City Makes Homebuilding History
with Habitat Houses By Martha Michael
Even a massive rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of hundreds of people celebrating the first-ofits-kind community of homes built specifically for veterans by Habitat for Humanity.

Questions Regarding
Laemmle Theater Deal
By Josh Heath
In a partnership between California Department of Veterans Affairs and Habitat for Humanity
San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley, 26 families of veterans are at the threshold of moving into
new homes in a community on Centre Pointe Pkwy in Santa Clarita. They move in approximately a month.
“This is the first program
of its kind, to extend a
home ownership benefit
to veterans of any era,”
said Josh Towe, who will
move into a new home
with his wife, Denise, and
three sons, Ethan, Aydan
and Brysan. Towe served
in the Army from 20062012, and deployed to
Iraq for 15 months during
his service. “We lived on
posts and didn’t have to
worry about rent. It’s
pretty expensive to live on
your own.”

Precise details regarding the Laemmle theater proposal that
was moved forward by the Santa Clarita City Council recently
are still hard to come by. Here is what is known so far:
Serrano Development Group and Laemmle Theaters have
submitted plans to build a series of projects in Old Town
Newhall. Serrano Development will be responsible for the
creation of approximately 20,000 square feet of new restaurants and retail businesses, as well as 46 units of residential
housing. Laemmle Theatres is looking to construct a six-screen
movie theatre within the same area.
The total cost of both projects to the City of Santa Clarita is
estimated to be $12-$13 million. The City Council, in a
unanimous vote, instructed City staff to begin negotiations
with the two groups on a final deal.
The proposal with Serrano is straight-forward, simply another
step towards fulfilling the goal of city leaders to revitalize
Newhall. The Laemmle theatre project, however, comes with
its own set of questions.

Retriever. He gets along very well with other
dogs, and is a happy guy. Bernie is not deaf- he
is hearing.

Laemmle Theater
For starters, how will a local Laemmle Theater end up differently than the many
art house cinemas across the country currently struggling to keep up attendance?
cites several surveys the City has commissioned that he says showed strong local
support for a new Laemmle theater.
“The number of people who want to see movies that aren’t franchise-type spectacles is very small. The movies might be there, but where are the distributors
and where is the audience?” asked filmmaker James Gray, in a 2014 New York
Times article on the state of independent cinema.
This is convincing at first glance, but the City Council must divulge to the public
in the coming months the methodology behind the surveys. Did they sample a
wide demographic of residents? Were they statistically valid?
This question by itself would not mean anything if it wasn’t for the fact that
Laemmle Theaters is requesting a subsidy from the City of Santa Clarita as part
of the deal to open a theater in Newhall. Determining the exact amount Laemmle may receive will be a part of the upcoming negotiations approved by the
City Council.
In exchange for the public money, Laemmle is offering to sign an operating
covenant with the City – a legal term for a contract that would force Laemmle to
keep the Newhall theatre for a given number of years.
The rationale behind the subsidy is that it will make the economics work for
Laemmle’s expansion here locally. Greg Laemmle, president of Laemmle Theaters, estimates the movie house will eventually serve 150,000-200,000 patrons a
year.
“There’s an opportunity here to jump start the development of what will be an
authentic and vibrant environment in Newhall,” Laemmle said.
He claims that figure based on the success of Laemmle Theatres in Claremont,
Pasadena, and North Hollywood – markets he said mirror Santa Clarita’s. It will
be important for City Hall in the coming months to get Laemmle to thoroughly
explain why the Santa Clarita market is comparable to his successes, rather than
areas where Laemmle theatres have shut down in recent years.
For if the economics don’t work – and at the end of the covenant agreement the
Newhall theatre shuts down – that would mean every penny of taxpayer money
spent to bring a Laemmle theatre to Santa Clarita would have effectively been
for nothing.
Additionally, it is worth noting that studio-made films make up approximately
90 percent of the films seen in America, according to 2013 statistics from BoxOfficeMojo.com. That’s a tremendously large market share.
Mr. Laemmle is claiming that up to 200,000 citizens in Santa Clarita are waiting
to spend money to see a genre of cinema the film industry hardly markets to the
public. Some say that’s a steep rhetorical mountain to climb.
But, of course, in the end, having questions on a matter is different than being
in opposition to it. All the brightest estimates the City and Laemmle are giving
in regards to this project may actually be true. Members of the community call
for more proof, however, before public money is spent. No one can say that has
happened yet.

