Guided tours on foot or by bus can provide great insight into this varied city between the Rhine and the

about the work of night watchmen and other “less honourable” colleagues and hear tales of Karl Theodor and the “good old days” of the Electoral
Palatinate. Taking you past historic squares and illuminated sights it will become clear how industrialisation changed the former residential seat.

The Diversity of Neckarstadt-West*
Since the residential seat of Mannheim forms the focus of the Wittelsbach anniversary year in 2013, the tour shines the spotlight on this, one
of the most influential dynasties in Germany. The tour highlights how significantly the ruling Wittelsbach family impacted the identity and
traditions of this region.
From 8 September 2013 to 2 March 2014 the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums at Museum Zeughaus and at Mannheim Baroque Palace will be presenting
the exhibition “The Wittelsbachs on the Rhine. The Electoral Palatinate and Europe”.
In its almost 140 years the district of Neckarstadt-West has undergone quite a few changes. Nevertheless, it has still retained its inimitable
charm. The former gardens on the Neckar developed into a haven of cultural diversity. This guided tour gives you an insight into the past and
present of this district located “Iwwer de Neckarbrick” – dialect for “Over the Neckar Bridge”.

23 May to 8 June 2014 sees the world theatre festival “Theater der Welt” being hosted in Mannheim. The international festival is a good
opportunity to look back on the ‘Grid-City’ artistic history – especially Mannheim’s Nationaltheater. As the oldest municipal theatre in the
world it was once a magnet for such figures as Wieland, Klopstock and Schiller. The guided tour spans the arc between Mannheim’s artistic and
scientific history and its future – whetting your appetite for the events at the “Theater der Welt” festival.
It is not only Mannheim’s checkerboard layout but also its processes of urban development that suggest similarities with the “Big Apple”. This
process of transitioning from its traditions towards a modern sub-culture in the ‘Grid-City’ is especially noticeable in the district of Jungbusch.
The guided tour takes you from Filsbach and the old mill area “Sackträgerviertel” through the “Unterstadt” to today’s Jungbusch.

Industrial Heritage at the Harbour*
Factories, the harbour and workers’ tenements are all part and parcel of Mannheim’s history and traditions. The local industrial society Verein
Rhein-Neckar Industriekultur was set up to preserve these traditions. On this walking tour along the shores of Mannheim’s Mühlau harbour
and junction canal your Welcome Center guide will not just show you spectacular vistas and provide interesting insights into economic history
but also shed light on the city’s historical development.
The history of the city of Mannheim is as diverse as it citizens. Taking you past Mannheim’s sights from Marktplatz to the Baroque Palace this
tour tells you exciting tales from the lives of famous figures on Mannheim’s gay and lesbian scene through the ages. Amongst others, you will
be introduced to Napoleon Seyfarth, the author and co-founder of the city’s first gay community SchAM (Schwule Aktion Mannheim) set up
in 1975, who caused a stir with his outspoken and apt writings.

A fiercely independent lady with lots of cats – this was the impression Katharina Margareta von Ludwigsburg, Countess Ottweiler, left on
Mannheim folk at the turn of the 19th century. She went by the name of “Gänsegretel” (Goose Gretel) – as she lived the simple life of a
Goose Girl all alone before she was taken away from all that to get married and become a member of the nobility. On this costumed tour the
aristocratic “Gänsegretel” or her lady-in-waiting will tell you tales of pomp, splendour and plagues.
In July 1763 the child prodigy travelled to Mannheim for the first time with his parents and sister Nannerl. Mozart’s experiences in the ‘GridCity’ were to impact his life and left numerous traces. On this walk, you will follow in his footsteps through the former residential seat of
Mannheim.

“With Mozart through Mannheim” – in July 1763 the child prodigy
travelled to Mannheim for the first time with his parents and sister
Nannerl. Mozart’s experiences in the ‘Grid-City’ were to impact his life

Mardi Gras with Street Carnival

Carnival has a long tradition in the ‘Grid-City’. The annual procession held alternately
in the cities of Mannheim and Ludwigshafen attracts carnival fans from throughout
Southern Germany. Afterwards, the Carnival Market around Mannheim’s Wasserturm
attracts the crowds with sweets, a carousel and a big wheel. On Mardi Gras Mannheim
then celebrates in traditional style throughout the entire city centre.
Mannheim’s “Stadtfest” City Festival

Mannheim City Festival is the biggest open-air event in the region and what’s more
it’s free. A real tradition, it enthuses the crowds with a varied music programme of live
