Our Museum
Mission
To connect everyone to the rich history, dynamic cultures, and art of Asian Pacific Americans through
vivid storytelling and inspiring experiences.
Goals
Through provocative and immersive exhibitions, accessible and interactive public programs, and
creative and educational student opportunities, The Wing works to:
• Empower Asian Pacific Americans (APAs) to tell stories in our own voices, providing first-person
perspectives on historic legacies, present realities, and future directions of the APA story
• Foster contemporary APA artists and increase visibility of their work
• Serve as a primary Smithsonian affiliate in the Pacific Northwest, a new National Park Service
Affiliated Area, and as the nation’s only museum dedicated to the multi-ethnic pan-APA communities
• Support Seattle’s Chinatown-International District as an economic engine to further preserve and
revitalize our neighborhood
• Inspire and strengthen the APA community through leadership development
Coming Up for 2016-2017
We will present new community-driven exhibitions and programs to meet the expanding demand for
authentic stories exploring APA’s vibrant culture and rich heritage including:
• A newly-supported project with the National Trust for Historic Preservation to preserve the Panama
Hotel collection, as part of a nationally-known Japantown historic building
• Curator Namita Wiggers’ response to The Wing’s textiles collection, working with contemporary
artists Surabhi Ghosh, Stephanie Syjuco, and Aram Han Sifuentes in the new exhibition Everything
has been material for scissors to shape
• The third and final year of Do You Know Bruce? celebrating Bruce Lee’s art, philosophy and writing,
opening October 1
• The personal journeys of APA athletes from a wide range of sports, ethnic and cultural identities,
genders, and generations in the exhibition Who’s Got Game?
• Glimpses of a Forever Foreigner: Poetry & Artwork Inspired by Japanese American Experiences,
an exhibition featuring artist Roger Shimomura and poet Lawrence Matsuda
• Promote historic and cultural value of the District through all-day admissions, new seasonal tours
and public programs such as Family Fun Days
• Activate Japantown’s Nihonmachi Alley and complete work on Chiyo’s Garden to further enliven
our neighborhood
• Provide an accessible resource for teachers and students through curriculum boxes, subsidized
tours for low-income students and public programs
• Serve middle school and high school students through our free afterschool and summer arts
leadership programs

Monique Ming Lavin | Emcee
Monique Ming Lavin co-anchors KIRO 7 News at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. weekdays,
alongside Steve Raible. She joined KIRO 7 in 2006 and has covered a range of
stories including the 2009 trial of Amanda Knox in Perugia, Italy, which received
an Emmy Award and a National Headliner Award for Breaking News. Monique has
been on the desk for some of Western Washington’s biggest news stories, including
coverage of the shootings at Marysville Pilchuck High School. She also anchored
coverage of a holiday season shooting at Westfield Southcenter for which KIRO 7
received an Emmy Award and National Headliner Award for Best Newscast.
Fred Northup | Auctioneer
Fred Northup, Jr., is a premier Pacific Northwest fundraising auctioneer, emcee,
comedy improviser, and musician. For 10 years, Fred appeared on stage as a
company member of Seattle’s famed TheatreSports comedy improv group. He
works nationally auctioneering and emceeing, and has entertained thousands at
major company events for Starbucks, Microsoft, Boeing, Amazon.com, Expedia.
In addition to his work on stage and on camera, Fred owns a video and event
production company, Southdown Creative. He’s also the co-inventor of RainGlobes,

Sharon Maeda | Reader
Sharon Maeda is a longtime supporter of The Wing, including service on five
exhibition community advisory committees. She previously was executive director
of 21 PROGRESS, focusing on leadership development for immigrants and
underrepresented young adults. Her eclectic career has taken her to Los Angeles,
New York and Washington, DC, where she coordinated communications for Pacifica
Radio, the United Methodist Church’s Global Mission Board, and the US Department
of Housing and Urban Development, respectively. She currently leads Spectra
Communications, a consulting firm.

Aki Sogabe has been a major contributor to the arts in the Pacific Northwest
since 1978 when she introduced kirie (Japanese paper-cutting). Influenced by
Hokusai, a master of Ukiyo-e in the late Edo period, Soaring Hawks is part of
Sogabe’s Waterfall series, and depicts her love of the Seattle Seahawks! Her
work can be seen in public art installations including the Pike Place Market,
Seattle Center, and Uwajimaya Village and in many public and private collections
including the State of Washington and the State of Oregon Public Art Programs.
Her work is also regularly displayed at The Wing’s Marketplace.