How a Copywriter Can
Improve Your Website
By Warren Schultz
Everybody needs a website. Without one, you
can’t compete in today’s economy. But, just
having an online presence isn’t enough. You
need to know what to write on a website: the
right words to convey the message you want to
send customers – existing and potential ones.
You need an Internet copywriter who can not
only turn a phrase, but also write copy that will
say exactly what you want to say.
Working with a copywriter can greatly improve
your website in the following ways:
•
•
•
Your website will be clean. The Internet
is full of websites with typographical and
factual errors, as well as writing that is
so unprofessional you wonder how those
companies ever got off the ground, let
alone stay in business. A copywriter knows
the language and will write copy that is
free of grammar, spelling and punctuation
errors. The result: no poor writing that
might alienate new or existing customers/
clients.
site, a copywriter will write copy that will
attract people to your website, thus increasing the chances they take advantage of
your products/services. Once you’ve won
them, a copywriter can write about the
great, new and wonderful things happening, thus keeping them informed.
•
Your website will accurately depict
your message or story. One of the worst
possible scenarios is for your website to
inaccurately inform each visitor what
you’re about, what your company is about,
what your products and services are about,
or what your message is. Websites also
tell the story behind the company, and it
would be a nightmare if it wasn’t told in
the most engaging, creative and correct
way. A copywriter ensures your story or
message will remain on point.
For more information call Warren at 818-2817628 or go to www.TAPSolutions.net.
Your website will be found online. A
copywriter knows that the key to being found online is using the concept of
Search Engine Optimization. It’s a type of
writing in which keywords are used within
the copy that will be found and ranked by
the search engines. A copywriter seamlessly integrates the keywords you want
to use into the copy in such a way that the
search engines won’t eliminate your site
from being ranked.
Your website will attract and keep new
customers/clients. Whether it’s the copy
on the home page or a blog related to your
Residents Can Stay Informed
of Street Construction
With the number of streets the average resident drives, and with the
number of different areas with resurfacing projects, it is challenging
to stay abreast of places to avoid
and when. Santa Clarita residents
can keep track of the annual Overlay and Slurry Seal Project, currently underway in several Santa
Clarita neighborhoods, through a
new webpage on the City’s website, Santa-Clarita.com/Resurfacing.
The new webpage provides a holistic picture of the overlay and slurry
seal project, with details about the
construction process, a list and
maps of selected streets for the
project, up-to-date construction
times, contact information and
more.
Every year, Santa Clarita streets
are evaluated and identified for asphalt maintenance needs.
The City has contracted with Sully-Miller Contracting Co. for overlay resurfacing and Intermountain
Slurry Seal, Inc. for slurry seal resurfacing to improve city roadways
and extend their life.
The project includes a total of 182
streets in 22 site areas which have
been scheduled to receive resurfacing construction through the remaining months of 2015.
Residents and drivers in project
areas should anticipate traffic delays between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Monday through Friday. Drivers
are encouraged to commute slowly
and cautiously through construction areas until road improvements
are complete.
The Bouquet Canyon Road, Newhall Avenue, Soledad Canyon
Road and McBean Parkway portions of the Overlay project are set
to begin this summer and will take
place in the evening from 8:30 p.m.
and 4:30 a.m. Monday through
Friday.
Notices will be posted in the affected project areas and distributed to
all residents living along construction areas. Santa Clarita residents
are encouraged to pay attention to
all posted parking and construction signs.
For a complete list of chosen streets,
estimated start dates and additional
information detailing this year’s
overlay and slurry seal project, visit

Color Me Mine Valencia
Hosts Special Olympics
Athletes
By Melissa Lampert
Color Me Mine in Valencia
is hosting 140 athletes from
the Special Olympics Summer
Games Thursday for an
afternoon of ceramic painting
at Westfield Valencia Town
Center.
The athletes, who are from
all over the world and are
currently being hosted in Santa
Clarita, will each get to handpaint a 6-inch tile portraying
the Special Olympics symbol
in the color scheme of their
choice.
“We’re very honored to
be asked to help (Special
Olympics Santa Clarita)
in this event,” said Larry
Parsons, owner of Color Me
Mine Valencia and Porter
Ranch. “We’re thrilled to
support these athletes that
have worked so hard to get
here, and we want the best for
them.”
The afternoon is set to begin
with a “parade” through the
first floor of the Westfield
Valencia Town Center and
concludes at the old Talbots
location near the food court,
where Color Me Mine staff
will be waiting with ceramics
and paint supplies.
“They can use their creativity,”
Parsons said. “These are
tremendous times for bonding
with kids … from other
countries, and a way for
them to build friendships —
hopefully long-lasting ones,
because they may see each
other at future games. It’s a
way for them to foster these
relationships.”
When the athletes are finished
painting their tiles, Color Me
Mine staff will bring them
back to their Valencia location
to glaze and wrap them,
with the ceramics ready to be
taken home to the athletes’
respective countries next week.
Color Me Mine Valencia
is sponsoring the event in
partnership with Logix
Federal Credit Union and
PayForward.
“It’s a great honor, especially
since we’ve only owned this
store here in Santa Clarita as
of January 1,” Parsons said.
“We’re thrilled to be part of
this community.”

