State of the Ark
What progress has been made! I am proud to share so many wonderful updates since our last issue. But before I
start, it’s always a good reminder to remember where we came from, and why. Noah Homes was created in 1983 with a mission
of ensuring all people with developmental disabilities have a quality, lifelong home.
The addition of two of the first memory care homes in the nation will make room for 20 more people to call Noah Homes their
lifelong home, but that still leaves many more without one. While we would love to take everyone in, we’ve run out of space in
Spring Valley. In true Noah spirit, that wasn’t a reason to give up. I’m now flying everywhere from the California State Capitol to
the National Capitol, building awareness on budget issues, aging issues, general care and more. I’m meeting many new advocates
for our cause and partnering with everyone who shares our vision.
Our work in Sacramento at the Lanterman Coalition has resulted in both the Senate and Assembly passing a two-bill package that
will provide over $400 million a year of extra funds for people with developmental disabilities, and the people who serve and
care for them. This is not yesterday’s news, though. This is tomorrow’s hope for a stabilized and renewed system, marking the end
of a five-year fight, and letting nearly 300,000 people with developmental disabilities live and thrive in their communities.
And right here back at home, construction is well under way on the homes that could potentially serve as a national model of
memory care specifically for people with developmental disabilities. We want to make sure our residents and our staff remain
a best practice model of care, and we are able to do that because of support from you. Right now we are only $1 million from
making this dream a reality and fully funding our Join the Journey Capital Campaign. I want to reach through this letter and hug
everyone who has already contributed. If you have anything left to give, now is the time.
I want to be clear, this capital campaign is a one-time cost and is completely separate from the funds we raise each year to make
up the 35% deficit between our costs and reimbursements from state and federal funds. We will never sacrifice quality to save on
expenses and we don’t have to as long as we continue to get support from our generous community. If you are only able to give
once this year, we ask that you continue to donate to our annual funds. We don’t want the capital campaign to take away from
our current needs, and the steadfast philosophy of a debt free Noah Homes. Hopefully one day, we will be able to grow our
endowment to a point that we do not have to rely on the ever fluctuating and always underfunded state and federal budget.
For now, we celebrate you and others like you, such as Colette Gerard, the Mulvaney Family, Gail Sullivan, Joan Bear and Laureen
Amberg – all of whom you will read about in this issue. You are the reason we were able to welcome our new residents Jessica,
Phillip and Natasha. You are the reason an outing isn’t simply going across the street, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime cruise, music therapy,
dance classes or even a trip to Hawaii. You are the reason I get to see so many smiling faces every day.

Where in the World is Molly? ... Speaking Up
for Those Who Can’t
N
oah’s fearless leader, CEO Molly Nocon, is going full speed, working to ensure not only the residents of
Noah Homes, but all people with developmental disabilities have a quality, lifelong home. Here’s a short
round up of her travels in March 2016:
Molly was selected to serve on the California Health and Human Services State Alzheimer’s Disease and
Related Disorders Advisory Committee. In this role, she will meet quarterly in Sacramento to share her
expertise in working with community partners to ensure quality care options are available to people with
developmental disabilities who are facing Alzheimer’s. The first meeting was held March 9 and included
representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association California Council, California Department of Aging,
California Health and Human Services and other committee members.
On March 11, two days after her meetings in Sacramento on Alzheimer’s, Molly returned to meet with the
Lanterman Coalition regarding state funding needs for all people with developmental disabilities. This year,
Coalition members are working to educate the public and the legislature regarding the impact of long-term
underfunding and the ability of the system to keep the promise of the Lanterman Act to nearly 300,000

Next, Molly traveled to Washington DC on April 3 to meet with Health and Human Services Community Living to discuss how to
serve caregivers in San Diego, and to get a better understanding of how Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will work
with caregivers to navigate new regulations and qualifications for matching funds.
Straight from DC, she flew to North Carolina to speak at the Down Syndrome Affiliates in Action Conference. This annual event
brings leaders from across the country tangible networking opportunities and valuable resources they can use to improve their
service delivery for people with Down syndrome, from visionary ideas to practical management tips.
In honor of World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, Molly traveled virtually to participate as a speaker in the Global Virtual
321eLearning Conference. This was an opportunity for families, educators and researchers from around the world to connect, share,
and learn about Down syndrome.

