Travel & Lifestyles is a weekly
information report from Cheryl

friendly!’ family travel and

tourism promotion. Watch Cheryl
on Global TV Morning News every

and a cold brew in the intimate lounge.
You’ll be hard pressed to leave as the
atmosphere is very appealing and relaxed.
The well appointed guest rooms
with solid pine log furniture and puffy
eiderdowns on the queen sized beds
guarantee deep, restful sleeps. While
the main lodge bedrooms do not
connect, each room has a queen and
double bed, so you can accommodate a
young family quite comfortably.
This year round destination resort
offers an all-inclusive vacation that is
absolutely perfect for the entire family.
From toddlers to grandparents, the
amenities and recreation are available
within one exquisite setting. And if
you want nothing more than a few
days away to relax and unwind in the
peaceful beauty of Mother Nature’s
bounty, Tyax offers this too.
For more information on their 20th
anniversary celebrations this year, and
to learn more about the area’s history,
take a look at the Cariboo, Chilcotin
and Coast Region’s site at:
www.landwithoutlimits.com and of
course Tyax’s own site at
www.tyax.com or call 250.238.2221 for
reservations. You’re going to love it!
Then if it’s a casual day of puttering
around the lake area, play a game of
tennis, volleyball or simply swim in the
cool waters of Lake Tyaughton. Over the
weekend, the days end with a barbeque
and campfire sing-along under the
stars. All this plus no need to worry
about pesky mosquitoes. Swallows and
martins live in over a hundred birdhouses surrounding the property.
A Family Friendly Wilderness Dream Come True
M
aybe you’ve heard of Tyax?
Perhaps you’ve even been
fortunate to stay here…or,
are considering it for this year’s
getaway. This magical wilderness
resort, located a captivating threehour drive north of Whistler, is
nestled against the gorgeous snowcapped South Chilcotin Mountains.
It came about, only twenty years ago,
as the result of one man’s powerful
vision.
Gus Abel, Founder and President,
joined forces with Swiss entrepreneur, Urs Villiger, whose passion for
bush plane flying only served to
complement Gus’s resort concept,
began the site excavation and
building in May 1986.

Angle
A Weekly Profile with
Tourism Leaders and
Innovators
Gus Abel still pinches himself at
the realization that his dream of
building a wilderness resort lodge
for families, his Tyax Mountain
Lake Resort has truly come to pass.
And he still laughs when reflecting
on the early days and painful meetings with bankers as he worked to
bring Tyax to fruition.“They said
it was too far from popular destinations to be successful” recalls
Gus. “Fortunately, a Swiss investor
shared my dream and helped
make the resort a reality”.
A dedicated man, filled with
integrity and passion, Gus and his
team are celebrating their twenty
years of success with a gift to the
many guests who helped them
turn Tyax into a world-class, year
round destination resort. “We have
lots of nice surprises for guests at
the resort. One of the first things
is to give something back to those
that helped us bring our dream
alive, so we are mailing them Tyax
‘cash’ with a special invitation to
return”.
Today, Gus’s original plan for the
combination of mountainous terrain, sunshine and pretty much ideal
weather conditions year round,
make for a spectacular, family
friendly getaway – not too far from
the sophisticated reaches of
Vancouver. The need for a bush
plane service on-site became very
apparent soon after the first summer
of operation. Tyax Air Service was
launched and now flies guests to
remote alpine lakes for fishing,
hiking and mountain biking, as well
as flight seeing tours over the vast
Bridge River Glacier Fields.
Want a base to call home away
from home? Choose one of the five
lakeside chalets complete with
barbeques, river rock fireplaces and
the conveniences of a modern home
(full kitchen, private bedrooms and
living space). Cozy up inside – read
books, play board games – or go for
a paddle in the canoe that’s provided
with each cabin.
A stay at the main lodge includes
three hearty meals per day served in
the lakeside dining room – no extra
charge for the stunning views over
the lake. Or, enjoy an a-la-carte meal
kid friendly? ... and then some!
Wouldn’t the kids be thrilled to
take off on a family vacation where
everything their young hearts desire
would be right out the front door of
their cabin?
Tyax Wilderness Resort was
specifically built as a family-style
wilderness resort because that is
what Gus Abel wanted. Living onsite with his wife Marita and sons
Robert and Thorne, Gus’s early
vision of creating a welcome and all
encompassing vacation property catering to couples with their kids of all
ages, is a stunning reality going
twenty years strong.
There are so many activities that
the kids will have a tough time
deciding each day’s fun – heck, the
entire family will find this! Tweens
and teens are entertained by the gold
panning lessons – the Goldbridge
area is ripe with gold rush history
from the 1930’s, and ‘awesome’
mountain biking trails, to canoeing
out the front door of your chalet.
Then there are the horses. With lessons under the guidance of the
resident wrangler, kids of all ages will
revel in their new-found skills,
particularly when they go trail-riding
without mom and dad. Plus, the
horses graze freely each night along
the expansive front lawn of the
lodge. A beautiful sight to behold as
little ones prepare for bedtime.
If you travel now till the end of
July, the show of alpine wildflowers
is breathtaking. Take a wildlife viewing ATV safari or plan for an overnight pack horse trip, staying at
nearby Spruce Lake. Of course the
thrill of catching your own rainbow
trout for dinner is pretty impressive.
