MADE IN 502 W. Cordova Road, Suite 1, Santa Fe, NM 87505 505.820.6860 nmcf.org NEW MEXICO Letter to our PARTNERS Dear NMCF Partner: Every year, as NMCF staff and Board of Directors travel from Santa Fe to Silver City, from Los Alamos to Lordsburg, from Farmington to Hobbs, we are constantly moved by the fundamental goodness and decency of the people of New Mexico! Statistics cannot adequately measure the value of our culture, kindness, history, community and landscapes. TOGETHER WE THRIVE At the same time, national census rankings in economics, education and health underscore the dire need for the good work of NMCF, its donors and partners that are helping to transform New Mexico. In this 2011 report, we are highlighting some of the incredible stories of individuals and projects that are “Made in New Mexico”— big impact through the ripple effect of small actions. New Mexico Community Foundation is an agent and convener for change. We bring philanthropic resources to each of our 33 counties. In 2011, we were able to distribute over $4.5 million in grants and scholarships throughout the state. We do our work by: • Designing and leading initiatives to improve our state • Connecting donors to community needs • Identifying and supporting capable nonprofit organizations • Strengthening civil society through public discourse and engagement CONTENTS Letter to Our Partners 1 NMCF Mission and Values 2 Santa Clara Pueblo 4 NewMexicoWomen.Org 6 Native Leadership and Philanthropy 7 Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences 8 Bodhi Fund 10 Mac Chase Fund New Mexico Community AIDS Partnership 2011 NMCF Grant Recipients NMCF Financials 2011 Donors NMCF Board and Staff 11 12 14 16 17 21 The vignettes within this Annual Report highlight and celebrate stories of success in our state, stories of effective philanthropy and collaboration to benefit the greater good. Inclusivity & Local Leadership People and communities have a right to have a voice in their own outcomes and in making the changes needed to address systematic problems. 2 of New Mexico. Building community wealth and Partnerships Sustainability Transparency We build partnerships, inspiring collaborations and investing in movements. NMCF maintains stable and flexible funding to support sustainable programming for our partners in perpetuity. We promote openness in grant making and financial management with clear communication around foundation objectives and strategies. relationships, maximizing community capacity and self-reliance are at the heart of our work. 3 Between the fires, extreme cold, and the natural gas shortage, 2011 was a year that challenged several communities in New Mexico. Tests of human spirit give rise to cooperation and RECOVERY , as wonderfully demonstrated by the story of Santa Clara Pueblo and the We Will Heal Fund. Within days of the Las Conchas fire raging just west of Santa Fe, NMCF established a fund to provide flexible resources for the immediate and long-term costs of fire rehabilitation. While the land won’t ever be the same, the reforestation efforts have made it possible for future generations of Santa Clarans to perceive and interact with the landscape of their ancestors. In addition to holding emergency funds to respond to natural disasters, NMCF also manages funds that respond to human needs issues across the state. In 2011, NMCF made $215,000 in emergency grants, helping our nonprofit partners by lighting a candle in the darkest hours. Philanthropic First on the scene, able to respond quickly and with expertise, to emergencies and traumatic situations. 4 5 ewMexicoWomen.Or NMCF’s commitment to honor and engage tribal communities statewide in the promise of philanthropy and entrepreneurship as a means of sustaining Native America. NewMexicoWomen.Org supports a broad range of rural and urban programs that focus efforts on advancing opportunities for women and girls throughout the state. Recognizing the need for more focused and robust funding to help women and girls lead healthy, self-sufficient and empowered lives, NMCF has given first year seed funding towards this initiative. With this foresight, 2011 has been a year of planning and laying the groundwork. We are in partnership with the national Women’s Funding Network and, already, many state nonprofits have come to us to collaborate in this new effort. Through our statewide network, our website and our engaged donors, we will be shining a spotlight on the issues affecting New Mexico women and girls and using research to get the facts that can inform positive changes in public policy. OUR investment in women will, in turn, create A new initiative of NMCF, born of our work with Women Building Community, NewMexicoWomen.Org is cultivating a stronger state for women. 6 HEALTHIER FAMILiES & COMMUNITIES throughout our state. In 2011, NMCF granted $481,000 to support women and girls in New Mexico. Native LeadershiP AND PhilanthropY As part of its extensive and on-going work in native country, NMCF contracted native facilitators and convened a meeting of Tribal Governors and Tribal Education Directors from six different tribes to discuss the educational disparities in Bernalillo Public Schools, which serves a high number of Pueblo children. As a result of this meeting and follow up communications, an ongoing plan was created to address inequities in access to funds and educational programming, resulting in several revisions of the consolidated Indian Policies and Procedures document, which governs relations and outlines the educational needs of Indian children from tribal perspectives. The Superintendent accepted all of the proposals presented by the Tribal Education Directors on behalf of the Pueblo leadership, requiring strengthened accountability and transparency in Bernalillo Public Schools. The six Tribal Education Directors continue to meet and collaborate about progressing educational outcomes for their children in Bernalillo County. This collaboration, led by tribes, is a new level of civic engagement that demonstrates STRENGTH Photo by Don Usner for Reel Fathers through persistence, temperance, and organization, leading to true reform in this New Mexico school district. 