Ametek seals Cognex deal
Ametek Inc has entered into a definitive
agreement to acquire the Surface Inspection
Systems Division (SISD) of Cognex
Corporation. Based in California, SISD develops and
manufactures software-enabled vision systems used
to inspect the surfaces of continuously processed
materials for flaws and defects. Its inline image
processing technology detects, classifies, filters
and maps specific defects over the entire area of
the surface. The SISD business will joins Ametek
as part of its Electronic Instruments Group (EIG),
which manufactures instruments for the process,
aerospace, power and industrial markets.

Cutting tool supplier Cutwel
has introduced the Simturn
C4 tool, which can be
used for internal and external
machining with front mounted
inserts. The multi-purpose system
can be used for operations that
include back turning, grooving,
profiling, parting-off and threading
with Swiss type sliding head
lathes. Shank sizes start from 7
mm, while a range of inserts is
available with cutting depths up to
5.5 mm.
For machine shops producing
parts from many different
materials, the Simturn C4 range
accommodates this by providing
all its inserts in three different
grades. There is a grade for
general applications, another for
stainless steel and heat resistant
super alloy materials, and an
uncoated grade for working on
aluminium and other non-ferrous

distributors’ meeting in
Portugal, Japanese cutting
tool manufacturer Union Tool
presented UK-based Rainford
Precision with an award for
the largest sales growth by
a distributor in 2014. The

Fond farewell
Haco Kingsland has said
goodbye to its longest
serving employee, Richard
'Dick' Whittingham, who has
retired. Mr Whittingham joined
Kingsland in 1966 and clocked
up a huge 49 years of service.
In that time, not only did he
become one of the company’s
best turners, but also watched
Haco Kingsland grow and
change. "Kingsland was a small
operation when I first arrived,
but the factory has doubled in
size, and we're producing a lot
more machinery and tooling
now,” he says. Mr Whittingham
will now turn his attention to
travelling and refurbishing
vintage motorcycles.

First HTEC showroom
opens in Africa
Haas Automation now has its
first Haas Technical Education
Centre (HTEC) showroom in
Africa, at the Institute of Aeronautics
and Airport Logistics (ISMALA) in
Casablanca, Morocco. Opened a
year ago, the ISMALA is one of
more than 300 similar resources in
Morocco, created to prepare young
people for work in growth sectors
of the nation’s economy. More than
100 of the world’s top aerospace
parts manufacturers have a
presence in Morocco.

and performed jointly by
representatives from the ISMALA,
the OFPPT, Haas Automation
Europe, and the local Haas

Biggest and
best DIMF yet
Delcam has created a section for technical
tips on the website for its FeatureCAM featurebased programming software. More than 80
tips are listed in the new section, which aims to help
users with all aspects of FeatureCAM programming,
including milling, drilling, turning, creating geometry,
simulation and generating NC code. Each tip is saved
as a PDF file that can be read online or downloaded
for future use. The tips complement the videos that
are produced for the FeatureCAM ‘Learning Zone’,
which demonstrate the extra functionality added to
each new release of the software.

Doosan Infracore’s 10th DIMF Show
(Doosan International Machine Tool Fair)
held in Busan, Korea last month proved to
be the biggest and best yet with 5700 Doosan
dealers, distributors, academics and Doosan
officials, and over 800 international visitors
attending the event. Among the attendees was a
delegation of senior managers from Mills CNC,
the exclusive distributor of Doosan machine tools
in the UK and Ireland. Some 83 Doosan machines
were exhibited including 17 new machines and 33
upgraded models.

Darex, the US

Designated XPS-16+, it can
process two-fluted HSS, cobalt,

split point geometries and

Munich-based MTU Aero
Engines, which develops,
produces and supplies
components for civil and military
aircraft engines (as well as for
power generation gas turbines),
has started using parts made by
additive manufacturing (AM) for
the series production of nickel
alloy borescope bosses. They form
part of the turbine housing for the
Airbus A320neo's GTF engine and
allow the blading to be inspected
at intervals for wear and damage
using an endoscope, which in
the aerospace sector is termed a
borescope. Previously, the bosses
were cast or milled from solid.
It was the cost advantages
of using EOS technology that
proved the decisive factor in
adopting AM for this application,
both in the development stages
and in production. The Pratt &
Whitney PW1100G-JM is the first
aero engine to be equipped with
borescope bosses produced by
AM.
Preparations for series
production have now begun.
A total of 16 parts per build
are envisaged, totalling up
to 2000 parts per year. The

