IT & ITES
According to International Data Corporation (IDC), the Indian IT Services
market is expected to grow at the rate of 8.4 per cent in 2014 to Rs. 476,356
million (US$ 7.88 billion)
Indian companies are now spending more on IT products and services, IT security
operations capabilities.
According to reports by Gartner, the Indian market fro security infrastructure
and services is expected to grow from US$ 989 million this year to US$ 1.4 billion
by 2017. The Indian IT infrastructure market which includes server, storage and
networking equipment is expected to grow by 4 per cent in 2014 to touch US$ 17
billion in FY 15.
FDI in recent months
The global survey of leading consultancy firm EY, earlier known as
Ernst & Young, has ranked India as the most attractive investment
destination followed by Brazil and China at second and third
position, respectively. With relaxation in FDI norms to boost
investment sentiments, India has emerged as the most attractive
investment destination surpassing neighbouring China and the US,
the report says.
“With sharp currency depreciation and opening up of FDI in
various sectors, India has become an attractive destination for
foreign investors, EY said.
In August, the government announced relaxation in Foreign Direct
Investment (FDI) norms in many sectors, including multi - brand
retail and telecom.
According to the global consultancy firm, due to the present
macro - economic pressures and heavy debt pile, several Indian
companies are looking to divest non-core business.” This has
created a large opportunity for foreign players vying for a greater
role in the Indian market,” it added.
The data by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion
(DIPP) shows that during April-June in this fiscal, the foreign
inflows recorded a growth of 34 per cent.
FDI was at $ 7.23 billion in April-June, 2014-15 compared to
$5.39 billion in April-June 2013-14. In June 2013, the country had
received FDI worth $ 1.44 billion.
While in July FDI flows into India more than doubled to $ 3.5
billion. In July 2013, the country had received FDI worth $ 1.65
billion.
The inflow trend saw a decline of about 10 per cent in August this
year to $ 1.27 billion, the lowest figure in the last eight months. In
August 2013, the country had received FDI worth $ 1.40 billion.
Last time in December 2013, FDI into India was $ 1.10 billion.
Favourable
Democracy
The youth demographic of India is attracting everyone’s
attention: 65 per cent of its population is 35 or under. Called the
game-changers, approximately 150 million Indians are between
the age group of 18-23 years.
What is remarkable about this group of Indian is they are the
most aspirational. And the most impatient. This has led to the
exodus of youth form rural India to urban areas in search of
employment. The rural population has decreased from 82.1 per
cent in 1960 to 16.9 per cent in 2010. During the same period,
urbanised parts of the country increased from 17.9 per cent of
the population to 30.1 per cent.
It is projected that by 2040 nine out of every 10 Indians will
belong to the global middle class group’ with higher expenditure
capabilities. Seventy per cent of these expenditures will be on
discretionary items like health, entertainment and recreation.

Bihar ministers get
hang of tablet PCs
Patna:
Catching up with the latest in information technology,
Bihar ministers received training in computer and tablet
computer operation but only a handful of them turned up
at the workshop held for them.
Inaugurating the day-long workshop, Chief Minister
Jitan Ram Manjhi told the ministers that no one could
cheat them if they were abreast with information
technology and he would try to train himself in IT.
“Today the entire world is talking about information
technology and hightech. If we lag behind then our
country and state will be deprived of development,” Manjhi
said in his inaugural address. He said be it politicians or
officials functional knowledge in computer, laptop and
internet is necessary.
The chief minister exuded pleasure that Bihar has
registered more development in wi-fi in comparison to
other states and the world’’s longest wi-fi zone had been
established in Patna. The ministers were taught to use the
device by experts of National Institute of Electronic.
Apple accuses
China of hacking
A
pple has said its iCloud server has been the
target of “intermittent” attacks, hours after
a security blog said Chinese authorities had
been trying to hack into the system.
Apple did not specifically mention China, but
posted a security bulletin citing the hack attempts,
and indicating its cloud computing platform had not
been breached.
“ T h e s e att a ck s
don’’t compromise
iCloud servers, and
they don’’t impact
iCloud sign in on
iOS devices or
Macs running OS X
Yosemite using the
Safari browser.”
Yosemite
is the
newest
operating system for Mac computers and iOS is the
platform for mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads.
Late yesterday, the security website GreatFire.org
which monitors online censorship in China claimed
that “Chinese authorities” had launched the attacks
on Apple’’s iCloud.
“This is clearly a malicious attack on Apple in an
effort to gain access to usernames and passwords
and consequently all data stored on iCloud such as
iMessages, photos, contacts, etc,” according to the blog,
which said it appeared to coincide with the launch in
China of the newest iPhone.
“While the attacks on Google and Yahoo enabled
the authorities to snoop on what information Chinese
were accessing on those two platforms, the Apple
attack is different,” GreatFire said.
Apple maintained that some celebrity accounts were
compromised in a “targeted attack” to gain passwords,
but that it found no breach of the iCloud or other
Apple systems.