OPINION
Lean to the Left
Jul 24 - Jul 30, 2015
By Sylvia Turner
Wages for the Ages
This week’s big panic for local Right-wingers involved the minimum wage
hike, which the L.A. County Board of Supervisors voted to adopt. Minimum
wage will be raised from the current $9 an hour to $15 an hour by the year
2020. Give it up for organized labor!
What’s the big deal? Most of us will be dead by then! Okay, only some of us.
But, the point is, it’s almost five years from now, and Santa Clarita isn’t doing
it anyway.
The only parts of our valley affected are unincorporated areas, such as
Stevenson Ranch, Castaic, Val Verde and Westridge – and only the businesses
there. They’ll probably all be incorporated by then.
And small businesses have it easy. Companies and nonprofits with fewer than
26 employees really only have to raise the wage by a buck-fifty two years from
now. Beginning July 1, 2017 the minimum wage will be raised to $10.50 an
hour. Then they have another year to raise it another buck-fifty.
Even if you don’t agree, at least try to understand the rationale behind it. It
comes from a place of compassion.
“Regardless of definition, many L.A. County residents who work full-time
earn wages that do not cover the basic costs of living, which should provide
for safe housing, healthy food, clothing and basic medical care,” according to
a motion by Supervisors Sheila Kuehl and Hilda Solis earlier. “The current
minimum wage in Los Angeles County is $9 an hour, set by state law, which
equates to $18,000 a year.”
After L.A. City Council voted in favor of the wage hike earlier this year, Eric
C. Bauman, L.A. County Democratic Party chair and California Democratic
Party vice chair, released a statement.
“For too long, working families have seen their quality of life slowly deteriorating, while those earning the most have seen great increases at their
expense. I commend the Los Angeles City Council for today’s decisive action,
which recognizes that a minimum wage salary should not leave someone
in poverty, but should enable them to live decently and with dignity,” said
Bauman. “Today, our City Council has officially recognized that someone
working 40 hours a week should be able to afford a roof over their head and
food for their children. Now it is time for the Los Angeles County Board of
Supervisors and the rest of the country to do the same.”
There are other issues of interest that the Left has introduced or sponsored
in Congress. I wish the Right could see that the Left is simply attempting to
advocate for those without the power to change the system by themselves.
Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) co-sponsored a resolution this month calling for
equal gender pay in the Federation Internationale de Football Association.
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) sponsored a bill, H.R. 3060, to stop child abuse in
residential programs for teens. It’s been referred to the House Committee on
Education and the Workforce.
Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL) introduced a resolution expressing the sense of
Congress that female athletes be paid the same as their male counterparts and
organizers of world class competitions actively take part in combating the
wage gap.
There are many more in process, of course. If Conservatives would put their
feet in the work boots of others they may see that many of these causes –
including the wage hike – have merit.

Biased News
It’s been a longstanding argument from the Left that Fox News isn’t really
news, and the conservative bias makes their reporting worthless and nothing
more than propaganda. Every time I’ve heard someone make this statement
I’ve always followed with a question: “Do you really think the other news
agencies are any different?”
What people tend to forget is that while we don’t have a state-run media
(which could be debatable), television networks, newspapers and their respective news programs are all for-profit ventures. Your favorite news anchor,
regardless of the network or how unbiased it claims to be, is not giving you
the news for free. And money, of course, is the greatest creator of bias in our
society.
The major news outlets have made quite a hobby of defending themselves
and the quality of their news by attacking the others, claiming themselves
to be the unbiased source, while the rest are corrupted and untrustworthy.
It seems that CNN decided to buck this trend and chose to show its absolute bias this weekend when it announced it would refuse to cover Donald
Trump’s presidential campaign with him as a candidate, but would instead
be covering him as an entertainer.
This may seem like no big deal to many (especially those on the far Left), but
I see it as a very scary evolution in the downward spiral American journalism has been in for the past decade or so. When the uber-liberal California
governor’s race included everyone from porn stars to childhood actors, they
had no trouble covering it, but now that a conservative candidate with media
savvy (the one thing lacking from most GOP candidates) has taken the stage,
they refuse to allow the American people to make their own decision.
What bothers me the most about this decision to not even pretend to be unbiased anymore is that it is signaling the loss of one of the last true American
freedoms. In a nation that prides itself on being the land of the free, the right
and ability to choose and vote for whichever candidate you prefer is really
one of the only freedoms we have left.
By Robert Patrick Lewis
first amendment in our Bill of Rights is supposed to guarantee freedom of
speech, that freedom apparently doesn’t apply if you want to express yourself
as a religious person (even though freedom of religion is supposed to be an
integral part of our society).
In a free market capitalistic society (which we are supposed to have) you have
the freedom to choose what you want or don’t want to spend your money on;
this applies in America today, unless it’s insurance and the government only
wants you to spend your money on companies who gave generously to the
democratic presidential campaigns.
There are even laws on the books regarding campaign coverage and ads,
trying to ensure that different networks give all candidates an even amount
of coverage, allowing the American people the freedom to choose who wins
their vote.
But now CNN feels you don’t deserve that freedom. We had a joke in one of
my previous offices that the most depressing show on television was CNN,
or the Constantly Negative News channel, and now I realize that joke has
become a reality.
Robert Patrick Lewis was a Green Beret OIF/

