Welcome members and readers to this edition of the Owners Bulletin. The new season is now underway,
and thankfully winter is now releasing the grip that has seen snow falls over a widespread, and
diverse geographical area of the country.
I congratulate the owners and connections of all awards at the recent Thoroughbred Annual awards in Hastings. The stars of last season will undoubtedly
play very significant roles in this season also.
The recent roadshow of the Thoroughbred code has outlined the future, as seen by the recently elected Board. It is a real disappointment to see the
revocation of the “Free Racing Model”.This had, until the decline in betting turnovers, in the last season provided owners with free nomination, acceptance,
and riding fees. It also encompassed a significant amount of GST, that was recovered, because the service provider was registered, as opposed to the fact
that a large number of owners are not GST registered.
The current proposal, will provide, increased revenue from percentages for trainers and jockeys, but the vast majority of owners, will in effect be
disadvantaged, It will in fact highlight the true costs of participation, and the frank requirement that horses likely to be successful in one or two
assignments, will in all likelihood be put aside.
It is a real concern of mine that, this along with a declining foal crop, is going to erode our market share, and therefore our distribution, in the longer term.
I do however, understand the concepts, as proposed by the Board, and encourage them in their endeavours to effect changes that will secure the long
term success and viability of the code.

MEMBERS INPUT NEEDED
The Rugby Word Cup has caused the NZTROF AGM to be
deferred until November due to travel difficulties. However
local associations will not be as affected and area notices
for their AGMs will be posted in due course.
The NZTROF like all democratic organizations can be
made stronger by increased participation of its members.
Some associations have reported that they are hoping for
enthusiastic members to come forward with their ideas
and abilities to lend a hand.
Your executive urge members to give this consideration.
Over time, replenishment of ideas and personnel must
happen.
The governance of racing is changing and we owners have
by far the largest stake in the game. It is imperative that we
have a strong voice and for that we need vitality.

Hello Readers, Here is our new trial format posted out in (we hasten to say) its clear
“biodegradable!!” wrap. No Green issues here. We hope you enjoy the content and
again we invite your input and comment.
Well its spring at last and a new season is well under way. A lot of horses are
coming back and I was excited to see our boy back in a box the other day.
Secretary Jim Keyte reports the subs are pouring in and the uptake of Dual
Membership has been great. You will see a lot of new members on page 14.
This is very gratifying in two ways. One is that we are building well and the second
is that it seems people are reading our words and are with us.
Thank you to the people who emailed me to say they enjoyed the previous issue.
I forwarded your messages to our contributors group. We were all very chuffed
to get them.
This issue again features people who “put back” into racing. You will all know of
Bob Vance and of his racing exploits but there is another side to him. Bob is no
“one trick pony” as you will see.
Another character is Ted McLachlan who in his inimitable and assiduous way
boosts the turnover of the TAB with his free email tip sheets.
Then there is our website engineer Julia Orlova who has lately upgraded our site
www.racehorseowner.co.nz to include a sponsors menu on our HOME page.

Moonee Valley Racing Club is back with the 2011 Cox Plate promotion “25 Years
Since the “Race Of The Century”, Bone Crusher v (Our) Waverley Star. We have gone
a bit “arty” (hope you like it) here, with a photo essay of RED as his owner family
call him. I asked the photographer permission to use the recent pics of RED taken
a few weeks ago. Here is the reply received.
Hi Neil,
I am happy for you to use my images. Our big red horse is not so cooperative
to photograph, but I did manage to get a couple of nice ones. If you could
just put: photos by www.sharlenemitchell.com that would be great.
I contract to The Auckland Trotting Club and have been taking photos at
Alexandra Park for the past 10 years, so am no stranger to photographing
Horses. I also worked for Race Images Palmerston North doing the gallops
for around 5 years.
And yes, Peter is my Dad, and I was 15 when Red walked off the truck at
Ritchies’ stables in Ellerslie, when he was a two year old. I was allowed
to ride him, but once he became good, I got kicked off. Was never happy
about that.
I did all the work with him after he retired. We led out two Cox Plates, two
Melbourne Cups, and we walked up and down the main streets of Sydney
and Melbourne. I did this kind of thing until he reached 21. Then I put an
end to it. It really was his turn to enjoy the paddock and he shares that
with my eventer. I have had a lot of fun with the big Red horse. He is part
of the family. However he can be a rat bag as well, and still walks all over
you when you shift him from paddock to paddock. My Mum spoils him
something shocking, but I guess he deserves it.
Anything else you would like, please don’t hesitate to ask. I could tell you
some stories about Red that’s for sure. He is seriously special.