Indian IT firms in the dock: US reports
US-based The Center

restrictive employment
contracts on employees
they send to the US.
It said companies resort
to coercive tactics such
as threatening H-1B
employees of holding back
their salaries and benefits
if they try to change their
jobs.
CIR’s extensive reporting
is said to be based on a
year-long investigation, and
on documents filed with
government agencies and
in courts across the US and
interviews with dozens of
workers.
It said it found the tools
of intimidation included
restrictive employment
contracts signed by workers
unaware of their rights,
as well as exploitation
of legal loopholes. The

Indian IT companies

instance, filed 32,379 Labor

2013 fiscal, followed by Tata

a MyVisajobs report said.

British online dating
service admits to
fake profiles
London:
A British-based online dating service admitted to US regulators today
that it created fake, computer-generated profiles to lure users into upgraded
memberships.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), in its first law enforcement
action against a dating service, said it reached a settlement with JDI Dating
Ltd, which operates the websites cupidswand.com, flirtcrowd.com and
findmelove.com.
The company agreed to pay USD 616,165 in refunds and to stop the
practice of using phony user profiles.
According to the FTC, the websites offered a free plan that allowed users
to set up a profile with personal information and photos.
But when users set up a free profile, they began to receive messages that
appeared to be from other members living nearby, expressing romantic
interest. In order to connect with these fictitious members, the users had to
upgrade to a paid membership at a price of USD 10 to USD 30 per month.
FTC officials said the messages were almost always from fake, computergenerated profiles designed to closely mimic the profiles of real people.
The fake profiles were indicated with a small “v” that indicates these were
virtual profiles, but most users did not notice or understand this, according
to the agency.