Top Model Tim’s Fashion Debut
T
here is something special trending in fashion and pop culture, from contestants on The
Voice, to the Homecoming Queen at Coronado High School: People are celebrating
uniqueness and a sense of “doing good.” They are no longer focusing on disability, but
rather ability!
Based out of Vista, Fashion Stork was founded in 2013 and is a men’s subscription based
styling service that sends clothing specifically suited to an individual’s taste. In their

In addition to this shoot, FashionStork also donates $1 from every package to a family
working to adopt a child and to date, they have raised over $95,000.

camera. He loves telling people about his experience and is always up for a photo, so

Cruisin’ to Central America
W
ith California’s winter in full swing, six residents from Noah Homes along with two staff
members decided to flee to sunny Central America on a seven day cruise with Carnival
Freedom. There were three stops along the way, in Honduras, Belize and Cozumel, where the
girls enjoyed shopping and private city tours thanks to Joan Bear, who generously donated to
help fund the fun.
The girls took full advantage of the ships activities, enjoying the music, nightly shows, dancing and
karaoke where Leona, Mary and Raquel won awards for great renditions of their favorite songs.
Staff member Kim Lober stated “We had the best time! The ladies enjoyed every minute of the
cruise.”
From buffets to virgin piña coladas, to relaxing in the hot tub, there was not a dull moment
for the group. Thank you to all who made this special trip possible, especially Joan Bear. Our
residents look forward to these wonderful vacations.

In Loving Memory of Joan Bear
I
t is with great sadness that we say a fond farewell to longtime Noah family member Joan Bear,
mother of resident Franny. Joan was always enthusiastically supportive of Noah Homes campaigns
and fundraisers, making generous donations towards the homes where Franny has lived and helping
fund special vacations that Franny and her housemates were planning. Joan was always the first to
volunteer to support the needs of the staff as well.
Joan was preceded by her dear husband of 51 years, Deacon Benjamin L. “Ted” Bear, Jr. Joan was the mother of 13
children, grandmother of 15 and great grandmother of two. Deeply faith filled, she was a fervent advocate for life and
the unborn. Joan leaves an enormous legacy behind. She passed away surrounded by her family at her home in Del Mar on
March 30, 2016. A Catholic liturgy celebrating Joan’s life was held at St. James Church in Solana Beach on April 15. Joan
will be dearly missed.

hat started as a Sage family / Nice Guy’s BBQ and a Jim
Mulvaney Sr. Concert on the Green has become a beloved Noah
Homes annual tradition! Bring your friends and dance the night away at
the 2016 Noah Homes Summerfest Concert and BBQ on the Green June
25th. Celebrate the season with the awesome sounds of Ron’s Garage
and fabulous auction items. The Nice Guys of San Diego are serving
up delicious tri-tip and chicken BBQ that we recommend pairing with
tastings from local breweries in your very own commemorative tasting
glass.
And of course, all of this fun benefits Noah Homes and will enable us
to support people with developmental disabilities in living independent
and productive lives in a community environment that fosters dignity and

ALOHA FROM HAWAII
F
rom Central America to Las Vegas to Spring Training in Arizona, Noah Homes residents are always going on exciting adventures.
This year was no different as a group of guys escorted by a few lucky staff members took a trip across the Pacific Ocean to
Hawaii for an entire week.
Thanks to the help of Alaska Airlines and Hilton Hotels, the guys were busy
enjoying luaus, beautiful beaches and delicious food! Noah Ambassador Richard
Neves was meeting and greeting new friends on the beautiful beach, and Florida
vacationer’s Bill and Summer were so impressed, they invited the entire group
out for ice cream. “This is truly our pleasure to do something for such a wonderful
group of people. We are so impressed to hear about their home, and see them
having so much fun in Hawaii,” they said.
One of the highlights according to Kim Keane was “the visit to Pearl Harbor and
the Arizona Memorial. Our guys remembered their dads and others who served
our country. It was a very moving experience for them.”

