I invite you to join me at our Archdiocesan Parish Leadership Day on Saturday,
February 26, 2011, at Maria High School. Grateful for the sacrifice of your valuable time
that I know participating in this event will require, I believe you will find it to be time
well spent.
In the communion of the Church, we live in relationship to Christ and, in Him, to
one another. The life that we receive from the Lord is made visible in our relationships
when the gifts that He gives us are shared, and I am deeply grateful to you and to all the
generous people whose selfless contributions to the vitality of their parishes strengthen
that ecclesial communion.
Parish Leadership Day is an opportunity for you to join with parish leaders from
all over the Archdiocese for a time of education, fellowship, and encouragement. Many

Leadership Day will be Our Church: Ever Ancient, Ever New.

parishioners from around the Archdiocese of Chicago at Parish Leadership Day on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at
Maria High School, 6727 S. California Avenue in Chicago. NOTE that parking is limited; get to know your neighbors
and rent a bus or car pool! Our theme this year is – Our Church: Ever Ancient, Ever New. Parish Leadership Day is
a great opportunity for parish staffs and parishioners to gather together to pray and gain new knowledge and skills to
transform their parishes and society.

is beneficial to your parish to send as large a group of people as possible to Parish Leadership Day. This day can
help make a greater difference in the life of a parish when a number of people attend and share their stories of
inspiration and learning. We encourage parish groups to attend different workshops in order to multiply their

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS FOR PARISH LEADERSHIP DAY 2011
English Keynote Speaker
Rev. Donald Senior, CP
Fr. Senior is President of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, the largest Roman Catholic graduate school of ministry in
the United States, where he is also a member of the faculty as Professor of New Testament. Born in Philadelphia in 1940,
he is a member of the Passionist Congregation and was ordained a priest in 1967. He received his doctorate in New
Testament studies from the University of Louvain in Belgium in 1972. He is a frequent lecturer and speaker throughout the
United States and abroad, and serves on numerous boards and commissions.
Fr. Senior has published extensively on biblical topics, with numerous books and articles for both scholarly and popular
audiences. He is the general editor of the acclaimed Catholic Study Bible (Oxford University Press, rev. ed. 2006) and editor
in chief of the journal, The Bible Today. Among his recent works are a four volume series of studies of the Passion
narratives (The Liturgical Press), a new and expanded edition of his widely read, Jesus A Gospel Portrait (Paulist Press,
rev. ed., 1994), What Are They Saying About Matthew? (Paulist Press, rev. ed., 1996), The Gospel of Matthew (1997) in
Abingdon Press’ Interpreting Biblical Texts series, a full length commentary on the Gospel of Matthew in Abingdon’s New
Testament Commentary series (Matthew. Abingdon Press, 1998), and the volume on I Peter in the Sacra Pagina series
(Liturgical Press, 2003). He is co-editor of The New Interpreters Study Bible (Abingdon Press, 2003).
He was the recipient of the National Catholic Library Association’s 1994 Jerome Award for Outstanding Scholarship and was
given the 1996 National Catholic Education Association’s Bishop Loras Lane Award for outstanding service to Catholic
education. He is past President of the Catholic Biblical Association of America (1997-1998) and of the Association of
Theological Schools of the United States and Canada. In 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him as a member of the
Pontifical Biblical Commission, and Pope Benedict XVI reappointed him in 2006.
Spanish Keynote Speaker
Rev. Marco A. Mercado
Fr. Mercado was born in Morelia Michoacáan México and is the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters. Fr. Mercado
started his Ecclesiastic Studies with the Salesians in México, where he finished his studies in Philosophy and his
Masters in History and Sociology in the Normal Superior de Jalisco in Mexico. Fr. Mercado received his MDiv at
Mundelein Seminary in Chicago and was ordained as a Priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1998. Fr. Mercado
was assigned as Associate Pastor at St. Anthony of Padua in Cicero for four years. He was then assigned as
Associate Pastor at St. Sylvester Parish and after one year Fr. Mercado was assigned to serve as Pastor at Good
Shepherd Parish in Chicago. After eight years as pastor at Good Shepherd, Fr. Mercado was appointed as Director
of Hispanic Ministry of the Archdiocese of Chicago where he presently serves.

