CAN WE JUST START BY
SAYING ...
A huge thanks to over 180 musicians (we counted!) for
participating in our 2nd annual Brit Jazz Fest fortnight in
August. It was great to see full houses every night for a
varied, and at points challenging programme which reflected
the wealth and diversity of jazz talent in this country. We
hope you were able to check out some of it for yourself.
A special mention to ‘Brit Jazz Radio’, our inaugural radio
station effort which really heightened the festival buzz. It was
broadcast on FM and online over the two weeks and now
continues 24/7 online. Listen in at www.ronniescotts.co.uk.
Special guest presenters, live shows, interviews, latest news
and the best of recorded jazz ... Nice.
September starts with a trio of top vocalists Terry Reid, Liane
Carroll and Mica Paris. Other highlights - a week’s run for
premier Scottish soul/funksters Average White Band (already
sold out, sorry), US hip-hop influenced Hypnotic Brass and
effortlessly cool vocalist Jose James, plus Nigel Kennedy
leading a very special gig to celebrate Jimi Hendrix’s last ever
performance on stage at Ronnie Scott’s precisely 40 years ago.
Following this, a night to commemorate the recent and tragic
passing of our beloved house drummer, Chris Dagley.
Taking us into October, Grammy Award-Winning guitarist/
singer Jose Feliciano plays 4 nights, plus return trips for Gilad
Atzmon celebrating 10 years of the Orient House, Snowboy,
Clare Teal, Manu Dibango , Carmen Lundy, Ernie Watts, Stacey
Kent and Brian Auger. Club debuts also for Irish folk jazz singer
Mary Coughlan and funk pioneer Lonnie Liston Smith, plus cult
blues figure Joe Louis Walker drops in for 2 nights.
It just remains to remind you to check out our Late Late shows
if you haven’t already (Every Monday-Thursday from 11pm
until, well, late) - plus the melting pot that is our Wednesday
upstairs Jazz Jam is relishing its new lease of life under
young trumpeter Andy Davies... tell your muso mates to come
down and have a blow.
And for the festive cynics amongst you, you’ll be relieved to
hear we don’t have space to tell you about our Christmas
season ... yet. That’ll come in the next brochure. What a relief!

SEPTEMBER ARTISTS
WED 1ST: (£20 - £37.50)
Terry Reid
‘There are only 3 things happening
in England: The Beatles, The Rolling
Stones and Terry Reid..’ (Aretha
Franklin). After famously turning
down the job as vocalist for Led
Zeppelin, Terry went on to recommend
both Robert Plant and John Bonham
to Jimmy Page for their jobs. Terry
Reid is the musician’s musician
with the voice that has lost none of
its power - still singing, still playing,
still writing songs. ‘The most soulful
British vocalist ever...’(The Independent).
FRI 3RD - SAT 4TH: (£20 - £41.50)
Mica Paris
A welcome return for the British
soul legend who is regarded as
the one of finest singers of her
generation. Seeing a performer
like this in such close proximity
is exactly what Ronnie’s is all
about, and you can pretty much
guarantee that you will be
humming a few numbers from
the night as well as clicking
your fingers for weeks to come.
THURS 2ND: (£15 - £27.50)
Liane Carroll
Having been something of a stalwart of the British jazz scene
for many years, Liane has in the last few years gone on to

released a new duo album featuring the acclaimed Scottish jazz
pianist Brian Kellock. Appearing here with her beloved trio: her

MON 6TH - SAT 11TH: (£20 - £37.50, fri/sat early £30 - £47.50)
Average White Band
Average White Band have enjoyed a forty-plus year career as
one of the world’s premier funk and soul acts. Hailing from the
unlikely funk stronghold of Scotland, they produced a string of
hit songs that includes Pick Up The Pieces, Cut The Cake and
Schoolboy Crush, and have ensured a lasting longevity with a
younger, more modern audience who have been drawn to their
infectious grooves through samples of their music on tracks by
the likes of De La Soul, Janet Jackson and Ice Cube.
MON 13TH - TUES 14TH: (£15 - £31.50)
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
One of several recent groups who combine the traditions of the
New Orleans brass band with more contemporary sounds such
as ska and hip-hop, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are one of
the most convincing. The band comprises eight brothers with
a strong pedigree already in place in the shape of their father,
Sun Ra trumpeter Phil Cohran. Having supported Blur in Hyde
Park in summer 2009, the Chicagoans are well versed in
entertaining London crowds but their Ronnie’s gigs will see
their livewire performances compressed and focused in a much
more intimate and engaging setting - not to be missed!
WED 15TH - THURS 16TH: (£20 - £37.50)
SUN 12TH: (£15 - £27.50)
Soul Family
Sunday
The Soul Family sessions have been a staple part of the
Ronnie’s calendar for a long time, giving audiences a regular
opportunity to sample Natalie Williams’ incredible vocals and
nicely diverse choice of guest artists, covering soul, jazz,
funk, pop and more - this month’s special guest is the hotly
tipped singer/one man band: Jarle bernhoft.

Jose James
One of the artists credited with bringing jazz sensibilities to a
wider audience without running the risk of ‘dumbing down’, José
James has managed to combine elements of the music with
soul, hip-hop and R&B to sensuous and sophisticated effect. His
2008 debut album The Dreamer, released through Gilles
Peterson’s Brownswood label, revealed an innate musical
sensitivity and showcased his effortlessly cool vocals, backed by
a simple but highly effective piano trio. His return to Ronnie’s is
a treat for audiences from across the musical spectrum.

JTQ
Famed for their upbeat, energetic
live shows, British jazz-funk
stalwarts JTQ, the James Taylor
Quartet, return to Ronnie Scott’s.
Taylor’s driving Hammond
organ has been leading the
group for over 20 years and
they show no signs of slowing
down. Their relentlessly entertaining
tunes take their inspiration from
the rare-groove style funk and
boogaloo funk of the sixties and
seventies, and they are without
a doubt one of the most important
jazz-pop crossover bands in
British musical history.