All That’s Good in the SCV
Broadway ROCKS Friday
at LA SummerFEST
Slowing the ‘Summer Slide’
Tutor Doctor’s Learning Camp
by Martha Michael
By Martha Michael
Those who prefer more contemporary musicals will feel that
SummerFEST’s latest production
was written for them. Broadway
ROCKS is this Friday’s stage
presentation at the Santa Clarita
Shakespeare Festival’s summer
cultural festival.
For one night only, the music of
Broadway’s rock-based musicals
will entertain in a special benefit
performance for local youth theatre programs. This Friday, July
24 at 8 p.m. audience members
will hear songs from contemporary Broadway shows that
feature rock music.
Local talent Leslie Berra created
the event and is directing the
show, featuring alumni from her
long-running community series
“A Gift of Song” and other projects. Berra is a longtime theatre
artist in the Santa Clarita Valley,
acting, directing and serving as
a board member and advisor for
the Canyon Theatre Guild, and
the REP East Playhouse. She is
an advocate for youth theatre
programs, and Berra has directed
local productions of “Rent,”
“Chicago,” “The Full Monty,”
and “The Great American
Trailer Park Musical.”
The ensemble for the evening includes Leslie Berra, Nikki Berra,
George Chavez, Lori D’Itri, Gin
Treadwell Eng, Ed Hill, Sam
Hyde, David Kenny, Melissa Joy
Castro Kneeland, Sarah Krieg,
Tom Lund, Kelly Miyake, Erin
Rivlin, Sarah Stoddard and Beth
Ann Sweezer.
“This is a very special night, with
some very special people,” says
David Stears, executive director
of the Santa Clarita Shakespeare
Festival. “Leslie Berra continues to support our community
with her heart and talents. We
are very honored to have this
wonderful event with us this
summer.”
The event requires tickets and is
a special event in support of the
free Shakespeare series, the Summer Apprentice program and the
SCSF Scholarship fund. Tickets
are available at https://broadwayrocks.eventbrite.com.

While many parents seek the usual
“keep my child busy in the summer” experience, some of the community’s educational enterprises
have something a little meatier in
mind.
Tutor Doctor Santa Clarita takes
the academics out of a school setting and, by placing it in a hotel,
including breakfast each morning, it
doesn’t look or feel like school. The
camp is held at the Hilton Garden
Inn Six Flags in Valencia.
“What kid doesn’t like hotel breakfast?” posed one camper’s parent.
The camp runs weekly through August 6, Monday through Thursday
from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Spots are still
available and Tutor Doctor will run
the program next summer as well.
Every child is assessed, so that skill
level drives the curriculum, intensively addressing individual areas of
concern in an interactive setting.
“Summer learning loss is an issue
for all children and all schools,”
said a report by the Nellie Mae
Education Foundation called “The
Learning Season.” “Evidence suggests that summer programs — well
designed and implemented — can
not only maintain school-skills over
the summer months, but also boost
learning in teamwork, problem
solving, communication, and other
key areas.”
Staff members and parents have
noticed the power of positive praise
in the program and seeing growth
in key areas due to the structured
assignments. Students complete
lessons that combine one-on-one
interaction with tutors along with
some web-based programs.
Said Director of Education Dawn
Oliver, “A good portion of our selfesteem is locked up in our ability to
read, write, and do math well. We
underestimate the joy that comes
from fluency in these areas. It is the
best gift to give a child.”
Recess takes place outside in the
hotel courtyard, while simple games
of Simon Says or a bean bag toss
break up the daily studies. The
last class of the day is watercolor
painting, and each child is learning
professional techniques along with
the enjoyment of the art process.
Over 97 percent of current Tutor
Doctor parents polled replied that
they would recommend the program to others.
For those who cannot participate in
the summer academic program, Tutor
Doctor Santa Clarita offers in-home
tutoring all year long. You can contact
the staff at 661-219-0770 or email summerschool.scvtutordoctor@gmail.com or

All That’s Good in the SCV
Non-Profit of the Week: Mothers Fighting For Others
By Melissa Lampert
When SCV resident and MFFO Founder Racquel Turner typed two simple
words into an online search engine almost a decade ago, she had no idea
of the drastic impact it would have not only on her own life, but on the
lives of dozens of orphans nearly 10,000 miles away as well. Those words
were “Volunteer Africa,” and they would shape the future of the Santa
Clarita-based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping Kenya’s orphans,
Mothers Fighting For Others.
Not long after that day, Turner made
her first trip to Africa in October 2007,
where she volunteered at an all-girls
orphanage housing more than 50
children outside of Nairobi in Kenya.
sponsor the education of a handful of the girls, with more girls added to
the program every year, until the decision was made in 2010 to take on the
financial responsibility for every girl’s educational needs.
“In the developing world, we take education for granted,” organization
officials said. “High school isn’t free in Kenya, and the cost to go is a
struggle for most families and orphanage directors. And if you are a girl, the
odds of you going to school, let alone finishing, are very small … (The Gift
of Education) program was designed
to help the girls not just achieve their
goals, but to dream bigger ones.”
Today, MFFO is in the process of
taking on complete responsibility for
the care of the more than 50 orphans
currently living at Saint Monica’s,
with plans to move the girls to a
larger building to accommodate their
growing needs.
“I realized after one day, all the girls
wanted was to be loved,” Turner said
in a statement on the MFFO website.
“They are all survivors. Each and every
one of them are orphans. Some have
been raped. Some have been on the
streets. Some have experienced both.”
Once completed, the new facility
will include a library space equipped
with books, computers with internet
access and foreign language tutorials.
Every child will also have access to
supplemental enrichment programs to
support their social and educational
needs, as well as much-needed
medical attention and counseling.
After two short weeks Turner had
fallen in love with each and every girl,
whom she said had become like her
own daughters. The experience would
change her forever.
“Let’s just say I will never be the same
woman, let alone mother, again,” she
continued. “This was the beginning of a
path that I had no idea I was on.”
Just two months later, Turner founded MFFO with a mission to provide
her newfound “Kenyan daughters” at Saint Monica’s Children’s Home
with things their parents would have provided, like a loving and nurturing
environment and a quality education to help them achieve their highest
potential.
“Our goal is to help create a true
home for orphans, not just an orphanage,” read a statement on the MFFO
website. “Our home will support an environment where children are loved
and inspired and enabled to live out their dreams for a better future.”