In early 2014, Italian
rapid prototyping and AM
bureau, Spring Srl, based in
Monteviale, near Venice, decided
to reverse-engineer components
in-house instead of subcontracting
the work. After a thorough market
analysis, the company bought
a seven-axis CNC articulated
measuring arm and digital laser
scanning head from Nikon
Metrology. The equipment not
only allows Spring’s customers’
parts to be digitised quickly and
accurately for reverse engineering
and 3D printing, but also greatly
enhances the capabilities of
the bureau’s quality control
department.
Roberto Toniello, the
company’s co-founder and head
of the engineering department,
says: “The Nikon equipment allows
us to meet even more efficiently
the needs and demands of our
customers, so we can offer a
more integrated, comprehensive,
accurate service in shorter leadtimes and ensure maximum
reliability of results.”
If a product needs to be
reproduced but the CAD model
does not exist or the original
part has been modified, it is
necessary to reverse-engineer
an actual component. Processing
of scan data is carried out by
Spring’s technical office using
Geomagic Studio, which imports
the raw point cloud data acquired
using Nikon Metrology’s Focus
Handheld software. The point
with previously established
manufacturing processes is
expected to be in double figures,
and although the quality level is
already high, MTU and EOS are
working together to optimise the
finish of the component surface.
As MTU is a producer of raw
materials, the company has been
able to develop a new process
chain, which has been integrated
into the manufacturing system. It is
underpinned by a control system
developed specifically by MTU,
where online monitoring captures
each production step and layer.
"The borescope bosses for
the low pressure turbines of the
A320neo's GTF engine were ideal
for AM,” says Dr Karl-Heinz Dusel,
director of rapid technologies at
MTU. “They are small components
riveted to the turbine housing that
create openings, allowing technicians
to check the condition of turbine
blades inside the engine. We see a
lot of potential for the manufacture of
further series components for aero
engine construction, such as bearing
housings and turbine aerofoils, both
of which need to meet high demands
in terms of safety and reliability."

cloud data is reverse-engineered
into accurate surface, polygon
and native CAD models. These
are exported to one of Spring’s
10 CAD seats of Pro Engineer
and Unigraphics NX, where STL
files are generated for driving six
additive manufacturing machines
on site. Two are large 3D printers
with build volumes of 900 x 600
x 900 mm, making Spring one
of the few Italian companies that
can produce objects of that size
using additive manufacturing. The
machines produce components
from thermoplastic materials, layer
by layer.
Once the parts have been
built, they are inspected using the
scanning equipment to determine
their accuracy, using either the
laser head or an interchangeable
touch probe, or both in a mixed
measuring routine. Software
from Nikon Metrology provides
the measurement and analysis
environment, with intuitive tools
for both laser and tactile scanning
applications. The scanner is in fact
used for two-thirds of the time as a
metrology tool.

scheme boosts AM
The Additive Manufacturing
Products Division of Renishaw
is reaping the benefits of the
company's specialised internal
training scheme, which is called
the Applications Academy.
The Applications Academy was
established in 2010 as the result
of the company’s assessment of
its future business requirements.
Renishaw identified a growing
demand for applications engineers
and acted to create a dedicated
training programme.
The academy recruits
promising graduates who then
spend 21 months training to
become applications engineers.
The programme includes a three
month induction that all graduates
joining the company complete,
followed by three placements into
different Renishaw divisions.
Upon completing the
Applications Academy programme,
graduates should have an
excellent grasp of engineering
principles, a good understanding
of manufacturing processes,
methods and techniques, as well
as excellent communication and
business skills. A career within
the applications stream can lead
to positions such as senior or
principle applications engineer,
or even managerial positions like
Canon Europe, a specialist
in imaging solutions, has
announced a distribution
agreement with 3D Systems, a
provider of 3D printing technology.
Under the arrangement, Canon
is now marketing, selling and
supporting 3D Systems’ 3D
printers, including the ProJet 1200,
3500 series, 4500, 6000 and 7000
in the UK and Ireland, with a view
to rolling out across Europe.
Through the partnership,
customers will have access to 3D
Systems’ 3D printing technology
underpinned by Canon’s service
and support. The partnership
reflects Canon’s ongoing growth
strategy of expansion into new
technology domains that deliver
value to its customer base,
and builds on the 3D Systems
distribution agreement with Canon
Marketing Japan announced in
March 2014.
Focusing on prototyping
for rapid product development,
Canon will offer the 3D printers to
its customer base in the UK and
Ireland, across the engineering,
manufacturing and architectural
market segments. Enabled by
advances in technology and driven
by demand from the manufacturing
sector for increased production
efficiencies and customisation,
the 3D printing market is growing
rapidly. Research and advisory
company, Gartner, has predicted
that end-user spending on 3D
applications or operations manager.
Demand for the programme
is at an all-time high and last
year Renishaw doubled its intake
of graduates. The success of
Renishaw’s Applications Academy
is reflected in how fast graduates
are being snapped up by divisions
of the engineering firm upon
completing the course.
Since 2010, 35 candidates
have graduated from the academy,
based at Renishaw's headquarters
in New Mills, Gloucestershire.
Among them is Charlie Birkett,
who has already secured a
place at the company's Additive
Manufacturing Products Division in
Stone, Staffordshire.
"I graduated from Exeter
University as a mechanical
engineer and was lucky enough to
be accepted into the Applications
Academy," he says. "Engineering
at university was very different to
actually working in the industry.

