Last year she finished a near world circumnavigation but the most interesting part was the 18 months she spent in the South Pacific. Pamela Stephenson-Connolly (the wife of the Scottish comedian, Billy Connolly) is the owner. Her great-grandfather was Robert Louis Stevenson who wrote “Treasure Island” and TAKAPUNA was her first boat. After purchasing her she did a minor refit and sailed to the South Pacific to re-trace the passage of her grandfather. She wrote and published a book about the experience: “TREASURE ISLANDS” which is an interesting read about places that a “white boat” has not been seen for many years. An emotional and exciting adventure for a relatively inexperienced owner. Dennis Frederiksen – New Amels 212 Another major new build project with Dennis Frederiksen of Fraser Yachts Monaco is the new Amels 212, Project 6501 (65.50m). The exterior design is by Tim Heywood and the interior is by Andrew Winch. This is a winning combination for this very experienced Russian client, who already has several new build projects under his belt. The Amels 212 is being designed for worldwide cruising with a delivery date of January 2011. 11 Bombardier Jets - The Superbowl During the 2008 SUPERBOWL we were invited to BOMBARDIER’s Touchdown Celebration in Glendale, Arizona. David Legrand We’d like to share with Fraser News you an important change to the Management Team at Fraser Yachts. Since the beginning of the year, David Legrand has changed position in the company and decided to face a new challenge. David is a very well-known face at Fraser Yachts and throughout the luxury yacht industry. He led our worldwide charter division where he was instrumental in the development of our charter fleet, team of brokers and the considerable growth of our business. As a young man, David logged over 100,000 miles at sea, including twelve Atlantic Ocean crossings. He also spent 3 years running his own charter company and also a shipyard. This experience provided him with a strong nautical and technical background enabling him also to quickly get to grips with the commercial side of yachting. This spurred him on to work in the world of Vassilis Fotilas – Trainee Broker Program, Monaco Vassilis Fotilas recently joined Fraser Yachts, following two years with Ekka Yachts S.A. in Greece. Ekka Yachts is the Ferretti Group dealer and is the only dealership in the world carrying all nine of the Ferretti Group yacht brands. Vassilis speaks fluent Greek and perfect English and will be working alongside Richard Earp as he develops his knowledge and understanding of the superyacht industry. His appointment is part of the Fraser Yachts trainee broker program whereby younger brokers with solid experience in the smaller boat market work alongside highly experienced and respected superyacht brokers to hone their skills and knowledge. superyachts and, in 1999, he joined Fraser Yachts operating out of Monaco. He was trusted with developing the relatively young charter marketing division before taking over the overall management of the charter retail division, which he managed successfully for 3 years. It was during this period as Director of the charter division that David proposed the launch of a new division called the Azimut Charter Club (ACC), dedicated to chartering and managing Azimut yachts. ACC is now a thriving division of Fraser Yachts with operations across the world. After serving on the Fraser Yachts Board of Directors and after four years on the Board of the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers’ Association (MYBA), David has now decided to develop his true passion, sales. His unique background and energy will stand him in good stead for success in this new field. He combines commercial know-how and yachting skills, an extensive worldwide network of contacts and in-depth knowledge of the industry with an unbridled love for the sea. Fraser Yachts is pleased to announce his move to the sales team where he will now operate as a sales broker. Gerrard Harvey– New Director of Yacht Management Originally from Christchurch New Zealand, Gerrard joined the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1971 after completing High School education at Marist Brothers in Palmerston North. At the time of his resignation from the Royal New Zealand Navy, Gerrard held the rank of Commander and was the Director Marine Engineering, Director Naval Engineering Plans and Commanding Officer of HMNZS Wakefield at Defence Headquarters in Wellington. In 1995 some eighteen months after joining the Blue Lagoon Cruises management team, Gerrard was promoted to the position of CEO. One year later he was invited to join the Board of Directors of the company and assumed the position as CEO & Managing Director of Blue Lagoon Cruises. We are delighted that he has now joined Fraser Yachts, overseeing the entire Yacht Management team worldwide. Italian Shipyard