“A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING and everything in its place.” This is a
phrase I knew well growing up as I spent much of my time at my Grandma’s
house. Every paper-clip, pen, receipt, hair tie… you name it, she knew where
it was, because it was always in the same place. She also stood firm in the
belief that “if you haven’t used it in six months then you should get rid of it.”
Needless to say, I didn’t have dress-up parties in 50s and 60s wear.
My Grandma’s natural ability to keep her home orderly and clutter-free
was always something I appreciated, even as a very young girl. My mom and
my sisters, though tidy, didn’t exactly inherit the “orderly” gene and I often
escaped the chaos of my home to visit my Grandma. To me, there’s nothing
more relaxing than a clean, organized house, but try as I might, I have yet
to master the skill the way my Grandma did. Unlike her, I need a lot of tools
like storage bins, baskets, bookshelves and drawer space to keep organized
and when I don’t have them, well, things start to fall apart.
If you’re anything like me and are in need of some organization solutions
or just looking for ways to freshen up your home this spring, you’ll love this
issue of OUR HOMES. Clean up with our Style Picks on page 16 and learn
how to create a functional and organized mudroom (page 44).
If you don’t have time to do everything yourself, you can turn to an expert
with an eye for detail (page 48). And if it’s your outdoor space that needs a
little sprucing up, you’ll find everything you need, including furniture and
accessories at InsideOut Home & Patio in Woodbridge (page 30).
Your home is truly what you make it, as long as it has what’s most
important to you, be it organization, space for entertaining or something
else. Proof of this can be found in our two home features on pages 22 and
34. One is a gorgeous model home in Woodbridge that will delight the
entertainer in you, with several open spaces to gather as well as many
unique finishes and details. The second is a family home that’s been
renovated to suit the homeowners’ styles and personalities perfectly.
I’d love to hear what you think of this colourful spring issue and
hope you’ll share any feedback and suggestions at our new and improved

YEARS
WHAT A GREAT QUOTE! When spring arrives it somehow makes
us feel just a little more energized and gives us an unexplained bounce
in our steps. We notice the little things, like the days are starting to get
longer and the air is getting warmer. The bulbs we planted before the
snow fell are starting to push up through the soil and colour is beginning
to show up everywhere we look.
During this incredible time of growth, we have to take a minute to
thank all of our wonderful advertisers for supporting and believing in
our magazine. It’s amazing to have such a wonderful community embrace
OUR HOMES and our focus on local business. We are delighted with all
the feedback from our readers who are inquiring about products we’ve
featured and are looking for more information about our advertisers. We
have met some terrific people and have made some great new friends.
We could not have imagined anything more for our premiere issue
– it was a huge success! Please continue to email us your questions and
requests for the products you see featured in our magazine. We love
hearing from you!
Have a wonderful spring! Enjoy the beauty and the warmth.

PRETTY IN
I live in a traditional
farmhouse with bold
colours. I would really
like to try this new
pink trend I’ve been
reading about but I
don’t know how to tie
it in with the rest of my
house. How can I use
pink in a grown-up
kind of way? – Susan

3. WALLPAPER: Cole & Son’s
Magnolia Wallpaper
pink
Pantone has declared
Honeysuckle the colour of the
year for 2011. And although I
appreciate any new trend (and I
love pink), this colour is not for
me (unless contained within a
floral arrangement). Pink is a
variable colour you can tie in
with virtually any décor. It ranges from petal soft
to vibrant candy. There are so many to love. But the
trick is commitment. And I’m sorry Honeysuckle,
but you’re a little too bright for me!
When it comes to using pink, your options are
endless, but the mix is important. Here are a few
suggestions. Use them sparingly!
PAINT
Since your palette is bold, try using Farrow &
Ball’s Cinder Rose No. 246. You can use this deep
tone in a main space like your dining room. It’s a
traditional colour that will withstand the test of
time and hold its own against the tones in your
other rooms.
FABRIC
This damask fabric by Quadrille lends itself well
to the feel of an older home without looking dated.
20
o u r h o m e s
s p r i n g
2 0 1 1
Add throw cushions to a sofa for a traditional look
or upholster a bedroom chair for a more feminine
feel. If you’re feeling a bit more courageous, try
China Seas’ Fez II. This contemporary, small scale
geometric would make a fabulous sofa covering
while still maintaining a timeless look.
WALLPAPER
With the large-scale mouldings of a farmhouse,
you can certainly afford to go big when it comes to
scale. Use a pattern like Cole & Son’s “Magnolia”
and paint out the baseboards in a highlight colour
like the tree branch brown. This is certainly a pink
more suggestive of bubblegum and fairies but the
pattern is ample and will hold its own against your
bold colours.
FURNITURE
If a new piece like this Grange drinks cabinet is
not in the budget, paint an old piece of furniture
– an old chair or desk. You’ll get that pop of pink
without the same long-term commitment.
Pink can be described in so many ways. If you’re
a trend follower, then go bright for 2011! But if you
can’t fathom redecorating for another 15 years, then
tone it down and stick with the classics… but don’t
give up – everyone loves a little pink. OH

