The theme for the past 12 months at the club has been upgrading. We have an enormous number of people come to the club and bar each TUES 1ST - WED 2ND: THUR 3RD - SAT 5TH: SUN 6TH: SUN 6TH LUNCH JAZZ: MON 7TH - TUES 8TH: WED 9TH - THUR 10TH: FRI 11TH - SAT 12TH: SUN 13TH: SUN 13TH LUNCH JAZZ: MON 14TH - TUES 15TH: week and of course the old place takes a bit of a battering. In the past year we have upgraded the sound desk situation, all the bathrooms, much of the back house, the kitchen floor, walls and some of the kit, replaced the club table bases for extra comfort and have installed cameras and built an AV studio. Busy, and costly, times. To be frank it’s a bit of a Forth Bridge this place. It’s often easy to consider Ronnie Scott’s as just the club and the headliner playing therein, when in fact there is a whole lot more going on. The Bar upstairs is a venue in its own right with separate promoter nights bringing all sorts of jazz based music each evening. The Wednesday jam, for instance, has been running almost 5 years now and is as packed as ever. Downstairs the Late Late Shows have been getting extremely busy, with Thursdays particularly getting so full we are finding the place is full at 1am with a queue outside! And then there’s the Big Band and All Stars getting bookings around the world and the weekly radio show - now presented by Ian Shaw - broadcast on Jazz FM, and in Toronto too. Maybe this year’s theme should be world domination. Highlights of the early 2013? Well we have a few new artists to the club in Eumir Deodato - remember “Also Sprach Zarathustra (aka Theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey)”? Plus pop percussionist Manu Katché and Brazilian superstar Milton Nascimento. And at the tail end of February a very long awaited return of Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. Pedal Steel Guitar fans will love Robert Randolph on Feb 15th. Simon Cooke MD, Ronnie Scott’s A word to the wise, Kurt Elling in April is shifting at a rate of knots. facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 02 WED 16TH - SAT 19TH: SUN 20TH: SUN 20TH LUNCH JAZZ: MON 21ST - WED 23RD: THUR 24TH: FRI 25TH - SAT 26TH: SUN 27TH: SUN 27TH LUNCH JAZZ: MON 28TH - WED 30TH: THURS 31ST: NATIONAL YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA SARAH JANE MORRIS RONNIE SCOTT’S JAZZ ORCHESTRA PRESENTS... Featuring two vocalists and 22 band members, NYJO is a powerful celebration of the jazz orchestra sound from a band of under 25 year olds, many of whom are destined to become the next UK jazz generation. Much of NYJO's music is written specially for the orchestra by British composers, including past and present members of NYJO. RONNIE SCOTT’S JAZZ ORCHESTRA Presents… The Story So Far Led by award-winning saxophonist and band-leader Pete Long, the RSJO is one of the UK's finest Big Bands and features the cream of UK talent. This month featuring the music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, The Rat Pack and Benny Goodman. MON 7TH - TUES 8TH: SARAH JANE MORRIS Revered, sensual singer-songwriter Sarah Jane Morris, straddles rock, blues, jazz and soul with a goose-bump raising four octave range that rumbles from the heels of her size eight shoes to the tips of her flame-red mane. Famed for her association with the Communards in the mid-80s and infamous for a banned rendition of the classic Me and Mrs Jones, Sarah Jane Morris has always attracted as much attention for her politics as for her soul-driven, seismic voice. Ten solo albums later, pop stardom on the continent, and a diverse set of musical collaborations on record, film and stage, Morris continues to steer her unorthodox career to greater heights. Expect old faves alongside new material from her recent “Where It Hurts” album. facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 04 (Doors 6.00pm / £30.00 - £42.50) CARLEEN ANDERSON THUR 3RD - SAT 5TH: (Doors 6pm (& 10.30pm fri/sat) / £25.00 - £45.00) Sarah Jane Morris (voc), Henry Thomas (bs), Dominic Miller (gtr), Tony Remy (gtr), Martyn Barker (drs), Alistair Gavin (pno), plus special guests John Eacott (tpt), Annie Whitehead (tb), Michael Rosen (sax). (Doors 6.30pm / £25.00 -£40.00) Blessed with a uniquely soulful voice, soul singer Anderson found early fame with the hit single ‘Apparently Nothin’ with the cult band Young Disciples and has since gone on to great things as a popular and highly rated soul/jazz vocalist, both as a solo artist and in the company of acts such as The Brand New Heavies, Paul Weller, Bryan Ferry and Courtney Pine. She also just happens to be James Brown’s goddaughter and the daughter of his legendary vocalist Vicki Anderson. SUN 6TH LUNCH: (Doors 12 noon - 4pm / £15.00 - £18.00) LEE GIBSON ‘The Glory Of Gershwin’ One of UK finest interpreter of this classic material and influenced early in her singing career by the likes of Sarah Vaughan, Lee knows how to swing a band. She is accompanied by the John Horler Trio plus featured saxophonist Jamie Talbot. ronniescotts.co.uk / tel: 02074390747 PAGE 05 January (cont) SUN 13TH: (Doors 6.30pm / £20.00 - £28.50) NATALIE WILLIAMS SOUL FAMILY WED 9TH - THURS 10TH: (Doors 6pm / £20.00 - £35.00) LARRY GOLDINGS, PETER BERNSTEIN, BILL STEWART TRIO Storming trio featuring the classic Hammond B3, guitar and drums format that drove the soul jazz boom of the 60s. With renowned Hammond maestro Larry Goldings as at home in funk and pop as jazz and a hugely in demand sideman and virtuoso performer, top class drummer Stewart and world-class guitarist Bernstein who has played with the likes of Dr Lonnie Smith, Joshua Redman and Diana Krall. FRI 11TH - SAT 12TH: (Doors 6pm & 10.30pm / £25.00 - £45.00) NICOLA CONTE COMBO Nicola Conte (gtr), Bridgette Amofah (voc), Pietro Lussu (pno), Paolo Benedettini (bs), Teppo Mäkynen (drs), Francesco Lento (tpt), Gaetano Partipilo (sax). A very welcome return for Italian DJ, producer, guitarist and band leader, Nicola Conte whose shows last February were a highlight! Expect sharp-suited retro jazz with a Bossa Nova flavour and funky edge from Conte, who is renowned for introducing an innovative, uniquely Italian style of acid jazz that incorporates Bossa Nova themes, melodies drawn from Italian film scores of the 1960s, easy listening themes and beyond. Italian DJ and producer Nicola Conte became famous with his loungey brand of jazz that relies extensively on bossa nova, but is also heavily influenced by the swinging soundtracks of Italian films in the '60s and '70s, plus touches of ethnic music and kitsch. facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 06 Hosted by charismatic singer Williams, Soul Family Sunday is a monthly event presenting a host of top-notch guests from the world of UK R&B, soul and jazz. Blessed with a huge range, Williams moves effortlessly between heart-rending ballads, funky originals and deft swing and she has been joined by guests ranging from Beth Rowley and Gwyneth Herbert to Roachford, Jamie Cullum and Omar. MON 14TH - TUES 15TH: (Doors 6pm / £25.00 - £40.00) ERIC ALEXANDER & VINCENT HERRING QUINTET FEAT HAROLD MABERN “IN THE SPIRIT OF COLTRANE & CANNONBALL” Vincent Herring (alt sax), Eric Alexander (ten sax), Harold Mabern (pno), Milan Nikolic (bs), Joris Dudli (drs). Top class straight-ahead jazz as two of the most powerful mainstream saxophonists around, Eric Alexander and Vincent Herring, bring the spirit of the saxophone battle to Ronnies. There is a long tradition of such battles in jazz with the likes of Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray or Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane performing together in a gentleman's contest for who is the better player. This show is inspired by the 1959 album “Cannonball Adderley Quintet” in Chicago where altoist Adderley goes head-to-head with Coltrane. Expect top class hard bop and burning soul jazz in the great tradition all propelled by a fine band featuring legendary pianist Mabern who played with the likes of Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard and Hank Mobley. SUN 13TH LUNCH: (Doors 12 noon - 4pm / £16.00 - £20.00) JIVE ACES Jump, Jive and Wail’ from top ‘yellow-suited’ swing combo originally from Romford, Essex who captured the public’s attention this year in the semifinals of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ with their spirited version of ‘Bare Necessities’ from the Disney film ‘The Jungle Book’. ronniescotts.co.uk / tel: 02074390747 PAGE 07 January (cont) SUN 20TH: WED 16TH - SAT 19TH: (Doors 6.00pm (Fri-Sat 10.30pm) / £30.00 - £55.00) DEODATO Eumir Deodato (keys), Graeme Flowers (tpt), Nichol Thomson (tb), Ben Castle (sax/flute) Andy Ross (sax, flute); Al Cherry (gtr), Andrew McKinney (bs), Pat Illingworth (drs), Pete Eckford (perc). Brazilian-born keyboardist, arranger and producer Eumir Deodato has racked up 16 platinum records and his discography, including compilations and all his work as arranger, producer and keyboardist, surpasses over 450 albums. But despite such a successful career the man known as simply ‘Deodato’ will always be best known for his brilliant adaptation of “Also Sprach Zarathustra (Theme From 2001: A Space Odyssey)”. Taken from his classic 1972 CTI recording Prelude the unlikely hit sold over a million copies and made Deodato one of the stars of seventies music! Until recording Prelude for CTI, Deodato had been better known as an arranger for the likes of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, Wes