CHAIRMAN’S
MESSAGE
Dear Colleagues,
This issue marks the closing of an
eventful year and the beginning
of a new one with new aspirations
and goals that we have set out for
our organisation and ourselves.
Our hard work over the last few
years are now showing results
as the Group begins to deliver
improved financial performance.
Both our Distribution and Drilling
subsidiaries have done well
this year.
Our Distribution subsidiary has been successful in
expanding its footprints in the Asia Pacific region. Our
increased focus on projects has delivered a healthy
order book.
In Indonesia, increased exploration and development
activities in the country have kept our Drilling subsidiary
busy. In November this year, we celebrated the
launching of the KS Java Star and this rig is now on its
way to commence work in the Madura fields.
This is only a first step for us. As activities in the oil and
gas industry continue to pick up speed in Indonesia,
there are abundant opportunities for both our Drilling
and Distribution subsidiaries. Our ready network in
the country will help facilitate our entry into this fast
growing market. Looking into 2013, I expect it to be an exciting year
for us. Organisationally, while we are operating
more efficiently, there will always be more room for
improvement.
On the business front, we have to look for more
opportunities and I foresee that many of these will come
from Asia. To achieve our vision to become a leader in
our industry, teamwork and cooperation among team
members are extremely important. Having undergone
the changes over the last few years, we are now more
streamlined and focused. I hope the teams locally and
regionally will work closely together and foster the
camaraderie that will make us an organisation of choice
for everyone. As we enter into the festive seasons, I take this
opportunity to wish all of you a Happy and Successful
2013 and Gong Xi Fa Cai to all our colleagues who are
celebrating the Lunar New Year. May the New Year
bring good health, abundance and happiness to you
and your family.

SSH’s Inaugural
HOD Workshop 2012
SSH initiated the inaugural
HOD Workshop 2012 held
at the Orchid Country Club
on 12 October 2012.
Facilitated by Simon Ng
from the HR-Learning
& Development (L&D) Department, the
workshop started with TEAM building
activities and culminated with a ‘Gangnam’
dance by the HODs.
Richard Wiluan attended the workshop and
provided the team with valuable strategies
to move forward.
Drawing key principles from Sun Tzu Art of War
for business and learning values from Toyota,
General Motors and IKEA, the HODs rolled up
their sleeves and were in the thick of actions.
They analysed the strength, weaknesses and
threats in the macro business environment
and mapped out the opportunities and
prioritisation. The workshop ended with a
presentation on the action plans to move
the organisation forward.
Article by Simon Ng
The team wrapped up the workshop
amassing lots of energy and enthusiasm and
were eagerly looking forward to implement
the action plans.
CK says:
This workshop is an important
event in our strategic thrust to
grow the organisation.
In a fast-paced business
environment, I re-emphasize
again that we need to
‘re-sharpened our axe’ in our
endeavour to ‘cut the right tree’
with speed and accuracy. This will require business units to
align with organisational goals;
constantly identify strengths
& weaknesses, business
opportunities & threats; build
consensus and implement the
action plans. The workshop has
achieved the objectives.
CK Eng joined the 2nd half of the workshop
despite his busy schedule and provided
valuable insights and addressed ideas raised
in the group discussion. I look forward to more of such
workshop being conducted at
unit level.

This was also the first OSEA 2012 that featured
KS Distribution as an integrated company
and the KS Distribution booth had featured
32 principals via product displays and
posters, making the booth one of the most
comprehensive in the show. The 19th International Oil and Gas Industry
Exhibition and Conference

The four days exhibition brought the sales
personnel from various entities closer
together as they experienced many areas of
cooperation during the exhibition including
introduction of customers to various products
from the various entities. The team leaders of
the show, who were the various MDs of the
exhibiting entities, ensured that everyone
represented the company well.
The night of 29th November 2012 was also a
special one to remember as KS Distribution
held a special networking night at Harry’s
Bar (Marina Bay Link Mall), on the sidelines of
OSEA 2012, to invite all our valued customers,
principals and partners to network with our
sales personnel and management. This
networking night was attended by a total
of 208 personnel.
After the conclusion of OSEA 2012, positive
outcomes have been reported including
immediate sales closed for products
on display and some 94 potential leads
generated as well as encouraging examples
of various entities working together. More
than 500 visitors were recorded to have
visited the booth.
We would like to
thank the OSEA