home & builder
The Rose, Beaverhall’s 5,865 sq. ft. model home, provides a glimpse of
what this collection of executive estate manors will look like. The Rose
makes a great first impression boasting a three-car garage and a muscular
stone and stucco exterior (TriBrik Management Ltd.). Arched windows
(Casa Bella Windows Inc.) are emphasized with precast moulding
while peaks with ornamental detailing add interest to the home’s exterior.
Inside the main level of this luxurious estate are paths of porcelain
flooring from Olympia Tile, embellished with mosaic rug inserts from
Antica Tile & Stone. Complementing the floors are seven-inch, plaster
crown mouldings from Multi-Cast Design Inc. Detailed trim and doors
are by Ganiva Trim Carpentry Ltd.
“The standard features in Regency Estates are superior,” says Elisa
Pennino, General Manager at Beaverhall Homes. “Although the homes
range from 3,800 to 5,900 sq. ft., they all come with 10-foot ceilings on
the main floor and nine-foot ceilings on the second floor and basement.”
Off the front entrance is a library flooded with windows (Casa Bella)
that offer ample light for reading. Drama is added to the room with a
cathedral ceiling and solid oak, Satin Finish hardwood floors.
“Even though this house is large, the finishes make it feel warm and
cosy,” adds Pennino.
One of the house’s greatest assets is the spacious kitchen. It offers an
abundance of polished granite countertops and a large block-island made
of exotic granite with a leathered finish, which acts as a focal point in the
centre of the room. It also boasts a wealth of cabinets (Paris Kitchens),
many of which are fixed with pullout shelving for easy access.
Porcelain flooring and a waffle ceiling sandwich this culinary haven
where valance lighting underneath fresh, off-white cabinets emphasize
the marble backsplash. The kitchen is open to the great room, which has
a linear fireplace (Pinnacle Fireplaces & Facings), making this home
ideal for entertaining.
An oak staircase with wrought iron pickets from Railing Excellence
& Stairs Inc. leads to the second floor. The upper level has a laundry room
and three guest rooms with en suites. Adding shimmer to the second floor
is an elaborate chandelier from Union Lighting.
The master bedroom, located in separate quarters, is fit for a king and
queen. The room is divided into three separate seating areas, which can be
used for lounging, reading or a place to enjoy an afternoon cup of tea. Large
windows allow natural light to enter the space while a contemporary fireplace,
set on a built-in wall panel, adds romance and warmth to this intimate room.
Separate his-and-her en suites are a major selling feature. For him, the
builder included an oversized, round shower stall with a frameless glass
enclosure with a separate drip area. The lady’s side offers a great escape
with a vessel tub, cosmetic counter, marble flooring and several windows.
However, the true gem is her walk-in closet. Better described as
a dressing room, this massive closet features wall-to-wall built-in
organizers from Executive Closets Ltd. and a separate shoe closet to
hold her most prized possessions.
“This isn’t your typical house. The layout is different, but it’s well
designed and has great flow,” says Pennino. “Beaverhall Homes builds quality
houses and will do all the customizing necessary to satisfy the customer.”

