S TOR I E S
A DOCTOR.
A PROMISE.
AN IRON HEART.
W
HAT YOU SEE HERE is the result of not
giving up — and I don’t mean by me. I’m alive
today because my UW Medicine physician
didn’t give up on me.
Even after a complex, 15-hour surgery, he was still by my
side in the ICU. So he was there when I flatlined as my
panicked wife pleaded with me to stay strong, and he,
straddling me, reached into my chest and pumped my
heart with his hand.
He was only a phone call away weeks later when I had a
near-fatal allergic reaction, and again for my subsequent
stroke. And he found me the support I needed when I
told him I was signing up for the Ironman.
So how could I give up when, in my first race, my pedal
broke with 30 miles left to ride? Or when I was past the
cutoff time, and my body was past its limit? The short
answer is I couldn’t.

WELCOME
From Seattle Theatre Group, a non-profit arts organization
As a bit of a departure from the normal welcome letter from our organizational
leadership, I was asked to share a bit of my experience in Africa, in alignment with this
presentation of Disney’s THE LION KING. My experiences in Africa are mostly connected
to the work that Seattle Theatre Group does as a member of the Africa Contemporary
Arts Consortium – a group of arts organizations across the country aligned by our
common mission to connect Africa and the U.S. through arts and culture. It is through
participation in this organization that STG presents African artists such as South African
dancer/choreographer Gregory Maqoma, presented this past fall in partnership with On
the Boards.
I have never been to the Serengeti, the backdrop for THE LION KING story, but a few
years ago members from the Consortium traveled together to Nairobi, Kenya for a
3-day meeting with artists. In our efforts to connect the two continents, it is imperative
for us to make some of those connections on the African continent. At the end of our
scheduled meetings in Nairobi, we ventured out to experience the culture, life and
landscape of this part of Northern Africa. What resulted was one of the most memorable
moments of my entire life.
One of our colleagues contacted a friend whose son and wife resided outside of Nairobi,
in an area familiar to many from its depiction in the film Out of Africa. As we rounded an
area of the road on our way to Karen, named for the subject of the film, Karen Blixen, it
was as if we had driven right into the movie screen approaching what was once known
as Maasailand. The Great Rift Valley is a 6,000-mile ridge expanse that runs through
Kenya and Tanzania and parts of the Serengeti. There is simply nothing more beautiful
than this piece of seemingly unspoiled land where some of the world’s most amazing
animals roam.
Dan Paulus
Art Director
For years, I have collected images of the
beautiful Maasai people. I was stunned to
look down the ridge and see a group of
Maasai walking nobly with their cattle. Just
as in the images I had collected, they wore
bright red wraps, donned tightly coiled hair
locks, wore leather sandals, amazing beads
around their heads and necks, and carried
sticks to aide them in guiding their herd.

As is depicted in Disney’s THE LION KING,
Africa is filled with intriguing ecosystems
of relationships and survival. The
interrelationships between people, animals,
and geography are complex. Each time I see Disney’s THE LION KING, I am transported
back to that Sunday afternoon I stood above the Great Rift Valley and watched the
Maasai approach. I channel Mufasa. By continuing to grow our relationship with Africa,
STG is in some ways symbolic of Simba. Incorporating the art and life of Africa into our
programming, we are sustaining vital elements of the circle of life.
With each visit to this great continent, and with every story that comes from Africa, we
hope to be touched by some message that piques our curiosity. This production sparks
my interest in learning more about the complicated relationships in the African animal
kingdom. My sincere thanks to STG for your unwavering interest in Africa and her arts
and culture, and to KeyBank’s Broadway at the Paramount for allowing us to enjoy this
story and the unparalleled creativity employed to tell it.

Type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis—they’re all
autoimmune diseases and they’re all connected. And so is the way we’re fighting
them. By researching the underlying causes of immune system malfunctions,
the breakthroughs we make can be applied against many diseases, and have the
potential to improve the lives of millions of people around the world.
Progress against one autoimmune disease is progress against them all.

