A Letter from the Interim President of the
Corte Madera Chamber of Commerce
Bill Blackburn, Interim President
It has truly been an honor
and a privilege to serve the
Chamber of Commerce
members this past year!
I feel we can look back
over 2015 and be very proud
of our accomplishments:
Most notably the production
and sponsorship of the
annual Twin Cities July
4th celebration. 2015 set
records for attendance parade

entries and has become “The
Celebration” to attend in
Marin. We also hosted the
annual “State of The Town
Address” luncheon and the
Corte Madera Town Council
Candidates Night. One of
our goals each year is to raise
money to help support the
Chamber and allow us to
contribute to worthwhile
charities and events. This
past year we hosted a very
successful golf tournament
and our “Silent Auction”
held at Tesla in the Village
was also extremely successful.
Donations of time and money
this past year included: Santa
on the Fire Truck, Toys for
Tots/Things for Teens, Gift
Baskets for the Lion’s Club
Crab Feed, Movie Night at
the Village while promoting
shop locally, Holiday gifts
for Corte Madera/Larkspur
School District Teachers
and much more. We also cosponsored the “Living Wage
Forum” event with the Marin
Employment Connection and
co-sponsored a luncheon with
the San Anselmo Chamber
and the Marin Sanitary
District. Overall it has been an
extremely busy year and one
that could not have been so
successful with the aid of our
volunteer board members as
well as volunteers like Jackie
Branch and Beth Benz. We
also want to thank the Town
Staff and Council Members
for their support. Thank you
to all!
Finally, we just want to
add that the Chamber is
committed to doing all we
can to work with the Town
of Corte Madera and the
Centennial committee to
make the Corte Madera 2016
a Centennial to remember.
Happy Birthday Corte
Madera!

December 2015, January & February 2016 • Corte Madera Connection
From the Desk of the
Town Council Liaison
Carla Condon, Liaison to the Corte Madera Chamber of Commerce
Holiday time is here
again, after what seem like
the longest summer ever
with all the warm weather
we’ve had.
This past year our Town
has added some talented,
capable and experienced
employees to our dedicated
Staff. These people have
been made well aware of
the desires of our residents
and the priorities of
our Town’s needs. I’m
confident that you will find
that our Town Council and
Staff are here to serve all of
you, more than ever.
Public Works continues
to keep the Town looking
so beautiful. We were
able to enjoy the hanging
baskets in their profusion
of colors for at least 6
months. The median strips
were in full bloom for
months, as well.
We do have two major
projects which are being
considered. There have
been and will continue
to be many efforts of
outreach by the applicants
so that everyone has a
clear knowledge of what
is being proposed. The
Best Western Corte
Madera Inn is in need
of an untenable amount
of funds for a retrofit:
ADA requirements,
current building codes
and amenities to remain
competitive in the
hospitality industry,
which would necessitate
the construction of a
new hotel. We have the
opportunity to be home
to an upscale hotel and
replace what is beyond its
practical use. I recommend
that you try to attend one
of the outreach meetings.
The longtime owners
and Marin residents are
receptive to any input.
Also, Restoration
Hardware is planning to
apply to build a stand-alone
store at The Village, having
outgrown its current space.
The proposed building
was designed by renowned
architect James Gillam of
Backen, Gillam & Kroeger,
considered to be one of
the foremost architectural
firms in the country today,
recognized for both their
residential and commercial
projects. The project is
forward thinking in terms
of its business model and
has proven to be successful
in several other locations.
To see the conceptual
presentation, I suggest you
go to www.rhcortemadera.
com.
In just a few more days,
we will be celebrating
Corte Madera’s 100th
birthday! Yes, 2016 is
our Centennial year and
exciting events are being
planned throughout the
year. You can welcome in
2016 at the New Year’s Eve
Party on December 31st, to
be held at the Community
Center. Tickets are
available. You can eat,
drink, be merry and dance
to the live music of the
Bay Society. Tickets are
available through the
Lions Club website at
www.e-clubhouse.org/
sites/cortemadera/. Please
check out the Centennial
Website for the upcoming
events that you’ll not
want to miss! www.
cortemadera100.com.
Everyone is encouraged
to participate in the
planning. If you have
any ideas of events you’d
like to participate in or
organize, please email the
Centennial Committee at
cortemadera100@gmail.com
Please don’t forget
to patronize our Corte
Madera merchants. Our
Town is the biggest
resource of retailers and
merchandise around and
parking is free!
May you all enjoy the joys
of the season and I wish you
a very happy and healthy
New Year.