donated for the girls, and they had no idea how
to use it.
“I realized, in that moment, surrounded by eight
teenage girls, that there was no mom to do this
for them,” she said.
Turner’s journey first began in 2006 when she
was doing research on volunteering in Africa,
and less than a year later, she found herself at an
all-girls orphanage outside of Nairobi in Kenya,
helping care for the dozens of children who lived
there.
And so Mothers Fighting For Others was born.
Turner founded the Santa Clarita-based nonprofit
organization with the vision of helping each and
every child at Saint Monica’s Children’s Home
feel loved, safe and secure and to help them fulfill
their potential with a quality education.
“Let’s just say I will never be the same woman, let

the MFFO website. “This was the beginning of a

I met were strangers to me when I arrived. By the
time I left, they were my daughters. I had fallen in

Restaurant Review
The Original Mike’s Diner
Last Sunday morning Brady and I, enroute to Pyramid Lake,
stopped for breakfast at The Original Mike’s Diner in Castaic. The
comfortable eatery has been there since 1947.
We entered Mike’s Diner and were met very pleasantly by Christine, who soon became our server. She invited us to sit wherever
we liked, so we selected a table by the window. The dining room,
counter and tables were very clean and well used. The ambiance
was that of a popular, comfortable and well patronized diner. We
felt welcome!
Quickly Christine offered us coffee, which was a welcome offer.
Our coffee mugs were always full, in fact. The coffee was hot,
selected the French toast and I chose the Spanish omelet with bell
peppers added.
By Ben Oakley
Once our food arrived, we dug in. Brady enjoyed his light and
tions were more than ample.
During our visit to Mike’s Diner we took the time to review the
menu. There were lots of comfort food offerings, all with very
reasonable prices. We look forward to returning to The Original
Mike’s Diner … perhaps on a cold winter’s day when the Interstate
is closed. I’ll order either chicken pot pie, shepherd’s pie or meatloaf.
The Original Mike’s Diner is located at 31537 Castaic Road in
Castaic and is open 24 hours a day.

Christine visited with us while we waited for our meals. She told
us a bit about the history of Mike’s Diner and Castaic. She also told
us how, during the winter when Interstate 5 is closed due to snow
on the “Grapevine,” she really enjoys working at the diner.

Book Authored By Brain Injury Survivor
Thirteen years into her life, Christine Hermann was forced to start from the beginning – when she became a teenager with the emotional capacity of an infant.
The day before her thirteenth birthday, Hermann was playing outside with her
friends, when she ran out into the street and was hit by a car. Thrown 46 feet
upon impact, she slammed the left side of her head on the hood of the vehicle,
ultimately suffering from the effects of her forehead hitting the asphalt, violently
battering her frontal lobe.
The accident put her into a coma and left her with irreversible brain damage.
Diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI, Hermann would be left with
delayed emotional growth and development, as well as difficulty organizing,
learning, and understanding new concepts.
The assault on her frontal lobe would tear years of experience from her life – depriving her of the ability to establish
strong interpersonal relationships with others.
Hermann returned to school after intense recovery and
would graduate on time with her class, but she felt isolated
and alone. It would take her years to realize the extent
of her injuries and the impact they had on her emotional
development.
After high school, Hermann attended college in San Diego. But, while her classmates were following the natural
progression of adulthood, Hermann found herself unable to build relationships.
She was in her 20s, but had the emotional state of a 13-year-old. She wanted to
marry and have children, yet she seemed incapable at the time.
Determined to find a career path, Hermann settled with teaching. Although this
was not her passion, the occupation would provide enough income to support
herself. But, teaching came with many obstacles for Hermann. The TBI caused
her to have difficulty organizing and learning new concepts, and she had been
deprived of a childhood because of the accident – making it more challenging to
understand the developmental stages of her students.
After establishing her teaching career, Hermann was able to buy her first home.
Being a naturally energetic person, she was highly motivated to achieve her personal goals. But, according to Hermann, something was still not right. In social
situations, people would dismiss her because of her immaturity, unaware of her
stunted emotional growth.
After 15 years of teaching, Hermann was laid off from her job, causing her to
foreclose on her home and file bankruptcy.
by Sarah Farnell
While driving on the freeway one day, her situation brought her to a breaking
point. “I was so angry that years of my life had been taken from me,” said Hermann. “I was angry at God because 27 years of my life had been taken away. …
I was busy recovering who I had been. How do you get that back?”
At that time in her life, Hermann said that she finally realized that her brain
injury had been preventing her from forming relationships. After years of feeling
discouraged, she took the time to reflect on her experiences.
“I was not acting like my age. I wasn’t able to discern appropriateness. That is
what happens with a traumatic brain injury,” she said.
Eventually moving back in with her parents, Hermann spent time
learning about what she truly was passionate about – the study
of human behavior and connections. She decided to go back to
school, taking writing and psychology classes. She loves psychology and views it as a way to analyze her own struggles, as well as
improve the lives of others.
“I want to encourage people to be the best they can be,” said
Hermann. “I know what it is like to be discouraged and not have
the tools to succeed. But if someone can walk right beside you, it
makes the walk that much easier.”
Hermann wrote a book based on her life struggles, called “Because
it Didn’t Kill Me,” as a bridge to help encourage those with traumatic brain injuries, as well as a tool to educate people about the needs of those struggling with
TBI’s. She wants people to understand that individuals with this injury need
time and patience, not isolation and rejection.
“If I would have known I had a disability, I would have been in contact with
somebody to get the tools to succeed.”
Hermann continues to tutor children, and enjoys working with her publishing
company, Baylin Books. Her journey has lead her to speak at conferences and
share her story, building connections and fulfilling her passions.
“Jeremiah 29:11 states that God has plans for you, for a future and a hope,” said
Hermann. “I believe God made me a teacher to give me back the childhood that
I lost. A traumatic brain injury is not the end.”

