FISHING SHOW SCHEDULE March 5, Rolling Meadows High School Fishing Show March 18, 2016 7PM- 11PM, FOP Fish and Sports Show, Bourbon Street, 3359 West 115th St Summary Report on the 2015 Muskie’s Inc. Members Only Fishing Contest & the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Voluntary Muskie Creel Survey By Ray Thompson-Chairman, Illini Muskies Alliance This article is based on the 2015 Muskie’s, Inc. Members Only Fishing Contest and the 2015 Illinois Department of Natural Resources Voluntary Muskie Creel Survey. I recently received the Illinois only portion of the MI contest results provided by Dan Koniewicz. I’d like to thank Dan for his help. I forwarded the MI report to Mike McClelland, Inland Waters Program Manager, for the IDNR. Mike has taken over the Creel Survey from retired Jim Mick. Mike sorted the “Green Card” mail entries and the on line entries, and then combined the MI and CS lists. Muskie’s Inc. members captured 528 muskies from 30 inches to 49.25 inches. The Creel Survey produced an additional 73 fish (After the MI duplicates were removed.) from 16 inches to 48.5 inches. A total of 601 fish were analyzed. The following 23 bodies of water reported muskies in the contest. The body of water is followed by the largest fish reported. Over half of these bodies of water (60.8%) produced muskie of 40” or larger. Banner Marsh-(includes Johnson-40” and Shove-39”) Busse-35” Candlewick-38.5” Carlton-44” Evergreen-36” Fox Chain-(includes Bliuff-41”, Catherone-44”, Channel-48”, Marie-47.5” and the Fox River-40”) George-43.25” Goldeneye-37.5” Heidecke-40” Kinkaid-46” McMaster-49.25” Mallard-42” Otter-16” Pierce-39” Prairie-44.5” Salt Creek-35” Shabbona-44” Shelbyville-38”-(includes the Kaskaskia River-48”) Spring (North)-42” Storey-46” Sule-32” Super-37.5” Waterford-40” The column below lists the top 5 bodies of water, followed by the percentage of all fish reported in the both contests, in order of productivity. These 5 bodies of water accounted for over 80 percent of all fish reported. The Fox Chain not only produced the most fish per body of water in these contests, but it also produced more fish than the next four bodies of water combined! Fox Chain-41%-(includes five lakes in the Fox Chain and the Fox River) Kinkaid-17% Storey-11% Shabbona-6% Shelbyville-5%-(includes the Kaskaskia River) The accuracy of any study is affected by the amount of data used. Unfortunately, many anglers fail to report their fish in either contest and the vast majority of those reported in the MI contest, are not registered in the Illinois Voluntary Creel Survey. Thus, the accuracy of the creel survey is diminished and misleading information may be used as a basis for future muskie management decisions in Illinois. Each year, the Illini Muskies Alliance awards a trophy to the angler releasing the largest muskie captured the year before. The angler must be in good standing with his club at the time of the capture and must register his fish in the Creel Survey. The 2015 trophy will be presented to Bob Taylor of the Lake Shelbyville Muskie Club for his 48.5” Lake McMaster catch. A larger muskie (49.25” also from Lake McMaster) was entered in the MI contest, however the angler never entered it in the Creel Survey. Participation in the CS is easy. Funds are partially provided by the IMA. Simply fill out a postage paid "Green Card" for any size muskie captured. (Available at local concession stands, bait shops or state park offices.) If you can't locate a "Green Card", contact one of the eleven IMA member organizations or an IMA representative. Go to www.illinimuskiesalliance.org for more information on the eleven IMA member organizations. Drop the "Green Card", in the mail or register your muskie on line at www.Ifishillinois.org. The following year, you'll receive a certificate, suitable for framing, as a thank you for participating in the CS. The IMA continues to support and promote the CS through education and articles like this one. The IMA has asked for participation by its member organizations in reporting Illinois muskie catches for their members. We have also asked the IMTT and PMTT professional muskie tournaments, held in Illinois waters to require creel survey participation in their contest rules. We ask the help of all Illinois muskie club members to contact their fish contest chairmen and urge them to make sure that all their members report their Illinois muskie catches in the Illinois Voluntary Muskie Creel Survey.
