Faulkton Area Foundation established
The Faulkton Development
Corporation has expanded it’s
fundraising capabilities with
the formation of the Faulkton
Area Foundation.
The new local board has finalized a set of by-laws that will
govern the Faulkton Area Foundation and will sign a funding
agreement with the South
Dakota Community Foundation, who will manage the
funds, once we start fundraising.
“Creating a community foundation was one of the recommendations that came out of the
many community meetings that
have been held over the last several years,” said newly elected
Foundation President Troy
Hadrick. “The purpose is to create a funding source that will be
available year after year to help
meet some of the needs of nonprofit organizations in the area.
In essence, we are planting a
tree today that will provide us
shade in the future.”
The interest generated from
the foundation can be used by
non-profit organizations for
projects that will benefit the
community and its members.
There will be an application
process used to determine what
projects will be funded.

recommendations for a Master
Transportation Plan for the
City of Faulkton. The meeting
will be on Tuesday, July 29
from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Faulkton
City Hall. The open house will
be informal, with one on one
discussion
available
with
SDDOT, city staff and a short
presentation at 5:30 p.m.
SDDOT is conducting this
open house on behalf of the
City of Faulkton. The purpose
of this public open house is to
solicit community input on
transportation needs and issues within the City of Faulkton. SDDOT has been working
with citizens, stakeholders, and
state and local officials to complete a Master Transportation
Plan for the City of Faulkton
over the course of the year. At
this meeting, the public will be
introduced to the project team,
be informed about the study
process, and be asked to provide insight and comments on
the recommendations for the
transportation network within
the City of Faulkton.
Community Foundation provides some matching funds that
vary depending on what our
local goals are so we will look to
maximize any and all opportunities like that”, Hadrick said.
There are several ways that
businesses, families or individuals can donate to the foundation. “Everything from simply
writing a check to gifting property to making the foundation a
beneficiary of a life insurance
policy are just a few of the possibilities,” Hadrick explained.
The S.D. Community Foundation will be providing all the resources and information for
anyone that wants to explore
their options.
SDDOT, city councilmen and
staff will be available to discuss
the needs and issues of the
transportation network and to
answer your questions. During
this time, you will also have the
opportunity to present written
comments.

Faulkton applied for the
award by submitting the successful local project of the
Walkabout Development Corporation retail center.
Through a collaboration between the Faulkton Development Corp., Dacotah Bank,
FHLB and Rural Electric Economic Development a loan for
the project was made possible.
Walkabout Development was
the dream of transplanted Austrialian Dave Hedt who originally came to Faulkton as a
harvest worker. The Faulkton
Retail Center opened for busi-
ness on Oct. 1, 2013 and had an
immediate and major impact.
All of the business spaces are
now occupied and the project
has injected wealth and additional jobs into the community.
There are three new businesses in the retail center and
two businesses moving into the
new building from other locations. They are Homan’s ACE
Hardware, Country Roots,
Stepping Stone Embroidery,
the Short Stop Bar and
Farmer’s Union Insurance.
Overall the project created
ten new and part time jobs and
retained seven existing jobs.
Dacotah Bank has been active in several other projects in
town. Five years ago the bank
partnered with the USDA
Rural Development to provide
financing for the Faulkton Area
Medical Center expansion. The
bank also purchased a bond to
finance an eight unit apartment now currently being constructed.
The bank has been a contributor to community projects including the community center,
hospital foundation and the
newly formed Faulkton Area
Foundation.

On Sunday, July 13 Pastor
Julie Nygaard led worship in the

had a lot of visitors which is al-
ways enjoyed.
Tuesday Renee Reid spent
time sharing in room visits. It
was time for some fancy nails.
We also had garden party on the

produce from A to Z. and of
course what to do with them.
We also enjoyed the flowers with
the many colors. We enjoyed
cookies, coffee and juice.

with Renee calling the game.