Tour Fraser News Just after the Monaco show Fraser Yachts organized a “New Construction Tour” for the Sales Brokers. This time Italy was on the agenda having been in Germany and The Netherlands earlier in the year. Besides touring the shipyards we undertook some formal training and updating on specifications, contracts, building technology, product development, project management and the role of the broker during a new build project. The market is changing rapidly and we are seeing an increasing demand from owners asking for support during new construction. We visited Benetti, Perini Navi, CRN and ISA covering different types of yachts including power and sail, series and custom, composite, steel and aluminum. We aim to constantly improve our knowledge and skill-base and inhouse training is a crucial part of our strategy to remain the industry experts. Dennis Frederiksen – New Benetti 251 A new 56.00m, Benetti 251 Project has been taken on by Dennis Frederiksen, of Fraser Yachts Monaco. One of his long standing Irish clients was initially looking to build a 52 metre Benetti but during negotiations changed his mind for the Benetti 56 metre. The project surveyor is Patton Marin, who will work closely with the entire team until the delivery in June 2010. 15 Lania Rittenhouse – New Director of Charter Retail, Fort Lauderdale Fraser Yachts is very proud to announce the arrival of Lania Rittenhouse. As the new Director of Charter Retail she will be leading this rapidly expanding division, based in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Lania brings with her a rich history of multi cultural and international experience from a variety of industries including cruise, tourism, and high-end retail. She has lived and traveled in over 65 countries, and speaks French and German in addition to her native English. Lania has a proven ability to lead strategic initiatives with 20 years in marketing, operations, revenue enhancement and international business development. Tribu’ – New Charter Yacht Tribu’ is a true custom-built yacht with plain and unembellished exteriors that belie the sophisticated modernist interior. She’s a rarity among today’s recent launches, an avant-garde interior that combines physical comfort with an eclectic, austerely modernist appearance with no hint of pretension. She has been designed to meet her owner’s every wish and requirement from the vast salon divided into separate areas to the upper deck’s extensive owner’s suite, comprising office, bedroom, bathroom, gymnasium and sauna. Julian Calder – New Haakvoort Having been greatly impressed with the successful management of his 40m yacht under the experienced eyes of Roberto Migliaccio and Alan Armstrong a five time yacht owner recently expressed his desire to upgrade to a bigger yacht. Despite having built several yachts without a broker involved, the client’s experience of the professionalism of Fraser Yachts’ management team persuaded him that he would undoubtedly benefit from our brokerage 16 Yacht Management services. Just 3 months after their first meeting, It was a busy second half to 2007 in our Monaco Yacht Management under construction, negotiated the price, technical office and what has been particularly pleasing is the renewed yacht management contracts for both Nou Nou V (to be renamed Nanook) and Freemont, both of which have been sold to new Owners. We have also been awarded the Management of Axioma – a 47 metre ISA which is a sistership to Ellix Too. It took nearly two years from the first meeting with the owner’s representative until the final signature but we are delighted to be working with them closely throughout 2008 and beyond. We also list the yacht for chartering and she is currently in the Maldives. Contracts have also been signed for Allegro – a newbuild Benetti Classic due for delivery in April 2008 and Sanoo a 40 mtr CRN. We have been involved in two very interesting and unusual repairs. On one yacht a stabilizer fin was replaced in-water off Gibraltar, causing minimal disruption to that yacht’s schedule, while another yacht suffered a badly bent propeller blade such that one shaft could not be used. Again this was repaired with full Classification Approval, in-water, this time in the Maldives. The repair work utilised the very latest techniques, much more common in the “commercial” shipping world than in yachting, where the general reaction would likely be that the yacht would have required docking. Both these repairs were carried out by UMC, a company based near Southampton and which is actually a subsidiary of V.Ships one of the Fraser Yachts shareholders. Julian Calder, Hein Velema and Antonio Pozzi had located an appropriate yard with a yacht already specifications and Building Contract, selected a new interior designer, revised the General Arrangement and agreed the price of all required changes. Fraser Yachts were able to witness the signatures as the client took over the existing build contract for a 50m Haakvoort currently in build at the Monnickendam yard. The client subsequently chose to appoint Fraser Yachts’ Director of New Construction, Antonio Pozzi to manage the build. This is testament to the benefits that the Fraser Yachts’ team brings with its one-stopshop service approach. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead!” Josh Gulbranson – New Sales Broker, Fort Lauderdale Josh Gulbranson is now with the Fraser Yachts Sales Team based in Fort Lauderdale. Josh spent 15 of those 20 years involved in luxury yacht operations. xcess E All Areas The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is not a racing car in disguise but instead the grandest of grand tourers. L ike Oscar Wilde, Ferdinand Piech always craved the best. At Porsche, he demolished his rivals with the legendary 917. At Audi, he came up with the Quattro and, at VW, he paid peanuts for the Bugatti name before spending big money on the development of the Veyron. Although Piech initially proposed an eighteen-cylinder engine, he eventually settled for the W-16, which is composed of two 4.0 litre W8 units. But the monosyllabic Austrian would not compromise on his performance targets. Maximum power had 20 to nudge the 1000hp threshold and the maximum speed had to be in excess of 249mph. His engineers hated the challenge, citing insurmountable cooling and aerodynamic problems, but the chairman did not budge; no styling changes, no performance compromises, no excuses. In the beginning it was chaos. More than 600 problems with the basic packaging requirements needed resolving and the promised power output existed only on paper. Also, it is impossible to completely cool down that amount of energy. A stringent airflow management system needed to be devised that would increase the amount of air to the engine. Ten radiators and some very clever engineering later, the Veyron 16.4 is a truly groundbreaking vehicle. This 4300 pound two-seater reaches 0 to 62mph in 2.5 seconds, 0 to 125mph in 7.3 seconds, and 0 to 188mph in 16.7 seconds. Before you can reach the 254mph top speed, the car’s aerodynamic profile needs to be adjusted. Turning the ‘speed key’ located between the seat and the sill, the rear wing and the tail spoiler above it retract almost fully, the front diffuser panels close and the ride height drops to 2.6 inches at the front and 2.8 inches at the back. At very high speeds the roadholding is simply phenomenal, and the car is incredibly stable. In stop-and-go traffic, all air deflectors automatically go into maximum cool-down mode. It tracks with precision through fast or slow corners and things like traction or lift-off oversteer are never an issue. Four wheel drive ensures optimum stability in all conditions, with a dynamic torque split that typically sends 70 to 80 per cent of the torque to the rear wheels, which are governed by an electronic diff lock. The transmission is a mighty sevenspeed DSG manu-matic. You can change gears with your thumbs or via the joystick in the centre console, which also selects the drive mode of choice. I t may just be a coincidence, or quite simply a case of being in the right place at the right time, but in the five years since Ian Pelham joined The Crew Network (TCN) the company has gone from being 30 one of the smallest crew recruitment businesses, to the largest with the best reputation in the industry. And how exactly have they managed this? Customer service, customer service, customer service, says Ian. “I definitely got on board at a very good time, just as TCN’s growth accelerated,” he says. “Which is largely down to our company-wide focus on client and crew satisfaction — without crew, we don’t have a job.” Following a serendipitous arrival into crew recruitment, when a misplaced CV landed Ian his first role in cruise ship personnel despite no previous experience and a background in finance, Ian has been learning on the job ever since. “I got to grips with cruise ship personnel by studying books, supportive colleagues and basic trial and error,” admits Ian. “The first three stewardesses I hired were fired within a matter of weeks! But when I moved to Fraser Yachts in 2002 I found the difference between the luxury yacht market and even high-end cruise lines to be a real eye-opener, they are worlds apart in terms of client expectations and you get to learn quickly that ‘good enough’ is never good enough — it has to be the best.” The impact of TCN’s success has meant the company has grown from two small US offices in Florida and California to its current eight offices located worldwide, including France, Spain, Italy, and New Zealand. “We’re opening new offices in Newport and Rhode With 46,000 crew members on its database, and never servicing less than 200 yachts at any one time, crew recruitment stands out as a specialised