Rev. Freddy Washington, CSSp
Fr. Freddy Washington is pastor of St. Mary Magdalene and St. Ambrose Parishes in Chicago. He is a member of the
Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans). He is the new Chair of the Parish Life Committee of the Presbyteral
Council of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Fr. Freddy is a native of Charleston, South Carolina. Before coming to
Chicago, he was a Hospital Chaplain at Harlem Hospital in New York City, a High School Religion teacher, Director of
Religious Education, Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Xavier University in New Orleans, and an adjunct
instructor of Pastoral Theology at Loyola-Marymount University in Los Angeles. He earned a Bachelors of Arts from
Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. He earned a Master of Divinity from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago,
and a Master of Theology from Xavier University in New Orleans. He earned a Doctorate from the United Theological
Seminary.

Special Lunchtime Presentation (no registration necessary)
The Roman Missal: Promises and Challenges This session will briefly explore the context of the English translation of the third edition
of the Roman Missal (what it is, where it's coming from, how it fits into the 45-year renewal of the Liturgy called for by the Second Vatican
Council), highlighting some of its key characteristics. Time will be given for questions and answers. Todd Williamson is Director of the
Office for Divine Worship for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Rev. Monsignor Richard Hynes is the Director of the Department of Parish Life
and Formation.
While Cardinal Francis George will continue his tradition of a dialogue with us and answer our burning questions during lunch, we are adding
this special presentation by The Office for Divine Worship on the new Roman Missal. To accomplish this, one-half of the attendees will eat
lunch and dialogue with the Cardinal while the other half attends the workshop on the third edition of the Roman Missal. Then, we will simply
switch the Cardinal and the presenters from ODW for a second lunch period (see agenda for the day).

It takes more than being a man of God to shepherd a parish in our complex world. In addition to being a spiritual leader, confidant and
advisor, priests are asked to be facilities managers, personnel experts, economists, sociologists and, occasionally, electricians. To help our
clergy deal with some of these issues, we are presenting several special workshops just for them. These workshops are:

For the attorneys, CPAs, and Certified Financial Planners, we are offering Continuing Professional Education Credit with a workshop on

¡Racismo! ¿En la Iglesia? Descubre como puedes participar con la Arquidiócesis de Chicago para sacar de raíz el racismo de la
Iglesia y sociedad. Alicia Juárez-García fue nombrada Directora Asociada de la Oficina de Justicia Racial en marzo de 2004 y es
miembro del Equipo de Lucha contra el Racismo de Aplicación de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago. Entre sus responsabilidades
principales, Alicia coordina talleres parroquiales sobre el racismo en español y en Inglés de una manera culturalmente sensible.
Además, Alicia es columnista para el periódico Chicago Católico. Graciela Contreras tiene un Bachillerato en Contabilidad,
profesión que ejerció por más de 17 años en la industria petrolera. Por los últimos 15 años ha sido la Coordinadora del Vicariato 1
en la Oficina del Ministerio Hispano para la Arquidiócesis de Chicago.

El Líder Católico Hispano en la Iglesia Estadounidense: mas allá de una lectura Cristiana de la realidad a una Presencia
Profética! En esta sesión intentaremos profundizar en la condición básica para pasar de una lectura cristiana de la realidad de la
comunidad Católica Hispana en Estados Unidos, a una presencia profética que mueva la evangelización de toda la sociedad.
Tendremos un dialogo concreto y posible de cómo podemos ser ‘signo’ de unidad y comunión para la Iglesia y la sociedad. Peter
Ductrám es el Coordinador de Iniciativas de Evangelización para las comunidades con Ministerio Hispano en la Arquidiócesis de
Chicago.

