welcome!
Hello and welcome to the fourth annual Lewes OctoberFeast. Once again we have lined up a
veritable smorgasbord of unique and original events for your enjoyment and delectation. Our
beautiful town of Lewes provides the perfect backdrop for ten days of food- and drink-focused
events that highlight the wonderful local, seasonal and sustainable produce available from the
South East.
First and foremost, we are here for a party. But like all the best celebrations, there is a serious
point behind OctoberFeast, and nowhere has that point been better made than during the recent
horsemeat scandal. As the biggest food producers and retailers in the world unveiled the results of
DNA tests, we discovered that widespread adulteration of the food supply was a global business
affecting not the squalid market squares of impoverished third world countries, but the gleaming
aisles of supermarkets, under the labels of some of the largest multinational food companies.
I appreciate that not everyone wants every little detail about the beef on their plate; but I do
think that insisting that it had a happy life, a stress-free death and a guarantee that it was,
actually, a cow, is a fair expectation.
Faced with multinational food producers who don’t know what goes into their own lasagnes and
billion-pound retailers who don’t actually know what it is they are selling, the value of buying
from local businesses who are on first name terms with all of their suppliers couldn’t be clearer.
So the message from OctoberFeast is this: small is good; independent businesses don’t use
mechanically recovered slurry in sausages or meat from 101 different animals in a single burger.
Support our local farmers, producers, brewers, winemakers, retailers, restaurateurs and publicans
and they’ll make sure the food that you eat is the best it can possibly be!

Apple Press
Apple pressing returns to the Market Tower in 2013 and, to make up for last year, the harvest this
year is forecast to be very good. So all those children who’ve been monitoring their apple trees this
summer to help us create a map of the apple trees in Lewes be sure to keep some back for pressing
and everyone else with an apple tree or two or more be sure to take the opportunity in October to
avoid waste and to enjoy your own, freshest of apple juice. If you’re willing to volunteer some time
to help with the pressing, please contact mark@tasteandflavour.co.uk.
Pressing sessions will be at the Market Tower on Saturday, 28th Sept, Sunday 29th, and Saturday
5th October, from 10am - 4.pm. Donations of 50p per litre.

Harvest Festival
St Thomas à Becket Church, CLIFFE, 11AM
A short service of Thanksgiving for Harvest that is always
very well attended by locals, Harveys devotees and Morris
sides. Thomas á Becket is the patron saint of brewers and
his armorial bearings are incorporated into the arms of
the Brewers’ Company to this day. Hops & barley decorate
the church and Sussex Harmony Gallery Choir sing
anthems in Georgian dress.
All are welcome but arrive early to be assured of a seat.

Always a popular and exciting event – time to welcome