For optimal organization, this model was designed with two generous
storage closets on the main floor, a walk-in pantry, a full wall of storage
cabinets in the mudroom and additional storage in the laundry room.
Not only is the Rose sensible, it’s also highly technical and efficient.
Beaverhall Homes has equipped this estate with the latest technology,
including a Smart Home System, which has an automated lighting system,
and has space for an optional elevator. Energy Star products like low-e
argon filled windows (Casa Bella), an energy efficient furnace, heat
recovery ventilation system and a humidifier from Downsview Plumbing
& Heating make the home environmentally friendly.
To go along with the allure of this residence is the ideal setting.
Regency Estates is an infill project conveniently located off Islington
Ave. across from the picturesque Boyd Park and is accessible from all the
major highways.
“What’s great about this location is that it’s within an established
community, so the area is already developed and the amenities are
available to homeowners immediately,” adds Pennino. “Those who live
in Woodbridge have an abundance of conveniences at their fingertips.
Schools, public transportation, entertainment facilities, countless
restaurants and shopping areas are available in this up-scale community.”
Pricing for this collection of homes starts at $1.3 million and consists
of a mere 34 properties built on 60’, 65’ and 70’ lots. “Large and deep lots
are rare to find in new developments in this area, which make these homes
quite unique,” says Pennino.
The elegance of Woodbridge provides the perfect backdrop for
Beaverhall Homes’ Regency Estates, as both have practical qualities
complemented by extravagance and charm. OH

THE PLACE: As the warm weather settles in for a longer stay,
it’s time to focus on your outdoor space. InsideOut Home & Patio
has everything you need to beautify your patio, deck and pool
area, from dining and lounging furniture to heaters and serving
accessories. Brothers Sam and Christopher Mele opened InsideOut
after learning the business. “As university students we paid for our
tuition by working for those who retail in outdoor furniture,” says
Christopher. “Soon after, we formed our vision of opening our own
store to expand our ideas for patio furniture.” Today, eight locations
are open in Ontario, including the 10,000 sq. ft. store in Vaughan.
THE STYLE: InsideOut carries your favourite style, from
contemporary to traditional. Quality is paramount. Christopher
says their forté is creating outdoor rooms using the best in patio
furniture made from cast aluminum and outdoor wicker. Unique
to InsideOut is their custom cushion program, which allows you
to create your own cushions in any style and size with over 100
different fabric options. Once you have your furniture picked out,
finish the space with an awning and a barbeque.

WHAT’S HOT: When you enter the large, bright and colourful store it
won’t take long to pick out what’s hot this season. Modular sectionals
in several styles hold a strong presence and Christopher explains that
it’s due to their versatility. “They allow you to create your own custom
design to accommodate any outdoor space.”
SEASONAL: Christopher and his brother are passionate about patio
design and adamant about carrying the latest and greatest items.
You’ll find this season’s hottest colours and trends throughout the
store. “A must-have is our brand new double beverage drink dispenser
that is BPA free and allows you to serve two separate drinks with one

Situated in a quiet neighbourhood, Crocetta Accardi’s home is
a thriving example of just how deceiving looks can be. On an
otherwise traditional suburban street, Crocetta’s doors open
to a beautiful haven of natural, earthy materials, smooth stone
and a plethora of light that showcases how true beauty is often
found on the inside.

The home is a testament to the power of family values, with much of the
luscious wood furnishings having been handcrafted by Crocetta’s father,
who made a living as a furniture maker. The dark maples and oaks are
smooth as silk to the touch and in pristine condition. The details are delicate
but unified, with each piece in every room complementing the other.
It is these notions of family that found Crocetta wanting to create
the perfect home for herself, her husband Umberto and their two young
daughters. After falling in love with their neighbour’s renovations, the
family enlisted the same contractor, Joey Quintieri from North Hill
Contracting to help create their beautiful home.
“From the street, you don’t visually understand what goes on in here
until you walk in and it really explodes,” Joey says. “Most homes have
good potential and it’s there, you just have to discover it in your property.”
Joey’s motto when it comes to renovations is, “Do it once. Do it right.”
Natural light was at the top of the list, so they worked to tear down entire
walls in order to open up the house exponentially and maximize the light.
The family chose various blinds from Brading Specialty Shades in soft
hues that the company colour-matched to the unique trimming (Emery
Woodworking), a signature touch of Joey’s. They chose gorgeous lighting
fixtures and chandeliers from Union Lighting, complemented by island

