Temple Hillel Herald AWARD WINNING BULLETIN Winners of United Synagogue Awards Competition If I am not for myself, who is for me? If I care only for myself, what am I? If not now, when? - Hillel Cheshvan/Kislev 5772 November 2011 Please join us on Wednesday, November 9th at 7:00pm at Valley Stream Jewish Center 322 N. Corona Ave. 11580 Inside this issue: B’nai Mitzvah 6 As we remember the events of Calendar 14 Kristallnacht President’s Message 3 Sisterhood Annual Dinner and Fashion Show Wednesday, November 2th at 6:30pm Rabbi’s Message 2 Religious School 7 Sabbath, Holiday, Bar/ Bat Mitzvah 11 Sunshine 12 Please join us on Yahrzeits 20 Saturday, November 19, 2011 Youth Group Fashions by ‘Joy’s Boutique’ As we present Senator Dean Skelos 9 RABBI’S ARTICLE From the Rabbi's Study Dear Friends, Do you know how many arms there are in Conservative Judaism? The list includes Jewish Theological Seminary of America, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Rabbinical Assembly, Women's League for Conservative Judaism, Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs, Cantors Assembly, Masorti Foundation for Conservative Judaism in Israel, Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, National Ramah Commission, Jewish Educators Assembly, North American Association of Synagogue Executives, Solomon Schechter Day School Association and MERCAZ USA. Do you know about MERCAZ USA? I am a member and you should be too. MERCAZ USA is the Zionist Organization of the Conservative Movement, representing Conservative Judaism within the World Zionist Organization, the Jewish Agency for Israel, the American Zionist Movement and the Jewish National Fund. Their mission is to support religious pluralism in Israel and strengthen the connection between Israel and the Diaspora. How do they support religious pluralism? When the WZO and the other aforementioned organizations designate funds for organizations and projects in Israel, MERCAZ advocates for projects that help our movement in Israel to grow. WZO and the other organizations determine their budget on the basis of how many members belong to each of their member organizations. That is why I urge you to become a member. A family membership of $54, an individual membership of $36 or a student membership of $12 guarantees funding worth so much more to projects that foster much needed religious pluralism in Israel. How does MERCAZ USA strengthen the connection between Israel and the Diaspora? MERCAZ links Jewish communities in the United States with Israel through tourism, Jewish education, the study of the Hebrew language, "people-to-people" partnerships, short-and long-term Israel programs and Aliyah. MERCAZ USA works in cooperation with all the other arms of Conservative Movement and is affiliated with MERCAZ OLAMI and the other MERCAZ chapters in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine and Uruguay. I rarely promote organizations, but this is part of our very own movement and is deserving of your support. Please go online to www.mercazusa.org or call them at (212) 533-2061 to become a member. Kol Tuv – my best to you, Page 2 Rabbi Steven M. Graber PRESIDENT’S ARTICLE The High Holidays are officially over and Temple Hillel is getting back into its regular rhythm. We had a beautiful month of holidays, capped off by our Simchat Torah celebration, when we honored our three Chattans (Leroy “Buddy” Lowenfeld, Mervin Jacobs, Gary Laveman,) and two Malkas, (Gitty Greene, and Rita Moelis,) and we all enjoyed our annual Sim-Chai Luncheon for the congregation. Ensuring that the holidays were a joyous time for all of us is not an easy task. I would like to thank everyone from the seating, honors, Kol Nidre, and security and ushers committees for all of their effort and hard work. You all know who you are, and I will not mention any names, as I don’t want to insult anyone by omitting any of you. Thank you to our clergy, Rabbi Steven Graber, Cantor David Guber, Cantor Shlomo Guber, and Reb Steven Blitz for their hard work during the holidays. I certainly don’t want to leave out our maintenance staff, Lloyd, Donald, and Steven for the hours of work that they put in to make our building shine during the holidays. I would be remiss if I did not give a huge thanks to our Executive Director, Irene Nelson, and her office staff, Rita Markowitz, Casandra Hunte, and Aleece Schneider for organizing, mailing, and handling all of the tasks that came into the office for the holidays and making certain that we were all taken care of. The congregation thanks all of you for your dedication to Temple Hillel. In my Kol Nidre speech, I said that there was no subtle way to ask for money and many of you responded to my request, and I thank each one of you for doing so. I want to emphasize a different way that our congregants can support Temple Hillel and