Facebook no,
Zuckerberg
is ok
in China
Beijing:
China may ban Facebook, but not its
co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg,
who delighted an audience of students
in Beijing with a 30-minute chat in his
recently learned Mandarin Chinese.
There was no explicit discussion of
China’’s ban on the social media site,
which has been in place since 2009,
though an indirect reference to it drew
laughter during the question-and-answer
session yesterday at the prestigious
Tsinghua University. Both Zuckerberg
and the university posted video clips of
the Q&A online.
Zuckerberg, whose company has long
sought to enter the Chinese market,
noted that the social media giant already
helps some Chinese companies in
foreign markets, citing computer maker
Lenovo’’s ads on Facebook in India.
“Speaking of China, I have a more
difficult question for Mark, which I
hope will not get me fired. What are
Facebook’’s plans in China?” asked the
forum facilitator and Facebook employee
Wei Xiaoliang, to laughter and applause
from the audience.
“We are already in China,” Zuckerberg
said in Chinese, to more laughter. “We
help Chinese companies gain customers
abroad.” “We want to help the rest of
the world connect to China.” Beijing
promotes Internet use for business and
education but bans material deemed
subversive or obscene and blocks access
to foreign websites run by human rights
and Tibet activists and some overseas
news and social media sites.
On China’’s social media, many
microbloggers noted the irony that
Zuckerberg’’s famous creation is blocked
in China.
Designer David Wang, in an interview
in downtown Beijing, said he would be
happy if Facebook was allowed across the
so-called Great Firewall of China.
“Because now we have to use software
to jump the Wall if we want to access
Facebook,” he said.
Zuckerberg visited Beijing this week
as a newly-appointed member to the
advisory board for Tsinghua University
School of Economics and Management.
He met Tuesday with Tsinghua President
Chen Jining to discuss cooperation in
education, according to a statement by
Tsinghua.
Zuckerberg’’s Chinese pronunciation
was far from fluent and some native
speakers said it was a “challenge” to
understand him. But he was able to
maintain intelligible conversation for a
half-hour and the students responded
with warm cheers for his effort and
laughter at his humour.
Zu cke r b e rg m ar r i e d C h i ne s e American Priscilla Chan in 2012, and
set himself the goal of learning Mandarin
in 2010.
He said yesterday that he wanted to
learn the language partly because his
wife’’s grandmother only speaks Chinese.
He recalled informing the grandmother
of the upcoming marriage.
“Priscilla and I decided to get married,
so I told her grandmother in Chinese,
and she was very surprised,” Zuckerberg
said.
He said China is a great country and
hopes that learning the language will
help him learn its culture. “The Chinese
language is difficult, and I speak English,
but I like challenges,” Zuckerberg said.
Chinese ‘Xiaomi 1s’ is a spy gadget
New Delhi, Nov 3:
IAF personnel and their families have been asked to desist from
using Chinese ‘’Xiaomi Redmi 1s’’ phones as these are believed
to be transferring data to their servers in China and could be a
security risk.
“F-secure, a leading security solution company, recently carried out
a test of Xiaomi Redmi 1s, the company’’s budget smartphone, and
found that the phone was forwarding carrier name, phone number,
IMEI (the device identifier) plus numbers from address book and
text messages back to Beijing,” says an advisory issued by the IAF
to its personnel.
The IAF note, issued some weeks back, has been prepared by
the intelligence unit based on the inputs from Indian Computer
Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), according to IAF sources.
Emails were sent by PTI to the company for its response on this
development but those remained unanswered.
However, in a general statement two days back, the company
had said it was fully committed to storing its users’’ data securely
at all times.
The company said it is migrating some data on non-Chinese
customers away from its servers in Beijing due to performance and
privacy considerations.
It said that earlier this year, its e-commerce engineering teams
started migrating its global e-commerce platforms and user data for
all international users from their Beijing data centers to Amazon
AWS data centers in California (USA) and Singapore.
This migration process will be completed by the end of October
and will benefit users in all of our international markets Hong
Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan.
Incidentally, the Taiwanese government is investigating whether
Xiaomi Inc is a cyber security threat due to privacy issues.
Earlier this year, security solutions provider F-Secure had, in a
report, demonstrated how a Xiaomi Redmi 1S phone was sending
data, including the user’’s IMEI, phone number, and phone numbers
of contacts added to the phone book to a remote server.
Based on the report and inputs from Indian Computer Emergency
Response Team (CERT-In), the IAF note was prepared.“We don’’t
have a revolutionary product. Like many other messaging services,
we also offer messaging, backup, cloud services to our customers.
We also have the highest standards of encryption to ensure that
users’’ data is safe,” he added. Xiaomi entered the Indian market
in July this year with its Mi3 smartphone priced at Rs 13,999
through e-Commerce major Flipkart.

An Israeli company has developed a “solar

Los Angeles:
A Silicon Valley IT company in the US has been ordered
to pay USD 40,000 in back wages to eight Indian workers
who worked up to 122 hours a week and received as little
as USD 1.21 an hour.
The Electronics for Imaging Inc (EFI) also paid a fine of
USD 3,500 following a federal investigation into its wage
and hour practices, which had included paying its workers
in Indian Rupees and having them work up to 122 hours
a week in the company’’s IT department.
The employees who were paid to help install a computer network when the company moved its home office
from Foster City to Fremont, the San Jose Mercury News

An anonymous tip prompted the US Department of

USD 40,000 in back wages paid to the eight employees and
a fine of USD 3,500 for Electronics for Imaging.
The data storage provider said that it had brought in
some of its IT employees from Bangalore to do the jobs in
Fremont between September 8 and December 21, 2013.
“During this process we unintentionally overlooked
laws that require even foreign employees to be paid based
on local US standards,” the company said in a statement.
A wage and hour division with the Department of Labour in San Francisco said that the back wages were based
on the gap between the USD 1.21 an hour that was paid by
EFI and the California minimum wage of USD 8 an hour.
“We are not going to tolerate this kind of behaviour
from employers,” said Susana Blanco, a district director
of the US Labour Department’’s wage and hour division
in San Francisco.
YouTube to offer paid,
ad-free video service
YouTube, the popular online
video service owned by Google
Inc, is planning to offer a paid,
ad-free version, the head of the
site said.
The move would represent a
significant change for the world’s
No. 1 online video website, whose free videos, often accompanied by short commercials, attract more than 1 billion
users a month.
“There are going to be cases where people are going to say
‘I don’t want to see the ads or I want to have a different kind
of experience’,” Susan Wojcicki, a Google senior vice president
who heads the YouTube business, said at the Code/Mobile
technology conference in Half Moon Bay, California late on
Monday.
Wojcicki, who became the head of YouTube in February
after several years overseeing Google’s multibillion-dollar
advertising business, said a paid video service was “near-term”
but provided few details, including how much a subscription
would cost.
In May 2013, YouTube launched a pilot programme that
allowed individual content creators to charge consumers a
subscription fee to access a particular “channel” of videos.
Wojcicki on Monday described a broader subscription service
in which consumers would pay to access an ad-free version
of YouTube’s vast collection of videos.
“We’re early in that process. But if you look at media over
time, most of them have both ads and subscription,” he said.

