Welcome to Week 7 Term 2.
Scaffolding – You will notice large amounts of scaffolding around our wooden
building. There will be limited access for students and parents until the work on
our roof is completed – hopefully early next week. Please be mindful of the
restrictions.
Lantern Parade – This year we have made the decision to walk in the Lismore
lantern parade – any student or parent who would like to walk with us is very
welcome. Next Wednesday 15th June all students will be making a lantern here
at school – this has been very kindly supported by our wonderful P&C. We will
also be using these lanterns in our Performing Arts Festival item next term. We
would love to have as many parent helpers next Wednesday as possible. If you
can possibly spare some time to come and help students make the lanterns
next Wednesday we would really appreciate it. I imagine it will take quite some
time and go for most of the day.
Performing Arts Festival & School Concert – next term we have the Performing
Arts Festival and our school concert. Preparation has already begun. Our item at
the Performing Arts Festival will involve the whole school and many of our
lanterns this year which is a massive task. We have chosen to do ‘Alice in
Wonderland’ for our school concert. We are very excited – hope you have the
date in your calendar: Wednesday 21st September.

Music Program – last year and most of this year we have had the privilege of having a specialist music teacher –
Jill Adams - as part of our school program. This has been a wonderful experience for our students. After much
discussion we have had to cease the program with Jill. Financially it was a big cost for our school and then we
looked at the talent we already have amongst our staff. Mrs Overton and Mrs Elms will be taking the K-2 choir.
Mr Henderson will be taking the Year 3-6 choir and Mrs Sweeney the dance. We would really like to thank Jill for
her time with us and her expertise in so many areas. We intend keeping in contact and there may be times
when Jill will be working back here with us again.
Dreamworld – Kindergarten to Year 4 students are getting very excited about their special day. Please make
sure all notes and money are returned as soon as possible. I know that quite a few parents are going as well. It is
going to be wonderful. Please think of us down in the Canberra cold – in fact I think that is the day we will be in
the snow.
Movies – Thursday 16th June 10 a.m. – Please make sure you have returned permission notes and money. This
movie day has been linked to our Positive Behaviour for Learning this term and I am very pleased to say that
nearly all of our students will be able to attend. Thank you to all of those students who have been displaying
fairness, safety and learning every day.
Parent/Teacher Interviews/Reports – the Year 5/6 reports will be going home next week. Attached to this
newsletter are interview times which Mrs Burley and I would like to do the week before the Canberra Excursion.
Please fill in the sheet and send these back as soon as possible. All other reports – Kindergarten to Year 4 – will
go home with the next newsletter and interview times will be in the last week of term. Please make sure to
return the interview sheets. It is really important that we meet to discuss your child’s progress.
Athletics Carnival Friday 24th June – Green Grubs & Red Rovers are ready to battle it out once again at our
annual athletics carnival. I hope parents/carers are also getting fit for the annual tug-of-war challenge and the
parent race. This is a wonderful community day and we hope to see as many green and red families as possible.
There will be a sausage sizzle on the day – bring your picnic blanket and goodies and I will try to guarantee that
this year the weather will be kinder to us.
Year 5/6 Canberra Excursion – All excursion payments must be completed before Friday 24th June. Hoodies
have been ordered and hopefully everyone is getting their warm gear together. Not long to go now.
Friday Assemblies are held fortnightly. The next assembly is this Friday 10th June commencing at 12:45 p.m.
Students are encouraged to borrow from our School Library every Thursday. All students need a library bag for
borrowing.

Chess Tournament
On Wednesday we had 15 students travel to Modanville for the Big Scrub Chess Challenge.
For all of these students it was their first experience of tournament style chess and it was a
wonderful opportunity to test out their skills. They played 9 social rounds or 10 competitive rounds
throughout the day, which was a huge effort considering the concentration required.
Congratulations to Jarrah, Justin, Connor D, Christian, Kobie, Thomas M, Kiah, Skye, Lily Jung, Lillie
Hepburn, Ginger, Jaiden, Tye, Hayden and Maddison. You all represented Caniaba proudly and
although the standard was very high I was impressed with your resilience and enthusiasm.
A special mention to Kiah and Jarrah for winning 5 of their games. Well done kids!
Gavin Henderson, Coordinator.