Montgomery and Frank Sinatra and for his own series of classic Bossa Nova albums recorded back home in Brazil. But when CTI head Creed Taylor gave Deodato the chance to record his own album for the label the result was a series of jazz inflected covers of classical music which spawned a massive world-wide club hit with his Latin tinged take on Strauss’s classic theme! facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 08 (Doors 6.30pm / £20.00 - £30.00) JAMES LANGTON’S SOLID SENDERS James Langton is an internationally renowned re-creator of the Big Band Swing sound. His bands, their concerts and the recordings he produces cover works from the jazz and dance bands of the early 1930s to the classic Capitol recordings of the 1950s. His various orchestras have played arrangements recreated from the original scores and also from James’ own transcriptions from recordings. Expect material from the likes of Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Duke Ellington performed by an ace band featuring awardwinning clarinetist Mark Crooks and superb vocal stylist Louise Cookman. As was the case with Langton’s last visit, the lower floor area of the club will be cleared to make space for swing dancing! SUN 20TH LUNCH: (Doors 12 noon - 4pm / £15.00 - £18.00) ALEXANDER STEWART Young full-toned vocalist who has absorbed the best qualities of popular male singers from Sinatra to Buble and has been developing his own sound and approach to jazz standards and originals. He appears here with his eight-piece band directed by pianist and composer Alex Webb. ronniescotts.co.uk / tel: 02074390747 PAGE 09 January (cont) THURS 24TH: (Doors 6pm / £15.00 - £25.00) DOUBLE BILL: MATTHEW HALSALL + ZARA McFARLANE Top-class double bill with ace Manchester based trumpeter, composer, arranger and band-leader Matthew Halsall one of the rising stars of the UK jazz scene and Mobo nominated soul-jazz sensation Zara Macfarlane. Halsall’s unique sound was brilliantly described as “Rain-streaked spiritual jazz from Manchester” by the Independent On Sunday. Halsall explores the modal jazz of John and Alice Coltrane and hard bop of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, but on his most recent album Fletcher Moss Park he offers his most personal statement yet inspired by the beauty and tranquility of Fletcher Moss Park one of Manchester’s most beautiful places. His superlative band features some of Manchester’s finest musicians including rising star pianist Taz Modi (Sub-Motion Orchestra), bassist Gavin Barras and drummer Luke Flowers (Cinematic Orchestra). The addition of Rachael Gladwin’s harp brings a sense of liquidity to the modal explorations, and Halsall's own beautiful playing lingers long after the music ends. MON 21ST - WED 23RD: (Doors 6pm / £25.00 - £40.00) MANU KATCHÉ MOBO nominated Zara McFarlane, a rising star on the UK jazz/soul scene, released her debut album on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings in October 2011. Positioned neatly between the twin worlds of modern jazz and eclectic nu-soul, Until Tomorrow confirmed the presence of a very special young voice on the UK scene. Exuding a liberal dose of subtle, stealthy swing, the album was rooted in the jazz tradition. Manu Katché (drs), Jim Watson (pno/organ), Tore Brunborg (sax), Luca Aquino (tpt). Renowned French-Ivorian former rock-drummer Manu Katché has played with everyone from Joni Mitchell to Jeff Beck and Jan Garbarek. Blessed with a remarkable tone he is a sublime drummer as at home with elegant bop as he is with unusual popish themes. He appears here with an excellent band featuring Norwegian saxophonist Tore Brunborg, trumpeter Luca Aquiano - and our very own Jim Watson on piano, one of the UK’s finest keyboardists and a brilliant performer in his own right. Expect classy, sensual contemporary jazz as heard on Katché’s recent critically acclaimed on ECM. facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 10 ronniescotts.co.uk / tel: 02074390747 PAGE 11 January (cont) SUN 27TH: (Doors 6.30pm / £20.00 - £35.00) THE RONNIE SCOTT’S BLUES EXPLOSION Co-led by pianist/vocalist Paddy Milner and explosive funk, blues and jazz guitarist Tony Remy (Incognito, Annie Lennox and Craig David), the electrifying Blues Explosion specialises in blues music from Chicago to the Delta, West Coast and British. Expect blues classics from Eric Clapton, BB King, Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Albert King, Peter Green, Howlin' Wolf, Robert Cray amongst others. MON 28TH - WED 30TH: FRI 25TH - SAT 26TH: (Doors 6.00pm & 10.30pm (two shows) / £50.00 - £70.00) MILTON NASCIMENTO Milton Nascimento (voc/gtr), Lincoln Cheib (drs), Kiko Continentino (Pno), Wilson Lopes (gtrs), Gastão