themselves at the same time. We sell SCRIP in the main office. If you still don’t know what scrip is, it is a dollar for dollar way to shop at some of your favorite stores, including Bed Bath and Beyond, CVS, Lord & Taylors, Jerry’s Bagels, and Woodro’s. The form for purchasing Scrip is in the bulletin each month. ALL OF US BUY FOOD at the supermarkets. Whether you shop at Foodtown, Stop & Shop, King Kullen, Waldbaums, Pathmark, Brachs, or Gourmet Glatt, you can purchase, as I already said, dollar for dollar certificates or gift card that you use at the checkout instead of cash. It is a “no brainer”! Temple Hillel gets back 5% and you get 100% of you dollar value for your purchase. So please continue to support Temple Hillel throughout the year by making your purchases using Scrip, and stopping at the Temple Hillel office before you shop. In November, we have many exciting activities planned. On Saturday, November 19 th, New York State Senator Dean Skelos will be addressing our congregation. I hope that I will see many of you there. Check the bulletin and your Shabbat Shalom e-mails for all of our exciting programs. We end the month with all of our families gathering around the table for Thanksgiving. From my family, David, Nicole, Scott and I, to yours, we wish everyone a fantastic Thanksgiving Day. B’Shalom, Robin Page 3 WHERE DO YOUR MINYAN DONATIONS GO??????? Did you know that the donations the Minyan Group receives are used to purchases and/or refurbish many of the beautiful Religious Articles in our building? Another such donation was just made this week. We would like to extend our thanks to the Minyan Group for their very generous donation, which was used to re-finish the beautiful brass Menorah which you see each and every time you enter our main entrance. Thank you to the Minyan Group for their continuing generosity. Page 4 Page 5 MAZEL TOV TO OUR B’NAI MITZVAH NOAH HOHNER Noah enjoys playing guitar, working out with his trainer and playing video games. He loves spending time with his cat, Jelly and dog, Cass. Noah is a 8th grade student at Lincoln Orens Middle School and will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah on November 12, 2001 Noah’s parents are Allison & Chris Hohner. Noah’s grandparents are Joan & Joel Dollinger. ALANNA FAY LANDIS Alanna loves summer, going to the beach, playing sports and hanging out with friends. Alanna is a 7th grade student at Woodmere Middle School and will be celebrating her Bat Mitzvah on November 4, 2011. Alanna’s parents are Laurie & Larry Landis. She has one brother, Steven. מזל טוב On behalf of the faculty, I would like to wish a Mazal Tov to MASON FLIEGEL, RACHEL DISIBIO on becoming B’nai Mitzvah in October. We wish a Mazal Tov to ALANNA LANDIS and NOAH HOHNER who will become B’nai Mitzvah in November. I hope that we will see you after your B’nai Mitzvah as you continue your Jewish education in our Hebrew High School. Page 6 RELIGIOUS SCHOOL SCOOP Dear Students and Parents: Now that the holidays of Tishrei are over, we are hitting our stride and getting into our routine. We are pleased that Cantor David will be back to work regularly with our students. He is enjoying getting to know them; the students are enjoying getting to know him. We had wonderful attendance at our Junior Congregation, led by Daniel Graber during the holidays, and at the Family Friday Night Service this past month. For our first Family education class on Sunday November 20, 2011, our Parents Association will host “Dining with the Director” (A brunch w/Evie :). This workshop, while specifically for 3rd – 5th graders, is open to all parents and the topic will be announced. Please join us! RSVP to the school office by phone (791-9121) or by email (evelyn.berkowitz@gmail.com). We hope you’ll be able to join us. B’Shalom, Evelyn Berkowitz Friday night, October 14th we celebrated the birthdays of the following children who were born in the months of July - October. JACOB TANENBAUM TYLER WALTER STEPHANIE ZIEGLER Thank you to the families of Jessica Rebenstock and Gabrielle Tantleff who helped sponsor the Oneg Shabbat. Also, a big Yacher Koach to Cheryl Rubenstein for running the services. Page 7 PARENTS ASSOCIATION It’s hard to believe that we are starting our third month of school. It has been wonderful to see so many children in the hallways on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The children are always so happy. We were excited to join with the Youth Group again for Pizza in the Hut. Thank you to Amy Rebenstock for always handling this event and to the many other volunteers. The Parents’ Association is looking to having a Friday Night Dinner during the winter months. Please watch for the details. Next month is Hanukah, which means the children will have the opportunity to make latkes during Religious School. As always if you have any ideas