Cómo despertar la simpatía de tu parroquia por el matrimonio. Nuestro taller proveerá enfoques y soluciones efectivas para
trabajar con parejas a nivel parroquial. Hablaremos de lo que significa vivir la vocación del sacramento del matrimonio. Olga y
Rafael Anglada tienen 29 años de casados y han servido a la Arquidiócesis de Chicago, como coordinadores y presentadores de
PreCana, desde Junio de 1981.

Iniciar y Sostener un Ministerio Juvenil con voluntarios y poco dinero. Para la mayoría de las parroquias, el hecho de pagar
tiempo completo a un Ministro de Jóvenes es muy difícil. Enfrentados con esta realidad, como entonces podemos iniciar y sostener
un ministerio juvenil? Este taller se enfocara en compartir estrategias que le ayudaran iniciar y sostener un ministerio juvenil con
voluntarios, en una manera eficaz que ha dado resultado a través de la Arquidiócesis. Maria “Cookie” Perez, Darius Villabos,
and Jesus “Chuy” Deleon are Vicariate Youth Coordinators for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Based on the data from Chicago's six-year INSPIRE program, this session reviews some key actions and behaviors of successful
pastoral leaders and parishioner leaders. It turns out that they take the idea of parish mission not just seriously but passionately.
They are good at imagining people as leaders and ministers who never think of themselves as either. They practice the art of good
conversation and storytelling. Participants will practice some of these critical leadership performances. Dan Gast is the Director

This workshop will provide an overview of tribunal procedures and how to assist those who are divorced and now wish to marry in
the Church. Rev. Michael Hack is Judicial Vicar of the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Chicago and has a doctorate

Where Have All the Fathers Gone? As our culture becomes increasingly egalitarian, the roles of men and women are less
distinct in some areas. Divorce is more common, and children born without the benefit of having both mother and father raising
them is becoming an accepted norm. Yet, sociological studies show that children raised in a family headed by the healthy
marriage of their biological parents thrive, physically, emotionally, academically, and economically. This presentation addresses
these concerns and offers strategies for parish ministry to encourage and support men in their role as father. Andrew Lyke is a
marriage and family coach, consultant to parishes, dioceses and community organizations, retreat leader, author, husband, father,
and grandfather.

What You Can Do to Silence the Violence Violence affects us all. Youth are exposed to violence in the media, in their homes,
schools, and communities. Violence is not inevitable; it is learned and can be prevented. Get involved! Many people believe that
the problem is too big, and there is nothing they can do. Come and hear detailing facts and practical ways in which families, youth,
schools, business leaders, and parishes can participate to reverse the trend of violence. Deacon Alfred and Avis Coleman,
and Deacon LeRoy and Teresa Gill are part of the Permanent Diaconate Community of the Archdiocese of Chicago and
representatives of the Black Catholic Deacons of Chicago (BCDC). They have diverse backgrounds and talents and are
committed to serving the needs of the people of God, paying particular attention to the needs of the poor.

The Grieving Process: "Regular" Death and Suicide This workshop will look at the impact of suicide on family and friends
and the dynamics of the grief process. Bruce Engle is the clinical supervisor of the LOSS program (Loving Outreach to Survivors

God’s love for all people becomes apparent. Vatican II taught that the Church on earth is missionary by her very nature. We
cannot help but be missionary! It is part of who we are as Church. This session will explore how parishes can be enlivened when
adults and children in the parish begin to awaken to their deepest identity as missionary disciples. Together we'll explore a
process of formation that opens up the way to discovering that we are indeed all called to be on mission wherever we are! Sr.

How the Design of Solomon's Temple Still Influences Our Churches While people generally understand the church building
as a place of gathering based on the synagogue tradition, the biblical roots of Catholic churches include influences from the
Temple tradition as well. Understanding the church building as the fulfillment of both temple and synagogue brings new richness
of understanding to the meaning of liturgical architecture. Dr. Denis McNamara is a faculty member at the Liturgical Institute at
the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/ Mundelein Seminary, where he teaches courses on art, architecture, aesthetics, and
culture.