which stemmed from a 20-year-old bench warrant, so he was released. What
really upsets some law enforcement entities about the release isn’t that charges
weren’t pressed. Instead, it is because U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials had previously lodged a “detainer” with the courts in San
Francisco so that federal agents could pick him up, but that “detainer” was not
honored.
Over the years, Sanchez has been deported five times, and has multiple felonies
and other drug-related crimes on his criminal record, as well as criminal re-entry
into the U.S. after removal.
In 2013, San Francisco Mayor Ross Mirkarimi signed the “Due Process for All”
ordinance, which barred officials in jails from honoring the requests made by
ICE agents to hold inmates beyond their release dates so that federal agents can
come pick them up. The ordinance allowed an exception if the individual was
facing court actions on violent felonies and was convicted of a similar crime in
the past seven years.
Across the state, law enforcement agencies have been cracking down on cooperation with ICE “detainer” requests and last year, federal courts deemed that the
“detainers” were unconstitutional unless reviewed by a judge. Unfortunately for
ICE agents, there is no such process currently in place to allow for such a review.
While the ICE agency would like nothing more
than for local law enforcement to hand over undocumented immigrants whenever they get the chance, police forces are loathe
to comply. They see the wanton holding and/or deportation as harmful to the
community and detrimental to the trust they are currently trying to build after
years of bad blood between police and communities in many areas across the
nation.
In Los Angeles County, law enforcement officials have stopped responding to
“detainer” requests entirely, and simply refer ICE agents to imminent releases
under California’s Trust Act. The Trust Act was passed in 2014 to limit immigration holds in California jails. Additionally, the trust act provides safety for
illegal immigrants to come forward as victims or witnesses of crimes without
fear of deportation.
While the non-compliance with ICE “detainer” requests across the country falls
in line with the U.S. constitution, the tragic case of Kate Steinle highlights the
limitations that the laws that are designed to protect our freedom so often possess. Granted, nobody could have foreseen that Sanchez would go on to murder
an innocent person just a few months after being released from custody; however, the fact that he did shows that there is still work to be done to ensure that it
doesn’t happen again.

Valencia Father/Son Duo
Create ‘420 Friendly’ Online
Dating Site
By Melissa Lampert
Thanks to the innovation of a
father/son duo from Valencia,
singles in the SCV and beyond
can now join an online dating site
geared toward marijuana-friendly
individuals in search of their
significant others.
Called BudHarmony.com, the site
was launched earlier this month
by local entrepreneur Micah
Kritzman and his father Jerry in an
effort to help singles who support
marijuana use find each other.
“Bud Harmony provides a
pleasant environment where
those who include marijuana in
their lives, whether medicinally
or recreationally, can meet one
another and have the opportunity
to create relationships that could
lead to marriage,” Micah Kritzman
said.
Kritzman realized the need for
the site after noticing too many
relationships in his own life and
the lives of his friends and family
members ended quickly when the
topic of marijuana use came up.
“Most all dating websites are
geared toward the general
population, with some focusing
on specific religions or activities,”
he said. “Members of Bud
Harmony have declared up front
that marijuana is not a problem

for them, clearing the way for a
‘budding’ relationship.”
After spending the last year
conducting research and
developing the site, the father/
son team is planning a national
marketing campaign they expect to
launch in the next few months.
Their target audience? The more
than 20 million single Americans
who smoke, vaporize and/or eat
marijuana, according to Kritzman.
“Marijuana is now mainstream
in America. … We have learned
that there are great health benefits
to cannabis,” he said, citing data
recently revealed by CNN’s Chief
Medical Correspondent Dr.
Sanjay Gupta, who called for the
national legalization of marijuana
use earlier this year in a CNN
documentary called “Weed 3: The
Marijuana Revolution.”
“This is going to be a hot spot for
single people,” Kritzman added.
“We expect a lot of interest
once we begin our marketing
campaign.”
To jumpstart the site, the
Kritzmans are offering the first
year of membership free to the first
42,000 members, with a regular
monthly fee of $4.20 or $42 per
year.
Film professionals will present a panel
discussion next week to filmmakers,
artists, performers, actors and arts
organization representatives of all skill
levels. Part of the free New Heights:
Artist Development Workshop, “The
ABC’s of Filmmaking” will offer
attendees an in-depth, behind-thescenes insight into the film industry
by detailing the business side of
production, resources and financing.