News from Age-Friendly Corte Madera
News Around Town
Age-Friendly Corte Madera
(AFCM) has been active
on many fronts in recent
months. While taking initial
steps to develop a 3-year
Action Plan that will act as a
guide to implement changes
and improvements (based on
findings from the town-wide
senior surveys and continuing
focus groups), there are many
other ongoing endeavors.
AFCM recently partnered
with Rotary Club of Marin
Sunrise to provide a Senior
Service Day for help with
small but daunting household
tasks. Both Rotary volunteers
and beneficiaries declared
the day a success and look
forward to a semiannual
schedule for the event.
LionShare, the CM Lions’
senior service day will also be
provided twice yearly, offering
a total of four opportunities
each year for seniors to get
free help with small projects.
(Phone 415.480.9758 for
help.)
AFCM Co-chair Pati
Stoliar and Town Council
Liaison Carla Condon have
From the Corte Madera Parks
and Recreation Department
been asked to participate in
a brainstorming meeting to
explore the development
of a Twin Cities Village in
partnership with Larkspur.
A number of residents have
expressed a desire for a local
Village; currently the large
Ross Valley Village serves
Corte Madera.
For the first time, AgeFriendly Marin hosted an
information booth at the
October Marin County
Senior Information Fair,
helping familiarize the
whole county with the A-F
concept and encouraging
more participants. AFCM
continues working with
the other Age-Friendly
cities and towns offering
guidance for those Marin
municipalities now seeking
to attain membership in the
WHO Global Network of AgeFriendly Cities. (At this time
only Sausalito, Fairfax and
Corte Madera have achieved
this status.)
Ongoing meetings with
management at our major
shopping centers, Corte
Madera Town Center and
The Village, regarding
AFCM’s suggestions for improvements have been fruitful. And recently, CMPA
Police Chief Todd Cusimano reached out to offer the
R.U.O.K. Program, which
will work together with
AFCM to develop a contact
list of seniors at risk living

News around Town
Message From the
Corte Madera Fire Department
A Holiday Gift Idea
“Looking for a holiday gift
that shows you care? A smoke
alarm is a terrific idea. Nine
out of ten home fire deaths
occur at night when people
are asleep. So this holiday
season, give your friends a
present that protects and
watches over them all year
round....A smoke alarm. A
life-saving gift idea from your
fire department.”
“People gathering together
is the real joy of the holiday
season. Take a few moments to
protect your friends and family
from an unexpected tragedy.
Test the smoke alarms in your
home to make sure they’re
working, and be certain everyone in your family knows and
practices your home fire escape
plan. A holiday message from
your fire department.”
Candle Care
“Candles are a traditional and
beautiful part of the holiday
season. They are also a direct
source of fire in your home,
so be cautious with them.
Use non-flammable holders
and position candles a safe
distance from your Christmas
tree and other holiday decorations. Children are always
fascinated by candles and are
drawn to them, so place yours
safely out of children’s reach.
A holiday message from your
fire department.”
A Fire-Safe Holiday
Christmas Tree Safety
“It’s the holiday season and
time to find just the right
Christmas tree. Look for one
that’s fresh and green. The needles should bend and not snap
between your fingers. At home,
find a cool spot for your tree,
away from heater vents and the
fireplace. A dry tree is a serious
fire hazard, so water yours often. After the holidays, dispose
of the tree safely at a recycling
center or with your pick-up
service. A safety message from
your fire department.”

Santa on the
Firetruck
Look for Santa and his
elves coming to town on
Sunday, December 6th
to hand out candy canes
to all the neighborhood
children. The volunteer
firefighters will put the
siren on to let everyone
know Santa is coming but
it will be hard not to miss
the brightly decorated

is always a big hit as he

canes to the excited
children. The Corte
Madera Chamber, the
