Status
AHTF on the Sunscreen Monograph: This task force was
appointed to coordinate the Academy’s response to the longawaited FDA sunscreen monograph issued on August 27,
2007. The AHTF drafted a written response to the FDA on
several points of the proposed amendment to the sunscreen
final rule that was Board-approved and submitted on November
2, 2007. The AHTF was invited by the Personal Care Products
Council (PCPC; formerly the Cosmetics, Toiletry and Fragrance
Association) to discuss each organizations responses to the
FDA monograph in November 2007, and continues to
contribute to dialogue between the Academy and PCPC in
support of common educational goals regarding the use of
sunscreen.

As of March 2010, the AHTF is awaiting FDA finalization of the
sunscreen monograph which is currently estimated for May
2010.

As of October 2010, the AHTF is awaiting FDA finalization of
the sunscreen monograph which is expected sometime this
month.

The AHTF has been working with staff to prepare written and
oral testimony for Dr. James to present on March 25. Working
with staff, the TF identified and invited 23 physicians and 2
patient advocates to participate in the hearing. The AHTF will
host a conference call for all speakers on Thursday, March 18
and provide a pre-briefing on March 24.
