On slope for Sochi with this first World Cup event in France! From 9th to 15th December 2013 A FIRST IN FRANCE The iconic biathlete, Sylvie Becaert, retired from sport in 2010 after the Olympic Games in Vancouver. In tribute to her excellent sporting achievements, Le Grand-Bornand decided to christen their new stadium in her name. It was officially opened in 2011. Sylvie has since become ambassador of the World Cup event. This is the first World Cup on French soil and the first event on the World Cup circuit to take place at the heart of an alpine village. A new page in the history of French sport and an emotional moment for many generations that longed for an international event on home ground! The event will take place at the heart of the Le Grand-Bornand, close to the audience and the fans. The resort will beat to the rythmn of the best biathletes in the world. CO N T E N TS Le Grand-Bornand, Annecy and the French Ski Federation join forces to host the best of biathlon. A great occasion to discover a fun and spectacular Nordic discipline in an exceptional setting. On your marks, ski, fire! Amongst them, the French team, so successful at the last Olympic Games in Vancouver, winning 6 of the 11 medal up for grabs! As a result the discipline has become extremely popular creating a general desire to discover the sport. The French athletes are aware of this wonderful opportunity to compete at home, a chance to race for victory in front of their home crowd. Led by Martin Fourcade, already a legend in his own, this talented group continues to progress in the tailwinds of Raphaël Poirée, Florence Baverel, Vincent Defrasne and Vincent Jay. Their main objective this season, the Olympic Games in Sochi in February 2014. To celebrate the event, the resort will host the biggest ever biathlon party. Its success is guaranteed by the tandem Annecy - Le Grand-Bornand, a team that have so often proved their capacity to organize great sporting events such as the IBU Cup in 2011 and the World Military Games in 2013. Annecy and Le GrandBornand are also the only two resorts in the Savoie region to host the 100th Tour de France in July See you in December! /3/ Philippe Angelloz-Nicoud UNITED IN FORCE Michel Vion Mayor of Le Grand-Bornand and President of the Organizing Committee President of the French Ski Federation The story began when one of the 15 largest alpine resorts in France, Le Grand-Bornand, and the internationally renowned town of Annecy, joined forces to offer France its first biathlon World Cup. An event backed by the French Ski Federation and the International Biathlon Union. " I'm always pleased when a World Cup event takes place on French soil but I am all the more delighted for the biathlon World Cup in Annecy - Le GrandBornand, the first ever biathlon World Cup to be organized in France. My joy and my impatience are all the greater as our biathlon team is one of the best in the world. This event will serve as a trial for the Sochi games and no doubt confirm the development of the discipline. " " Biathlon and Le Grand-Bornand is a story that dates back in time. In 1995, for the first time in history, Le Grand-Bornand hosted the European Biathlon Championships at the heart of the village. In 2011, in the new international stadium named after our Olympic medallist, Sylvie Becaert, Le Grand-Bornand organized the finals of the IBU Cup. They were a popular success and I remain convinced that the locals will rise to the challenge of the World Cup with the same enthusiasm and passion for which they are renowned. Norbert Baier Ex-President of the IBU Technical Committee and Technical delegate during the World Cup in Le Grand-Bornand " I'm sure that the gods of snow will be with us for this edition! The Organizing Committee has been greatly approved by the IBU and the World Cup promises to be a real success. A town, a resort and an entire region will create a memorable event for both athletes and coaches. " Town Mayor of Annecy " I'm delighted to host this biathlon World Cup. For an alpine town such as Annecy, it is absolutely necessary to associate ourselves with a major winter sports event and lend our experience to Le Grand-Bornand, a resort with which we are extremely complementary. We thus combine the advantages of a large town with the attractions of an authentic mountain village. Annecy is committed to the values conveyed by sport: social integration, life in a community and respect for others. It is for this very reason that we also invest great sums to ensure that all locals have the opportunity to practice sport from a very early age. With my colleagues from Annecy, the President of the French Ski Federation, the commanding officers of the 27th Battalion and Sylvie Becaert, we work together at the core of the Organization Committee to succeed in this historic event and ensure the duration of this World Cup in Le Grand-Bornand. I also wish to underline the participation of more than 40 towns and villages in the region that are actively and voluntarily involved in the success of this event with the participation of over 500 volunteers. A great project for the entire region." Martin Fourcade 1st twice in the overall World Cup rankings and five-times World Champion " The older members of the French team dreamt of this event and we want to honour their dream by seizing this fabulous opportunity. The entire French team intends to shine in Sylvie Becaert’s home town. For me this event is, without a doubt, the most important competition this coming winter with the Olympic games in Sochi! Thousands of French supporters will be here to encourage us. Our relationship with the public makes us even stronger. " In parallel to supporting local sports clubs, investing in sports facilities and local associations, sport in schools and sports entertainment, the town of Annecy has also chosen to invest in the organization of important sports events. Beyond the participants and numerous spectators attracted by this type of event (contributing to the vitality of Annecy), events like these also mobilize a number of volunteers, a great force for our region. This World Cup event will once again demonstrate this and I sincerley hope that the weather is good to help make this event a popular and sporting success. " /4/ /5/ WHAT’S ON THE PROGRAMME?