Why Should I Go to Church? There are an increasing number of young adults – single, married and young adult parents - who
are asking this question. They simply want to know "why." Many parents and young adults do not see any need whatsoever to
attend church consistently on Sunday. Many will drop off their children for their religious education classes but do not see a need
to enter a church building themselves on any regular basis. This workshop will not only address this question but will answer with
the understanding of our Catholic tradition. This workshop will be helpful to parish leaders, those in ministry, young adults, young
parents, and parents of those in their 20s and 30s. Rev. John Cusick is the Director of the Archdiocesan Office of Young Adult
Ministry and is resident at Old St. Patrick's Parish.

Engaging Your Faith: What Catholics Believe and Why It Matters (Part 1). For most Catholics, religious education stops at
Confirmation, and making the all-important bridge to adult faith is left to chance. This workshop is a conversation about the ABC’s
of adult faith and the importance of seeing the world through a Catholic lens. Participants will talk through key concepts and
develop strategies for taking these conversations back home. The presenters and dialogue partners are Rev. Mike O’Connell,

You Americans! What German Pastoral Leaders Tell Us About Chicago Parishes For the past five years, groups of
pastoral visitors--pastors and lay church workers--have been visiting the Archdiocese and staying four to six weeks in parishes of
all kinds. They come to study U.S. parish life and, while here, they usually form enduring friendships. The German "Crossing
Over" program has also invited American pastors, deacons, and lay ministers to explore six German dioceses in or near the Ruhr
Valley. This workshop explores the remarkable things we've learned about ourselves and our parish communities, the facets we
should appreciate and cultivate, as well as new practices we might consider. Rev. Robert Heidenreich is the Pastor of Sacred
Heart Parish in Winnetka. Dan Gast is the Director of INSPIRE, a Partnership Initiative of Loyola University Chicago and the
Archdiocese of Chicago. Mark Bersano is part of INSPIRE.

and directs the implementation of the Archdiocesan Parish Transformation Program. Taffie Iwanicki is the Manager of Parish
Operations for the Archdiocese and also oversees Vicariate Administrative Consultants and Accounting Service Centers for over
360 Parish and Schools. Rev. Terry Keehan is Pastor of Holy Family Parish in Inverness.

Discernment Process to Select Members for the Parish Pastoral Council This workshop will focus on discernment; what it
is, and how it can help in the formation of parish pastoral councils or the renewal of council membership. It will include discussion
of the ministry of parish councils and how, practically, to discern membership. Emphasis will be on the council as ministry and the
process of discerning. Sr. Caritas Wehrman, SSND is a School Sister of Notre Dame who has been a teacher, Religious

Inclusion In Our Parishes: Where People With Disabilities Are Jesus frequented places where people with disabilities were
and was not afraid to interact with them. This is ancient, but it is the same way we need to be in the Church today. This workshop
will present strategies for accommodation and accessibility in our parishes. All disabilities will be addressed, including mental
illness. Connie Rakitan is the Program Director for Faith & Fellowship and Chair of the Archdiocesan Commission on Mental
Illness. Joanne Meyer is the Program Manager for Pathways Awareness Foundation.

Living and Worshipping in Multi-Cultural Parish Communities (Bilingual) Culturally diverse parishes offer an opportunity to
realize the meaning of being 'catholic' (universal) in a local ecclesial setting. The pastor, together with the pastoral staff and Parish
Pastoral Council, are responsible to have as their goal inclusion of all the cultural groups in outreach, hospitality, leadership
development, empowerment of leaders for decision-making, strengthening a sense of belonging, and achieving full commitment to
the mission of the parish. The workshop will offer practical suggestions for parishes that have a dominant cultural group with other
smaller groups so they can build together one parish identity. We will share our experience of nearly 30 years of struggle, hurt,
frustration, confusion, as well as joy, enthusiasm, happiness, and hope on our journey. The work always continues and is never

