2015 ArtsWave Annual Report
2015 ANNUAL REPORT in action 2015 ANNUAL REPORT CAMPAIGN RESULTS 2015 SOURCES OF SUPPORT Individual (Non-Workplace) Corporate 9% 27% 6% 63% INDIVIDUALS 4% 54% Restricted Foundations/Misc. 461 What an incredible year! On April 30, we celebrated our largest campaign ever with more than 42,000 donors contributing $12,250,000 – a new national record. In the coming months, ArtsWave will invest those dollars in more than 100 arts and community organizations across the region that are creating a more connected community and a vibrant economy. Individual (Workplace Campaigns) COMPANIES/ ORGANIZATIONS/ RESTAURANTS I’ve heard a few comments that these results are impressive for “a city our size.” As much as I understand the sentiment, I think we are selling ourselves short with this qualifier. With this campaign, Cincinnati has done something that other cities, large or small or in between, can only envy. We’ve shown our unique capacity for collaborative action around things that we value—namely, a thriving, innovative, and inclusive arts scene. participated in this year’s campaign NUMBER OF DONORS 42,184 40,076 38,487 37,854 2011 There have been lots of heroes along the way. ArtsWave’s Community Campaign Chairman Tom Williams and his entire Cabinet worked tirelessly to push us to our goal, and then to our stretch goal. Tom jumped all in to meet the challenge of surpassing ArtsWave’s own record set in 2014 — and he did it with the astute recognition that other economic development projects he has helped to drive are about the region’s “hardware,” 37,181 2012 256 2013 2014 2015 COMPANIES/ ORGANIZATIONS ran workplace giving campaigns TOM WILLIAMS Chair of the 2015 campaign and Partner, President & CEO of North American Properties “ its infrastructure. The arts, and education, are its “software”… and just as essential for fueling the region’s growth. We are so grateful to Tom, the Campaign Cabinet, our Board President Lisa Sauer and our Board of Trustees for their vision and leadership. On the ground level, thousands of volunteers, workplace campaign coordinators, CincySings participants, and arts partners worked to inspire giving by sharing examples of ArtsWave in Action. As we gather more data and stories about the collective impact of the arts, more companies and donors are stepping up to provide support. More support leads to more investment and leads to greater impact for all who live here. For any region, large or small, the results of this campaign would be extraordinary. Yet it feels like a uniquely Cincinnati story — the kind of thing that can only happen in a place where everyone feels a collective responsibility to improve the quality of life for everyone. Together, we’re creating community through the arts. ALECIA KINTNER President & CEO Expanding the base of support to include more companies was an important evolution of this campaign and one that I hope sets a strong direction for the future. A combined campaign of this magnitude has real impact on our development and identity as a region, and cannot be taken for granted. ” 1 2015 ANNUAL REPORT CAMPAIGN RESULTS What does it mean to be the largest community arts campaign in the country? $12,250,000 in community contributions is a big number… But it doesn’t capture the full scope of our region’s amazing commitment to the arts. Here are a few more impressive numbers from the 2015 campaign: All of this adds up to a more connected and vibrant region. Thank you for helping us exceed our 2015 goal and for keeping Cincinnati at the top of the list for community support for the arts. 461 2,500 7,660 12,000 2,200 made corporate gifts and/or ran workplace campaigns at $75 ArtsPass level, thanks in part to a new incentive of Cincinnati Reds tickets and an estimated 42,000 total donors at Macy’s Arts Sampler weekend sold to April Cincinnati Reds games, with $5 per ticket going to ArtsWave COMPANIES • 65 new companies NEW GIFTS NEW DONORS ATTENDEES TICKETS • $152,000+ from small and mid-size companies 1,700 93 4,500 at ArtsWave’s CincySings event, hosted by Drew Lachey participating in CincySings (under 40) contributing more than $600,000 ATTENDEES 2 SINGERS YP DONORS 1,000+ LEADERSHIP DONORS (giving more than $1,500 each) 200+ NEW LEADERSHIP DONORS 100+ ARTS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS supported by the campaign 350+ WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP ROUNDTABLE MEMBERS 250+ PEOPLE SHOWED US THEIR “ARTSWAVE” VIA SOCIAL MEDIA on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram 1,000+ EMPLOYEE CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR VOLUNTEERS CAMPAIGN HISTORY: A RECORD-BREAKING YEAR 2011 $11 2012 $11.2 2013 $11.5 2014 $12 2015 $12,250,000 0 in millions $3 $6 $9 $12 3 $15 2015 ANNUAL REPORT CAMPAIGN RESULTS ArtsWave expanded several creative initiatives