A LETTER FROM THE
CHAIRMAN
This was a season that showcased Roundabout’s impact on both the theatre community and the greater community
of New York City. We had more audiences walk through our doors than ever before, reaching more than 600,000
theatregoers; we employed more than 1,100 artists and administrative and theatre staff; and we affected more
than 12,000 public schools students and their teachers representing all five boroughs. Our productions garnered
numerous award nominations, along with critical acclaim. The overall positive response we received is proof that
under the unflagging leadership of Artistic Director Todd Haimes, Managing Director Harold Wolpert, and Executive
Director Julia Levy, Roundabout’s mission was realized on all levels, and with profound success.
As Chairman, I am most proud that we succeeded in balancing artistic excellence and effective community outreach with strong fiscal management. After a
very challenging year the prior season, I am pleased to report that we will end the 2013-14 fiscal year with a surplus. This is all the more remarkable given
that Todd chose plays that represented some of the greatest artistic risks taken by the company – Machinal, The Winslow Boy, and Violet. He balanced those
productions with more popular works that allowed diverse groups of artists the opportunity to revisit Cabaret and Bad Jews, both of which had previously been
staged at Roundabout.
When we accepted the opportunity to manage the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, we planned to produce our own work but also have the ability to rent out the
theatre from time to time. The proceeds from that rental would go back into the not-for-profit purpose of the organization and provide funds to support our
activities, including our work in the NYC public schools, and our efforts to support artists through the Associate Artist and Underground programs. Our current
rental, Beautiful, has been a great success beyond our expectation. Thankfully, it has generated the needed funds to allow us to have an even greater impact
in our community.
Our education department continues to serve students in meaningful ways. This year, the NYC Department of Education brought us into eleven additional
public schools to provide technical theatre education; we are excited to fill this much needed role. We are also proud to work in partnership with the
professional unions, including the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), to provide students with practical knowledge that will offer
them a gateway to a career in theatre. Finally, this year’s Student Theatre Arts Festival was so popular that we moved it into one of our Broadway houses –
the American Airlines Theatre. Over 600 friends and family watched highlights of productions from our eleven partner schools representing all five boroughs.
In recent annual reports, I have mentioned both short- and long-term strategies that were put in place by the Board and management to ensure Roundabout’s
financial strength. I am again very happy to report that those efforts continue. The branding work that was launched last year was extended to include all
our venues. We installed a state-of-the-art digital marquee at the American Airlines Theatre, thanks to the generosity of the City of New York. In the vein of
the immersive style pioneered by Cabaret, we continue to expand the experience for our audiences into the lobbies and beyond, with inventive displays, both
low and high-tech, and even a mobile app for Cabaret which allows patrons to share their experiences online. And finally, thanks to the generosity of so many
supporters, our annual fund campaign has exceeded our goal with more than $13 million in contributed revenue.
I want to mention Mary Solomon, who is stepping down from the Board this year, and thank her for her decade-long service and leadership. Though she will
be missed in the board room, she will always be a part of the Roundabout family. We are happy to welcome as Vice Chairs, Kitty Patterson and Larry Kaplen,
and our new Secretary, Sylvia Golden.
I want to thank all the people who made this season possible: our renewing and new subscribers, our many donors who continue to be so generous with their
support and belief in what we do, the Leadership Council, and of course our staff, artists, and my fellow Board members.
Tom Tuft, Chairman of the Board

