FLEXA Life To the test Before a FLEXA bed hits the market, it’s tests aplenty In living colour London-based trend specialist Anne-Lise Kjaer spills it all The underlying facts COMPACT Why FLEXA’s children’s mattresses are much more than just regular mattresses 1 A New Look but still all about children Welcome to the first issue of FLEXA Life, our new FLEXA concept catalogue. In this issue we showcase the many possibilities of our flexible system, but it’s not all products. We also spice things up with interesting stories from real life “bed crash tester” and a prominent London trend specialist, Anne-Lise Kjaer. The result, we think, is the perfect inspirational tool for setting up a dream room for your child. And that’s what it’s all about really. Children living, growing and thriving, that has always been our inspiration! For more than 35 years now, we have been manufacturing tailor-made furniture for children – always with emphasis on quality, creativity and safety. Why? Because at FLEXA, we want to give loving parents all around the globe the possibility to create a special place for their children. A place where there are no limits to the imagination. A place to grow! Enjoy Henning Lykke Jensen Founder of FLEX A Please note that this brochure is only intended as a guide. And one of these, the TÜV-test, is perhaps the toughest in the business. Horst Niesobski is a “crash tester” at TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH and he reveals the brutal truth. “We receive the bed from FLEXA, just like any consumer would receive it. We then unpack it and each piece of wood is checked for insect damage, mould, and splinters. Then we…” Horst goes on for quite some time, so to sum it all up: everything is examined thoroughly – slats, every joint, every bolt, every corner; even the size of boreholes and the distance between ladder steps are inspected. The checklist is a mile long and nothing goes unnoticed. Horst continues: “Next we check the assembly instructions, they have to live up to certain standards, next we assemble the bed according to them, checking if all bits and pieces are there in the process. Once fully assembled, we check every single gap size to make sure that no child can get stuck, and then we leave the bed alone to “acclimatize” for fourteen days.” After that the real fun begins. Now every conceivable scenario is re-enacted; every possible situation involving one child, two children etc. is simulated: “We strap the bed into a specially made frame and perform a long series of tests, always with much more force than any normal use would ever subject the bed to. For example: the bed frame is subjected to 100 kg of pressure in seven different places; hydraulic arms twist and turn the bed in every direction and we perform a dynamic test with a force of 100 Newton 10,000 times on the...” 08-156 8 We’ll stop before it gets too technical, but suffice to say our bed is exposed to its fair share of knocks and bruises, over and over again. To Horst quality is serious business, much like us – just good enough is not good enough. He explains: PROFILE TUV is an internationally recognized test institute obski horst snhites ester’’ ‘‘Cra with departm ents in 53 countries an d 12.800 employees w orldwide. They test pro ducts accord ing to strict Euro pean and international standards. “If there is something we find the least bit unsatisfying, even though it is within official standards, we contact FLEXA to work out a solution. It is in fact a continuous process where we work closely together to make the safest quality bed possible.” However, once our bed has passed all tests, we have not seen the last of Horst. He inspects our production facility to make sure we can actually produce all beds exactly like the approved test bed, and he follows up each year. Only then can he issue our quality certificate. Yes, it may be brutal, but it is necessary when superior quality and maximum safety are two of FLEXA’s most important promises to you. crash tes t FLEXA bed 9 Accessorize! Our s according are classified than age. to weight rather Bec that childre ause we know n of age come the same in shapes an many d sizes. A good night’s sleep is essential for our well-being and this is no less true when it comes to children. In fact studies show that sleep is vital for the growth and general health of children. And when it comes down to a healthy sleep, the importance of the mattress cannot be underestimated. We know this and for a long time we have researched children’s resting and sleeping habits in relation to different mattress types. This has helped us to identify the different ways that children need to be supported as they sleep – knowledge we have transformed into healthy and durable mattresses. But how do you know if your child is sleeping on the right mattress? Well you will know if it is the wrong one! If your child tosses and turns through the night, or complains of stiffness or aches in the morning, look to the mattress it may be your prime suspect. But first, rule out all other possible causes: check that the room is not too hot or too cold, then make sure that the lighting is just right and that your child’s pyjamas are not too tight. If all these things are as they should be and your child is otherwise healthy, you may need a new mattress. But no sweat, choosing the right mattress is easy with FLEXA. Our mattresses are classified according to weight rather than age. Because we know that children of the same age come in many shapes and sizes. So just weigh your child and pick the mattress of your dreams. NB! Because of the weight difference, we do not advise that grown-ups test a children’s mattress. 09-320 14 GOOD NIGHTS The underlying facts FLEXA’s children’s mattresses are developed in close co-operation with specialists to ensure maximum support, comfort and durability. I guess that yellow is the new must have colour. The Pantone Colour Mimosa is forecast to be big. But I personally think that green and turquoise will be as strong – alongside grey and whites as they bring a lovely calm to the palette. But why is colour so important? Colour is an important part of human expression and we all relate to colour emotionally. How, depends on culture, country and personal conviction as most people have personal preference and a story related to their favourite colour. However, we are often not aware of the importance of colour in our daily life. They make a huge impact on our mood and can evoke emotions and feelings. In fact some colours can stimulate your mood in all directions. From being more creative, energetic or even to de-stress. So what should one take into consideration, colour-wise, when decorating children’s rooms? First of all you should keep in mind that a small space will need a lighter colour to make it feel more spacious and a larger room can carry darker colours or a wall of your favorite theme. Then consider what feelings you want to evoke. Red is exiting and stimulating, it’s associated with strength, activity and warmth and can stimulate conversation and interaction. So not a good colour, if you want your child to calm down and relax. Blue is good for relaxing, being calm and comfortable. It’s a great colour for a room where you need to focus – like when doing homework. Green is all about nature and growth and to have one green wall is great for inspiration and flow. But my best advice is to experiment with colours and involve your children. Life is play and you can always change the colour back again. And in the end it’s all down to personal taste and lifestyle. Speaking of lifestyle, can you reveal some children’s lifestyle trends for the coming year? Now that we all have our expensive designer kitchen and wellness area it’s time to turn our attention to the children’s room. It’s about taking out time to create an inspirational environment for children to thrive in. I feel that involving the children in co-creating their own personal space will be a trend we will see more of in the future. Multifunctional and co-creation are the most important lifestyle trends and good quality sustainable materials made to last will show the way ahead. We could not agree more and leave Anne-Lise Kjaer to do what she does best: spot trends. !