7 ndowments Thirteen years ago, a group of dedicated parents sought to make a difference in the way children experienced education. They looked for an environment that nurtured children from all walks of life, a school where kids love to learn and teachers love to teach, where students learn the power of being citizens, not simply consumers, and where citizenship and service TRANSFORM LIVES . That vision became Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences (SFSAS), an Expeditionary Learning nonprofit school. Today, 120 children from ages 3 to 14, are authentically engaged in the learning process and learn by designing and constructing actual solutions to real life problems, investigating subject matter such as literacy, immigration, and global carbon footprint. SFSAS deliberately creates a school culture that empowers students to take risks and see their potential, believing full-heartedly that a culture of respect creates a culture of achievement. To date, the school has raised approximately $500,000 towards a $1 million challenge grant. Based on its strong track record for supporting initiatives that improve education and student success, NMCF is managing this endowment, ensuring that SFSAS will carry on their vision of teaching the next generation of leaders and citizen scholars. 8 Photo by Megan Goldberg (SFSAS) Permanent funds managed by NMCF for a designated purpose, with the principal remaining intact. 9 onor advised funds Scholarships Bodhi with his younger siblings, Finn and Talia. Photo by Thomas Beebe Bodhi was four when he was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in 2003. After chemotherapy at UNM Children’s Hospital, Bodhi was referred for a pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), a difficult medical procedure unavailable in the state of New Mexico. In April of 2004, Bodhi traveled to New York City where he underwent a BMT at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Today, he is an adventurous, spirited, irrepressible teenager enjoying life with his younger sister and brother. The Bodhi Fund is a PERMANENT RESOURCE , A low-cost, flexible vehicle of charitable giving, administered by NMCF, giving YOU the power of purposeful philanthropy. 10 helping families to mediate the challenges of grueling medical treatment for perilously ill children. A collaboration of NMCF, the Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico, and UNM Children’s Hospital, the fund is designed to contribute to, or cover expenses of, New Mexico children who are diagnosed with rare cancers and blood diseases that require out-ofstate treatment, enabling families to keep their lives stable back home. Since the fund’s inception, nineteen families have received the support to access the very best out of state medical care for their children No applicant has been denied assistance. Families living in Artesia take education seriously, understanding the return on investment in a motivated and educated young populace. One needs look no further than the Chase Scholarship Fund, housed at NMCF. Founded by Mack and Marilyn Chase in 2007, hundreds of Artesia High School graduates have received support to fully explore their EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES with renewable scholarships of up to $5500 annually and with matching funds available from 19 colleges in New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. When a community invests in their young adults, everybody wins. NMCF is the statewide expert in soundly managing scholarship programs according to federal standards and best practices, maximizing the effects of scholarships and educational grants. 11 iscal Sponsorship In 2011, New Mexico Community AIDS Partnership (NMCAP), a fiscally sponsored project of NMCF, completed its 18th cycle of grants in support of HIV prevention, education, and services, totaling $124,972. These grants allowed for the establishment of food pantries for people living with HIV in Santa Fe and Las Cruces, emergency financial support for people living with HIV around the state, a media campaign for HIV testing, and HIV prevention programs for Native American women, LGBTQ youth, transgender individuals, young Hispanic gay and bisexual men, plus instruction for Health Educators about the need for comprehensive sex education. 2011 was NMCAP’s sixth year of participation in AIDS United’s AmeriCorps/Caring Counts program. The five-person team supported local HIV prevention and service programs, and received training and experience in health promotion and related skills. In 2011, team members were placed at Southwest Care Center, Youth Shelters, First Nations Community Healthsource, and the Santa Fe Mountain Center, greatly INCREASING CAPACITY A formal arrangement between NMCF and projects that don’t have their own 501(c)(3) determination, providing the ability for them to receive tax-deductible contributions and varying levels of administrative support. for HIV-related programming in the region.