CHARACTER MATTERS
Who Am I?
Article by an anonymous person
A young woman went to her mother and told
her about her life and how things were so hard
for her. She did not know how she was going
to make it and wanted to give up. She was
tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as
one problem was solved a new one arose.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled
three pots with water and placed each on a high
fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In the first, she
placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs,
and the last she placed tea leaves. She let them
sit and boil, without saying a word. In about
twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She
fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl.
She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a
bowl. Then she ladled the tea out and placed
it in a bowl.
they were soft. She then asked her to take an
egg and break it. After pulling off the shell,
she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, she
asked her to sip the tea. The daughter smiled,
as she tasted its wonderful flavor. The daughter
then asked. “What does it mean, Mother?”
Her mother explained that each of these objects
had faced the same adversity boiling water
but each reacted differently. The carrot went
in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after
being subjected to the boiling water, it softened
and became weak. The egg had been fragile.
Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid
interior. But, after sitting through the boiling
water, its inside became hardened. The tea leaves
were unique, however. After they were in the
boiling water, they had changed the water.
Turning to her daughter, she asked, “Tell me,
what you see?” ”Carrots, eggs, and tea,” she
replied. She brought her closer and asked
her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that
“Which are you?” she asked her daughter. “When
adversity knocks on your door, how do you
respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or tea leaves?
“Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that
4
seems strong, but with pain and adversity,
do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?
Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart,
but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid
spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial
hardship or some other trial, have I become
hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same,
but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a
stiff spirit and hardened heart?
Or am I like the tea leaves? The leaves actually
change the hot water, the very circumstance
that brings the pain. When the water gets hot,
it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like
the tea leaves, when things are at their worst,
you get better and change the situation around
you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are
their greatest do you elevate to another level?
How do you handle adversity?
Are you a carrot, an egg, or tea leaves?

allowing these children to attend schools.
As the Deputy Managing Director for SSH
Corporation, he adopts a “Management by
Walking Around” style in order for him to
interact with the employees more often to
find out their concerns and suggestions.
He quipped, “In most instances, I would call
myself a democratic manager. I try to draw on
people’s knowledge and skills, create a group
commitment to the resulting goals in order to
tap the collective wisdom of the group.”
His work experiences in China and Thailand
have taught him valuable lessons and insights.
Having exposed to managing different
cultures, he believes that anyone who tries to
be the best that he can be is the type of person
he can work with most effectively.
Terence Lim is representative of his generation

back to East Coast before completing the loop
at Changi Village covering a total distance of
about 80km. Sometimes, I would cycle on
my own in Mandai area using a shorter route.”
Asked about how he starts his day, he quipped
“For working days, I will usually wake up early
in the morning and walk my 2 dogs, have
breakfast and read the morning newspaper. “
Terence is proud to share with us that KS
Energy Group co-sponsored The Tour Of
Hope 2012 and sincerely thank the group for
supporting the good cause. In November 2012,
working with the WorldVision Foundation of
Thailand, Terence with a group of likeminded
friends from all over the world completed a
750km Charity Cycling Tour from Bangkok to
Phuket. The sponsorship was used to build
a library and community centre at the Ban
Tubjark School in Ranong Province North of
Phuket. The library and community centre will
benefit 2,000 children and adults living there.
A family man who makes it a point to have
dinner at home, he explained, “If possible,
I will try to squeeze in a run before dinner and
spend quality time with my 3 sons- Ashton
(4.5 years old), Aidan (2.5 years old) and Asher
(1 year old) after dinner”. Every Saturday,
Terence makes a point to catch up with his wife
over lunch by leaving his kids with the in-laws.
Terence’s love for sports started him playing
rugby at 16 till his 30s. With age, he does less
impact sports now and cycling is his new
found passion. He said, “On most weekend,

On how Terence sees the company grow, he
quoted Abraham Lincoln’s “Always bear in
mind that your own resolution to succeed is
more important than any other.” He believes
that growth is a pre-requisite for business
success. We need to expand market share, seek
out related and new market opportunities,
and constantly pursue new customers. To
grow successfully, we need to build upon
our success with current customer and grow
outward from there.
On his aspirations, Terence strives to be the best
that he can be. He hopes to provide sufficiently
for his children and cultivate thoughtfulness
in them and to have their own aspirations.
“Life is a journey and not a destination”
he added.

