INTRODUCTION
This year, Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd introduces the 2017 trends at Intertextile
Shanghai Home Textiles.
Nelly Rodi (international trendsetter) headed a trend committee mixing different
fields of expertise in order to gain the finest comprehension of international
lifestyle forecasts.
The committee comprises six experts: a Trendsetter, an International Home
Textile Brand, a Floral Designer, Brand Designers and Architect who
conducted meetings together in Paris lead by NellyRodiTM Agency. During
these brainstorming sessions, each expert shared their knowledge, their
inspirations and exchanged their visions of trend evolutions considering
consumer demand, the retail expertise and contract markets, and new
technologies.
To offer the most suitable trends for this forum, Nelly Rodi decided to merge
expert creative visions with sociological insights from a NellyRodiTM Agency
international consumer study: Style ID TM.
This new methodology led to the definition of this year’s four trend themes that
Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd and Nelly Rodi are happy to present to you!

styles inspire each other to produce a new, unnamed current whose
reach extends even further. This trend implies tapping one’s
emotions to come up with new creative possibilities, as yet
unexplored. It prompts one to try new things and enjoy surprises,
a variation on the ‘Happy Manifesto’ theme! ”

Nelly Rodi is the founder of the well-known and leading international
forecasting agency specialising in the analysis of consumer lifestyle demands.
After 30 years of recognised expertise on colours and fabrics for interior and
fashion fields, she advises many leading companies or fairs, from luxury fields
to more volume companies. Today, the NellyRodiTM Agency is an international
leader, represented in 21 countries, in forward-looking information for all
participants in fashion and lifestyle-related industries. She is also Vice-President
of the Paris Chamber of Commerce.

Having graduated from the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, Marianne
began her career with a famous flower designer. Surrounded by petals,
stamens, sweet peas and silk paper, she learnt from the master about the
urgency and thoroughness of a job well done.
Never staying in one place for long, she designed and created sets for luxury
brands: Kenzo, Cacharel, Loewe, Christian Dior, ELLE, etc.
Marianne loves nature and glass. With this inspiration, she designed an
exceptional collection of scented candles...
VG While studying both interior and industrial design at the École Camondo
in Paris, Vincent Grégoire also found the time to work on a number of
scenographic creations, accessories for fashion designers and advertising
visuals. Artistic director and designer of exclusive products for decorator Agnès
Comar, he joined the NellyRodiTM Agency in 1991, where he became the driving
force behind the early and rapid development of the NellyRodiTM Lifestyle
Department. Extremely committed to his clients, he travels the world in search
of the latest trends, markets and consumers.

Born in 1950 in Hong Kong and founded Alan Chan Design Company in 1980,
Alan Chan is a designer, brand consultant and artist. Alan and his company
have won more than 600 design awards locally and internationally.
In 2002, Alan became the first Chinese designer to be invited by the prestigious
Japanese graphic design gallery – Ginza Graphic Gallery in Tokyo to hold his
solo exhibition. The ‘Oriental Passion Western Harmony’ design philosophy
initiated by Alan has been well-recognized by the international design scene,
and has brought immense influence to the younger generation of designers.
Since 2000, Alan ventured into the new arena of fine arts. Besides being
selected for Shanghai Biennale and Hong Kong Contemporary Art Award, he
was also the first Hong Kong designer ever being invited to hold a solo
exhibition at the Shanghai Art Museum in 2007. Another solo exhibition took
place in Hong Kong Heritage Museum back in 2003 also received widespread
acclaim. In 2010 Chan developed his iPhone photography series ‘iEye-ai’,
which has been exhibited in various Asia cities.

“As to fashion, I put forward the subject of TOUCH: Touch is Luxury.
Touch is about sensorial experience and imagination, metaphor
and memory of lifestyle.
If Luxury is defined to be an excellent comprehension on life
which has never been experienced, and fashion is defined to
be transition in duration of collective aesthetic feeling/taste,
experience of touch shall be luxury, and creation of fashion shall
be subject setting through touch experience and achievement of
luxury reproduction formed by ingenious general collocation via
color, texture and form.”

Chu Po-Yang became the member of AAGDG Group in 1996, meanwhile he

The ‘I’ from ‘I think therefore I am’ refers to a different person,
which has been an irresistible trend.
No matter in reality or in dreams, our perceiving and thinking
continue. However, the natural simplicity in the real world makes
people much warmer than the tedious polishing in the fantastic
dreams. In the face of nature, between the dialogue of the earth and
our inner selves, some intangible trends have been created. Peeping
through the dust of centuries, the moment time slips by, in the
shadow trends hide, and all natural changes are subject to some
trends, for such is the way of Heaven and Earth. ‘Man obey the
rules of the Earth, the Earth obey the rules of the Heaven, the
Heaven obey the rules of Dao, and Dao obey the rules of the Nature’.
From this, we can see that the law reflected by ‘Dao’ is ‘Natural’.
Innovation comes from the courage of self-challenging, it demands
sharpened expertise as well. Just as Zhu Xi, a poet in the Southern
Song Dynasty, said ‘The fresh water comes from the springhead’.”
Lu Hong Wei is member of the committee of China National Interior Decoration
Association, 8 years’ experience as university teacher. He found Yunnan Beiyi
Design Company in 2001, and had the Shanghai branch in 2006. He is
cruising in design life good at expression with percipient and dialectic view.

discipline.

Spirit of the Season
Man’s ancestral, primal instinct of pushing back the boundaries of his
environment, as well as his own limits, is once again coming masterfully to
the fore.
No more question of standing still. It is this influence that encourages us to
dare again, look towards an unknown elsewhere, search for unprecedented
stories and identities to invent. The human becomes a malleable material to
shape, and nature a laboratory where science and spirituality meet. And as
virtual reality contributes to modifying our lives a little more every day, the
distinction between fiction and reality dissolves. It’s a new and exciting deal
where carte blanche is given to the domains of design and creation to reinvent
our environment and daily lives.

Go for pretty fabrics that have received
artisan treatments and contain natural
plant fibers (e.g. cotton, linen and wild
silk). Pair them with sheer, organdy
curtains. Harmonize different weaves
(plain and fancy) and filling yarns (e.g.
yarn-dyed chambray with dupioni silks).
Opt for light matelassé fabrics and fine
French quilting effects, not to mention
natural materials that are textured in relief
or look stonewashed, tarred, burnt, oiled
or lacquered. Panne velvet is good.

Play with the graphic impact of basic /
fancy weaves. Take inspiration from tree
bark, and the veins and knots of exotic
woods. Use prints with stylized plant motifs
(e.g. leaves, seeds, stems and roots) in
the batik-inspired wax style or in «line
drawing» mode. Don’t forget tie-dye
effects. Apply a few wood beads to add
excitement to the whole. Coordinate
with watercolor effects (e.g. splotches
and patterns).

Precious materials indicate a taste for
collecting and formal show, including
applications of ornamental stones, cords
and tassels, Lurex, fur and plumes. Glossy
finishes for textiles (taffetas, silks, vinyls,
lacquered fabrics, organzas, velvets and
damasks) put the finishing touch to the
charm of an esthete’s lifestyle.
