PAGE 2 50,000 Homes in Haiti by Jordan Bridwell, Development Director It is estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings collapsed or were severely damaged in Haiti’s earthquake on January 12. Seeing the images from Haiti over the last two months can leave one feeling helpless and a bit hopeless. Fortunately, Habitat for Humanity is hard at work to restore hope by providing the basic need of shelter that so many have lost. In February, Habitat for Humanity International announced its goal of building and rehabilitating 50,000 homes for Haitians! To achieve this, Habitat has a strategic three-phase plan: 1. RELIEF Habitat has begun distributing emergency shelter kits similar to the one shown to the left. These contain over 30 practical items such as tarps, rope, utility knives, work gloves and dust masks. These kits help families construct emergency shelters and immediately perform home repairs. 2. REHABILITATION Next, Habitat will assist with cleanup efforts, recycle usable building materials, repair homes and construct transitional shelter to meet basic needs. The transitional shelters will be designed in a way that they may be upgraded later into permanent housing solutions. 3. RECONSTRUCTION Finally, disaster-resistant homes will be constructed. Like all Habitat homes, these homes will not simply be given away, but Haitian families will provide “sweat equity” and pay down an affordable zero-interest mortgage. It is estimated that these newly designed homes cost $4,000—$6,000. Please check www.habitat.org for updates on Habitat for Humanity’s efforts in Haiti. Here is what you can do today to make an impact: Pray for the victims of the disaster. May their faith in our loving God grow during this time of crisis. Fill out Habitat’s Volunteer Interest Survey (we provided a link to the survey at www.pikespeakhabitat.org.) As you can imagine, HFHI is still months away from being able to send volunteers to Haiti, but the survey will collect your demographic and basic skills information and will sign you up for a periodic e-mail with updates regarding Habitat's response in Haiti. Donate $10 (or more!) to Habitat recovery efforts in Haiti by texting “Habitat” to 25383. This money will be used for emergency shelter kits, core house construction and the creation of Habitat Resource Centers. Nine year-old Eloise Bell sits inside her family's Habitat home, which withstood the earthquake of January 12th. It is one of 183 Habitat homes in the area, which were the closest Habitat houses to the epicenter of the earthquake. Initial reports indicate that only eight of these homes sustained damage; by comparison, it is estimated that 8,000 non-Habitat homes were destroyed in the surrounding areas. (Photos by Ezra Millstein, HFHI) Save the Date! PAGE Our 8th Annual Hike for Habitat will be June 12, 2010 at America the Beautiful Park. Registration begins April 1st. Here’s how you can start getting ready… Tell your friends about the Hike and ask them to join your team! Set a goal! You could win awesome prizes if… you are a part of the largest team, you are part of the team that raises the most money, you raise the most money as an individual, or if your team has the most spirit. Start planning your costume. This year’s theme is “Island Party”! Women Build Fundraiser Our Women Build Fundraiser, 12 Outrageous Outings, was a huge success! It was held on Feb. 3 at Tre Luna. Almost $6,000 was raised for the Women Build home. It was a wonderful evening with old and new Pikes Peak Habitat friends and supporters. Homeowners-to-be Michael and Nicholas stole the show as usual, and everyone enjoyed door prizes, food and drinks. Congratulations to Danielle Kagawa and Laura Johnson for taking home the big prize! A special thank you to everyone who purchased tickets or attended the event.