Dean and Alice Sangster had a successful afternoon at the Tolstoy Car Show Sunday, July 20. They
took three cars to the show. The Sangster’s 1955 Ford Crown Victoria, a.k.a. “Pinkie” took first Best of
Ford. Their Mustage won the Best of the 60’s competition and their 1956 took best in the 50’s category.
In spite of the heat there was a good turnout of cars and lots of tractors.
“For a small town they really had a nice show,” Alice Sangster said. “There was lots of food and plenty
of nice, friendly people. Hats off to Tolstoy.”
Family plans open house
for JoAnn Schaefers 80th
JoAnn (O'Meara) Schaefers will
be celebrating 80 years of life that
have been filled with memories,
challenges, laughs and tears, and
enough events to fill volumes.
The open house will be Sunday,
July 27 from 1-4 p.m. at the Ponderosa in Polo. If you can’t make
it send her a card: JoAnn Schaefers 35340 178th St Orient SD
57467-5108.
Born and raised in Orient and
Faulkton, she moved a little farther south to Polo after she married Jack Schaefers Oct. 25, 1954.
They raised their family on the
farm originally owned by Jack's
parents John and Louisa (Bowar)
Schaefers, Both JoAnn and Jack
still call this home.
Jack kept the farm going and
JoAnn coordinated the growing of
their ten children. Somehow, she
found time to be active in all the
church activities, community celebrations, school reunions and
bazaars. As her children started
moving out, JoAnn started getting more involved in activities
outside the Polo community.
Now that her children have
moved all over the United States
and have families of their own,
JoAnn has broadened her involvement and active participation into many areas. She is
especially dedicated to the
Catholic Daughters of the America's, serving over the years on
the local, state and national level.
She has been the Polo/Orient
news correspondent for 41 years
for both the Faulk County Record
and the Miller Press. She also has
served 40 years on the Grow
South Dakota/NESDEC board.
She still publishes Polo’s St Liborious Catholic church bulletin,
plays the organ, does historical
tours of the church and schoolhouse facilities and was instrumental in much of the writing of
the Polo history books.
She always gives her time and
help to whoever asks. In fact her
children keep telling her she
needs to slow down, but then

Josh Vanden Bosch
SDGFP Conservation Officer
for Faulk & Spink Counties
The Department of Game,
Fish and Parks
would like to invite the farmers
and sportsmen of
Spink and Faulk
Counties
and
surrounding
area to attend an
open house at
the Historical Depot in Redfield
on Thursday, Aug. 14 from 5-7
p.m. We would like to provide
you with an opportunity to offer
comments and discuss wildlife
and fishery management issues
in this area. A short PowerPoint
presentation
about
Spink
County will be held at 5:30 p.m.
Topics of discussion can include
deer, canada geese, pheasants,
coyotes, and fish management
but are not limited to these.
As we are all aware, wildlife
management has become more
and more challenging over the
past years. We hope that open
houses like this will help the department address wildlife concerns you have on your land and
within Spink County.
We plan to keep this open
house informal. The main objective here is to get folks together
to discuss issues one on one. Our
main goal is to leave the open
house with a better understanding of your assessment and evaluations
regarding
wildlife
management on your farm. I am
sure that not everyone will agree
on all the issues and season designs of the department. Hopefully, we can take the variety of
individual concerns and blend
them into management proposals that will attempt to benefit
the wildlife resources, as well as
landowner and sportsmen’s interests.
This open house is not meant
to take the place of personal visits from me or other department
representatives. Rather, it is believed that we can all benefit by
participating in discussions as a
group. Sometimes, good ideas of
a few may be overlooked by the
majority. If you are unable to
make it to this open house and
have concerns you would like to
discuss, call me and I will stop
out as soon as I can.
Please feel free to give me a
call if you have questions about
this invitation and open house.
My office number is 605-4725015. Thanks, and hope to see
you there!

August and early
fall climate outlook
Cooler than average temperatures are expected to persist
through August in northern
South Dakota, according to the
latest climate outlook from
anks addition
and correction:
Sorry Ausie Dave Hedt, I
forgot to list you among
the fireworks helpers . . .
and to Deputy Steve . . . I
know your real name is
Brent. For the fireworks
team:
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center.
The outlook, released July 17,
indicates that most of northern
South Dakota is leaning towards
cooler than average temperatures
for the month ahead, explained
Laura Edwards, SDSU Extension
Climate Field Specialist.
"The south central and central
parts of the state have equal
chances of above average, near
average, and below average temperatures for August," Edwards
said. "This is consistent with the
trend of a cooler than average
summer that has been forecast
this year."
As far as precipitation goes,
Edwards said that the western
half of the state is more likely to
have a wetter than average
month in August. This is the
northern part of a large area of
the southwest that is projected to
have an active wet monsoon season.
"The three-month period of August through October is still forecast to be cooler than average
across the whole state," Edwards
said. "The climate models are
strongly tied to El Niño, with
some data showing cooler and
wetter across the north central
states in the early fall season."
Edwards said the latest outlooks reflect the strong likelihood
of El Niño meeting the criteria for
official designation sometime this
fall. The indicators that determine El Niño conditions are
oceanic and atmospheric conditions near the equator in the Pacific Ocean, which can impact
climate in North America.
"The current data show that El
Niño is 70-80 percent likely to develop before the winter season,"
Edwards said. "We aren't sure on
how strongly this will impact our
area, but overall it appears as if
it will be weak to moderate
strength."