Phillip from Casa de Palmas said his favorite excursion was “the Luau and the
hula girls. They are great dancers and we loved learning the hula with them.” All
of the residents said they needed a break from their routine, love the adventure and, just like any other family, we try to take fun
vacations as much as possible!
Our special thanks to John and Colleen Garbaczewski, the Philip Mayr Trust, and the Crawford, Neves, and Riemann families for
their financial assistance to make this trip possible. Noah Homes is also grateful to the Parker Foundation for their grant, giving more
residents access to outings that would otherwise not be possible.
New Bus for Many Adventures
N
oah Homes is excited to announce that it will be a recipient of a new bus, thanks
to a federal grant through Caltrans that is valued at $108,000. The bus will be
custom built in Indiana to meet the specific needs of the residents, and then delivered to
Noah Homes. The development staff worked tirelessly to apply and file for this grant,
which had many requirements in order to qualify and has a lengthy reporting process.
Next steps include collaborating with Caltrans to design the interior of the bus to
maximize seating capacity and wheelchair accessibility. The process will take
9 to 12 months. Thank you to Caltrans for this incredible support!

In Loving Memory of Gail Sullivan
I
n December, Noah Homes lost a beloved friend, supporter and former board president,
Gail Gay Sullivan. Gail lived a wonderful life centered in giving and dedicated service to
others, including the Noah Homes board of directors from 2011 to 2013 and as president of
the board in 2012 and 2013.
Since her time at Noah Homes, Gail had been serving on the board of directors at the San
Diego Youth Symphony & Conservatory beginning in May of 2014. Gail also was the CFO of
Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego since 2009.
Gail had a passion for music and the arts and strongly believed that both enrich our lives. She
was a devoted member of the Folk Group at Mission San Diego de Alcala for 30 years and advocated for supporting
music and the arts in the school system.
Gail was truly a light in this world and her legacy will live on in her friends, family and all those she touched in her
lifetime. She passed away suddenly on December 31, 2015 of arrhythmic cardiac failure. Her personal church community
held a mass in January at the St. Francis Center at the San Diego Mission de Alcala, where Gail was an integral
member for decades. A Celebration of Life took place on April 9 at the Ronald McDonald House. Please refer to
CelebrateGailSullivan@gmail.com for more information. The staff and residents of Noah Homes will dearly miss Gail.
Training Others on Quality Care
B
ecause people with developmental disabilities are now
living long enough to deal with issues related to aging,
there is a need for caregivers to receive new training related
to dementia. Noah Homes partnered with the National Task
Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia to host the first
NTG Training in Southern California on April 20-22.
Although we are at capacity with 90 people with
developmental disabilities under our care, we can continue our
mission of ensuring everyone with a disability has a quality,
lifelong home by sharing our knowledge and training others.
We are confident that this training will become a national
standard in caretaking and are proud to be a part of the
educational growth. Our thanks to our sponsoring community
partners, Alzheimer’s San Diego, San Diego Regional Center
and St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center whose financial assistance
made this first of its kind training possible in San Diego.
The class listens intently to industry experts in our community center.
The first two days targeted staff members who work directly
with adults with developmental disabilities in aging-related health care and disability-related agencies. The day was highly
interactive and highlighted the basic concepts of caring for an adult with an intellectual disability and dementia. The third day was
devoted to understanding and delivering the full NTG Dementia Capable Care Curriculum. These trainers will have full access to
expanding modules and manuals, and can continue their education through different webinars. After they have gone through the
training, they may also hold training for their own staff.

An Amazing Gift from an Amazing Angel
B
uilding our new memory care homes has been a large focus of our fundraising efforts this year. We have seen incredible
support from our families, friends and community. We are pleased to highlight our dear friend and Noah Family member,
Colette Gerard, who is making a future gift of an estimated $2.5 million!
Colette’s son, Andre is a young man with autism who loves basketball,
bowling, music and the outdoors, and has an insatiable sweet tooth! He
lives in Casa de Felicidad and enjoys his life here at Noah with his many
new friends.
“I never thought I would be able to do something like this, but we have
been working for so long and it’s so nice to be able to do this,” said
Colette. “Besides, I am getting older and Andre is in a very nice place,
and I want him to be able to stay there.”
Colette has been a longtime member of the Noah Homes family and we
are forever grateful for her support. Her legacy makes a huge impact in
our effort to ensure that no person with a developmental disability is left
without a loving, lifelong home. For these reasons and more, we are also
happy to name her the Noah’s Ark Angel Donor of the Year.

