Today, green is a way of life at UNT, where their sustainability programs and environmental research have brought them national recognition. Eagle Claw Mean Green Nickname The Eagle hand sign is UNT’s universal sign of pride and unity. To display your pride: UNT’s unique Mean Green nickname originated in the 1960s as fans cheered on the football team and its punishing defense. The earliest newspaper references to the Mean Green appeared in the spring of 1967. One of the original Mean Green players went on to a Hall of Fame career in the NFL with a nickname of his own, “Mean” Joe Greene. The dominating lineman became the cornerstone of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ “Steel Curtain” defense and a four-time Super Bowl champion. Today, all of UNT’s athletics teams are known as the Mean Green. 1 Hold up your hand. 2 Make a “V” for Victory using your pointer and middle fingers. 3 Extend your thumb and curl your fingers slightly toward your palm. Notable alumni include: Dr. Phil Actors: Peter Weller and Thomas Haden Church Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, Adel al-Jubeir Former Prime Minister of Jordan, Taher al-Masri Grammy Award-winners: Don Henley, Roy Orbison, and Norah Jones Academy of Country Music-winners: Eli Young Band Lighting of McConnell Tower Scrappy, the Eagle Mascot The student body chose the Eagle as their mascot in 1922 for its keen eye, strength, independence and loyalty. In 1950, students named the first live bird mascot “Scrappy,” which later became the name of the human mascot. The Eagle was known by other names through the years, including “Eppy” in the 1980s. But in 1995, the modern-day Scrappy returned to the nest as the Mean Green’s biggest fan. 14 ‘Lucky’, the Albino Squirrel Campus legend says the rare, furry white animal is a good luck charm of mythical proportion. Green lights, first installed by the Talons in the 1970s, shine on McConnell Tower after athletic victories and for special occasions. After evening home football victories, the Talons lead the march from Apogee Stadium to the Hurley Administration Building where they turn on the tower’s green lights to signal the win to the campus and community. LED lights installed in 2014 make UNT’s green light shine bright. 15 * Experience * more * Denton is 3.5 hours to New York, NY 3.5 hours to Boston, MA 3.5 hours to Los Angeles, CA 2.5 hours to Orlando, FL BY PLANE 45 minutes from Fort Worth and Dallas, TX 2 hours from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 5 hours from Houston, TX 6 hours from the Gulf of Mexico BY CAR 16 Like most college freshmen, you will live in an on-campus residence hall (also called a dormitory, or “dorm” for short) with other male and female students right on UNT’s campus.