role is very practical, rather than
theory based. When I learned
of an opening at the additive
manufacturing division in Stone,
I leapt at the chance to work with
some of the most innovative and

Laser metal deposition
system unveiled
Cybaman Technologies has
introduced its laser direct
metal deposition system,
which is based upon the Cybaman
digital manufacturing platform.
The six-axis machine, originally
designed as a high precision
subtractive machining system, now
has the capability to operate as
an AM system, using laser direct
metal deposition, or as a hybrid
additive and subtractive machining
system.
The Cybaman digital
manufacturing system, with its
patented workpiece manipulation
concept, makes a good platform
for laser direct metal deposition as
it enables the deposition process
to remain in sympathy with
gravity at all times, eliminating the
need for building supports even
on components which require
constant changes in orientation.
As opposed to additive layer
manufacturing systems, which
require specialist metal powders,
the Cybaman concept uses a
range of readily available standard
metal wires to achieve volume
deposition from a novel nozzle
system.

fused metal deposition, enables
the Cybaman system to produce

exterior plastic parts, including the
large front and back panels, door
panels, bumper systems, side
skirts, wheel arches, lamp masks,
and a few interior parts such as
the retainer instrument board and
a host of smaller components.
Parts were 3D printed using
Stratasys' Digital ABS material,
enabling the engineering team to
build a prototype car that could
perform in strenuous testing
environments to the same level
as a vehicle made of traditionally
manufactured parts. The
StreetScooter was developed by
the Production of Engineering of
E-Mobility Components (PEM) at
Aachen University. It has a range
of 100 km and delivers a top
speed of 100 km/h.
Throughout the development
of the StreetScooter C16, the
Objet 1000 was used for making
prototype parts, as well as end-use
manufactured parts and production
tools in the final development
stages. The system's 1000 x 800
x 500 mm build tray gave it the
ability to 3D print a full range of
real components directly from a
computer model, with functional
properties that have been shown
to be largely equivalent to
conventionally produced wrought
and cast alloys. Build materials
currently include steels, steel
alloys and titanium.
Cybaman says that innovative
features of the design include
the ability to achieve high
volume deposition with multiple
wires of the same type or mix
different metals during the
process to allow the deposition
of alloys. Precision control over
the individual wire feed units
guarantee repeatable results in
terms of deposition rate, volume
and material mix, in the case of
alloys. Power for the deposition
process comes in the form of a
400 W SPI water cooled fibre
laser, with options available for
higher power lasers if required.
The 250 mm3 working volume,
is complemented with typical
deposition rates of between 10 and
150 cm3/hr, fast when compared to
typical additive layer manufacturing
deposition rates of between 2 and
20 cm3/hr, in multiple layers of
20 to 80 μm depending upon the
system, material and application.

Startrite Factory Rebuilt Vertical Bandsaws

From the 1950’s Startrite built solid engineered vertical bandsaws, we are now pleased to
offer these machines factory rebuilt to original specification.
We take late built saws and completely strip the machine to the frame; this is then shot
blasted and powder coated.
All mechanical components are chemically cleaned and examined. All worn parts are
replaced and bearings, oil seals, belts are renewed. The top surface of the work table is
reground.
The machine is then rebuilt with the motor and electrics renewed. Final build includes new
band wheels, guards and the guides system of your choice. The saw is then test run to ensure
correct operation.
As we are the manufacturers of Startrite original spares, you can be assured that our rebuilt
machines are of the same quality as original factory built machines, giving you years of
trouble free sawing.
If we do not have the machine specification you require in stock or you prefer to have your
own machine rebuilt, we can do this for you with a loan machine available upon request.