AUCKLAND

Auckland Chairman Ken Cramer Roberts and I
attended the NZTR region meeting at Ellerslie. It
was chaired by NZTR Board chairman Matthew
Goodson. With the material handed out and
from CEO Greg Purcell’s presentation it was
apparent that the team have a good grip on the
situation.
In our opinion the loss of “free racing” is a real
disappointment only offset to some degree
by a stabilization in stakes. At last we have
handicapping and programming reviews and
advantageous changes surely pending. We are
hopeful that the fortunes of racing will trend
upwards in the new season ahead.
After the meeting we were chatting with an
Avondale Jockey Club committeeman and he
reported that the club had received a grant of
around $380k for work on the track including
drainage and the first meeting back is scheduled
for Anzac Day next year.
We hear that the recent Spinal Injury Trust day
meeting at Counties went well. Despite a day with
poor weather and a small crowd over $9000 was
raised for the trust. Spokesman Trevor Harrison
conveys his thanks to those who contributed.
Great Northern Day – Ellersie – 3 September

It was a testing day for the horses in the deep holding
ground. A day when a few kilos extra made a world
of difference. Nonetheless, both feature races were
won in commanding style. Remarkably both winners
were mares.
The 119th Great Northern Hurdles went to the front
running Southern Countess, an 8yo Stark South mare out of Margi’s Countess. She is owned and trained
by the Brosnan family from Matamata. Favourite, Seeking The Silver was 4½ lengths back and Solid Steal
ran on into third.
Many people had come to see if Hypnotize could break the record and win four Great Northern Steeples.
It was not to be . The race was taken out with a remarkable home straight sprint by Ima Heroine. Proud
owner/trainer Ann Browne said she gave her mare little chance at the top of the straight and had never
seen a horse finish a Northern at such speed. Ann has seen many Northerns and this win was her 11th in
the race.
The race had heart stopping drama. Franconero dropped his rider early when midfield then ran and
jumped riderless up to the lead. Attempts by the Clerk of the Course to make the situation safer, seemed
to not succeed. But the horse swerved out and jumped the running rail. He galloped across the track
proper ran through the gate, down the lane and through the birdcage. It looked as if he would take on
the high steel fence at the end for a moment, but stopped just in time.
Back to the race – Ann Browne’s previous winner of this race, Fair King led down the hill for the last time,
took a good break in the straight and looked home for all money. But in the shadow of the post he was
done and was overtaken by Myths and Legends and also Hypnotize running on bravely.

Some Members’ Happenings.
Max Donnelly from Pirongia, has been a member for 6 years. That was around when he changed
direction from riding/breeding/showing Western horses and moved from up north to Waikato, to
become more involved with thoroughbreds and racing them. He currently races the filly Elusive
Lass, from the stable of Paul Shailer in Matamata. Paul is a new trainer with good credentials after
time as foreman to Chris Waller in Sydney.
Max operates a 40 acre agistment property with all facilities and owners can phone him on
07 825 9943.
Having horses trained in the South Island by Rick Donnelly at Ashburton, afforded them some
great holidays at many and varied places and racecourses in the past. Recently their very promising
filly, Elle Tresor, by Le Bec Fin, ran a further second placing at New Plymouth (23 July). She is trained
by K and B Hawtin at Te Awamutu. In thirteen starts she has won twice and placed three times. Their
other current contender is Miss Pelear who looked of perfect manners on July 29th at Te Rapa,
when she gave her owners a birthday treat winning very nicely, ears pricked, no whip and going
away. She was ridden by Lyndsay Satherley
The Guises daughter teaches French, and Elle Tresor means “she’s an angel”, while (Miss) Pelear is
said to mean of angry or stroppy disposition. Paul and Maureen are trialing a Spartacus – Spot of
Luck 2yo gelding at the Cambridge trials shortly. Their fun and purposeful travels with horses has
tempted them to cast their thoughts further afield to, perhaps, Queensland next year.
One of our oldest members is Roy Demler from Te Awamutu. Roy’s story takes quite a bit of telling
as at 87 years, he goes back a long way. With son Terry and Irene, they bred and raced “Our Orb” to
win 4 races, but he was lost to them in his prime when he broke a leg.
Roy understands the vagaries of racing as earlier he took 50 years to win a race. He told his trainer,
Peter Hollinshead “I’ll kiss you if you can win this race” – and win he did. I’m not sure of that outcome.
Roy has a 5yr by Sandtrap named “Bring Back Winstone” which has had two flat trials and two
jumping trials with wins in both. Trained by G Forbes, he had his first start at Matamata on 28 July.
He was ridden a patient ride by Richard Cully, but with no luck at the winning end. Keep an eye out
for this versatile and omen-named galloper.
When I first met Roy my question – ”Are you Ray Demler?” was adamantly answered with, “No, he’s
my twin brother – he raced horses too, but he won 50 races, not like me.”
Ray is from Morrinsville and raced a great jumper called Knights Star, who won many big jump
races.
Members with Jocelyn Burley’s credentials are few. She is a 100% – OWNER, breeder and trainer.
She has a two-horse stable “Happyto Keepa” and “Happiness Rules” – so aptly named from her mare
My Happiness. A win and a second with half sisters is not accomplished often at one meeting. AND
Jocelyn was “happyto kissya” jockey Rogan Norvall. The win was shared with member Sally House,
who provides house and home for these horses, within minutes of the Cambridge training track.
A member from Tirau is Murray Cole, Murray is a farmer and one who values the fact that Owners