Microsoft was having childishness fever, Steve Balmer

And about Apple, Samsung and Google:
Apple’s core is to make things usable, and well MS wanted
to spread features. And we know who wins when it comes to
features vs. usability. If they had put a little more logic they

‘Cloud’ lifts
San Francisco;
Microsoft has reported quarterly profits ahead
of most expectations, as revenues got a boost from
its Xbox consoles and Internet “cloud” services for
enterprises.
Net profit in the quarter dipped to USD 4.5 billion
from USD 5.2 billion in the same period a year ago,

Device to merge
wi-fi, 3g, ethernet
Connectify has developed Connectify Dispatch
- Connectify for exactly the same purpose. It can
be used to merge Wi-fi, ethernet and 3G/4G LTE
connections too.
It has configurable priority settings too, so you
can set your 3G connection to be the failover if
your Wi-fi is flaky.
Here’s their description from their website:
Multiple Connections, Maximum Speed
For the first time, you can connect to the
coffee shop Wi-Fi and your 4G mobile device
simultaneously, using both Internet connections
for their combined speed, and increased
reliability.
With Connectify Dispatch, you can even use
two different Wi-Fi networks at the same time. Just
connect a secondary USB Wi-Fi card (in addition
to your laptop’s on-board Wi-Fi card) and Dispatch
does the rest. At the click-of-a-button, you’ll be
cruising the web at warp speed, using the combined
throughput of both wireless networks.
Even if you lose connectivity on one of those
networks, Dispatch keeps you online, moving all
of your traffic onto the working connection until
both networks become available again.
But thats only one scenario, with Dispatch you
can connect to as many Internet connections as
you have adapters for. Tethered smart phones,
ethernet and wired connections, 3G and 4G mobile
broadband adapters, Wi-Fi and MiFi – you name
it, Dispatch can use it. The more connections you
have, the faster you’ll go!
Automatic Failover
Using multiple connections, Connectify Dispatch
always gives you the most reliable Internet access
possible. Furthermore, Dispatch allows you to
select priority levels for your available Internet
connections.
By setting a connection to “Backup” Dispatch
will only access it in the event that you lose
connectivity on all of your “Primary” Internet
connections. This way, you can easily designate
a metered 3G or 4G modem, tethered device, or
other expensive mobile broadband connection to
be used only when absolutely necessary or in case of
emergency.
Social media helps curbing HIV
Los Angeles:
Tweets and Facebook posts could be a new tool to help curb the
spread of HIV, scientists have found.
Although public health researchers have focused early applications of social media on reliably monitoring the spread of diseases
such as the flu, Sean Young of the Center for Digital Behavior at
the University of California, Los Angeles, said in the future, social
media might predict and even change biomedical outcomes.
“We know that mining social media will have huge potential
benefits for many areas of medicine in the future, but we’’re still
in the early stages of testing how powerful these technologies will
be,” Young said.
With the right tools in place, he said, social media offers a rich
source of psychological and health-related data generated in an
environment in which people are often willing to share freely.
Insights gleaned from social media could be used to help governments, public health departments, hospitals, and caretakers monitor
people’’s health behaviours “to know where, when, and how we
might be able to prevent HIV transmission,” Young believes.
In an article in the Cell Press journal Trends in Microbiology,
Young detailed a social-media-based intervention in which African American and Latino men who have sex with men shared a
tremendous amount of personal information through social media,
including when or whether they had ‘’come out,’’ as well as experiences of homelessness and stigmatisation.
Researchers found that people who discussed HIV prevention
topics on social media were more than twice as likely to later request
an HIV test.
In the context of HIV prevention, tweets have also been shown
to identify people who are currently or soon to engage in sexual- or
drug-related risk behaviours.
Those tweets can be mapped to particular locations and related
to actual HIV trends, researchers found.
What’’s needed now is the updated infrastructure and sophisticated toolkits to handle all of those data, Young said, noting that
there are about 500 million communications sent every day on
Twitter alone.
He is working with a team of University of California computer
scientists to meet that challenge now.-PTI