industry with huge responsibilities to Island within the next three “There will always be times months, as well as looking to when a client is not satisfied, venture further into Europe,” or a captain is too specific says Ian. “In order to meet (or even non-specific) about the needs of our clients it’s what they want, and we have imperative that we have a to remind them that we can’t visible physical presence on a replace people, only the global scale.” position,” adds Ian. “But as With 46,000 crew members 32 uphold. on its database, and never servicing less than 200 yachts at any one time, crew recruitment stands out as a specialised industry with huge responsibilities to uphold. long as the applicant has given thought to the role, maintains a professional and realistic attitude, and speaks English (the language of the sea), then they stand a good chance of being compatibly placed.” Client confidentiality lies at And there’s little doubt that the heart of the job, with the crewing on a yacht can be a location, destination and on life-enhancing experience. board inhabitants of a yacht The most popular yachting kept to a strict need-to-know destinations are the Caribbean basis. And when that’s combined with the plethora of untapped potential crew members living the world over, the growth for this industry, and for TCN, is unlimited.” Waves Making Striving to be the best by producing iconic work is the natural ambition of any worthy designer, but achieving that elusive goal while simultaneously delivering the yacht of his client’s dreams is what makes Tim Heywood stand out from the crowd. 34 F or award-winning yacht designer, Tim Heywood, the secret to creative success is to keep on evolving fresh ideas by drawing on the objects that surround him. Rather than look to fellow designers for inspiration, or be influenced by what trends are borne out of fashion, Heywood prefers to keep his cards close to his chest and actively chooses not to sneak a peak at the opposition. “I want to innovate and be original,” he says, “not simply mimic what someone else is already doing. I trust my clients’ knowledge and judgement to steer me towards what it is that they’re after in the brief, and that way I can create a design that is new and interesting, but is tailor-made to their needs as well.” In the twelve years since launching their company, Tim Heywood Designs, Heywood and his partner Vanessa Reville have that I’ve already learnt and produced, so my been quietly prolific producing a host of next design is my biggest achievement.” pioneering and award-winning designs. Yachts, such as Ice, whose brief demanded the project be driven by the need to be as ‘green’ as possible, from a diesel electric drive system to using filters with the lowest environmental impact, have pushed Heywood to reinvent and continually strive to be better. Heywood describes his design style as fluid and dynamic, and endeavours to create “beautiful shapes” that enable the yacht to glide effortlessly through water. With that said, it is the ship yard that is responsible for building a hull that guarantees perfect speed, stability, and hydrodynamics, and external designers take care of the interior design, “I’ve been told by other people that the so Heywood’s main point of focus is “the yachts I design, such as Pelorus, Carinthia outside part of the boat that you see above VII and Kogo, are influential in style, and the water line.” it’s always satisfying to get recognised with awards,” says Heywood. “But ultimately, I just set out to do the very best that I can, and I’m always most proud of my work in progress. The designs that are on my drawing board at this moment represent all Commonly termed ‘toys of the elite’, superyachts are beginning to live up to their reputation, says Heywood: “I deem the terms ‘super-yacht’ or ‘mega-yacht’ to be ironic, as to me a yacht is a yacht, but it’s 35 36 going to be considered ‘super’ by anyone who hasn’t got one! However, there is a major trend emerging for increasingly bigger yachts, and that isn’t necessarily because bigger is better, but because clients want their boats to incorporate even more facilities.” Compared to 20 years ago when the average size of a yacht was 50m, the super yachts of today are averaging 80m in length, and are kitted out with every new and exciting feature imaginable. Boasting on-board cinemas, millionaires recreational toys, hospitals and, in some instances, six to ten additional small boats, as well as, of course, numerous guest cabins with en suite bathrooms, the ‘today’s’ yachts are aweinspiring. And they’re set to get even more jaw dropping as a new wave of opulent wellness centres, spas, gyms and treatment rooms come into demand. But, according to Heywood, it’s not all as prestige-related or gratuitous as it may at first seem. “Most super-yacht owners have connections with the cinema world, whether they’re actors, invest in films, or rent their yachts out on set, so it makes sense for them to have a cinema, for example, on board,” he says. “And a facility, such as a helipad, which can be solely perceived as glamorous, is actually of great practical importance to an individual who lives in a ‘cash rich, time poor’ world.” Now working out of his East End London offices, Heywood admits he fell into yacht design by accident, having qualified in industrial design engineering, which focused on items produced for the mass market. But with a string of success stories from the yachting world under his belt, he rather modestly puts his accomplishments down to the confidence placed in him by his clients. 