How to Begin and Sustain a Youth Group When You Can't Afford a Youth Minister This workshop will present the
Vision/tools to use in developing a volunteer-led Parish Youth Ministry. Vicariate Youth Ministry Coordinators will discuss the
concept and strategies for ministry to high school youth coordinated by volunteer leadership. The six Vicariate Youth Ministry
Coordinators and Coordinator of Polish Youth Ministry serve in ethnically and economically diverse Vicariates responding to a
multiplicity of challenges. Each coordinator brings many years of experiences and insights to this workshop. Joanne

The presentation will include a panel of young people who will explain how they have benefited from parish programs and how they
experience Church. Theological reflection will provide the basis for successful parish efforts to reach out and serve youth,
especially the most in need. Rev. Bruce Wellems, CMF, is pastor of Holy Cross/ Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in the Back of
the Yards neighborhood on the near southwest side of Chicago. He has been working with a dedicated lay staff and youth-at-risk
for 20 years at this site.

year he came to United States. He served as an Associate Pastor of St. Constance Parish in Chicago and at St. Theresa parish in
Palatine. In 2009 he became an administrator and in 2010 the pastor of St. Ladislaus Parish.

racism can be eliminated. Discover how to become an active participant in the work of dismantling racism in the Archdiocese of
Chicago. Alicia Juarez-Garcia, a native of Chicago, was named Associate Director for the Office for Racial Justice in March of
2004 and is a member of the Anti-Racism Implementation Team of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Among her primary
responsibilities, Alicia coordinates workshops on racism in both Spanish in a culturally sensitive manner throughout parishes in the
Archdiocese of Chicago and is responsible for the Archdioceses of Chicago's Anti-Racism Implementation Team's website,
www.dwellinmylove.org. Sr. Lois Prebil, osf consults with religious congregations, churches, and schools. Lois also works with
the Office for Racial Justice within the Archdiocese of Chicago.

the baptized in the life of the Church. When there is confusion, who speaks for the Church? Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Is
the Cardinal Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago and past-President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. He also
serves the Church and the Archdiocese in numerous other roles. He has extensive administrative and teaching experience and is
the author of numerous articles, pastoral letters, and a recent book, "The Difference that God Makes." Cardinal George's motto is:
"To Christ Be Glory in the Church."

Forming and Reforming Parish Pastoral Councils Join us for a Parish Pastoral Council meeting to experience a model of
what happens at a PPC meeting, from beginning to end, and not pulling any punches. At this workshop, you are a Council
member. We will work through what it is like, or should be like, at a PPC meeting. You will be engaged throughout, dealing with
typical vision items for parish growth and community building, as well as trying to resolve typical parish difficulties. Come prepared
to be a contributing member of this model Parish Pastoral Council. Bern Wheel served as a member of the PPC, in various
offices, as a representative to the Deanery and is active in other parish ministries at St. Catherine-St. Lucky Parish, Oak
Park/Chicago. Don Killelea has been active in PPCs and Parish Leadership Days for many years.

do we move from the "any warm body" approach to one of invitation and shared ministry? This workshop will provide ideas and
inspiration on finding, inviting, and supporting ministry volunteers. Susan Lehocky is the Pastoral Associate and Director of
Parish Life and Stewardship at St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville.

The Making of Spiritual Space for Young Adults This workshop would focus on helping young adults discern their
purpose/vocation. Participants will learn to appreciate the need for ongoing faith formation in order to remain attentive to their
purpose in life. This workshop will focus on such themes as vocation/calling, meditation/contemplation, purpose and passion.
Timone Davis is the director of ReCiL - Reclaiming Christ in Life, a ministry in the Office for Evangelization for young adults who
are seeking to know God beyond the surface. Timone is a cradle Catholic who was a "pewster" until she discovered that the
uselessness of the Church was because she wasn't giving anything of herself.