MY TRAVEL NOTES
On a Backpack Trail to
Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China
This travel tale was written by pen book – Lawson Wang
caretaker teams responsible for the national
state administration of gardens and cultural
heritage. The implementing protection
measures in compliance with national
standards for the protection of world heritage
sites in the Master Plan for the West Lake Scenic
Area which include the 9 special plans of the
municipal authority to take care ranging
from transportation in West Lake Scenic Area;
Westward Expansion of West Lake; Protection of the Beishan Historic and Cultural Street;
Control over the Lingyin Scenic Area; and the
Construction of the New Socialist Countryside
in Hangzhou West Lake Scenic Area bear much
of a wonder – if you don’t believe me wait
till nature calls and you have to rush for a
toilet, you would be amazed by the number of
dos and don’ts regulation paste on every
available walls.
One morning last January, I woke up to find
myself in this little Flower Inn-China Westlake
Hotel at Westlake District of Hangzhou, China.
I thought for a moment that I was in the
Twilight Zone. In a moment of confusion I then
realised that I was indeed on a backpack trail
to this fairyland both ancient and modernised
world of it owns.
Hangzhou, Zheijiang is located on the northern
bank of the Qiantang River southern end of
the Grand Canal and is approximately 177km
south-west of Shanghai. The journey from
Shanghai to Hangzhou is about 2 hours
45 minutes by public transport that is if you
don’t mind the bumpy, scary and heartshattering experience. “All the bus drivers
here are ex-Formula One racers” the bus driver
confessed – well for the budget which my wife
approved I have no complaint.
Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province a
well-known tourist, historical and cultural city,
one of the six ancient capitals in China. As a
famous scenic city in China, it attracts more
than 20 million domestic and foreign tourists
every year. Marco Polo said of Hangzhou as
the finest and most luxurious city in the world.
You can view much of the old China from the
West Lake Scenic Area which contains over
60 cultural relic sites and several attractions
of natural beauty and over the hills is a total
contrast - busting cosmopolitan city spread
over by buildings, traffic congestion, people
confusion, and the noise level is certainly
unbearable. A cruise on the lake is a good
option to view several sites and for those
who love to drink tea and enjoy a moment of
tranquillity this is the place you must come
to visit.
I took a boat ride in the West Lake and guest
what I was told, the same boat man said that his
ancestors-ancestors were all boat men before
and they had used the same designed boats
to ferry many inspired famous poets, scholars
and artists who had wrote, painted and crafted
their thoughts, inspiration and admiration of
the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou
but felt short to add that emperor too had
visited the great lake in between 9th to 16th
centuries. For a few dollars, to let him earned
his due and listen to his made believed story
tale, is certainly worth the entertainment. The
West Lake and hills surrounding its three sides
stood numerous temples, pagodas, pavilions,
gardens and ornamental trees, as well as
causeways and artificial islands. The design,
landscape and construction elements bore
many influences of the Chinese, Japanese
and Korean traditions and cultures, a series
of vistas reflecting an idealised fusion and
balance between humans and nature.
I was told that although they love the tourists’
dollars and welcome foreigners with open
arms but the worry and fear of losing their
cultural heritage is entrenched deep inside
them. They reiterated the need to strengthen
the community management system, local
education and to connect the interests of
stakeholders in ensuring a balance approach
between nature digression and economic
benefits. The large number of visitors come
every year has compounded their growing
concerns, vulnerability and impact on
the authenticity of the site need a high
priority in relation to the overall management
that should not rely solely on laws and
regulations alone.
Back to the hotel reality kicks into my senses
and before I could sit back to relax and pamper
over a well spread 15-dish dinner, it is also time
to backpack my belongings and head for home
the next morning after a 2-day of wondering
into this little Shanghai-La of Hangzhou.
The cultural landscape of the West Lake displays
the great clarity of Chinese aesthetics of the
Tang and Song Dynasties, and it demonstrates
a profound impact of harmony and beauty not
only in China but also “mankind appreciation
and preservation of nature” as inscribed by the
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization) on 24th June 2011.
It is not surprising to note that the entire and
surrounding properties are well and over
protected at both national and provincial
level of laws and regulations from anything-toeverything to ensure the site would continue
to survive and preserve for another 1,000 years.
There are a total of 6 laws and regulations,
3 national and provincial management and

The answer to “Guess the Fruit” is:
BlackBerry Bush
Blackberry bushes are those plants bearing an edible fruit
produced by Rubus fruticosus, or any of several hybrids between
that species and others of the Rubus genus in the Rosaceae
family. The history of these plants has been traced to some of
the ancient cultures and civilizations. Blackberries are high in
antioxidants, vitamins, dietary fiber, and folic acid and it is said
that the fruits were used by the ancient Romans and Greeks for
medicinal as well as culinary purposes. They are mostly found
as wild plants, but in some regions these shrubs are cultivated.
Blackberries can be either consumed while fresh or processed
for jellies, jams, preserves, wine, and pies.