37 38 “The design of a yacht is important, but a good design is timeless,” says Heywood. “Therefore, at the point of conception, my primary concern is that the yacht performs its function, and that function is to keep the client happy, it’s a personal, bespoke project. If you commission a pair of handmade shoes, the reasoning behind it would be that they fit your feet exactly, the same applies to a yacht. That’s why I encourage plenty of client input right from the beginning, so that they enjoy the experience, and I have a clear understanding of what they want…and our rate of repeat business supports that point of view!” Anywhere in the World go is Everywhere we Private aviation is booming and being used increasingly for holidays as well as the more usual business dashes. I t is no wonder, therefore, that the underwater world has caught the attention of the luxury yacht industry and opened up a completely new market in small leisure submarines. Some of the world’s most significant yachts carry small submarines, and if designers get their way an increasing number will follow in the near future. These manned submersibles have an excellent safety record and are, surprisingly, statistically the safest form of transportation. This is due in large part to the rigorous classification requirements of the main classification societies and the fact that each year the submarines must be thoroughly inspected by a surveyor in order to maintain classification. Although the present number of submarines on super-yachts is still small, the demand is steadily growing. Too ridiculous to be true? Quite possibly, but that hasn’t stopped Joe Harmon from giving it a try. 58 When this all began back in July 2006 as Joe’s graduate school project, the brief was not to create a comic book hero’s dream vehicle. Nor was it even to build a car. Majoring in industrial design, Joe’s objective was to simply explore the many possibilities of using wood as a building material. A farmer’s son, born and educated in Cyprus, Andreas migrated to London with his family in 1963 where he took a job as a deliveryman for the then tiny Fleur de Lys Patisseries. “I started work as a driver,” says Andreas, “and after about three years with the company my first big break came. The owner put the business up for sale. I wanted it but did not have the money. Even so, we agreed a price of £2,500 and the deal was done. We didn’t even bother with a contract. Every Saturday I would send him an envelope with postal orders for £10, £20 or even £30 until he was paid in full. It took a little time to pay, but it got paid and we stayed the best of friends.” M.Y Alysia M.Y Lauren L Operating from a London basement, The yachts under the stewardship of Andreas had three people making cakes Andreas Liveras are subject to rigorous and one van, which he drove around standards and his commitment to every restaurants, particularly Italian restaurants, detail onboard is legendary. He knows all delivering their sweet creations including of his crewmembers personally and plays Danish pastry, croissant and apple strudel. a paternal role in guiding their activities The business expanded rapidly, moved to Newark, in Nottinghamshire, into a bigger factory, and within 3 years was employing 450 people. The company expanded its patisserie range and prepared the first Black Forest gateaux. By the time Andreas sold Fleur de Lys in 1985 to Express Dairies (a Grand Metropolitan subsidiary), for an eight-figure multi-million pound deal, he had turned it into one of the largest independent manufacturers of frozen gateaux in Europe. “I decided to retire and indulge in my growing passion for yachts,” says Andreas. “I bought my first large yacht, a 27m Benetti that we renamed Princess Natasha, after my first granddaughter.” Unfortunately, a life of waking up at five to be at the factory turning the ovens on, yet always still the last to leave, made Andreas restless in retirement. “I became fidgety and fed up. The yacht moored next to me was up for auction and so I thought, as I was there, I would have a look at it. I bought it, called it Princess Sophia after my niece, set about renovating and preparing it for charter, thus