The esteemed US Congressman Jim McDermott not only represents our
region’s interest in the halls of Congress, but shares his sumi painting talent
with us also. The largely self taught painter derives inspiration from the
bountiful nature surrounding us, as well as his creative imagination. In this
subtle mountainside painting, citing a famous haiku poem by the renowned
poet Basho, the artist depicts travelers on their way to a restful destination.

Beni O’Donnell’s art work reflects the lively color and quick movement of
koi fish. Originally from Dalian, China, she studied with painting masters

Inspired by tigers she has observed in various parts of the world, Lolan Lo
Cheng captures the facial expressions and graceful strength of tigers through
her skillful brush strokes on rice paper. She has exhibited her beautiful work
extensively in the US and Asia, and has been published in the Taiwan Artist
Series.

Chicago-born Ken Taya started Enfu in 2005 as a personal outlet to express
his creativity outside of developing challenging video games. Much of his early
work explored the cultural paradigm shifts encountered as a person straddling
Japanese, Japanese-American, and American identities. His art embraces
vivid child-like colors and whimsy while grappling with the innocence often lost
to adults, which he calls “cuteness tempered with grit”. Enfu’s commissioned
illustrations and murals can be seen across the Pacific Northwest.

Continuing in the tradition and inspiration of the acclaimed work of her father
George Nakashima, Mira Nakashima offers an improvisation of George’s
“Wepman Table” designed in 1954. Nakashima uses a black walnut with “free”
edges to give this piece its richly unique characteristics. As the head of the
George Nakashima Studios in New Hope, Pennsylvania, Mira creates iconic
furniture, has published books, and received numerous awards for her work. She
will show her creations in Ahmedabad, India, and Takamatsu, Japan, this year.

The influence of Jacob Lawrence and African art is evident in Marita Dingus’
lively work created during a Pilchuck residency, combining recycled materials
with cast glass. Her awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, Poncho Artist
of the Year, an Artist Trust Fellowship, and a Museum of Glass solo show. Her
work will be shown at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art this year. Dingus’
installation of 400 Men of African Descent is part of the Seattle Art Museum’s
permanent collection.

Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) was one of the most impressive and prolific
woodblock artists whose work spanned the Edo to Meiji Periods. He combined
a deep appreciation and knowledge of Kabuki drama with his skillful woodblock
craftsmanship. An apprentice of the renowned artist Utagawa Kunisada,
Kunichika created few landscape pieces, other than a commissioned series on
the famed Tokaido Road. Instead, he focused on the Japanese beauties, or
Bijin-ga, and stage actors of Tokyo’s red light districts, using exaggerated facial
shapes and brilliant colors.

Z.Z. Wei was born in Beijing and began painting during the tumultuous Cultural
Revolution. He came to Seattle in 1989 and ventured out to the dramatic Eastern
Washington Palouse country. Wei has used those rolling hills and back roads for
numerous paintings, including this one, with its iconic Airstream trailer. Mr. Wei’s
24th annual solo exhibition will be held at Patricia Rovzar Gallery in downtown
Seattle, opening in September.

Accomplished Northwest sculptor Gerard Tsutakawa creates artwork powerful
in both geometric forms and undulating shapes. He masters the balance
between positive form and negative space in his hallmark patina bronze work.
Ascending Curves is fabricated and welded from sheet bronze. Two of his
public installations include “Thunderbolt” at the new Four Seasons Hotel and
“Mitt” at Safeco Field, probably the most-photographed sculpture in Seattle.
He just finished a major sculpture for the Japanese American Language School
Memorial on the UW Tacoma campus.
The Wing honors
the late Robert Ohashi
Bob and Marian Ohashi were dedicated and generous supporters of The Wing. Bob was a Museum Board member for
10 years, with service as Vice President, and he was a trusted colleague of local artists, encouraging their generous
donations to the Museum auction. An art collector with extensive knowledge of Native American and Native Alaskan art,
his connections extended beyond Seattle. He mentored and encouraged Museum staff and board to nurture our long-term
community relationships.
Bob was born in Ketchikan, Alaska, where his Japanese grandfather emigrated during the Gold Rush. He loved skinny
dipping by a beaver dam with Japanese and Native American boys. During WWII, Bob’s family was removed from Alaska
and imprisoned in Camp Harmony in Puyallup and Minidoka Camp along with other Japanese Americans. He fought
adversity and joined the first University of Washington graduating class after incarceration.
The Wing Luke Museum remembers the kindness and leadership of Bob Ohashi as we honor him tonight.