Heartburn
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Heartburn is a common problem. Despite its name, it has nothing to
do with the heart. Heartburn refers to the symptoms you feel when
acids in your stomach flow backward into the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube that carries food from your throat to your stomach. This backsplash of acid occurs more often in people who have increased pressure on or in
the stomach. This can occur if you are overweight, pregnant, or have a hiatal hernia. It can also occur if you eat too much or lie down soon after eating. Heartburn
is generally not a problem when it occurs less than once a week.
Heartburn that happens often is called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or
GERD. Frequent heartburn occurs several times a week, comes back when over
the counter antacids wear off, or occurs at night. Frequent heartburn usually
needs prescription medications and sometimes further studies to make sure an
ulcer or precancerous condition is not developing in the stomach or esophagus.
Sometimes surgery may be needed. If you have any concerns about your heartburn or other symptoms you may be experiencing, please visit with your regular
medical provider.
If you have heartburn that comes on with exercise, causes chest pain, causes
difficulty breathing, or causes weakness, do not assume these symptoms are from
stomach acid! Seek medical care immediately, as these can be symptoms of a
heart attack.

S. D. remains a key player
in nation's cattle industry
Beef cattle outnumber people
in South Dakota by more than a
4 to 1 ratio. With this in mind, it
should come as no surprise that
South Dakota cattlemen and cattle feeders continue to keep their
stake among national leaders in
beef production despite the challenges presented by the drought
of 2012, Storm Atlas and escalating feed and land costs.
This status was verified with
the release of the USDA South
Dakota census of agriculture, explained Jim Krantz, SDSU Extension
Cow/Calf
Field
Specialist.
With a calf crop inventory of
1.69 million head as of January
1, 2013, South Dakota ranked
fourth among the nation's leading cattle states. Krantz said
that although that number is
slightly less than the 2012 total
of more than 1.7 million; however, it is still the largest total
since 2008.
"The State's cow herd and
their offspring accounted for almost 23 percent of its agricultural gross receipts," Krantz
said. "That total represents an
eighth place ranking among all
South Dakota:
Seeing South Dakota’s
promise & possibilities
by Katie Hunhoff
Fraser Harrison, a travel
writer from England, spent the
summer of 2013 in Yankton. An
essay on his impressions is featured in the current South
Dakota History magazine, published by the State Historical
Society.
Harrison calls it a love letter
to Yankton. But it was not love
at first sight. The 2013 visit
was not our English friend’s
first time in Yankton. He visited several South Dakota
towns in 2011 for his book Infinite West: Travels in South
Dakota. Harrison stayed for
one night in Yankton and left
states," he said.
When reviewing cow numbers
by themselves, the January 1,
2014 beef cow inventory total
stood at 1.635 million down
slightly from the 2013 inventory
number but still about 1.5 percent above the 2012 mark. That
1.635 million head total still
ranks South Dakota fifth nationally behind Texas, which is
ranked first with more than 4
million cows; Missouri, Oklahoma and Nebraska comprise
the remaining states in the topfive in beef cow numbers.
South Dakota also ranks seventh for cattle on feed according
to the 2012 Census of Agriculture accounting for 2.4 percent of
the national total. "The January,
2014 inventory total of 310,000
is almost 26 percent greater than
the 2013 January 1 figure and
about 16 percent greater than either of the 2011 or 2012 totals,"
Krantz said.

information about the nation's
agricultural production network.

with a bleak picture of a
"melancholy little town." In
hindsight, he realized his stay
had started off on the wrong
path when he was booked into
“a cell-like hotel room” from a
misleading website. His impressions didn't get better. He
found several closed buildings
downtown, and the historic
Meridian Bridge was closed
and fenced. He left, wrote a sad
account of Yankton, and
thought he would never return.
"Travel writing is an irresponsible art," he writes in his
new essay. "The writer grants
himself the license to visit a
place for a few hours and pronounce magisterially on its
vices and virtues, its charms
and blemishes, without fear of
punishment or reprisal."
On the flip side of that sentiment, there is something precious about seeing a place for a
first time. In the business of
travel writing, Harrison says it
is always important to "preserve your capacity for wonderment."
That’s our goal at South
Dakota Magazine. We hope
every issue surprises readers
and gives a sense of wonderment to a place we all know
very well. Harrison told me
that ordinary things such as

boring to visit at home, seem
fascinating when you see their
equivalents in foreign countries. Likewise, some of our
greatest features here in South
Dakota may seem mundane
after viewing them so often.
In the July/August issue of
South Dakota Magazine we
asked town mayors to tell us
one thing they would like readers to know about their town.
Something that would surprise
and entertain. Mayors have
strong ties to their home towns,
and work tirelessly to make
them a better place to live.
They didn't have the luxury of
seeing their town with fresh,
clean eyes. Nevertheless, their
answers often did surprise us
even though we travel the state
intensely.
We hadn't heard, for example, that Brookings recently
turned trash into treasure by
converting an old landfill on
22nd Avenue into the 135-acre