turning my hobby into a business.” The purchases and renovations of Rosenkavalier, Princess Tanya, Princess Lauren and Altair were projects that made waves in the charter arena and inspired greater ventures for the future. “I have always bought yachts well and sold them for more,” adds Andreas. “Also, I was always interested in the biggest boats because I to achieve a seamless operation. Andreas sold off his fleet of older yachts after the first of two new yachts was launched. The Liveras Yachts current fleet comprises the 85m M.Y. Alysia and the 90m, newly re-named, M.Y. Lauren L (formerly exConstellation), due to re-enter the charter market in May 2008 after some very exciting improvements. “Every time that it is possible I will meet my charter guests when they arrive and leave,” says Andreas. “I hear from them how the charter went which is very important. I even bought myself a small plane to enable me to visit yachts when they were separated and I had to see the guests on the same day.” Andreas truly enjoys his work. “I thought it was a mistake to retire for the first time. I really see no reason for a man to retire when he is happy at his work. I love the sea, I love my yachts, I love my Monaco office and I love meeting people. Without these I would be lost.” There is no doubt that Andreas remains focused on Liveras Yachts providing the most luxurious charter yachts in the world. They are now preparing for the construction of 2 x 108 metre superyachts to be delivered in 2011. He adds “I feel and believe that this industry has a long way to go and as long as safety, luxury and top service is provided, we will always lead the way,” and with such a charismatic, visionary approach, Liveras Yachts are sure to surpass all expectations both now and in the future. knew the biggest were always the busiest For more information visit boats in the industry.” www.fraseryachts.com 63 A Precious 64 Large displacement yachts are fully capable of making open sea crossings on their own, but in the super-yacht world it is not always prudent to do so. C argo Indeed T here are a number of considerations to bear in mind before your floating palace is ready for that transatlantic crossing. Also, in the hectic world of the super-yacht owner, it is unlikely he or she will see the time spent in making the crossing as ‘time well spent’. So you are faced with an ownerless voyage, still needing a full crew, the possibility of foul weather, plus an arrival time that is hard to predict, causing conflict with your all important charter commitments. There are also a number of purely economic considerations to take into account. There is the crew cost, fuel is expensive, extra engine hours mean more maintenance and the risk of poor weather affecting the yacht exterior and indeed interior. Not really something the average owner worries about when their vessel is cruising in the Caribbean or Med. So what is the alternative? The answer is Dockwise Yacht Transport (DYT). A group company of Dockwise Ltd, the global leader in the maritime transport of heavy cargo, DYT is proud to lead the world in large yacht transport through its own fleet of semi-submersible yacht carriers. Their fleet can handle yachts of any size and the method used to move the yachts is unique. Whereas other companies use cranes to lift yachts on deck for transport, DYT use a float-on/floatoff method. All of their vessels offer this facility so that the loading and unloading process is extremely gradual, with little to no risk 65 of damage to the yacht. “It’s an amazing process,” says Captain Phil Alloway, who has trusted his command, the 136ft custom motor yacht Adler and its predecessor of the same name, to over 35 voyages with DYT. Based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Dockwise Yacht Transport has four yacht carriers, permanently providing a fixed route service across the Atlantic, as well as routes from Florida to Vancouver via Costa Rica, and Mexico (through the Panama Canal), the South Pacific (Australia and New Zealand), and a Caribbean shuttle from New England (Newport, Rhode Island) to the Caribbean islands. Three of their vessels are converted heavylift cargo vessels. Accompanying crew members sleep on board their respective yachts which are provided with running water and electricity. The fourth carrier and latest addition to the fleet, Yacht Express, was built specifically to transport yachts and is fully equipped with a host of amenities for the yachts and their crews including an atrium, swimming pool, conference and media room, fitness facilities and stateroom cabins for overnight accommodation. DYT President, Clemens van der 66 Werf, proudly comments, “Yacht Express is more than 130ft longer than our other largest carrier. She will not only accommodate more yachts on regularly scheduled trips to and from Florida and the Mediterranean but, with a service