The workshop will be held on
Wednesday, July 29, 2015 from 7-9
p.m. in the Century Room at Santa
Clarita City Hall, located at 23920
Valencia Boulevard and will feature
Sean Hood, Mark Stolaroff, and
Jacques Thelemaque, who will share
their filmmaking experience and
provide attendees with insight and
tools to create films.
“The New Heights: Artist Development
series, an initiative supported by the
Santa Clarita City Council and Arts

artists, performers and arts organization
representatives with valuable tools to
expand their knowledge in various
fields and increase opportunities for
success,” said Mayor Marsha McLean.
Sean Hood is best known for his
involvement in horror, action and

film school, Hood’s, “The Dorm,” was

Knight Introduces Saint Francis Dam
Disaster National Memorial Bill
By Jessica Boyer
Congressman Steve Knight (R-Palmdale) introduced the Saint Francis Dam
Disaster National Memorial and Castaic Wilderness Act in Washington D.C.
Wednesday morning.
H.R. 3153 would authorize a national memorial to commemorate the more
than 400 people killed by the collapse of the St. Francis Dam on March 12,
1928, according to officials. The bill would also help educate the public about
the historical event.
“It is important to educate the public and honor the individuals who perished
in the St. Francis Dam Disaster,” Knight said. “This memorial site is a high
priority for the Santa Clarita Valley and I am proud to be part of the effort to
make it happen.”
Congressman Buck McKeon, Knight’s predecessor, introduced a similar bill,
H.R. 5357, the Saint Francis Dam Disaster National Memorial Act, nearly a
year ago, but retired before the bill went through.
“Many thanks to Congressman Steve Knight for his foresight in protecting
69,000 acres of pristine wilderness for generations to come, and for having the
federal government acknowledge the greatest civil engineering tragedy in the
United States, the Saint Francis Dam failure,” said California Assemblyman
Scott Wilk, (R- Santa Clarita). “This memorial will honor those that had fallen
and will help bring closure to friends and families.”
If approved, H.R. 3153 will establish a national memorial to honor the victims
of the Saint Francis Dam disaster of March 12, 1928, create the Saint Francis
Dam Advisory Commission to plan the memorial and work in conjunction
with the Department of Interior, permanently protect the memorial site and
surrounding area of the Saint Francis Dam, educate the general public on this
tragic event that may be America’s worst civil engineering failure of the 20th
Century and the worst flood in the state of California’s history and designate
the Saint Francis Dam National Monument, according to officials.
“I am delighted that Congressman Knight has introduced this wonderful bill.
It has been 87 years since the Saint Francis Disaster,” said Dianne ErskineHellrigel, president of the Santa Clara River Watershed Conservancy and
president and executive director of the Community Hiking Club. “Families have
waited long enough for their loved ones to be memorialized, and Congressman
Knight has accepted this challenge. Not only has he worked hard to give these
families closure, but he is protecting the last available pristine wilderness in the
district for generations to come.”
Erskine-Hellrigel gave Knight a tour of the St. Francis Dam disaster site earlier
this month.
preserve some 69,000 acres of the Castaic wilderness to be enjoyed in its pristine
condition by ours and future generations,” said Alan Pollack, president of the
Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society. “There are precious few areas left in
Southern California where we can enjoy unspoiled nature at its finest. Thanks
to our Congressman Steve Knight for introducing this landmark bill into the
House of Representatives. We hope to get swift passage there and in the Senate,
and onto the desk of our President for his signature.”
Other supporters of H.R. 3153 include: Santa Clarita City Councilmember
Laurene Weste, city of Santa Clarita Parks, Recreation & Community Services
and SCVTAC Chair Ruthann Levison, VFW Post 2043 Commander Gerald V.
Olivas, Southern California Organizer for the California Wilderness Coalition
Linda Castro and more than 50 other individuals, businesses and organizations
in and around the Santa Clarita Valley.
The whole project for the national memorial began about four years ago when
Pollack visited the Johnstown Flood National Memorial in Pennsylvania, where
more than 2,000 people were killed when the dam broke in 1889, he said.
“Then I started reading about Johnstown and I came to realize there were so
many similarities between that disaster and this one. You had a dam that was
poorly constructed, you have this big tragedy happen, hundreds of people dying,
whole families, terrible reception and that’s what we had here,” Pollack said.
“There was one glaring difference between the two disasters, in Johnstown
— they had a national memorial, visitor center, documentary film and the St.
Francis Dam has nothing, so I figured why not try to do this with the St. Francis
Dam.”
Pollack brought on Erskine-Hellrigel to bring the project together.
H.R. 3153 was introduced to the House of Representatives Wednesday, July
22 and Knight’s office believes the bill will head to the House Committee on
Natural Resources next.
The construction of the dam began in August of 1924 and began to fill with
water on March 1, 1928, according to SCVHistory.
A little more than two-and-a-half minutes before midnight on March 12, 1928,
the dam failed.
The wall of water, 55 feet taller than the original Colossus’ tallest hill at Six
Flags Magic Mountain, crashed through San Francisquito Canyon and reached
the Pacific Ocean just south of Ventura. It took the immense wave five-and-ahalf hours to reach the ocean.
An estimated 431 people were killed.
Different from H.R. 5357, the H.R. 3153 bill also seeks to designate
surrounding federal lands as wilderness due to its historic and environmental
significance, according to officials.
“We now have a golden opportunity to recognize and honor the lives of those
hundreds of victims by passing legislation to create the St. Francis Dam
National Memorial and Monument. In addition, this bill will set aside and
The failure of the St. Francis Dam is known as the second-worst disaster in
California history, coming behind the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and
subsequent fires, and America’s worst civil engineering failure of the 20th
century, according to SCVHistory.com.