for programs please let me know. Cheryl Rubenstein, PA President Page 8 YOUTH GROUP Yes I’m Still Evie By now I’m sure Eviebody knows I am the new Educational Director. That means I am Evelyn Berkowitz Educational Director (serious Evie) during Religious School times, but at youth group I am the goofy Evie, The Evster, Evwich or what other endearing name the kiddos call me. It is great to be in both positions, as I get to see my kids more and my advisors have really learned how to lead by example. It is truly refreshing to see a youth advisor carrying over my “Shtick” and seeing the kids enjoying themselves. I am still at youth group every session but, at times, I am late and Seth, Nicole, Beth or Danny are running the show. They make me proud and I am happy to say that now ALL OF HILLEL’S KIDS are MINE! I am very lucky to have had hundreds of children without birthing one of them, lol. Together we have grown up. Nicole Laurentz was mine when she was 12 now she’s….30!! Sorry Nic I thought everybody knew, lol. USY will be hosting the Fall Kinnus DECEMBER 9-11TH and I am relying on all of our congregants to open their homes again to the kinder of our Shul and let them stay with you for that weekend. I welcome back Jake Pomper, Ali Rebenstock and Sarah Walder to youth group as well as my favorite Beast (from Woodmere Middle School’s Beauty and the Beast) ALEX MANN!! Evieone (the parents and children) seem to be enjoying the NEW youth group programming and the NEW Religious school curriculum. Welcome to the New Hillel!! Have a great Month, Evie :) Page 9 RUACH READERS/SISTERHOOD BOOK CLUB On September 24th, Mildred Schoffel engaged the Ruach Readers in a lively discussion of “The Invisible Bridge,” by Julie Orringer. Mildred’s skill and knowledge enriched our understanding of the trials of Hungarian Jews in the 1930s and 1940s. Thank you and Yasher Koach to Mildred. Barbara Spetalnick facilitated our Sisterhood Book Club discussion of “A Fierce Radiance,” by Lauren Belfer, on October 4th. Barbara’s career in science enriched our understanding of the difficulties in producing penicillin and the development of other antibiotics. Thank you and yasher Koach to Barbara. On Tuesday evening, November 15th, there will be a joint Ruach Readers and Sisterhood Book Club discussion. “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lachs,” by Rebecca Skloot, will be reviewed. On the Shabbat of December 17th, 2011, there will also be a joint book review featuring “The Prophet’s Wife,” by Milton Steinberg, renowned rabbi and scholar and author of “As a Driven Leaf.” Barbara Spetalnick will be reviewing “In the Garden of the Beasts,” by Erik Larson at the April 21, 2012, Ruach Readers Discussion. The Ruach Readers review is held at the Temple immediately following Kiddush. There will also be a Ruach Readers book discussion on May 19th. The book has not as yet been selected. The Sisterhood Book Club will also be providing book reviews on March 27 and May 1. The books for these last two dates have not as yet been selected. The Sisterhood Book Club is held at Temple Hillel at 8:00 P.M. on the selected dates. If you have suggestions of books for review or you would like to lead a book discussion, please contact Renee Trachtenberg at 791-3210 or at renee1bill@aol.com. In September, we had our first meeting, which was very well attended. This meeting included a demonstration by our own wonderful cook and baker, Irene Perl, who showed us what fun we could have using filo dough. Everything that Irene made was absolutely delicious, as all that were in attendance will attest. In October we had our first book review. Barbara Spetalnick led a lively discussion of the book, "A Fierce Radiance," by Lauren Belfer. The novel, set in New York at the beginning of our involvement in World War II, focuses on the race to mass produce penicillin. It's a compelling tale of romance, mystery and betrayal. On November 2nd we have our annual dinner and fashion show. If you haven't signed up or arranged to sit with friends during this event, please do so right away. We are having a fabulous fashion show, by Joy of Belle Harbor, before a delicious dinner is served by Hillel Caterers of the Five Towns. Oh, the raffle prizes coming in are really special. Vendors will be there with merchandise for purchase. On November 7th, is our trip to the Portuguese Synagogue in Manhattan. We'll be meeting at the Valley Stream Station. We plan to enjoy lunch in the city after our docent-led tour. It will be a very enjoyable way to spend a day. Our next Sisterhood book review is scheduled for November 15. We will be discussing "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," by Rebecca Skloot. The book documents the story of Henrietta Lacks, a poor black southern farmer. She had cancer and her cancer cells were taken and cloned, without