A LETTER FROM THE
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
The 2013-14 season was undoubtedly one of Roundabout’s most artistically gratifying, with both audiences and
critics responding with great enthusiasm. That recognition was especially rewarding because we made decisions this
year to take big risks, balancing them with the kind of work I know Roundabout does best. I was proud to see that
balance so beautifully realized, especially in a season that reinforced our commitment to being a home for artists at
all stages of their careers.
After more than four years of trying to bring back Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall’s seminal production of Cabaret, I
can’t tell you how it felt to see that show back onstage at Studio 54. It was the one show in his career that Sam told me he wanted to revisit, and, frankly,
I felt the same way. Sam and Rob were so early in their careers the first time we brought Cabaret to Broadway, and it’s been astounding to watch them
return, now with fifteen more years of life and career experience to deepen their already brilliant work. And of course welcoming Alan Cumming back as the
Emcee, the role that first brought him to the New York stage, is incredibly special for him, for me, and for the audience members who greet him with cheers
each night.
At the American Airlines Theatre, we brought exciting and artistically challenging work to the stage, combining the Broadway premiere of Violet with two
shows, Machinal and The Winslow Boy, that have not been revived on Broadway since their 1928 and 1947 premieres. The Winslow Boy had long been
on my wish list. It’s not an easy play, but with Lindsay Posner’s direction and Roger Rees’ searing central performance, it became one of the best-reviewed
shows of the season. Violet, a modern musical classic, starred the outstanding Sutton Foster and, thanks to Jeanine Tesori, features one of the best scores
in contemporary musical theatre. I loved this show when I first saw it in 1997 off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, and I’m honored to have given it a
much-deserved Broadway debut. To be able to showcase pieces, or allow artists to stretch themselves in ways that the commercial theatre rarely permits, is
really at the heart of what we do. And it was in this spirit that we mounted Just Jim Dale, with the incomparable Jim Dale, an artist with whom we have had
a thirty-year relationship. I was so happy that our audiences were given the opportunity to experience this joyous piece.
We had a production and an opening night that will be remembered for years to come with Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal, starring the extraordinary Rebecca
Hall. The show was a risk in so many ways – a large cast, a little-known playwright, a title no one could pronounce, plus Lyndsey Turner’s vision of a massive
turntable, one more element to put us on uncertain ground. When the turntable broke early during the opening night performance, what initially felt like a
disaster turned into the truest “the show must go on” moment I have ever experienced. The production team came to the rescue directly from the audience,
in their opening night attire. I loved that night, and was so proud of the production, of the artists who brought it to life, and particularly of our Board, who
were supportive of taking on this ambitious project.
This year also marked a first, when we decided to transfer Bad Jews from Roundabout Underground to the Laura Pels Theatre. It became one of our most
successful new plays ever. There is nothing better than the moment young playwrights discover they can make a living with their art, and I’m thrilled to see
Joshua Harmon joining Stephen Karam, Kim Rosenstock, Steven Levenson, and all the writers who debuted with Roundabout Underground and have reached
that milestone.
This season also commemorated the tenth year of the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre. We celebrated with a playreading of our inaugural
production – Lynn Nottage’s Intimate Apparel – featuring the original cast. This great evening allowed us to take a step back and consider all we have
accomplished in the past decade. We set out to create a center of artistic activity, and today, we have achieved that goal. On any given day you can attend
a production in the Pels, see a reading by an emerging writer in the Black Box, or witness teaching artists at work with students in the Education Studio. The
center is a true testament to celebrating artists at all stages.
I also want to touch on a loss we suffered this year – the death of Gene Feist, Roundabout’s Founding Artistic Director. Gene and his family mean a lot to me
personally, and of course to this theatre. I can’t thank him enough for entrusting Roundabout to me.
This was a season of ambitious work, both celebrating our past and looking ahead with exciting new voices. Roundabout’s Board and staff rose to every
challenge throughout the year, and I am so thankful for their efforts.
Todd Haimes, Artistic Director

THE CLASSICS
Roundabout places classic plays and musicals at the center of its
mission and programming. Since its opening season in 1966,
Roundabout has produced more than 200 play revivals and brought
nearly one-third of all Broadway musical revivals to the stage,
concentrating on works that generally would not be produced in
the commercial theatre. Roundabout classic plays and musicals
are synonymous with high production values, unique artistic
collaborations, and accessibility. The productions invite audiences of
all backgrounds to engage in a dialogue between the world of the
play and their personal experience.