CHRIS MONTAN (Executive Music Producer)
joined Disney in 1984 and is currently
president of Walt Disney Music. Under his
guidance as head of music, soundtracks from
nine theatrical releases (Cocktail, Beaches, The
Little Mermaid, Pretty Woman, Beauty and
the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas
and Tarzan®) were certified multiplatinum.
Additionally, the Studio received GRAMMY®,
Golden Globe and Academy® Award
recognition for many of its music entries. Most
recently he served as executive producer of
the Wonderful World of Disney’s production
of “Annie,” as well as a producer with the
television production of Rodgers and Ham
merstein’s “Cinderella,” which was nominated
for seven Emmy® Awards.
DISNEY THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS,
a division of The Walt Disney Studios, was
formed in 1994 and operates under the
direction of Thomas Schumacher. Worldwide,
its eight Broadway titles have been seen
by over 128 million theatergoers and have
grossed over $9 billion. With 15 productions
currently produced or licensed, a Disney
musical is being performed professionally
somewhere on the planet virtually every
hour of the day. The company’s inaugural
production, Beauty and the Beast, opened
in 1994. It played a remarkable 13 year
run on Broadway and has been produced
in 28 countries worldwide. In November
1997, Disney opened The Lion King, which
received six 1998 Tony® Awards including
Best Musical and is now the highest grossing
show in Broadway history. In its 17th
smash year, it has welcomed over 70 million
visitors worldwide to date. The Lion King
can also currently be seen on tour across
North America, the U.K., and Japan, and
in London’s West End, Hamburg, Tokyo,
Madrid, Sao Paulo, and Sydney, Australia,
a total of ten concurrent productions
worldwide. Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida
opened on Broadway next, winning four
22 SEATTLE THEATRE GROUP
2000 Tony Awards, and spawning productions around the world. Mary Poppins, a
co-production with Cameron Mackintosh,
opened in London in 2004 and established
itself as one of the biggest stage musical
successes to emerge in recent years, launching
seven productions on three continents.
Following a six year Tony-winning Broadway
run, the title is now being licensed to North
American professional theatres. Tarzan®,
which opened on Broadway in 2006, is now
an international hit with an award-winning
production in its 6th year in Germany. In
January 2008, The Little Mermaid opened on
Broadway and was the #1-selling new musical
of that year. Its success continues with new
productions in Russia and Japan. Disney
Theatrical Productions opened two critically
acclaimed productions on Broadway in 2012,
receiving seven Tony Awards between them:
Newsies, in its second year at the Nederlander
Theatre, and Peter and the Starcatcher, which
enjoyed a two year New York run. Other
successful stage musical ventures have
included King David in concert, the national
tour of On The Record, several touring
versions of Disney’s High School Musical, and
Der Glöckner Von Notre Dame in Berlin. In
addition, DTP licenses stage performance
rights to more than a dozen Disney musicals
around the world through Music Theatre
International. Its new musical, Aladdin, opens
on Broadway this spring.

Did you know that The Neptune Theatre originally opened its doors
in November 1921 as a single-screen movie house? It is the only intact
survivor of five University District movie houses opened during the
silent film era. In 2011, STG signed a long-term lease to transform
and operate The Neptune Theatre as a performing arts destination for
concerts, comedy, community engagements and film.
Come learn more about the history of this amazing landmark theater
and experience the technical workings of the stage and backstage
operations! Neptune Theatre tours are on the third Saturday of every
month and are led by members of our well-studied volunteer staff.
Visit STGpresents.org/Neptune for more information.

THE SUIT
Continuing Partnership…
Pretty
close

– THE NEW YORK TIMES
MARCH 19 - APRIL 6, 2014
SEATTLE REPERTORY THEATRE
Based on The Suit by Can Themba,
Mothobi Mutloatse, and Barney Simon.
Direction, adaptation, and music by Peter Brook,
Marie Hélène Estienne, & Franck Krawczyk.
Continuing our partnership
with Seattle Repertory Theatre,
STG presents an adaptation
of South African writer Can
Themba’s story The Suit, directed
by the legendary Peter Brook
(The Tragedy of Hamlet, 2001).
The play brings to the stage a
charming and disquieting parable
about forgiveness set in apartheid
South Africa. Combining a rich
musical score with a remarkably
simple staging, The Suit follows
a cuckolded husband who doles
out an unusual punishment to
his wife: he asks that she treat her
lover’s abandoned suit as a guest
of honor in their home.
Writer Can Themba is
considered one of South Africa’s
most distinguished writers.
Having won many awards, he has
placed himself among a group of
South African writers dedicated
to chronicling the anguish,
triumphs, disillusionment and
passionate hopes of the struggling
masses. Themba wrote most of
his work in Sophiatown, where
The Suit is set, before it was
destroyed under the provisions of
the apartheid Group Areas Act.
Daniel Canodoce “Can” Themba
died in the late 1960’s, prior to the
end of apartheid.

