Auerbach ©Stephen Collector annual report 2014 letter from board president As I complete my sixth and final year on the Board of Directors, this past year as president, I am proud of what CCA has accomplished and excited about the Colorado Chautauqua’s bright future. My colleagues on the board and I are honored to help advance the mission of the Colorado Chautauqua Association (CCA) through the implementation of strategies to ensure a sustainable future for the Colorado Chautauqua— physically, programmatically, environmentally and financially—consistent with the CCA mission to preserve, perpetuate and improve the site and spirit of the historic Chautauqua. I am pleased to report that CCA ended 2014 in strong financial position, completed many capital projects and made great strides towards future improvement projects that will benefit all visitors. Enhanced safety, accessibility and an enriched guest experience were primary goals. As a result of a collaboration with the City of Boulder, new ADA accessible restrooms to serve the Auditorium are coming to fruition in June 2015. Thanks to City of Boulder voters’ approval of Ballot Issue 2A (“Community-Culture-Safety”) last November, sidewalks and wayfinding lighting for improved pedestrian safety are on the horizon. Other significant capital projects completed in 2014 included restoration work to the Auditorium’s north staircase and, in collaboration with the Dining Hall operator Three Leaf Concepts, refurbishment of Cottage 100 into the Chautauqua General Store. Additionally, CCA’s year-round programming continued to attract audiences of all demographics. None of these accomplishments would be possible without the generous support of the community and ongoing collaboration with our partners at the City of Boulder. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve the Colorado Chautauqua and the community it serves. Please join me in supporting the Colorado Chautauqua Association in its stewardship to ensure Chautauqua’s vibrant and sustainable future. ©Jamie ©Benko Photographics mission statement statement of values The mission of the Colorado Chautauqua Association is to preserve, perpetuate and improve the site and spirit of the historic Chautauqua by enhancing its community and values through cultural, educational, social and recreational experiences. The Chautauqua experience is based on lifelong learning, love of nature, voluntary simplicity and music, oration and the arts. Historic significance, traditions, cultural relevance, respite and enrichment are among the community benefits provided by the Colorado Chautauqua. Phil Shull President, Board of Directors Colorado Chautauqua Association letter from the executive director Dear Friends, As steward of this beautiful National Historic Landmark, the Colorado Chautauqua Association (CCA) has had another memorable and productive year—providing the community with many opportunities for respite and to “escape, engage and elevate.” As I begin my twelfth year as Executive Director and reflect on the many services and programs CCA has provided to the community over the past decade, I am honored to be associated with something so special; to be entrusted with stewardship of the site and the spirit, and to get to be part of ensuring Chautauqua’s sustainable future! Our board and staff are dedicated to continuously improving internal operations and services that evolve with changing technology and customer expectations while maintaining the physical campus to look and function little differently than it did decades ago. The few changes are subtle and appropriate—they do not detract from the historic character, which remains distinct. As we continue to work to secure a sustainable future for Chautauqua for the next 30 years, our intent is that visitors to the site do not distinguish old from new, as there is a natural and organic-feeling melding of the two. Chautauqua’s progress and sustainability could not be possible without the generous support of our greater Chautauqua community, of members and donors, lodging and dining guests, concert goers, frequent and infrequent visitors. Thank YOU for enabling us create memorable experiences year after year. Thank you to our collaborators at the Chautauqua Dining Hall and Colorado Music Festival, our generous donors, sponsors and members. There are many people to thank at the City of Boulder (CCA’s landlord—but more importantly, our partner)—Mayor Matt Appelbaum and the City Council, City Manager Jane Brautigam and her staff, the Landmarks Board and staff, the Parks and Recreation Department, the Open Space and Mountain Parks Department, Public Works/Transportation, Community Planning and Sustainability and the City Attorney’s Office. I add my personal thanks to the CCA Board of Directors for its dedication and support, and to our tireless and devoted staff who make it all happen every day of every year. I invite you to join us in celebrating our wonderful community jewel and supporting its vibrant future. Sincerely, ©Werner R. Slocum Susan Connelly Executive Director Colorado Chautauqua Association susan.connelly@chautauqua.com ©Benko Photographics Colorado Chautauqua Association | Annual Report 2014 | 5 accomplishments Preservation & Sustainability Preservation and maintenance of Auditorium Chautauqua’s 67 historic buildings and 20+ acres of grounds for active year-round use is a fundamental part of the Colorado Chautauqua Association’s (CCA) daily stewardship activities. CCA invests approximately one million dollars annually in capital improvements and routine maintenance within its leasehold portion of the Colorado Chautauqua National Historic Landmark. Chautauqua General Store Located just west of