A 12-week program designed to
help you get motivated about exercise,
healthy eating and other lifestyle changes
that will lead to better joint health.
PHYSICAL THERAPY
NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT
You will be evaluated by a
licensed physical therapist,
who will then develop your
personalized treatment
plan. Based on the results of
your evaluation, goals will
be established to address
your strength, range of motion and functional mobility.
As you progress through the program, your goals will
be changed to reflect your improvement. You will also
learn how to adapt these goals to maintain a healthier
and more active lifestyle that promotes improved joint
health post-surgically.
As part of your Joints in
Motion Program you will meet
with a registered dietitian
to discuss healthy eating
habits and potential dietary
modifications to achieve or
maintain a healthy weight
for joint health. The dietitian will determine your
recommended daily calories, work with you to create a
healthy eating plan, and help set measurable goals to
achieve a healthy lifestyle.
WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
SEMINAR
AQUATIC THERAPY
As a medium for exercise,
water provides several
benefits to the patient:
• Buoyancy, which is the power to float or rise in water,
reduces the amount of compressive force on the joints.
This allows you to move and exercise without as much
pain in the joints.
• Constant resistance provided by the water helps
to strengthen all the muscles around the joint and
requires long-neglected muscles to function more
normally in order to move your limbs through the
water. Increased strength in your limbs promotes
improved post-surgical outcomes.
• Heat from the warm water helps to relax muscles that
have been in spasm due to pain. Once the muscles are
relaxed, they can move through a more normal range
and function as intended.
The pool that will be used is located at the YMCA at 935
10th Avenue in Huntington. Therapy will take place in
water that ranges in depth from 48 to 56 inches.
Our bariatric surgery
team offers free monthly
seminars to help you learn
about your surgical weight-loss options. You will have
an opportunity to meet the surgeon, identify possible
surgical weight loss options, and ask questions.
Attending this informational seminar will provide you
with options and resources, but no commitment is
required. To determine if you may be a candidate, and
to register to attend, you may call the bariatric intake
coordinator at 304.399.4118.
EXERCISE CLASSES
Exercise can help people
lose excessive weight,
restore strength, agility
and endurance, improve
coordination and balance
and increase range of
motion. A variety of classes
will be offered throughout
the program to ensure diverse opportunities to meet
your personal needs.
SeniorWise Cardio & Strength
Combine fun with fitness to increase your
cardiovascular and muscular endurance power
with a standing circuit style workout. Upper-body
strength work with
hand-held weights,
elastic tubing
with handles, and
a balance ball is
alternated with nonimpact cardio. Chairs
are available for assisted strength work. Class ends
with stretching and relaxation exercises.
SeniorWise Yoga
This 55-minute yoga class focuses on the needs
of active older adults and beginners with gentle
stretching, slower
movements and
breathing basics.
This class includes
moving from the
floor to standing
positions. Please
bring your own mat.