I am flattered to think I might have something to offer another
generation of visionary musical minds, of players, and writers.
When I choose to teach it is not so much to pass on what I do, or
think I know, but to pass on the possibility of music, the opportunity
to be, make, hear something new, unique and individual.

This year we had over 80 artists
audition for our annual MORE MUSIC @
THE MOORE program, our young artist
development program for selected young
musicians representing diverse music
genres. The program provides young artists
training and rehearsal time with professional
musicians and production and promotional
support. They also get the exciting opportunity to perform on the stage of the historic
Moore Theatre, joining the likes of many rock
legends! The performance celebrates the rich
musical talent of youth in our community
and provides musicians the opportunity to
make music together and perform for an
audience.
Meshell Ndegeocello returns this season
as the Music Director. The fearsome bassist
and prolific songwriter and 10 time Grammy
Award nominee, will once again be up to the
challenge to bring us a great show of collaborations, music, and fun! Check out STGTV

EXPLORING MUSIC WITH STG
Jake Shimabukuro
PARAMOUNT THEATRE
APRIL 26, 2014 | 8PM
Your Dollars @ Work
Connecting great artists
of today with great
artists of tomorrow
The musician has defined
ukulele music for a modern
audience, composing
complex arrangements
on what many consider
a “simple” instrument.
In his young career, ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukuro has already redefined an under-theradar instrument, and has been declared a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone, won accolades from the
likes of Eddie Vedder and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, wowed audiences on TV (Jimmy Kimmel, Conan),
earned comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis, and even played in front of the Queen of
England. With his new record Grand Ukulele, Shimabukuro’s star may burn even brighter.
His music incorporates elements of jazz, blues, funk, bluegrass, classical, folk and flamenco.
He’s even experimented with effects pedals and digital processors as a means to expand the
instrument’s sound. He’s collaborated with the likes of Jimmy Buffett, Ziggy Marley, Cyndi
Lauper and Yo-Yo Ma, and his version of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” became
a viral hit when a video was released on YouTube in 2006.
Jesse Cook
MOORE THEATRE
MAY 16, 2014 | 8PM
With eight studio albums, several European and Asian tours, multiple Canadian tours, a
highly successful Public Television Special, and a recent five-month U.S. tour under his belt,
award-winning guitar phenomenon Jesse Cook takes the Moore stage in May. And, for this
latest recording he wanted to trace rumba flamenco back to its roots in Cuba. His instincts
though got the better of him and he wound up spending time in Bogota, Colombia.
Based in Toronto, Jesse Cook has been recording and performing music internationally
for over seventeen years. He is a JUNO Award-winning artist and three-time recipient of the
Canadian Smooth Jazz Award for “Guitarist of the Year”. His previous release, The Rumba
Foundation, debuted at #1 on iTunes Canada and the DVD for the release premiered on PBS.
The past two years have seen Cook tour extensively to sold-out crowds throughout the
world, performing at both the Singapore and Dubai Jazz Festivals, the Cumbre Tajín Festival
in Mexico, and electrifying audiences from the U.S. to Italy to Lebanon. With over one
million album sales worldwide, Jesse Cook has spawned a truly global fan base

HOMEGROWN HOME LOANS
For more than 75 years BECU has been helping Washington residents finance homes they love. More than
just being a great deal, our fixed- and adjustable-rate home loans are straightforward and easy-to-understand,
so you shouldn’t be surprised by hidden fees or unexpected charges. Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer
or looking to upgrade with a jumbo loan, we’ll help you find the right mortgage to fit your individual needs
and budget. Because at BECU, we don’t view lending as a transaction. We view it as a relationship—one that
we look forward to sharing with you.
