Miller 5 Go farther, with confidence in Medjet U.S. company forms a lifeline between its members, help and safety back at home U Uber-hunter Craig Boddington is not afraid to follow his passion to the very ends of the earth. The host of the Outdoor Channel’s “Tracks Across Africa” and author of more than 20 books on hunting and shooting, Boddington has been on 75 African safaris. Game the outdoor writer has hunted includes Africa’s Big Five, the most dangerous of animals. And, for the last several years, Medjet has had his back. “I am not afraid of the places I go to follow my passion for hunting or the unpredictable paths that take me there,” says Boddington. “I am not afraid of what I am hunting, what might be hunting me, or whatever lies in between. I travel with peace of mind because I know Medjet will be there if I ever need them.” Boddington, who has been a Medjet member for more than five years, is the new spokesman for the premier medical evacuation and repatriation membership program for travelers. “As a widely recognized outdoorsman and unarguably one of this generation’s most accomplished hunting experts, Craig will lend tremendous insight, visibility and credence to our company and services,” says Roy Berger, Medjet president and CEO. “We are delighted to have someone of Craig’s caliber and reputation in the hunting community to represent Medjet.” Established in 1991, Birmingham, Ala.-based Medjet is a worldwide medical evacuation and emergency consultation service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Should members become ill or injured while traveling (no matter what corner of the world they find themselves in), company representatives will establish communication with family and the local attending medical provider to evaluate and begin monitoring the member’s condition. For those requiring inpatient hospitalization, Medjet will initiate medical evacuation and make all the arrangements with the medical personnel at the member’s chosen hospital for a smooth bed-to-bed transition. Medjet affiliates use state-of-the-art aircraft that have all necessary life-saving equipment onboard. Membership Information Annual Membership . . . . . . . . . . . I travel with peace of mind because I know Medjet will be there if I ever need them.” — Craig Boddington “We can’t always prepare for emergencies when traveling; however, Medjet offers peace of mind for those who need it,” says Berger. Without Medjet, international transports to a capable medical facility could exceed $100,000. Domestic medical evacuation services normally average $25,000. With Medjet’s pre-paid annual membership, its benefits have no monetary limit. Annual membership dues are $250 for an individual and $385 for a family, and short-term memberships start at $95. Domesticonly annual membership costs $175 for an individual and $305 for a family. For Boddington, who is willing to travel to virtually any location to pursue his passion for hunting, having Medjet gives him one fewer thing to worry about so he can keep his mind on the hunt. “My passion takes me to the ends of the earth. I’m not sure where you go, but make sure you have Medjet,” he says. “I wouldn’t travel without it.” For information on how to enroll in Medjet, call (800) 527-7478 or visit www.medjet.com/dsc. Powerful, comfortable, mobile — electric I Innovation is what drives Shane Wilson’s business, Titan UTV. The president of the Hutto-based company is part of the emerging electric vehicle industry. An electrical engineer and avid bow hunter, Wilson welcomes the challenge of building a better vehicle by pushing innovative design rather than relying on what’s out there. He says most electric 4x4 builders have tended to take the ubiquitous golf cart model and modify it for hunters. What Titan has done is to engineer its vehicles from the ground up — beginning with its tubular frame and undercarriage — by using off-road racing technology. Others followed this design in 2009. His vehicles are designed to meet 8 Titan UTV rethinks the electric vehicle from batteries to bucket seats the needs of hunters who want that extra power to tromp through fields, mud and brush. His popular Titan Scout 4x4 Electric Vehicle, for example, is a quiet, powerful vehicle that offers such features as four-wheel independent suspension, an independent coil over shock system, four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes, dual controllers and rack and pinion steering. Its high-output dual motors and controllers generate Best in Class horsepower (up to 54 hp). Speaking of first to market with innovation, the Scout Series will have an optional dual motor-dual controller AC drive system. This offers another maintenance-free solution for customers. “AC is the way of the future for electric vehicles, and we wanted to be the first to offer this,” Wilson said. Since his company began making the vehicles three years ago, it has proven to be popular among hunters. So popular that Titan will change its name to Titan EV (Electric Vehicle) in 2010 to better reflect the diversification of its product portfolio. As of 2010, the company will offer six different models, including the new Explorer Series unveiled recently. “I think the Explorer will be our best-selling vehicle,” Wilson said. The new Explorer LSV is the first electric vehicle that offers a four-speed transmission. What the manual transmission will do, Wilson said, is offer better maneuverability on rough off-road terrain. The LSV has plenty of torque and power. And it’s a spacious buggy with four bucket seats, all of which face forward. Plus, it has a rear bed for storage. The Explorer LSV, which can travel about 45 miles per charge in smooth driving conditions, sells for $14,800, fully-loaded. The Explorer LSV is available in two-wheel drive, with the