to increase awareness, engagement, and contributions to the 2015 campaign. More than 30 local restaurants, bars, and breweries supported the campaign with “Toast to the Arts” drink offers and events that allowed community members to dine out and give back. The Cincinnati Reds extended their partnership with ArtsWave by creating a special discount on Reds tickets for the month of April and offering 2 free Reds tickets to donors who increased their gift. highlights of the campaign More than 12,000 people attended the Macy’s Arts Sampler weekend showcasing the area’s arts organizations and the wide variety of experiences they offer. A special day of events at Music Hall brought families from all over the tri-state and culminated in a joint concert sponsored by Dewey’s Pizza. In 2015, ArtsWave focused on increasing engagement in the arts through a wide variety of partnerships. From employee choirs onstage at Music Hall to local restaurant guests making a Toast to the Arts, people across the region made new connections through ArtsWave. ArtsWave’s CincySings choral competition featuring employee choirs from top regional companies expanded in its second year. Choirs from 12 local companies performed in front of an audience of 1,800 at Cincinnati Music Hall on April 8. The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./US Bank Foundation provided a $100,000 challenge grant to match new and increased gifts from community members. And, the Western & Southern Financial Fund matched all new and increased leadership gifts up to $100,000. Participants in these activities become more deeply invested not just in the arts, but in the region. The more people are engaged in the arts, the greater the ripple effect of benefits are felt by the entire community. 4 Cincinnati Public Schools kick off their ArtsWave 2015 campaign Employees from Givaudan celebrate with Mr. Red Macy’s Arts Sampler 2015 Fifth Third Bank CincySings team with the Gapper FULL PAGE IMAGE: Cincinnati Pops at Great American Ball Park Arts Alive! Realized we — and the arts we support — needed to change or risk irrelevancy. 78% 1 2 DATA ArtsWave’s citizen donors are not the same people as local arts consumers. 78% of ArtsWave donors had not visited one of the major arts institutions in the past 5 years. TREND Corporate funders asking “What is the quantifiable impact of our investment in the arts?” 3 RESEARCH Public values two key community benefits of the arts – regardless of personal experience. 4 INSIGHT Citizen donors saw the Fine Arts Fund brand as reinforcing negative stereotypes about the arts: expensive, exclusive, old-fashioned. 2010 1 NEW NAME AND BRAND 2 ArtsWave brand designed to be inclusive, innovative, and inspiring to citizen donors. NEW MISSION/ GRANTMAKING PROCESS Arts Community Impact Agenda – two goals aligned to what the public values: 1) More Connected Community; 2) More Vibrant Economy. 2012 Inspiring New Support and Innovation $11 $12.25 MILLION MILLION 2015 6 1 3 Repositioning for Relevance and Sustainability INCREASED SUPPORT In the aftermath of the Great Recession, new brand and agenda helps to rebuild the Community Campaign – flat at $11 million in 2009, 2010, and 2011; increasing steadily to $12.25 million (largest ever) in 2015. 4 IMPACT & INNOVATION Arts organizations began learning to measure their community impact and innovating new ways to increase that impact. Charting a Path to the Future BLUEPRINT FOR COLLECTIVE ACTION ArtsWave introduces a 10-year action plan to drive collective impact on community goals important to citizen donors. 2 COLLECTIVE ACTION INSPIRES INCREASED INVESTMENT The more we work together to create impact, the more relevant we are to the community and the more the community invests in the arts, which allows for even greater impact. LISA SAUER Board Chair, ArtsWave and Vice President Product Supply, Global Home Products & External Supply Solutions, P&G “ Our regional arts organizations have become more adept at measuring impact and leveraging it in communication with patrons, donors and ArtsWave. ArtsWave is building on this momentum as we look for opportunities to align the collective impact of the arts with broader community priorities and reach more people across the region. ” 7 2015 ANNUAL REPORT CAMPAIGN RESULTS ArtsWave supports more than 100 arts organizations in 35 communities across the region. in action across the region A RTSWAV E GR ANT RECIPIENTS: SE P T E MB E R 2014 - AUG UST 2015 NORTHERN KENTUCKY Behringer-Crawford Museum Bellevue Neighborhood Association The Carnegie Kentucky Symphony Orchestra Northern Kentucky University Roundabout Opera for Kids (ROKCincy) Union Community Theatre WEST NORTH EAST Arts Connect Springfield Township Blue Ash-Montgomery Symphony Orchestra Artsy Fartsy Cincinnati Landmark Productions Epic Actors Workshop and Choir, Inc.