tiles from Ciot and Stone Tile International, and creating a kitchen floor
that Joey calls a personal best in his contracting career. The tiles weave
beiges and browns and connect all the natural elements beautifully.
“We were looking for something that’s unique, but not crazy and this
worked well. We were in love with the colour and the matte finish right
away,” Joey says.
The counters are comprised of various granites and marbles that
sparkle in the light creating an exotic and luscious ambience typically
reserved for the lavish and elite. The bathroom counters are a rich
“Antique Brown” Crema Marfil by Marble and Marble Ltd., and the
kitchen features shimmering granite from Mondial Granite & Marble.
Walking through the house, you can’t help but touch the smooth materials
and glide your fingers along the perfect surfaces admiring their crisp
construction and the overall beauty of nature’s resources.
Materials are imported from all over the world, but the ones chosen for
the family’s fireplace are the pièce-de-résistance. The unique and stunning
gas fireplace from Odyssey Fireplaces Ltd. binds the clear attention to
detail, the passion for natural elements and the beauty and warmth of
the intricate Skyline Mosaic stone. Thinking outside the box, North Hill

constructed a wall separating the living room and the dining room only
slightly and inserted the fireplace in the middle, which actually serves as
a window between the two rooms and provides amazing physical and
natural warmth.
The stonework continues throughout the house, but can be found
predominately in the bathrooms. Downstairs in the powder room, vertical
marble-work by Ciot provides the essence of bamboo, while upstairs in
the en suite bathroom, the square work provides a mature and clean feel.
The modern sinks, faucets and large, deep bathtub from Atlantis Bath
Centre contrast yet complement the natural elements found throughout
the house from the granite shower seat to the glass door by JeRose
Mirror and Glass Ltd.
To prepare the house for the OUR HOMES photo shoot, Joey’s wife
Connie Quintieri of Strawberry Fields Interior Decorating outfitted
the kitchen and master bedroom with elegant lace throws and delicate
decorative accessories in neutral colours and mint greens from French
Feathers Home Décor & Accessories.
After spending the morning walking through the home, it is clear that the
family’s eye for detail and appreciation of natural beauty helped turn what
Joey calls a previously boring house into an inviting and lush urban sanctuary.
“My goal during the renovation was to create an oasis for myself,”
Crocetta says. “My surroundings often affect my mood, so it was
important to me to have visually calm and serene surroundings. I think
the colour, clean lines and lack of clutter on the main floor achieve that
for me. At the end of the day, I find myself looking around, taking a deep
breath and saying, ahhh. OH

GET IT
RIGHT
BEFORE

T
The “home renovation market” is hot – and the playing field has
become ripe with competitors seeking opportunities to capitalize on
serving this growing niche. The key to project success is in knowing how
to make the right choices, especially when hiring skilled trades and even
more importantly, overseeing their work from the start.
It’s a bit like tripping through a mine field since renovations always
harbour potential for costly unknowns, which emerge from behind walls
once tear-out has taken place. As a result, most of the stress and tension
on a job ultimately revolves around money, as both homeowner and
contractor have financial commitments and expectations, which if not
met can trigger a host of unpredictable reactions.
Keeping communication open and honest between homeowner
and contractor is critical in maintaining a no surprises policy, which is
essential for the homeowner’s financial management and fair payment to
contractors. In more serious cases, this kind of misunderstanding could
escalate into litigation. When all is said and done, nobody really wins.
RENOVATION GONE WRONG
Linda and John remortgaged their home to renovate their kitchen.
They received quotes, hired a contractor, checked his references and
signed a contract, which included cost accounting. Their problems started
when they upgraded on several main purchases, leaving little wiggle
room in their budget for cost overruns. Their project quickly fell behind
schedule and it became evident the contractor undervalued his quote. He
understaffed the project and got further behind, causing him to have to
juggle this project with other commitments.
Even after advancing monies totalling two-thirds of the contract value,
no cost accounting or additional notice of extras was provided, despite
repeated requests for it. The situation worsened when invoicing finally
arrived, because as they feared, it included extras not previously discussed
and work quoted but not yet completed. The contractor also refused to
return to their home until he was paid in full (less a very small holdback).
Feeling trapped and somewhat held to ransom with a non-functioning
kitchen, Linda and John, trying to avoid serious confrontation, paid the
contractor, who promised to complete all the work still outstanding. In
the end, the contractor did not fully honour the contract commitment and
remedial work had to be done by others at a higher cost than the amount
of their small holdback. The result was an unpleasant experience for both
client and contractor that could have been avoided.