release of a four-wheel drive model planned for August 2010. “But don’t let the two-wheel drive discourage you,” Wilson said. “This vehicle has more torque and horsepower than any other on the market.” Titan also offers an optional solar panel that can be mounted on the Dallas Safari Club 2010 Convention & Sporting Expo electric UTV to extend the driving time up to 20 percent per day. And, because electric vehicles tend to be all about the battery, Wilson will have AGM batteries in all his 2010 vehicles. He is also looking into lithium ion battery technology in his search for more efficient batteries. For more information, visit www. titanutv.com or call (877) 770-4888. In its first five years, SHE has grown from product placement in 17 stores, to nearly 400 nationwide. Major retailers, including Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, L.L. Bean, Gander Mountain and Sportsman’s Warehouse now carry SHE Outdoor Apparel. SHE is also the title sponsor of the highly rated “SHE’s Beyond the Lodge,” airing 52 weeks on the Outdoor Channel (www.beyondthelodge.com). “We have experienced unprecedented growth in a relatively short period of time and want to express our gratitude to all those who have helped us achieve our goals,” said Pam Zaitz, president. “The future is very bright for SHE, as more and more women are introduced to the shooting and hunting sports. We are exploring new venues with the SHE Adventure Collection and look forward to providing women with exciting new choices in outdoor-wear.” Expanded collections include SHE Style, SHE Upland, SHE Camo, SHE Shooting and the newly introduced SHE Adventure Collection. This beautifully designed, colorful line is suitable for her fishing trip or casual vacation. Long, short and sleeveless shirts in white, blue, aqua and pink-camo accompany pants, shorts, skorts and convertible pants in stone and sand colors with rip-stop fabric. The SHE windbreaker is available in sand color and wind-stop fabric. The SHE Adventure Collection features an SPF 30 rating and comes with the company’s embroidered signature “S.” SHE’s team of professional outdoorswomen ensure that every design is field-proven. The designers at SHE work to incorporate the pros’ suggestions into their unique styles, thereby providing consumers with the very best products in fashionable, functional garments. Zaitz incorporated her own experiences and 10 advice from professional hunters Kandi Kisky (Whitetail Freaks TV and North American Whitetail TV) and Vicki Cianciarulo (The Choice TV and Archers Choice TV) and outdoor writer and marketing consultant Brenda Potts (SHE’s Beyond the Lodge TV) to create the SHE C4 System, the most revolutionary cold-weather apparel ever produced for women. “By working with this team of professional outdoorswomen, we were able to incorporate cutting edge ideas into an entire cold-weather system that is waterproof, windproof, warm and quiet,” explained Zaitz. “The jacket, pants, vest and accessories combine 440-gram fleece, Thinsulate and Arctic Shield with body-mapping technology in a stylish less-bulky design that keeps you warm and withstands rugged conditions. We added a patent-pending zipper attachment feature unlike any other on the market that enables you to attach the pants to the vest, creating heat-retaining bibs. The two can be detached and re-attached easily in the field. The pants and vest can also be worn separately if desired.” In 2010, SHE will introduce the C2 System, a lighter version of C4 with the same high standards of performance. Also new for 2010 is the HOTMOCS line, providing a superior, external, over-the-boot heating system guaranteed to keep your feet warm. In 1994, John James Lazzeroni drew a design of what is now the Lazzeroni proprietary cartridge on a white piece of paper. Based on that sketch, he had a run of brass cases made to his specifications. He liked what he saw and shortly after started his Tucson, Ariz., arms company to produce his long magnum proprietary cartridges. A year later, Lazzeroni, who had been building custom rifles based upon Weatherby actions since 1988, introduced the Lazzeroni 2000 series bolt-action hunting rifles to handle his new lineup of Lazzeroni calibers. Today, Lazzeroni makes long magnum cartridges, short magnum cartridges, LazerHead copper bullets and, of course, continues to expand his premium hunting rifle line. “The goal of Lazzeroni has always been to build the finest bolt-action hunting rifles in the world, shooting the fastest cartridges available in their respective calibers,” says Lazzeroni. “Our product lineup today has evolved into something very special, something that comes along only once in a generation.” One product that has attracted a lot of attention in the hunting community is the Lazzeroni Global Hunter rifle, which is available in six models. Based on Lazzeroni’s standard long-action rifle (the L2000ST), the Global Hunter mountain rifle features a precision CNCmachined 17R stainless steel receiver, a stainless steel, match-grade button-barrel and a supercrisp Jewel competition trigger. The metalwork is finished with electroless nickel to withstand harsh weather. A diamond-fluted bolt shaft replaces the previous helical fluting, and the firing pin is now made out of titanium to reduce weight and firing pin lock time. What hunters really appreciate is that 12 John Lazzeroni harvested his moose in Canada. He used his personal Lazzeroni Rifle chambered in the 7.82 (.308) Warbird. this gun weighs about 2 pounds less than its predecessor. The short-magnum model (the L2005SLT), for example, weights 6.1 pounds. The long-magnum (the L2005LLT) comes in at slightly more than 7 pounds. Both have a new slim line graphite-composite stock and precision-machined aluminum-alloy floorplate/ trigger guard assembly. Whatever