Matthew Grade 5
Shayla Grade 2
FIESTA
Hi, my name is Shayla and I would like to tell you about giraffes. They are
tall and they like to eat leaves. Eating leaves help them run very fast. We learned
about giraffes last week for Africa. This week, we learned about South America.
They have a lot of animals like foxes, monkeys, snakes, and tortoises. I also saw a
tarantula!
At C.A.R.E. Learning Academy, we had a fiesta to celebrate our hard work and
South America Week! We made piñatas and practiced special dances. Some
countries like our country have piñatas, but other countries don’t have any
piñatas. Same thing with dancing. We don’t have traditional dancing, but other
countries do. I liked the candy from the piñata cause when you hit the piñata it
breaks and drops candy.
SOUTH AMERICA
At care learning academy we learned about South America. The highest
mountain there is the Aconcagua it is 22,841. The deadliest animal there are the
leopards. The top part of South America is near the equator.
This was fun talking about South America and learning here at CARE.
LEARNING.ACADEMY..
Elijah Grade 6
This week we learned about the continent South America and all of its country’s.
I also learned that the tallest mountain is Aconcagua Mountain and it’s 22,841
feet. The top of it is near the Equator so the country is basically below the
Equator.
I learned how to become a great leader from going to C.A.R.E. Learning
Academy. I think kids come back from fieldtrips happy because they did
something for a good cause like the going to the Ronald McDonald house. I rest
my case.
Makayla and Alexia Grade 3
Hi my name is Makayla Yera and my friend’s name is Alexia Notari. We would
like to tell you about Mission San Fernado Rey de Espana and Wildlife Learning
Center .First we would like to tell you about the Wildlife Learning Center. We
saw the Fennec fox and researched about them. They are small and they are
mammals. Here are some facts:
location: Africa, Habitat: deserts, Kingdom: Animalia, Family:
Canidae.
At the mission, we had fun at the church. It was cool and very nicely decorated.
We saw a water fountain and small waterfall at the garden.
The buildings were historical adobe with rounded entry ways. We saw real gold
in the mission chambers and rooms.
We had so much fun learning and playing on the field trips this week.
The Fiesta was fun too!

Through Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms in Santa Clarita, Drought Continues
By Jessica Boyer
The Santa Clarita Valley received rain,
thunderstorms and lightning this past weekend,
bringing in more than an inch of rain.
National Weather Service officials recorded about
1.33 inches of rainfall between Saturday and
Monday.
Thunderstorms and lightning caused power outages
all over Los Angeles County, including the KHTS
AM-1220 office and other offices along Main Street
in Newhall after lightning struck a power pole.
While the Santa Clarita Valley was doused during
the storm, water officials say the valley, and the state,
needs more water to get out of the drought.
“The rain is very welcomed. It reduces some water
demand and one of the things folks should know is
that one of the things prohibited by the State Water
Resources Control Board is watering within 48 hours
of rain,” said Dirk Marks.
“The rain is good news but it certainly is not the end
of the drought,” Marks said. “In Santa Clarita the
average is about 17 inches per year. We’ve received
about 6 inches so far.”
National Weather Service Los Angeles, Oxnard
officials released a hazardous outlook report for
the southwest part of the state, including the Santa
Clarita Valley, that was in effect until Monday night.

BRIDGE BITES from The American Contract Bridge League
THE MERRIMAC COUP
By: Brian Gunnell
week’s coup got its exotic name. For the rest of us there is Google.
Against 3NT, West leads his 4th best Heart, and routine defense by East is to win the
Ace and return the Jack. Declarer’s King wins that and Clubs are played. East can
take his ♣A when he likes, West gets a couple of Hearts, but that is all there is for the
defense. 9 tricks for Declarer.

East
Let’s replay the hand, this time with a wide-awake East at the table. He can see those
ominous Clubs in Dummy and must knock out the ♠A before Declarer can set up the
Clubs. That’s right, a Spade shift is required at Trick 2. But shifting to the ♠J does not
get the job done. Declarer will hop up with her Queen, saving Dummy’s ♠A entry for
later. What is needed is the spectacular shift to the ♠K, that does knock out Dummy’s
entry (if the ♠K is ducked then East simply continues with another Spade). Nicely done!
to set the contract.
♦ JT8
♣ A54
Of course, after the ♠A has been dislodged, East must keep up the good work by ducking one round of Clubs, in order to complete the job of shutting out the Club suit. Why
not duck a second round in case Declarer started with three Clubs? West will help out
that West started with an odd number of Clubs and therefore that Declarer does not
have three. Ducking the second Club would be fatal as it happens, allowing Declarer to
scamper home with two Spades, a Heart, four Diamonds and two Clubs.