Contemporary ceramics master Akio Takamori specializes in portraying the
human form in hand thrown porcelain with underglazes. He enjoys working with
the refined quality of porcelain, especially when making functional ware. A longtime art faculty member at the University of Washington, Takamori received the
Mayor’s Art and Innovation Award this past year. He has exhibited nationally and
abroad, has won numerous awards and fellowships, and appears in most major
ceramic art collections.

Roger Shimomura’s signature artworks employ Pop Art imagery to address political
issues of Asian America. This striking lithograph combines the influence of the
traditional Japanese woodblock print with an image of a Japanese American
mother and baby entering a World War II concentration camp, denoted by the
famous name tags they all wore. Shimomura was awarded the Joan Mitchell
Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant Program Award. A long time faculty
member at the University of Kansas at Lawrence, Shimomura’s list of prominent
awards and commissions spans many decades and locations nationwide, and
includes a large mural in King County’s Westlake Bus Tunnel Station.

Patti Warashina, one of the most celebrated ceramic artists in America, and

humorous female figures in clay grew from a past in both functional clay art and
Pop Art imagery. Warashina taught at the UW School of Art for twenty-five years
and retired as Professor Emerita in 1995. She is a Fellow of the American Craft
Council and her work appears in art collections throughout the US and abroad,
including the Smithsonian Institution, Museum of Art and Design in New York,
and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto.

Yamamoto designs and builds Japanese influenced custom furniture. In his
Whidbey Island studio, the artist crafts his work from choice, certified sustainable
hardwoods. Yamamoto, who is influenced by his uncle, the acclaimed artist
George Nakashima, meticulously handcrafts pieces using interlocking joinery for
optimum structural integrity. The pieces feature a hand-rubbed finish to maintain
the wood’s natural beauty.

Stewart Wong’s artwork is inspired by the stone temple architecture of East Asia
and Southeast Asia. And, on the other side of the globe, he is influenced by the
great and unorthodox Barcelona architect Antoni Gaudi. In this creation, the artwork
also serves the functional purpose of a home for wrens and chickadees to rest
in. Stewart has shown his work at the Whatcom Museum and Northwest Designer
Craftsmen and he has been featured in American Craft Magazine. You can see his
ceramic art in a show coming up in June at Seward Park Art Studio.

“Guardians” is a hand-embellished fine art print by Louie Gong (Nooksack),
completed in 2015. The original “Guardians” painting, which was 8’ x 8’, was
created for The Wing’s Cultural Confluences exhibition in 2013. Since then, it has
become a signature piece representing Louie’s trendsetting merger of influences
from his mixed Native and Asian heritage as well as the City of Seattle itself.
In 2015, Louie was commissioned by the City to paint a variation of this design
for the President of China. Louie explored this theme after recognizing the
overlapping, common purpose of guardian lions and Coast Salish house posts,
which identify and protect important spaces.

Agnes C. Lee uses the poem “Fairies by the River” by 15th Century poet Yang
Zhen as the basis for this dynamic work. Using Chinese calligraphy techniques

Barry Wong’s photography transforms simple food items into fine art. Star

For an entirely new take on traditional calligraphy, Tommer Peterson tears
his masterfully painted characters into squares and then re-assembles them.

and later with other high level Japanese teachers. His stunning work has

Mark P. Keane focuses on the essential elements of wild nature, then simplifies
and arranges them in an elegant tray. The traditional Kyoto art of bontei, practiced
in East Asia, often is paired with bonsai miniature trees, but is contemporary and
more akin to abstract sculpture made of stones, barn wood and small ceramic
pieces. This artwork is reminiscent of the Ryoanji rock garden in Kyoto. Keane
has worked as a lecturer in the Department of Environmental Design at the Kyoto
University of Art and Design and at Cornell University, and is a fellow at the
Research Center for Japanese Garden Art in Kyoto and the Institute for Medieval
Japanese Studies in New York. He is a landscape architect, artist and writer and
lived in Kyoto for 20 years, specializing in Japanese garden design.

Rick Wong’s photography ranges from the most dramatic landscape art

Shunga are Edo Period erotic woodblock prints, a type of Ukiyo-e. Using subtle
coverings of kimono, often two bodies are depicted writhing on the tatami, and
sometimes the bodies are graphically shown. As part of the underworld culture
of theater actors, prostitutes and the “mizu-shobai” or drinking trade, Shunga
prints titillated, and sometimes instructed!