the model, these guns — which start at $4,500 — are superbly crafted firearms that are wicked accurate. For an idea of what to expect from his maximum velocity ammunition, go to www.lazzeroni.com and scan the ballistics table under the appropriate cartridge. Lazzeroni has a reputation in the industry for being a perfectionist — not a bad quality for a gunmaker to possess. Perhaps the strongest compliment that can be paid to a manufacturer with Lazzeroni’s exacting standards came from hunter and author Craig Boddington in a 2005 article he wrote for Rifle Shooter magazine: “John Lazzeroni’s products do exactly what he says they will do ... . There is no blue sky — none — in his published velocity figures for his cartridges. History runs deep at ‘America’s Original Game Ranch’ in Texas T The Y.O. Ranch has been a graceful presence in the heart of Hill Country for well over a century. Since Capt. Charles Schreiner founded the ranch in the late 1880s, six generations of Schreiners have tended this beautiful and rugged land. The ranch, located 40 miles west of Kerrville, has thrived during good times and has survived the hard times. It was during one of the not-sogood times that the canny widow Myrtle Schreiner, who took the ranch’s reins in 1933, started leasing some of her lands to hunters. In the years since, several other Texas ranchers have followed suit, but the widow gave the Y.O. a healthy head start in building an international reputation as a superior hunting ranch. When her son Charles Schreiner III took over in the 1950s, he built up a herd of Longhorns, which were then facing extinction, and introduced exotic species of wildlife to the rolling hills of the Y.O. During the 1980s, Louie Schreiner forged the ranch’s reputation as “America’s Original Game Ranch.” Today, 19 members of the Schreiners, led by managing partner Charles Schreiner IV, run the ranch. They are credited for setting new standards in outdoor adventure and hospitality. The Y.O., a working ranch spanning 40,000 acres, is home to more than 1,000 Longhorns, the rangy cattle breed that was the foundation of the empire the first Schreiner built. The 60-square- mile 26 ranch also is the adopted home of more than 10,000 animals, including 50 species of such exotics as antelope, impala, blackbuck, waterbuck, Oryx, giraffe and ostrich. More than 20 of those exotic species originally found in North Africa, China and Europe can be hunted, as can trophy native wildlife. The Hill Country’s Edwards Plateau is home to some of the largest white-tailed deer herds and Rio Grande turkey populations. It is not uncommon to see 50 to 100 bucks in a single day. It is the availability of these trophy animals coupled with the Schreiner hospitality that attracts big game hunters from across the U.S. and from all over the world. The ranch also attracts Texans who want to hunt exotic species without leaving the comfort of their home state. Hunters will have access to experienced guides who will help them enjoy a challenging fair-chase hunt in a politically stable environment. During their visit, they will stay in an 1880s-style log cabin and enjoy Hill Country cooking at the Y.O. Chuckwagon. Lodging and meal fees are $160 per day, with the guide fees running $300 per day plus gratuity. The trophy fees differ, depending on the species being hunted. For hunters, it’s a natural choice. The UTVs will take them off road to areas that a vehicle can’t reach. It’s silent. And, because it doesn’t run on fuel, there are no strong emissions to spook game. “You can go completely undetected into the woods,” says Ben King, president and founder of Martex Global Enterprises. The company manufactures the made-in-the-U.S.A. all-electric HuntVe UTV line. Currently, the HuntVe is available in 12 states. “We have designed it to be the premier vehicle in the market,” says King. Former Dallas Cowboy and avid hunter Jay Novacek has personally endorsed the HuntVe, as have David Hale and Harold Knight of Knight and Hale fame. King credits improvements in technology over the last few years for the growth in this segment of the UTV market. His HuntVe 4x4 Game Changer, for example, can run 20 miles on a single charge in off-road conditions and about 30 miles on smooth terrain. The Game Changer, in fact, offered with a premium package of upgrades has proven to be a bestseller. Selling for $13,999, it comes equipped with a gun rack, 25-inch tires, 3-1 foldout rear seat, and a front basket with a 200-pound capacity. This model also boasts 1,100 amps of power, dual auto-locking differentials, extreme-duty self-adjusting rack and pinion steering, plus more. The HuntVe also comes in a 4x4 and a 2x4 model. The company 28 describes the HuntVe Electric 4x4 vehicle as “undeniably the toughest all-electric four-wheel-drive vehicle on the market to date.” The HuntVe is a rugged, wellconstructed vehicle that can handle any type of terrain that hunters might have to traverse to follow their game. “These vehicles can climb,” says King. And, with a four-wheel hydraulic brake, they allow you to get down safely. The self-adjusting rack and pinion steering combined with unprecedented turning radius also allows hunters to easily maneuver around in the smallest of areas in this comfortable vehicle. The company continues to explore ways to enhance the capabilities of their HuntVe line. Recently, Martex unveiled a new solar-powered charging system that is designed to add up to 30 percent to the drive time of the HuntVe. “It is a significant advancement in solar technology that we are now able to bring to our customers,” says Rick Roe, vice president of operations. Made of durable tempered glass, the solar panels are as tough as an automobile’s windshield. Life expectancy of the panels is designed to match the life of the vehicle.