the Dining Hall, Cottage 100 has served Chautauqua guests in many different capacities since its construction in 1899. The new Chautauqua General Store in Cottage 100 opened its doors in May 2014. Hikers, local families and Chautauqua guests enjoyed homemade ice cream, including flavors such as mint chocolate chip made with real mint, vegan peanut butter chocolate chip, and refreshing orange sherbet, as well as an offering of coffee drinks, teas, chai, grab-andgo snacks and freshly baked pastries. Overnight guests and tourists also picked up gifts, memorabilia and forgotten travel sundries. The General Store is open seasonally May 1 through September. For over a century, the Chautauqua Auditorium has held a special place in the hearts of performers and audiences. Each year, routine upkeep and scheduled capital improvement projects ensure that the beloved building remains in top condition and ready to welcome all who visit. Prior to the start of the 2014 summer season, the Auditorium underwent a spring spruce up. Projects included carpentry repair and fresh paint on the exterior, restoration of the north concrete staircase, restoration of one of the historic stone pillars—an element of the original “promenade,” and rehabilitation of wood components in 436 audience seats. Cottages & Lodges Other major capital improvements for 2014 included the complete rehabilitation of two cottages. ©Werner R. Slocum Rehabilitation work on cottages 13 and 219 included many projects such as insulation of crawl space and attic, reconstruction of a deteriorated foundation, reconstruction of a flagstone patio, remodel of kitchens and bathrooms, upgrade of electrical service and outdated wiring and plumbing, installation of a tankless water heater and complete painting of all interior and exterior surfaces. Colorado Chautauqua Association | Annual Report 2014 | 7 Environmental Sustainability The Chautauqua values of lifelong learning, love of nature and voluntary simplicity go hand-in-hand with environmental sustainability. ©Werner R. Slocum ©Stephen Collector In 2008, the Colorado Chautauqua Association committed to making the Colorado Chautauqua the country’s “greenest” National Historic Landmark. Since then, CCA has made sweeping changes to the way it operates and continues to explore strategies to conserve water and energy, divert waste from landfills and utilize earth-friendly products, while preserving the guest experience and the Colorado Chautauqua’s historic character. THE GUEST EXPERIENCE Overnight guests may notice differences from the typical vacation destination. For example, Chautauqua cottages are equipped with composting and recycling containers, water-saving shower heads, faucets and toilets, ecofriendly soaps and hair products and alternative cooling systems. Bath towels and other linens are exchanged upon request, rather than changed daily. The gift shops found in the Lodging office and the General Store offer earth-friendly products featuring organically grown fibers, non-toxic BPA-free materials and environmentally sound production processes. ENERGY Energy conservation is one of CCA’s highest priorities. As a general rule, whenever an appliance, furnace or water heater needs to be replaced, the most energy-efficient option that meets the need is selected. This includes on-demand water heaters as well as other Energy Star rated products. Light bulbs with low- energy compact florescent lights (CFL) have been systematically installed wherever safe and effective and CCA is experimenting with high efficiency LED lights. All cottages are strategically air sealed and insulated to reduce energy use and increase year-round comfort. A number of strategies have been employed for summer comfort in cottages and community buildings, including solar reflective window screens, whole-house fans, ceiling fans, and high-efficiency alternative cooling systems like the Coolerado in the Academic Hall and Community House. Significant energy efficiency upgrades also have been made to the historic Dining Hall. The Colorado Chautauqua is recognized as a national leader in the application of energy efficiency and green construction techniques in historic building renovation. As part of its Learning Laboratory, CCA compiles case studies and valuable data, and shares its learnings with home owners, the historic preservation community and the green building industry. WATER Water is precious in Boulder’s highdesert climate and CCA is conscious of every drop used. In addition to water saving fixtures in buildings, weather monitors have been incorporated into irrigation systems throughout the grounds. These monitors evaluate factors such as temperature, relative humidity, wind and precipitation, so water is used only as much, and as often, as necessary. This practice has resulted in a reduction of outdoor water use by as much as 40 percent annually since initial implementation in 2010. WASTE With a goal to reduce its waste stream to a mere trickle, CCA makes every effort to reduce, reuse and recycle. All yard and tree trimmings are collected and converted to mulch to be used in our gardens and flower beds. When renovating historic buildings, reclaimed building materials are used to the extent possible, diverting 65 percent of construction waste from landfills through recycling and re-use. Approximately 75 percent of overnight guests participate in a voluntary compost program and the Dining Hall operator converts much of its food waste into feed for its farm animals. HOP 2 CHAUTAUQUA CCA encourages all visitors to reduce their environmental footprint and celebrates their efforts. In 2014, nearly 4,000 concert patrons chose to ride the free HOP 2 Chautauqua to the Chautauqua and