NEW WORKS
Roundabout’s New Play Initiative cultivates new work by gifted
playwrights at all stages of their careers through a three-pronged
development process consisting of commissions of new works,
developmental readings and workshops, and productions of new
works through our Roundabout Underground program. These shows
are an essential part of our future as we work to build relationships
with writers and directors to develop and debut works that will
contribute to the American theatre canon.

READINGS AND WORKSHOPS
Playreadings further our commitment to cultivating new plays and musicals, to re-working the classics, and
to giving developmental opportunities to our artists. Friends of Roundabout playreadings provide artists with
the opportunity to have their work performed before an enthusiastic audience and give Roundabout donors
the unique opportunity of experiencing theatre in the early stages of the development process.
Artistic Workshops provide an intensive forum in which playwrights, composers, lyricists, and directors can
test works in front of a small group of their peers. We depend on our Associate Artists at Roundabout to
help drive these readings.
Finally, the Underground Reading Series showcases up-and-coming playwrights during a weeklong series in
our Black Box. The following playreadings were produced during Roundabout’s 2013-14 season.
Readings and workshops are supported, in part, by the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation.

This season, Access Roundabout distributed over 39,000 deeply discounted tickets through the following initiatives:
ROUNDABOUT UNDERGROUND
All tickets to productions in Roundabout’s 62-seat Black Box Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre are $20. By providing opportunities to see affordable quality theatre, Roundabout cultivates an audience of thoughtful and adventurous theatre-goers, with nearly 40% of attendees visiting Roundabout Underground this season being new to Roundabout Theatre Company.
HIPTIX
Roundabout’s low-price ticket program for young adults ages 18-35 continues to build loyalty in the next
generation of theatre-goers and cultural consumers. Throughout 2013-14, enrollment in the Hiptix program increased to over 55,000 members – a 30% growth from last season.

Through this low price initiative, Roundabout allocates a number of $10 tickets to the first four preview
performances at each of its venues. Through targeted outreach, our number of Access10 ticket buyers
who were brand new to Roundabout increased nearly 30% from the 2012-13 Season.
GENERAL/STUDENT RUSH
Roundabout offers significantly discounted tickets to students and the general public on
the day of the performance. Cabaret, in particular, proved to be a hot ticket, with over
3,600 ticket buyers showing up to the box office to take advantage of the discount
price on a popular show.

ENGAGING LOYAL AUDIENCES
Roundabout’s approach to audience engagement is reflected in our brand philosophy It’s About You. The
audience is at the heart of this philosophy, and Roundabout seeks to engage with audiences through a
variety of initiatives including pre- and post-theatre events and thematic talkbacks, in-venue displays and
activities, and social media content and promotions that enhance the experience of our shows and mission.
BAD JEWS – WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON?
This season’s first in-venue experience encouraged Roundabout audiences to engage with
our production of Bad Jews. Capitalizing on the contrasting views presented throughout
the play, audience members were invited to choose which character they sided with –
the fiercely conservative Daphna or confidently liberal Liam. The great debate occurred
both in the theatre and throughout Roundabout’s social channels, ensuring audiences’
continued interaction with the production throughout its extended run.
VIOLET - #INSPIREDBYVIOLET PHOTO CONTEST
Taking inspiration from Violet’s journey,
Roundabout launched an online contest
asking audience members to submit a photo
and short story of an important journey in
their life. Spreading word of the contest
through social media and within in-venue
printed materials, fans began to share
their inspirational and often emotional travel
experiences. By a tally of votes, the winner –
a woman who just happened to be named
The winning
Violet – was awarded a Grand Prize travel
photo taken by
voucher from American Airlines.