Villeroy (bs) (+TBC: Widor Santiag (sax)). One of the world’s greatest voices, Ronnies Scott’s is delighted to welcome the great Milton Nascimento to our stage. By the age of two, Milton Nascimento was hammering on a piano at his grandparent’s home in his native Brazil. By six, he would spend hours on the front porch playing accordion and harmonica using his voice to replace missing notes. By nineteen he had written his first song, then, a few years later, Brazilian pop singer Elis Regina would record one of his songs opening the door to becoming one of Brazils most celebrated singer songwriters. Today, Nascimento is an international star touching audiences all over the world. His compositions, particularly those on the 1974 album Native Dancer collaboration with Wayne Shorter - remain an influence on many of today’s musicians including Esperanza Spalding. He has written and recorded a stunning 28 albums, and has worked with and appeared on albums with artist such as Paul Simon, Quincy Jones , Pat Metheny, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, and Peter Gabriel. SUN 27TH LUNCH: (Doors 6.00pm / £35.00 - £50.00) MICHEL LEGRAND A very welcome return to the club for legendary French singer, pianist, songwriter, composer, arranger, conductor and producer who has enjoyed a whirlwind career, excelling in an impressively broad range of domains from film soundtracks and French ‘chanson’ to jazz and classical music. Perhaps best known for his film soundtracks such as The Thomas Crown Affair and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, he has made occasional, and highly notable, excursions into jazz as an arranger and conductor - his late 50s masterpiece Legrand Jazz featured Miles Davis and John Coltrane. He has written for Stan Getz and Sarah Vaughan and many of his compositions have since become modern standards. Unmissable. (Doors 12 noon - 4pm / £15.00 - £18.00) BLUE HARLEM Led by tenor saxophonist Al Nichols and featuring sultry chanteuse Sophie Shaw this experienced outfit bring and intelligence and sophistication to the art of combining jazz and rhythm and blues that was prevalent on America’s westcoast of the late 40s and early 50s. facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 12 ronniescotts.co.uk / tel: 02074390747 PAGE 13 January (cont) MEMBERSHIP THUR 31ST - SAT 2ND FEB: (Doors 6.00pm (& 10.30pm Fri - Sat) / £25.00 - £45.00) LONNIE LISTON SMITH AND THE COSMIC ECHOES Lonnie Liston Smith (voc/keys), Tabitha Pearson (voc) Samir Moulay (gtr), Scott Ambush (bs), Lee Pearson (drs). Legendary jazz and soul keyboardist who came to prominence in the late 60s as a sideman for the likes of Miles Davis, Roland Kirk and most famously Pharoah Sanders. He started the Cosmic Echoes in the early 70s developing a unique form of fusion drawing on soul and spiritual jazz and scored a massive hit with the deeply vibey dance floor classic Expansions. Like Roy Ayers with whom his career runs in parallel he is a hero of the Acid-Jazz scene and has moved between soul and jazz recordings but always touched by his own unique sound. facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 14 PAGE 15 THE PERFECT JAZZ GIFT! Breath taking tribute to the Afro-Cuban innovations of the late great be-bop pioneer and trumpet legend, Dizzy Gillespie. Gillespie was first introduced to the legendary Cuban percussionist Chano Pozo in 1947 by band leader Mario Bauza. They became life-long friends and together they mixed the rhythms of Cuba with the sounds of bop creating the music we now call Afro-Cuban jazz, which became an instant hit, attracting people to dance to its unique rhythms. Gillespie's most enduring Afro-Cuban compositions were massive hits and have become world wide standards “Manteca” and “Tin Tin Deo”. At the same time percussionist Machito’s Afro Cubans (formed in 1940), the creators of Cu-Bop, were a major influence on musicians like Dizzy Gillespie and they famously recorded together in the late 50s. Dizzy loved it so much, that in 1975, he invited Machito’s son, Mario Grillo or Machito Jr., to join Dizzy’s band for the recording of ‘Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods’. So it only makes sense to have him join the Dizzy Gillespie™ Afro Cuban Experience under the direction of John Lee, Dizzy’s long-time bassist, and the director of the Dizzy Gillespie™ Big Band. facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 20 (Doors 6.00pm / £15.00 - £28.50) TRINITY LABAN JAZZ Showcasing some of the UK finest young jazz students from Trinity Laban Jazz the Trinity Jazz Ensemble directed by Malcolm Earle-Smith will perform music by Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and other composers associated with the Village Vanguard.
