Wiring for Damper Actuators and Control Valves
Wiring for Damper Actuators and Control Valves July 2011 Wiring for Damper Actuators and Control Valves General Wiring Instructions Always read the controller manufacturer’s installation literature carefully before making any connections. Follow all CAUTION: It is good practice to power electronic or digital controllers from a separate power transformer than that used for actuators or other end devices. The power supply design in our actuators and other end devices use half wave rectification. Some controllers use full wave rectification. When these two different types of power supplies are connected to the same power transformer and the DC commons are connected together, a short circuit is created across one of the diodes in the full wave power supply, damaging the controller. Only use a single power transformer to power the controller and actuator if you know the controller power supply uses half wave rectification. instructions in this literature. If you have any questions, contact the controller manufacturer and/or Belimo. Multiple actuators, one transformer Transformer(s) Belimo actuators require a 24 VAC Class 2 transformer. The actuator enclosure cannot be opened in the field, there are no parts or components to be replaced or repaired. – EMC Directive: 2004/108/EC – Software Class A: Mode of Operation Type 1 – Low Voltage Directive: 2006/95/EC Example: 3 AF Actuators Supplied, 16 Ga. wire (refer to table on page 3) 350 ft. The TOTAL current draw of the actuators (VA rating) is less than or equal to the rating of the transformer. 2. Polarity on the secondary of the transformer is strictly followed. This means that all No. 1 wires from all actuators are connected to the common leg on the transformer and all No. 2 wires from all actuators are connected to the hotleg. Mixing wire No. 1 & 2 on one leg of the transformer will result in erratic operation or failure of the actuator and/or controls. Multiple actuators, multiple transformers Multiple actuators positioned by the same control signal may be powered from multiple transformers provided the following rules are followed: 1. The transformers are properly sized. 2. All No. 1 wires from all actuators are tied together and tied to the negative leg of the control signal. See wiring diagram. Wire type and wire installation tips For most installations, 18 or 16 Ga. cable works well with Belimo actuators. Review job requirements and determine whether a plenum or appliance rated cable is appropriate. Use code-approved wire nuts, terminal strips or solderless connectors where wires are joined. It is good practice to run control wires unspliced from the actuator to the controller. If splices are unavoidable, make sure the splice can be reached for possible maintenance. Tape and/or wire-tie the splice to reduce the possibility of the splice being inadvertently pulled apart. Wire length for actuator installation Keep power wire runs below the lengths listed in the following tables. If more than one actuator is powered from the same wire run, divide the allowable wire length by the number of actuators to determine the maximum run to any single actuator. 866-805-7089 CANADA 203-791-8396 LATIN AMERICA / CARIBBEAN N40067 - 7/11 - Subject to change. © Belimo Aircontrols (USA), Inc. WARNING: The wiring technician must be trained and experienced with electronic circuits. Disconnect power supply before attempting any wiring connections or changes. Make all connections in accordance with wiring diagrams and follow all applicable local and national codes. Provide disconnect and overload protection as required. Use copper, twisted pair, conductors only. If using electrical conduit, the attachment to the actuator must be made with flexible conduit. 24 VAC 110 VAC 800-543-9038 USA 866-805-7089 CANADA 6 7 7 6 7 GM… 1125 800 475 300 895 545 900 550 800 1125 900 1150 1125 800 500 310 575 200 500 12 350 14 345 125 375 16 325 325 220 80 200 6 7.5 AM… 1150 925 600 375 200 6.5 NM… 1150 925 600 375 200 7.5 AM… 1125 700 450 300 150 6.5 NM… 1125 800 500 325 175 1125 700 450 300 150 1125 800 500 325 175 MAX Distance between Actuator and Supply (feet) 9.5 1150 LF…US TF…US 1125 900 18 215 11 NF..UP 1150 800 175 120 18 AF…US 895 900 20 29 AF..UP EF wire gauge 1050 440 545 500 12 650 575 375 275 500 325 14 575 375 325 345 165 415 110 VA 7.5 6 MAX Distance between Actuator and Supply (feet) 6.5 16 215 11 GM… 1125 18 265 8.5 LF…US TF…US 420 175 21 NF..UP 440 800 20 wire gauge AF 1175 260 500 AF..UP 1125 275 160 105 EF 1000 1100 165 900 800 700 550 600 500 12 550 390 360 350 14 VA 7 NM… 5 LM/LR… 1.5 CM… 1125 700 450 250 4.5 LM… 1125 700 450 250 4.5 LM… 700 450 250 1500 1000 600 325 3.5 CM… 1150 1000 600 350 3.5 CM… 1200 1150 800 MAX Distance between Actuator and Supply (feet) 22 NKQ… GM/GR… AM/AR… 325 110 21 GK/ GKR… 225 450 5 TF…US 145 325 7 LF…US 16 250 9 NF 18 220 10 AF 175 16 EF 20 wire gauge VA 1175 1125 750 400 3 LU 1175 1125 750 400 3 LU 600 375 200 6 AH… 700 450 250 5 LH… 700 450 250 5 LU… 1400 1200 1100 1 TR… 500 300 200 125 70 18 AMQ… NMQ… LMQ… AHQ… LHQ… *Belimo actuators and auxiliary switches are designed as a IEC protection class II, double insulated, and do not require an independent ground wire to earth, unless otherwise indicated in this document 220 VAC N40067 - 7/11 - Subject to change. © Belimo Aircontrols (USA), Inc.