Colorado Music Festival. Available on Auditorium concert nights, the free transit service runs every 15-20 minutes from approximately two hours prior to show time to 45 minutes after the end of each show. HOP 2 Chautauqua is operated by VIA Mobility Services and funded by GO Boulder/City of Boulder, CCA and Colorado Music Festival. For more information, visit www.chautauqua.com/HOP. Colorado Chautauqua Association | Annual Report 2014 | 9 Safety Accessibility Thanks go to City of Boulder voters who overwhelmingly passed Ballot Issue 2A (“Community-Culture-Safety”), a short-term sales tax increase for specific capital projects throughout the City. These funds will enable the City to add a new sidewalk on the south side of Baseline Road and to light the sidewalks between the Auditorium and Baseline and between the Dining Hall and the lower tennis court parking lot. Both projects have been on CCA’s wish list for years and will greatly improve access and safety for users of the park, the historic campus and adjacent open space trails. ADA ACCESSIBLE RESTROOMS Through collaboration with the City of Boulder, construction is underway for ADA accessible restrooms to serve the Auditorium. This restroom project, managed and funded by the City of Boulder, will feature a six stall restroom with ADA accessible accommodations for both men and women. The restrooms will be completed in lateJune, weather permitting, and will be open in conjunction with Auditorium use. Archives COLORADO CHAUTAUQUA OPENS DIGITAL ARCHIVE TO THE PUBLIC The archive collection at the Colorado Chautauqua consists of approximately 5,000 inventoried items of historic records dating back to the inception of the chautauqua in 1898. The archive’s content ranges from photographs and marketing materials to extensive information on buildings, grounds and organization operations. Housed at the National Historic Landmark since its inception, the archive had been previously inaccessible to the public. As part of a pilot project to gauge community interest, a portion of the collection has been digitized with a sampling of historical photographs and printed materials now available for viewing on CCA’s website. The online exhibit includes items such as photographs showing the Auditorium’s original bleachers and dirt floor, program brochures from the early 1900’s and the first program from 1898 as well as more modern posters that capture speakers such as the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Visitors to the website who have additional questions are invited to complete an online Ask the Archivist form. The cataloguing and partial digitization of the archive collection has been underway for the past two years, and can be viewed at chautauqua. com/preservation/archives. ©Benko Photographics Colorado Chautauqua Association | Annual Report 2014 | 11 accomplishments Arts & Culture cultural residency Since July 4, 1898, people have traveled long distances to have a chautauqua experience in Boulder. Initially a tent city, seasonal cottages and lodges were built and rebuilt at Chautauqua over time. The result was a unique neighborhood that, for its first century, was primarily for summer use only. Today, 57 cottages and the Missions House and Columbine Lodges are available for nightly rental year-round. All of the cottages and lodges at Chautauqua have been lovingly upgraded to be as energy efficient and ©Benko Photographics comfortable as possible. Five cottages are EPA Energy Star-rated, indicating achievement of the highest standards in energy efficiency. Not only is staying in a cottage or lodge a fundamental element of the Chautauqua experience, but lodging revenue is the economic engine for CCA. The revenues fund preservation and maintenance activities and subsidize public programming. In 2014, revenue from cultural residency contributed 52 percent of CCA’s total revenue. Each year, Chautauqua hosts overnight guests from around the globe, nationally, regionally, and often locally to participate in the chautauqua experience. Please join us! ©Benko Photographics ©Benko Photographics programming From classical to popular music, silent films to modern dance, authors to actors, and science to theater, 2014 was packed with many memorable Chautauqua experiences. Auditorium programs The 117th Summer Series delivered yet another season of diverse and quality entertainment that the community has come to expect, including artists such as: Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winners and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers B.B. King and Mavis Staples, world musicians Ziggy Marley and Angelique Kidjo, and perennial crowd favorites Andrew Bird, John Hiatt, Marc Cohn, Steve Earle, Hot Rize and Loudon Wainwright III. Spoken word also filled the Auditorium as the wit and wisdom of comedians Paula Poundstone and Steven Wright kept audiences laughing while climatologist Katharine Hayhoe delivered some sobering news about Earth’s future. Silent films with live musical accompaniment lit up the silver screen for the 29th consecutive year. Audiences viewed the history of rock climbing in Yosemite during the sold-out two day premiere of REEL ROCK 9’s “Valley Uprising” and were awestruck and inspired by the incredible athleticism of dancers from Cleo Parker Robinson ©Jonathan B. Auerbach Dance Ensemble and Colorado Hip Hop Society’s presentation of “Murmuration.” An integral part of Chautauqua’s summer programming for more than three decades, the Colorado Music Festival continued to provide six weeks of inspiring, world-class classical music. For the 2015 season, patrons will get to know new Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni’s personal affinity for