her knowledge, and became an important tool in medicine. It's a fascinating story. On October 31st, Sisterhood started a brand new Hebrew Ulpan course. In addition, our popular Israeli dancing courses continue to be offered on Mondays. In December, our Sisterhood meeting will include a sing-along with Ruth Shuster. We hope to see everyone there. We hope you all will participate in these events and we look forward to seeing you! We welcome receiving your comments plus suggestions for future topics. Rabbi Paul Freedman Director, USCJ Israel Commission Jerusalem, Israel freedman@uscj.org ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Time is running in Israel's favor Ambassador (ret.) Yoram Ettinger, "Second Thought" "Israel Hayom" newsletter, Oct. 2, 2011 http://www.israelhayom.com/site/newsletter_opinion.php?id=576 Time is running in Israel's favor, in contrast with conventional wisdom, as evidenced by the "global economic walk" and irrespective of the "global political talk." At the outset of the Jewish New Year, 5772, Israel's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is $240BN – with 3% deficit, 5.7% unemployment, 3% interest rate and 3% inflation - compared with $38BN GDP in 1990 and 1BN in 1949. Israel's credit rating has been recently upgraded by Standard & Poor, ranking it among the top OECD economies. In 1948 Israel had no significant export, compared with $6.7BN current account (mostly trade balance) surplus in 2010, featuring the US, Europe and India as the chief trading partners. Notwithstanding disturbing Turkish statements, IsraelTurkey trade volume has surged 140% since the Islamic party, AKP, assumed power in 2002: $3.45BN in 2010 compared with $1.4BN in 2002. Irrespective of political tension, the first quarter of 2011 features a 40% increase in the mutuallybeneficial Israel-Turkey trade over the first quarter of 2010. In 2011, Israel takes pride in robust exports despite the global economic meltdown, due to its highly specialized lines of exports, which correspond to vital global needs in the areas of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, biomed, agriculture, water technologies, energy alternatives, software, laptop computers, telecommunications and defense industries. The latter features Israel as the fifth largest global defense exporter. The NY-based "Trading Economics" reported a $1BN Israeli current account surplus in the first quarter of 2011. Recently, the Houston-based Noble Energy discovered proven offshore natural gas reserves, which will transform Israel – by 2014 - from nearly total reliance on imported energy, to a major exporter of natural gas. The Jewish New Year, 5772, highlights the Jewish State as "a shining high tech city upon a hill," attracting leading global companies, venture capitalists and investment banks, which seek unique manpower and cutting-edge innovative technologies. The European Community appoints Israelis to head its high-technology commissions. Microsoft's CEO, Steve Ballmer, calls Microsoft as much an Israeli company as an American company, because of the importance of its Israeli technologies, such as Kinect gaming motion-sensor interface, the fastest rising consumer electronic product in history. The same applies, increasingly, to Google, Cisco and eBay and Apple's memory systems for its iPhones, iPods and iPads. According to Intel's CEO, Intel would have been devastated by the competition, if not for its four research and development centers and two manufacturing plants in Israel, which developed its most advanced microprocessors, Pentium, Sandbridge, Atom and Centrino. Leading American venture capital funds, Sequoia, Greylock, Accel and Orbimed have become frequent investors in Israel, and some 400 global high tech companies have established research and manufacturing presence in Israel. IBM and Computers Associates (CA) just made their ninth and tenth acquisitions of Israeli companies respectively. Overseas investments in Israel's high-tech exceed any single European country and France and Germany combined. The American defense industry has been a major beneficiary of Israel's unique technological and battle capabilities. Thus, the current generation of the F-16 features over 600 modifications, introduced by Israel, making it a global success and enhancing the American employment, research and development and export infrastructures. Northrop Grumman's robotics division cooperation with – and sales to – Israel have dramatically upgraded the quality of its products, as has been the case with hundreds of US defense systems employed by Israel. In retrospect, Arab wars and terrorism, geo-political constraints and limited natural resources have been nothing but bumps on the path of an unprecedented Israeli economic, technological, educational and defense surge, which has benefitted humanity at-large.