Spirituality: A World-View Our Church, ever ancient, ever new, offers us some profound insights that affect our daily living.
These are called “spiritualities.” We each have a spirituality, and the challenge is to continue to develop a healthy spirituality -- one
that reflects the God whom Jesus reveals. Our spiritualities function in very concrete ways in our lives. Our “world-view” -- the
ways we see ourselves and others; the ways we deal with conflict; the ways we allow ourselves to love and experience love -- all of
this is an expression of our spirituality. It is the intent of the Gospels to “stretch” our way of looking at the world, so that we see as
Jesus sees and love as Jesus loves. Sr. Dee Peppard, BVM is currently Pastoral Associate at St. Raymond De Penafort Parish
in Mt. Prospect where her concentration is on adult formation. Sr. Dee has ministered full-time in the Church for more than thirtyfive years and enjoys working with people on a faith level and has learned much from those with whom she ministers.

and Adult Formation.

Violence in the Home This workshop will explore the dynamics of Domestic Violence and the appropriate outreach and
response that a faith community can make to support the parties involved. Deacon Dan Welter currently serves in the Office for
Canonical Services for the Archdiocese of Chicago and is a retired Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County who presided over
domestic violence cases for several years. Beverly Ann Stewart is a Psychiatric Registered Nurse for the IDHS and the Domestic
Violence Consultant for the Office for Black Catholics. She is a 30-year survivor of spousal abuse.

How Can Your Parish Respond to Street Violence and Abuse (Bilingual) Learn tactics and tools to engage parishioners and
other community residents from a faith-based perspective in the struggle to reduce neighborhood violence. Both prevention and
intervention will be discussed. Rey Lopez-Calderon is the Executive Director of the Alianza Leadership Institute and the
founding organizer of Alliance of the Southeast, an interfaith, multicultural organization of 14 institutions.

SPRED: Faith Formation for People With Special Needs: Our Story (Bilingual) The SPRED program continues to evolve
with the Church in providing specialized catechesis for children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. This
workshop is offered in Spanish and English. As community religious workers, we are a diocesan resource to parishes in forming
and mentoring SPRED communities for people with special needs and learning problems throughout the Archdiocese. We are
involved in our parishes in other ways as well. Elizabeth Sivek and Julia Hess have been involved in the SPRED ministry for
many years.

CONVERSATION WITH CARDINAL GEORGE - QUESTIONS
Prominent among the Archdiocese’s many noteworthy qualities is the remarkable level of communication between the
people and the Archbishop. Speaking about the consultative process, Cardinal George said, “One also has to consult
the people themselves, in whom the grace of Christ works constantly.” The Cardinal went on to describe the many
councils and commissions that constitute a formal channel for his consultation with the people. His interaction with the
faithful at gatherings such as Leadership Day is equally important informal consultation with the people. Leadership
Day participants will have the opportunity to engage in a Conversation with Cardinal George. At the bottom of this
page is a form for your question to the Cardinal. You may send it in with your registrations. Additional cards
will be included in the materials participants receive upon arrival. The Cardinal values the opportunity to learn what is
on your minds. Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to ask the Cardinal a question.
Entre muchas cualidades importantes de la Archidiócesis es el nivel notable de la comunicación entre la gente y el
Arzobispo. Refiriendose acerca del proceso consultivo el Cardenal George dijo “Uno también necesita consultar con la
gente, en las cuales la gracia de Cristo trabaja constantemente.” El Cardenal describió varios concilios y comisiones que

Z pośród wielu wartościowych cech Archidiecezji, bardzo godna uwagi jest znakomita łączność miedzy ludźmi a jej
Arcybiskupem. Kardynał George, w wydaniu sierpniowym The Catholic New World, (29/8/06) mówiąc o doradczym
procesie, powiedział, „Należy zaciągać rady u ludzi, bo w nich stale działa łaska Chrystusa.” Następnie Kardynał
wymienił wiele grup doradczych i komisji, które są naturalnym kanałem dla niego w konsultowaniu się z ludźmi. Jego