vocal music. Outside the Auditorium, theater was abundant at Chautauqua. Hikers hit the trails to enjoy Theatre Hikes’ “Alice in Wonderland” and “Three Tales of Poe” while aficionados participated in staged play readings in the Community House. Community House programs Year-round programming in the Chautauqua Community House explored the origins of space, the power of the pen and film, and music diversity in 2014. During the popular and sold out Space Series, audiences were taken on a monthly voyage of discovery through the solar system and outer limits of space and time. Paying homage to the original Chautauqua Literary & Scientific Circle, the monthly Author Series presented thought provoking writers sharing their works of fiction and nonfiction. Authors included Peter Heller unveiling his newest work of science fiction; David Haskell explaining unseen life in the forest; Nicolas Carr discussing technology’s effects on human life; Kristen Iversen revealing the aftereffects of growing up and working in the shadow of Rocky Flats; Paolo Bacigalupi told stories for young readers; James Glanville captured life on the western landscape; and Tarashea Nesbit and Rachel Weaver debuted their first novels. Filmmakers, screenwriters and producers convened at the Community House throughout the year to gather live audience feedback during post screening discussions of their work. These documentaries took the audience on journeys from Colorado ranchlands and the termination of the Colorado River to the highest peaks of Nepal and the unexplored corners of the human mind. Just as attending a concert in the Chautauqua Auditorium is on the summer “must-do” list, Community House concerts have become a favorite amongst fans looking to experience music in an intimate atmosphere. 2014 musicians included Jonathan Richman, Patty Larkin and Gretchen Peters. A grant from the Glenn H. CCA also received additional SCFD funding in excess of budget in the amount of $133,597. Without these two grants, net income would have been $400,000, or $60,659 above 2013 net income of $339,568. donors special thanks director’s circle ($2,500 – 4,999) Glenn H. Korff Foundation In 2014, CCA was the recipient of a very generous grant from the Glenn H. Korff Foundation. This gift will enable CCA to make improvements to the Auditorium over the next three years that will greatly enhance guests’ live music experience. These improvements— unimaginable without this kind and generous grant—will include the installation of a permanent audio system, replacement of acoustic panels above the stage and upgrading all the seats throughout the venue. A fourth generation Nebraskan, Mr. Korff graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1965 with a chemistry degree and was a member and former president of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. His passion for performing arts began on the Nebraska campus as a member of Kosmet Klub, a male musical and comedy ensemble for which he served as a set designer. He received an MBA in finance in 1968 from the University of Pennsylvania and enjoyed a long career in the area of finance and investments, retiring from Goldman Sachs and moving to Boulder, Colorado. Mr. Korff spent much of his Boulder life at his beloved Chautauqua, hiking the trails and enjoying the music in the Auditorium. Mr. Korff was a very private individual, with few requests for recognition, but wanted to make a difference and leave a legacy through his giving, which would create community support and educate others in the importance of philanthropy. Mr. Korff’s legacy of support of the arts, music education and the places he dearly loved will benefit Chautauqua and its visitors for years to come. founders’ circle ($10,000+ ) president’s circle ($5,000 – 9,999) Daily Camera Vernon & Jerry Davidson Family Foundation Flatirons Bank Alfalfa’s Market Kathy & Jim Cargill Holland & Hart LLC Insight Designs Shoemaker, Ghiselli & Schwartz LLC Anonymous Anonymous William L. A Matching Gift Program is an ideal way for a company to demonstrate the importance of supporting the community. Corporate matching can double and often triple the overall contribution that Colorado Chautauqua Association receives on behalf of an individual. Become a part of Colorado Chautauqua’s history by purchasing a commemorative brick, engraved with a personal message and installed along a path in the beautiful Centennial Garden. This is a perfect way to commemorate a birthday or milestone or to honor a special friend or family member. Chautauqua values of voluntary simplicity, lifelong learning, love of nature and music, oration and the arts are relevant and needed in the hectic pace of today’s digital age. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Colorado Chautauqua Association relies on the generosity of the community to help preserve the site and spirit of the historic Chautauqua and enrich the lives of all who visit. Individual or Business Contributions Gifts of any size make a difference. Donor generosity allows CCA to constantly improve the visitor experience of the Colorado Chautauqua’s historic accommodations and event venues, the natural beauty of the 20+ acres of grounds, and the quality and quantity of educational and entertainment programming. Planned Giving Planned giving provides ways to support the Colorado Chautauqua without affecting a donor’s current lifestyle or family’s security. Through planned giving, gifts can be made that cost nothing during the donor’s lifetime and leave cash flow and current financial planning unchanged. Planned giving gifts could include gifts from wills or trusts, retirement plan designations, appreciated securities, life insurance and many more.