Our Luck of The Irish
W
e are lucky to have lovely Morgan as a resident at Noah Homes and have
come to know her family well over the years.
The Mulvaney family has been a huge supporter of Noah Homes and Jim Mulvaney
Sr. was the inspiration for the initial Concert on the Green, where the Irish rock
band Skelpin performed as the residents danced along. The Mulvaneys have since
become the emcees and title sponsor of our summer fundraiser each year and we
look forward to seeing them again at the Summerfest on June 25th.
Always going above and beyond, when the Mulvaney family learned of the
Memory Care Homes initiative, they pledged $200,000 for the project and
presented a check to CEO Molly Nocon in February. Thank you for your enormous
generosity and devotion to Morgan, Noah Homes and its mission, and for
encouraging others to follow in your passion of giving for these special adults!

$1 Million Away from Funding the Forever Homes
M
ore than 100 Noah Homes supporters gathered on
March 29 at the construction site of the new memory
care homes to celebrate the start of the vertical build,
meaning the framing was going up.
Some of the very important people who made the project
possible ceremoniously signed the framing and shortly
after everyone else joined in, so that it can be forever
remembered – the community made this happen, and
it is one of the first in the nation to do so. Adults with
developmental disabilities and memory issues will soon have
a place to live. We should all be proud!
After announcing the $6.7 million project in January 2015,
Noah Homes partnered with HomeAid San Diego and home
builders Brookfield Residential, CalAtlantic and Murfey
Construction to find more than 35 building and business
partners, generating over $1 million in donated professional
services, labor and materials. This was complemented by
community donations and grants totaling $4.7 million, leaving
Noah Homes with $1 million left to fundraise before the homes are completed.

The two 5,000+ square-foot homes will each house 10 residents, who will benefit from state-of-the-art technology, access to
national research, and opportunities to participate in groundbreaking new techniques to fight Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other
aging struggles. Noah Homes turned to Dr. Michael Rafii and his team at the UC San Diego Down Syndrome Center for Research
and Treatment for input on the design of the new homes and the programming that will take place inside once they are built. The
homes are scheduled to open in early 2017.

Building Once, Asking Twice
T
he generous future gift of $2.5 million from Colette Gerard has
sparked up quite the celebration, and also a lot of questions about
what exactly that means. Here are some quick Q&As to help better
understand. Mary Bones, Marketing and Development Manager, is