speed of 18 knots, deliver them faster, cutting a transatlantic voyage time by nearly 50% from 15 to 8 days.” At sea, on all four vessels, the yachts are protected by side walls known as ‘spray covers’. Transportation prices are for a complete service. They are based on the square footage area of the yacht, the distance and a fixed rate, but include everything: insurance, loading and unloading, cradling, customs, etc. DYT’s global service was further enhanced when, on October 26th 2007, it announced a cooperative partnership with BBC Chartering & Logistic. BBC operates T more than 140 vessels worldwide and this strategic alliance offers DYT clients an he yacht industry has experienced a period of sturdy growth during the past few years and looks set to continue to expand over the coming years. New routes have already been announced to Dubai(UAE), Southampton (UK) and Aarhus (Denmark). Says Clemens, “With BBC’s ships added to the mix of DYT’S own fleet of four semi-submersibles, it is now possible for customers to choose from more ports of call in regions that before were either inaccessible or not serviced directly by DYT.” The yacht industry has experienced a period of sturdy growth during the past few years and looks set to continue to expand over the coming years. It is no surprise, therefore, that the number of yacht owners and yacht builders wishing to reposition or deliver vessels around the world is growing. Dockwise Yacht Transport has responded to this demand with a clear commitment to offering a safe and reliable marina to marina service worldwide. Adds Clemens, “DYT is constantly studying the migration habits and migration volumes of both power and sailing yachts of all sizes and we will continue to add new destinations to our regular stops to enhance owners’ and captains’ cruising options worldwide.” For further information visit www.yacht-transport.com 67 Impulse For Sale IMPULSE invites you to experience one of the finest interiors, engineering and craftmanship one can find in a luxury yacht. Despite dealing with high profile clients who negotiate the prying lens of the Paparazzi on a daily basis, the aim of a maritime security officer is to be fully prepped, keenly alert, and to always “come in under the radar.” As founder of Slavin Security Consultants, Martyn Slavin prides himself on providing just such a service, and one that is not so easy to come by. With a real shortage of fully trained security personnel in the industry, by the time most super-yacht owners hire Slavin Security they already have at least one bad experience under their sea-faring belts. “Too many security companies, which don’t have the necessary experience or trained staff, perceive maritime security to be glamorous,” says Martyn, “and take on jobs purely for a reputable client list. But the real work takes place behind the scenes, away from the inquisitive eyes of the public, and an inexperienced crew can pose real safety risks for their client. When you’re onboard a yacht it’s more about being safe than being high profile.” Despite dealing with high profile clients who negotiate the prying lens of the Paparazzi on a daily basis, the aim of a maritime security officer is to be fully prepped, keenly alert, and to always “come in under the radar.” 71 Having served 18 years in the military either. That’s a really difficult question to answer, because everywhere at some point seems a dream destination – if you stay in one place long enough, eventually you yearn to be elsewhere. But, if I had to pick one place, I’d say the Turks & Caicos Islands in the Bahamas. It has one of the longest coral reefs in the world, which makes it great for diving. What would you choose for your last supper, where and with whom? On board, what do you consider your personal necessity/luxury? Do you have an unfulfilled dream, and what is it? For me, with a family at home, it has to be our on board high-speed Internet access with a web cam, which enables me to speak to, and see them, every night, unless I’m in the middle of the ocean. Things have really come a long way in a short period of time, and the WIFI access we have on board Janie is a far cry from the prohibitively expensive SatCom we used to work with. My last supper would be with my wife and two daughters in the Turks & Caicos Islands, and it would consist of cracked conch and grouper fingers – two of my favourite specialities! Early retirement! What is your biggest regret and finest achievement? My biggest regret is not being at home more for my family. The length of time that I’m away varies greatly, but I’m currently on a threemonth stretch without seeing them, so it can get tough. My finest achievement would have to be becoming a father, twice! Janie is currently available for charter through Fraser Yachts. For further information on charter rates and availability, please contact your nearest charter office.
