Spawning grounds associated with submarine canyons between Guafo and Guamblin islands (offshore zone) have been identified in technical reports on stock assessments. Further, detections of early-life stages in the inner Sea of North Chilean Patagonia show that spawning also occurs there. However, no information is available on whether this results from individuals migrating between inshore and offshore spawning grounds or from distinct resident subpopulations. Morphometric differences in eggs have been highlighted, eggs from the outer sea being larger. The size of the spawning fraction as well as female fatty acid contents also exhibited marked differences between the two areas, supporting the hypothesis of a subpopulation residing in inner waters and spawning in channels and fjords. This project aims to test for the hypothesis of the existence of sub-populations of M. australis which spawn simultaneously during winter. The methodology includes 1) a review of the data from technical reports, 2) the identification of gaps in knowledge regarding the life cycle of the southern hake, 3) the filling of these gaps or collection of similar information on species of the same genus in order to, 4) implement an individual based model for the southern hake to assess the connectivity of the early life stages in the North Chilean Patagonia.