Q: Didn’t you get a $2.5 million gift from Colette Gerard?
A: Yes and no. We received a generous commitment from Colette Gerard for a 73 percent future interest in the sale of a 25-unit
apartment building, valued as a donation of approximately $2.5 million. This trust will provide Colette with a lifetime income and
the balance of the trust will then pass to Noah Homes. Therefore, this will not be applied to the Capital Campaign
Q: You’ve raised $5.7 million in about a year – isn’t Colette’s donation more than enough to finish?
A: No. We need $6.7 million for our capital campaign,
which includes one-time costs to build two new memory
care homes, make improvements to grounds and build
an endowment for the additional staff needed once the
homes open. These costs are all accounted for within
the “Join the Journey Capital Campaign,” which is $1
million from being totally funded. We are happy to
say that the funds from Colette’s trust will one day help
provide for the future needs of Noah Homes. All of this
is completely separate from our annual fundraising to
cover the 35% funding gap between state and federal
funds and operational expenses.
Q: What is the difference between a capital
campaign and annual fundraising?
A: Annual gifts help us live day to day and capital
gifts help us grow. Donations are accepted throughout
the year, every year, to help fund operations and
these expenses do not go away during a capital
campaign. Annual funding supports things such as staff
salaries, weekend outings for the residents, utilities,
transportation, vehicle and house maintenance, insurance, and more. Gifts to the capital campaign are one-ime gifts (sometimes
payable over 3-5 years) that go towards funding the two new memory care homes and related improvements.
Q: What is a charitable remainder trust?
A: A charitable remainder trust (CRT) is an irrevocable trust typically funded with highly appreciated property. The CRT is
structured so that there is a current beneficiary who is either the donor or a named individual and a remainder beneficiary, which is
a qualified charity, such as a private foundation or nonprofit organization like Noah Homes.
“The inclusion of a charitable remainder trust into an estate plan provides tremendous financial and tax benefits to the donor, while
creating a legacy and furthering the cause of his or her favorite charity,” said Jim Provencher, president of Noah Homes board of
directors and estate planning attorney. “Unfortunately, because of their complexity, the benefits of charitable remainder trusts are
not always properly explained to a potential donor.”
Once the benefits are made clear and better understood, the decision to use a Charitable Remainder Trust is easy. If you have
appreciated property you would consider for a CRT, or a tax burden you are unable to fulfill, the sale of an appreciated property
could be a good solution, leaving your cash flow greatly improved and a legacy opportunity that would benefit others into
perpetuity. CRTs are nontaxable to the nonprofit recipient.

A big welcome to Jessica, a beautiful new young lady in Casa Delight who joined
the Noah family in May of 2015. She is Terri’s roommate and all the gals in Delight
enjoy this new addition to their home. Jessica loves to watch movies, play on her
iPad and listen to music on YouTube. She is very happy to be a recipient of a
communication grant, which has enabled her to have a text-to-speech application
on her iPad. Jessica also enjoys coloring in her spare time. She is super helpful to
her housemates and regularly packs lunches and assists in the kitchen. Jessica is a
great addition to Casa Delight and is always happy and loving to her housemates.
She participates in the St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center day program. Jessica is the
eldest of four girls in her family.
Phillip C.
Casa de Flores got a spark of energy when Phillip joined their family in June 2015!
Phillip has a big personality, is friendly and fun to be with and loves electronics and
gadgets of all kinds. He enjoys sports, plays basketball, runs track, and participates
in bowling. Phillip makes friends easily and loves to dance. He enjoys church and
participates in the Faith & Light program at his parish. He is also involved in the parks
program at St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center. Phillip was the notorious unicorn in our
Noah’s Ark at the Coronado Christmas Parade. While he loves going to visit his family
on the weekends, Phillip really enjoys returning to Casa de Flores for Sunday dinner!
Natasha
Natasha was a special addition to Casa de Felicidad in July 2015. Her personality
and smile light up the room when she enters. She is a very happy young lady and is
always smiling. She really likes her housemates, especially her buddy Ryan! Natasha
loves to play games on her Kindle, plays loud music, and really enjoys getting her
hair and nails done. Natasha is a big fan of cake and loves celebrations. She is
a huge fan of her grandfather, Cliff Steagall, and gets very excited whenever
he arrives. She affectionately calls him “Pa” and the two of them have an
extraordinarily special relationship; he is her world and vice versa. Natasha waited
a long time for the perfect spot to open up at Noah. We are blessed to add both
Natasha and Cliff to our Noah family!

Meet Tina Quinagon:
2015 Employee of the Year
W
hen you think about Noah Homes our amazing folks come to mind, but you also can’t
help talking about our dedicated staff. Tina Quinagon is a leading example of the
devotion and love our staff show the residents every day. When people come to tour Noah
Homes, she is the most welcoming host, making everyone feel at home immediately. Because
of her work ethic and positive attitude, Tina received the 2015 Employee of the Year
award announced at staff day in March! Tina started working at Noah Homes in 1997 and
quickly earned her position as House Manager of Casa de Flores. She is currently the House
Manager for Casa de Felicidad and Casa Delight.
When asked her favorite part of working at Noah Homes Tina answered, “The folks are
amazing, I truly feel that if you do right by them, nothing can go wrong! They are so full of
life and are such an inspiration.”
Tina sets high standards with all staff and unites them as a community. She is a woman of
strong faith and her guiding light has helped our residents at end of life. There is nothing that
Tina can’t do and we are so proud to have her on our staff, but mostly we are happy to call
her a friend! Congratulations on a well deserved honor!

