro. Begin in the center of Greensboro village. There is parking at the town beach on Beach Road, almost across the street from Willey’s store. START/END Willey’s Store 7 Breezy Avenue, GREENSBORO VT 1. Head south on the paved Breezy Ave. until at a ballfield take a right turn onto Lakeshore Rd. 2. Follow this along the west shore of Caspian Lake until you reach a four corners at Campbell’s Corner. 3. Pass straight through the intersection, going north on Richardson Rd. which is a narrow and little travelled gravel road. Soon you will come to an intersection with Circus Rd, summer base of Circus Smirkus. 4. Continue north, straight across Circus road onto tiny Whetstone Brook Rd, little more than a twotrack. This will bring you out to the pavement in the middle of the small viilage of East Craftsbury. 5. Turn right on the pavement and go southeast on the Craftsbury Rd until you see Shadow Lake Rd on your left. 6. Turn east and follow Shadow Lake Rd up a hill past Cate Hill Orchard. 7. Follow Shadow Lake Rd north another mile to a right turn on Rocking Rock Rd. This will lead you east again, uphill and then south through open fields, 8. At a fork stay left on Town Hwy 8 and follow this south for several miles, staying right until you merge with Baker Hill Rd and descend into Greensboro village.