Tips For A Successful Renovation
1. Full Contractor Transparency
Whether a contractual agreement is based on:
(a) a set price for the job
(b) cost plus a percentage markup
(c) time and materials.
It is incumbent upon the contractor to provide full
disclosure of costs for all work performed for monies
requested. It is unreasonable to expect that clients have a
bottomless moneybag from which to pay unexpected extras
at the end of a job. Changes to quotes should be identified
as they arise and confirmed in writing so there is no
misunderstanding between parties as to their scope, cost
and time commitment. There is more to job responsibility
and integrity than just showing up!
...enhance the natural beauty of wood.
2. Homeowner Awareness
Renovations seldom go 100 per cent as originally planned.
Changes are inevitable. Make sure you are firm with your
contractor that you expect transparency and ensure
you have your requirement for “notice of extras” and
“completion dates” duly noted in your contract. Get quotes
in writing and be aware of attempts to “loop hole” underquoting by using “extras” as a scapegoat.
3. Become aware of the Ontario Lien Act
Under Provincial Law, homeowners have requirements
to hold back funds at the end of a project. Make sure you
understand how this regulation applies to you. Plenty of
information is available online to assist you.
4. The best projects are based upon the principles of fair
exchange. Expect to pay for what you ask for and plan to
deliver what you know is expected. OH

MUDROOMS
S T O R Y A N D I L L U S T R AT I O N B Y K I R K E S T I N
All homes should have a functional mudroom – a place to hang and store outerwear
and gear. Mudrooms confine a mess before it pours into other areas of the home.
Every mudroom should have basic design elements. The secret is lots of sturdy storage space and easy-to-clean flooring, like tile, slate or linoleum.
An organized closet hides coats, shoes and boots. Windows bring in natural light.
WE’VE DESIGNED A 10-BY-10 ROOM
FOR A BUSY FAMILY OF FOUR.
A) Coat closet. Storage for coats,
shoes, boots and hats, etc.
B) Garage door/side or back
door, or entrance into house.
C) Horizontal overhead storage
unit. Works well with decorative
weaved storage baskets in the
cubbyholes, also for additional
storage or decorative items, for
example, plants can be placed on
top of the overhead storage unit.
Tip: Vertical, free standing storage
units also work well in a mudroom
with or without storage baskets in
the cubbyholes.
D) Coat hooks. In addition to the
coat closet, items such as purses
and coats can be conveniently hung
by family or guests.
E) Sitting bench. Convenient for
putting on and removing shoes/boots.
F) Storage compartment built
into bench (flip open recessed
lid). Multiple uses – for sitting and
storage of gloves and toques, etc.
G) Double storage shelves for
shoes and boots, under bench
for convenience and to maintain
order. OH

WHAT’S NEW & HOT IN BATHROOM TILES!!!!
LARGE RECTIFIED TILES
The newest trend in tiles is the seamless look called a
rectified tile. A rectified tile is a tile that has had all its edges
mechanically finished for a more precise facial dimension.
The rectified edge on the tiles
allows you to get the tiles very
close together without leaving
a large grout joint. The rectified
edge in a large format tile
minimizes the amount of grout
joints and gives you a beautiful
streamlined look. Most popular
are the larger size formats often
used with smaller modular sizes
to create patterns.
If you want a seamless look
you must visit our tile gallery
with plenty of rectified large
tiles to choose from. The tile sizes seem to be getting bigger
and bigger – we have tiles now that are 2’ x 4’.
Our customers love the larger rectified tile and are very
pleased with the end result.