Volunteer Spotlight: It’smachine,
especially with 70 people living here. Managing the variety
of daily needs can be quite complicated, but with special volunteers like
Laureen Amberg
Laureen Amberg, just about anything is possible. Laureen is an invaluable
help on front desk duty, assisting at midday and even makes jewelry,
donating the proceeds to Noah.
Noah Homes receives a full van-load of weekly donations from our local
Bed, Bath & Beyond that range from bedding to kitchen appliances to better
our folks’ lives. Laureen has generously taken on the task of keeping these
donations organized in our Ranch House as they come in each week. For
about four to five hours every Wednesday, Laureen diligently groups these
donations with the same efficiency and organization as a retail store. There
is one room dedicated to bedding with separate shelves for comforters,
fitted sheets, pillows, throws, etc., and another room dedicated specifically to
appliances for kitchens and bathrooms. By the time house managers and staff
come down to gather what they need for their houses, everything is easy to
find and the process is incredibly efficient. Plus, the residents love the variety
of comforters and décor to choose from!
Laureen is no stranger to Noah or our folks. She has volunteered in the
houses during midday, caring for residents who are unable to attend their
work program due to a doctor’s appointment or illness. Anyone who has met
Laureen describes her as kind, caring and always ready and willing to lend a
helping hand whenever she is asked. We are blessed to have Laureen in our
Noah Homes family.

Getting the Word Out in Coronado
A
s reported in the last Navigator, many of Noah Homes’ family and friends in Coronado volunteered to help spread the word
about Noah Homes’ roots in Coronado and our superb, quality care for people with developmental disabilities.
The work continued over the holidays with more than 40 residents, friends and family members participating in the 40th Annual
Coronado Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade in December. Some participants dressed up as Noah and animals of his ark
and walked the complete parade route, accompanied by a trolley. Murfey Construction, who is helping build the new memory care
homes at Noah Homes, also joined in the fun.
In January, Noah Homes was honored to have “Join the Journey” selected as a film in the inaugural Coronado Film Festival. The
event was truly world class and received rave reviews from avid film fans and festivalgoers. Noah Homes Creative and Marketing
Lead, Jerrod Pardini, was one of the filmmakers who put this short documentary together and was able to attend the festival and
VIP events with his wife, Michelle. The festival was an event to remember and our film was very well received! For more information

To help build awareness about people with Down syndrome and togetherness, Noah Homes and the Wampler Foundation invited
people to Coronado’s Village Theatre for a movie event in March. The free event featured the A&E Original Docu-Series, “Born
This Way,” courtesy of A&E Networks and Bunim/Murray Productions. A special thank you to Lance Alspaugh and his staff at
Coronado Village Theatre. Residents of Noah Homes joined in the screening, following seven young adults born with Down
syndrome along with their family and friends as they pursue their passions and lifelong dreams, explore friendships, romantic
relationships and work, all while defying society’s expectations. In their willingness and courage to openly share their lives, through
a lens that is not often shown on television, the audience learned that these stars have high hopes just like anyone else.
In addition to all of the awareness building, 27 new friends from Coronado were taken on a tour of Noah Homes in Spring Valley,
where they were able to meet staff and residents and see first hand why Noah Homes is deserving of their support.

A Note from
Noah’s Ark Angel Foundation
As many are aware, Molly and others put my name in the pot to receive an award;
we won! The end result of their idea has brought Noah Homes, the Foundation, and our
new memory care homes to a certain degree of national attention. In the near future
the campaign will be on GoFundMe and below is an excerpt of what people across the
nation will see.
“There are six thousand babies born with Down syndrome each year and there are a half
million adults with Down syndrome. We at Noah Homes are determined to eradicate the
lack of proper end of life care. To that end, we are building memory care homes to keep
our residents with failing memory issues with their friends as they age toward end of life.”
We are excited about the future of Noah Homes.
