Eating
is one of the most basic of human needs.
Seniors can have different challenges to basic nutrition: a loss of appetite, a change in how foods taste,
a challenge of purchasing food items, difficulty preparing food items, restrictive diet orders, or a lack of
interest in eating alone. Here are some tips for better
elderly diet:
• Stay Hydrated: sip some liquids throughout the day.
The more fruits and vegetables in our diets, the more
naturally hydrated we are.
• Involve the person as much as possible when preparing meals. Take a trip to the grocery store together and
try to guide them towards healthy choices.
At Heritage Health in Hoopeston, we are proud of
the meals we serve our Seniors. We strive to provide
a quality experience as well as quality meals in a congregate setting that encourages positive interactions.
• Prepare meals together: the smell of the food cooking, and the experience of being around the preparation, may stimulate the appetite for the meal.
• Prepare nostalgic meals: Familiar meals can bring
back memories of happy times.
• Encourage variety: increase the variety of how food
is prepared and how it is seasoned.
• Make Lunch the big meal of the day: Often by dinner,
seniors are too tired to finish meals.
• Go for the Grain: when making decisions about
which breads to choose, always go for the one higher
in whole grains.
Our Food Service staff is committed to providing quality meals that entice our seniors to enjoy mealtimes.
Plus we have a number of Activity programs that feature unique snacks. For example, on St. Patrick’s day,
a hot potato bar was served and for The Circus Party
on April 3, homemade Elephant Ears will be prepared!
A special Thank You to the Food Service specialists
who make our mealtimes amazing!

Resident spotlight
Marie (Thompson) Jones
Marie
was born to her parents Lula and Robert
Thompson on a little farm between Rankin and Rossville on November 7, 1924. Marie had five brothers
and one sister (two of her siblings still live in Westville). She and her siblings loved to play ‘Kick the Can’
in the middle of the street. Marie went to school in
Rossville through 8th grade and then cleaned houses
for employment. She also worked at a grocery store
for Bruce and Marjorie Young, as a cash register and
greeter for nine years. Marie also worked at a factory
called, Watseka Condensor.
One of Marie’s best qualities is she is a really good
friend to have. She and Wanita Monroney used to
go to McDonald’s every day for coffee. Now Marie’s
friends have moved to Heritage Health, where they
continue to share meals and their bond of friendship.
Thank you, Marie, for choosing Heritage Health.
Marie met George Jones and they dated for three
years before marrying. George farmed and worked at
FMC at night. For fun, they gathered with four other
couples for Supper Club, fixing supper for one another
and playing euchre until late at night.
Marie continues to read and enjoys Danielle Steel
books the best. She likes to visit with friends, play
RummiKub, cards and Bingo. It’s been a wonderful
opportunity getting to know Marie – as she genuinely
seems to care for others and have an interest in others’
lives.
Trisha, RN and Wilma Cooley made a great team for
the St. Patrick's Day Treasure Hunt.

Activities note
by Tanya McVicker
A special celebration for our volunteers will be held,
April 9th. The contributions that our volunteers make
here are immeasurable. You make us laugh, you encourage us to sing, you read to us and share stories, you
help us stay organized and you make us feel beautiful.
Honorary Volunteers:
• ElderSource group
• Chestnut Street Church of Christ Singers
• Karen Bray • Ellen Franklin • Sharon Frazier
• Aimee Lacey • Bill Musk • Rosalie Hickman
• Marsha Jones • Susan Ingerham • Gary Milton
It can be intimidating when you first start to volunteer
because you don’t know any of the residents. Keep in
mind that not every resident is the same -- they have
different personalities and interests, just like you. Act
like you’re meeting people your own age and don’t be
afraid to be yourself. Tell them about your hobbies and
interests and ask them about theirs. Chances are, you
might have more in common than you think!
We would love to host more volunteers who want to
reach out and share their lives with seniors living here.
The process is simple:
1.) Call us at 283-8247 and let us know that you or a group would like to volunteer.
2.) Think about how often you are available.
3.) How do you want to offer your time.
4.) Fill out the necessary paperwork and background check to ensure the safety of our residents.
5.) Go through orientation
6.) Be yourself.

in a treasure hunt! Geri really enjoyed the poems that
lead to the next clues of the treasure hunt!