IN THE COMMUNITY
ROUNDABOUT ARCHIVES
In 2008, Roundabout received dedicated funding from the Leon Levy Foundation to establish a permanent
archive to systematically identify and preserve artifacts and documents that tell our unique theatre story. The
archives’ mission is to capture materials from our productions and our output as a not-for-profit institution,
including the many unique events and milestones we consistently celebrate.
One of the more unique stories to be added to our archive is our seminal production of Cabaret. Mounted
first in 1998, the production was revived again in 2014. In order to bring Studio 54 back to the gritty
cabaret originally designed for our first production, we had to undertake months of renovations in order to
transform the space back into the Kit Kat Klub. Recording the transformation using time-lapse photography
allowed us to document the renovation and share it with audiences. But more importantly, it provides a
historic document that future theatre practitioners and scholars will use to inform their understanding of this
important musical and our company’s commitment to the genre. By retaining and preserving documents
such as these, we create a window into theatre history not only for our generation but for those to come.

Spring Gala 2014
SPRING GALA 2014
On March 10, 2014, we recognized the artistic achievements of award-winning director Sam Mendes by
honoring him with the Jason Robards Award for Excellence in Theatre at Spring Gala 2014: In Here, Life
is Beautiful. We first met Sam in 1995 when we began initial meetings to bring his inventive and unique
production of Cabaret from London’s Donmar Warehouse to Broadway. We opened in March 1998, and
the spectacular production played until 2004. Sam’s unique gift as a storyteller has only strengthened in the
years he has since spent directing a trove of film and theatre. To have Sam bring the show back this year
is an unparalleled opportunity to share a true treasure of the American musical theatre canon with a new
generation of audiences.
The Spring Gala was an absolute success, raising over $2.8 million to support Roundabout’s Musical
Theatre Fund and education programs. Special thanks to our gala leadership led by Co-Chairs Jeanne
Hagerty and Johannes (Johs) Worsoe, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, and our Vice Chairs – The Alec
Baldwin Foundation; Bill Borrelle & John Hearn; Barbara Broccoli & Michael G. Wilson; Mary CirilloGoldberg & Jay Goldberg; Michael T. Cohen, Colliers International NY LLC; Jodi & Dan Glucksman;
Sylvia Golden; Kiendl & John Gordon; Stephanie & Ron Kramer; Lisa & Gregg Rechler; Janet & Marvin
Rosen; Diane & Tom Tuft. Finally, we thank our Auction Chair Sylvia Golden, Auction Vice Chair Janis Ing
Strauss, and Journal Chairs Henry Cooperman and Steven Schroko.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF
THE STEINBERG CENTER
INTIMATE APPAREL: A BENEFIT READING
Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of
the Harold & Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre
In March 2004, Roundabout opened the Harold and Miriam Steinberg
Center for Theatre, home to the Laura Pels Theatre. We aimed to create
a hub of activity where diverse artists could be found making theatre
on multiple floors at any time. Today, that dream has become a reality
with the creation of the Black Box Theatre in 2007 and the Education
Studio in 2013. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Steinberg
Center, we held a Benefit Reading of the show that originally opened
the Center – Lynn Nottage’s Intimate Apparel. Roundabout was
pleased to welcome back cast member Viola Davis, director Daniel
Sullivan, and the rest of the original cast for this 10th Anniversary
Benefit Reading. The evening was made possible by The Laura Pels
International Foundation for Theater, Carole and Ted Krumland, The
Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, Lead Sponsor Cynthia
Neiditch, Counsel Abstract, Inc, and all of the benefit donors who
helped raise $150,000 for the New Play Initiative.

OUR SUPPORTERS
The following pages acknowledge our dedicated supporters who give generously each year, making possible
Roundabout’s work onstage and in the community. Each year we must raise over 30% of our annual budget.
This list reflects cumulative annual giving, including contributions to our special events and other campaigns
during the 2013-2014 season. We extend our deepest gratitude to those listed here and to the thousands of
contributors to our Friends of Roundabout program who cannot be listed due to space limitations.
We thank members of the Artistic
Director’s Circle, as well as
our Chairman’s Circle and our
institutional donors, who make
Roundabout’s diverse programming
possible. These donors help fund
our Broadway and off-Broadway
productions and our many not-forprofit initiatives, including Education
programs, the New Play Initiative,
and Access Roundabout, which keeps
ticket prices affordable for
all audiences.