We learned that a worldrenowned airbrush artist is a

It's also important to note
that not all towns care about
first impressions or even desire
visitors. Cottonwood mayor
J.C. Heath says he knows his
town looks like a ghost town,
but people do live there — 12
people, to be exact. "We get
every tourist coming through
Jackson County to the Hills,"
says Heath. "We don't mind
people stopping to look at the
old buildings but they should
keep off our private property.
Everything belongs to somebody.”
A visiting travel writer has
the benefit of surprise and wonderment when touring South
Dakota landscapes and towns,
but as we explore within the
state we know and love we have
a bigger responsibility. We owe
it to our readers to see the possibilities and the promise.
I guess mayors and South
Dakota’s writers have that in
common. Fortunately those of
us who write for a living don’t
have to worry about sewers,
streets and gutters.

One Book discussion
coming to Faulk Library
The South Dakota Humanities
Council welcomes members of
the public to participate in the
2014 One Book South Dakota
program by attending an upcoming One Book discussion in
Faulkton.
We invite and encourage you
to take part in an upcoming discussion with Bruce Roseland at
the Faulk County Library on
Monday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m.
The 2014 One Book SD is
“Dakota,” by Kathleen Norris,
which paints an expansive portrait of the Dakotas. Norris
provides loving descriptions of
the vast and starkly beautiful
landscape, extremes of weather
and topography, and townspeople and farmers. She reveals
the contradictions of small town
life on the Great Plains.
Norris’ book will be read and
talked about by community
reading groups across the state
during discussions such as the
one that will take place in
Faulkton leading up to the 2014
South Dakota Festival of Books
in Sioux Falls, Sept. 26 - 28. As
the One Book author, Norris
will visit our eight cities
statewide, as well as provide a
keynote lecture at the 2014 Festival.
“Dakota” fits South Dakota
Humanities Council’s 2014 thematic exploration of the 125th
anniversary of South Dakota
statehood, which occurred November 2, 1889. SDHC themes
provide a platform for communities across the state to focus
on issues that dominate current
South Dakota discourse -- issues that affect all of us on
some level. We encourage you
to join the ongoing conversation.
More women in
farm management
More women in South Dakota
are becoming active in owning
or managing farmland, and
rural advocates say some basic
information can help them find
success and improve their land.
The Center for Rural Affairs
recently held a workshop to provide some tips.
Traci Bruckner, a senior associate for agriculture and conservation policy with the
Center, points out women often
find they have to work with tenants on their land.
"There's a lot of women who
are left holding the land after
their husbands pass away, and
they're working with tenants,”
Bruckner said. “And they want
to do as much as they can to
preserve the conservation on
the land, and sometimes, they
find that they run into a little
bit of trouble working with
some tenants who don't think
women have the position to exercise their authority there."
Workshop participants got a
tour of local fields and a demonstration of soil testing. Bruckner says the Center plans to do
several similar workshops each
year.
She says the center worked
with the women in understanding how important cover crops
can be.
"With the cropping systems
that, you know, make up the
dominant landscape on the
agricultural land, it's really important that farmers consider
integrating cover crops,” Bruckner said.
Bruckner says the center also
touched on some legal issues
that could affect landowners interested in conservation.

Downy mildew found
in sunflower fields
By South Dakota Ag Connection
Downy mildew is showing up
in North and South Dakota sunflower fields.
More than 70 sunflower fields
have been surveyed in the last
two weeks and about two-thirds
have downy mildew, reports the
National Sunflower Association.
However, incidence levels are
generally very low, and only
eight of the fields had incidence
levels higher than five percent.
Still, the high amount of downy
mildew is not surprising given
the wet May and June.
Downy mildew is caused by a
soil borne pathogen that can survive for many years in the soil.
When rains occur soon after
planting, the pathogen produces
swimming spores that infect
roots and cause a systemic infection. Infected plants will often
die, but if they survive, will not
yield. However, yield loss doesn't
usually occur unless downy
mildew occurs in large patches of
the field.
No management tools are effective once downy mildew infection occurs, according to the
NSA.

project coordinator, Altman Studeny.
In commemoration of
South Dakota’s 125th Anniversary of Statehood, he is undertaking a state wide community
project that centers around the
planting of trees in each of South
Dakota’s sixty-six counties. He
will be driving through collecting
two-and-a-half gallons of soil
from a site in every county. Soil
collected will be mixed together,
repotted in those sixty six buckets and a Bur Oak tree planted in
each. He wanted each county to
pick a place that carries some
particular historical weight in
your region. Meyer talked with
the Historical Society and it was
decided to go ahead and plant the
tree at the Pickler Mansion.
From July 19 to Aug. 24, those
trees will be displayed at the
Governor’s Grove on State Capitol grounds in Pierre.