Murray races a horse called “Chatemup” he trains
himself. The big grey has won four races had his first
run after a long lay-off on July 30th. He seemed to
enjoy it until he sighted the winning post.
He also has Leica Queen in the stable of R.Donnison,
at Matamata. Murray also is trying to get a Don
Eduardo gelding interested in racing, but he keeps
bucking the riders off – sometimes twice in one day.
One trainer doing the riding cried off (not sure if
bucked off, too) as he couldn’t afford to get hurt and
be out of action. He is at the naughty boys school.
Hautapu, Cambridge members Liz and Jeff
Fairweather who live, work and play locally, love the
local area briefs in the Bulletin. They moved from
Auckland to Cambridge some 16 years ago. They
had an interest in the show jumping world that
changed to the racing. Together they race a 3yr old
filly by King Cugat, called Cugar Park which they
bought from Australia. He is in work with Graham
Thomas. Another of theirs, Quiver, by Ustinov, is,
surprise, surprise, very big and has almost used up
his waiting period of growing into strength.
Cugar Park’s mother, Adalah, traces back to
Reasonably, a mare that was an early well loved
member of their team. Because of this connection,
they have recently bought Adalah back (after
breeding her and selling her to Australia where she
was bred for some years).

Te Kuiti members Paul Guise and his wife Maureen have enjoyed many of the diverse pleasures in
racing – breeding, naming, traveling and watching. Residing on their lifestyle block in recent times,
they are almost a rarity in racing in that they are the 100% owners of their horses.
Liz works at Brighthill Stud Farm, mostly in their
office, but she is able to turn her hand to working
with the mares and foals, doing boxes, manes, or any
other myriad of jobs waiting on most stud farms.

A $28,000 purchase at the 2008 Ready to Run sales by John Bary and Allan Chapman, Defiant won his second race from 10 starts at Wanganui.
Flaxmere baker Ian Holloway a “Gold Medalist” pie maker, saw Jungle Recipe return to form at odds 22/1 at Wanganui, scoring his fourth win. He is raced in
partnership with Helen Holloway and Roland Bartlett.

The eagerly awaited first day of spring racing at Wanganui for 2011 has just been run. It was a great day of racing.
The first of the two year old races of the season, saw the youngsters well behaved and they all jumped away well. Bay Filly Reais, Captain Rio – Heather Mac
(Keeper) won nicely for owner Racheal Frost of Otaki and co owners DR Freeman and DM Tiedermann. Hollywood Angel was second with Killa Question
third. The 800m dash was run in a quick time of 47.55.
Sharp Princess was too classy in the 1200m Open. She beat Kaap Kruis into second and Rio Moral came third. Sharp Princess was fresh up for trainer Fraser
Auret and well known owner John Bromley.
Notably, trainer Paul Belsham’s Maude, won the maiden 1600m well. She is by Le Bec Fin out of Auckland Cup winner La Sileen. She is raced by the Maude
Syndicate
The Listed 3yo fillies race 1200m, went to the very classy Dowager Queen Savabeel – Dower (Pins). She got well back for Jason Collett and flashed home to
beat Testa Secret and River Nymph. The fillies owners are Graeme Rogerson and Max Whitby. They are enjoying a golden run.
The H S Dyke Wanganui Guineas 1340m was won by Whoshe, trained by the Otto and Brooks Stable from Te Awamutu. She is a high spirited filly by Storm
Creek out of Lesley Coup (Prized) and was well ridden by Danielle Johnson. Harvey Wilson’s Cruiser was second and the McKees Fieldofdreams was third. Of
the locals Taurus was fourth and Micken wasn’t far away sixth.
Miss Danni won the rating 70, 1400m, ridden by Sam Collett, it was Sam’s first win as an owner, She races Miss Danni with her Dad Jim. Congratulations keep
it up.
The Great Northern Steeplechase held the hopes of our wonderful Wanganui jumper Hypnotize and he didn’t let us down. He carried 71.5 ks and was a
very game 3rd. The race was won by Ima Heroine with 63.5ks for Ann Browne, ridden by a very happy Matthew Gillies. Myths and Legends was second for
Jo Rathbone.

Palmerston North businessman and Manawatu Racing
Club Steward Kevin Tod has enjoyed a number of race track
successes over the last year or two but would have been
really thrilled with the win of Superturf in this year’s Aussie
Browne’s Pharmacies Winter Cup at Riccarton. Trained by
Greg Lambert for a partnership, Superturf and Masa Tanaka
had already won an open handicap at Awapuni this winter
by 10 lengths. Kevin and fellow MRC Steward John Naylor
are also partners in the promising hurdler Wotabuzz which
scored a decisive victory at its hurdle debut at Te Rapa. The
Mark Oulaghan trained galloper then ran a meritorious
second, beaten a nose in its next start at Riccarton.
Wellington racing enthusiast Ian McCarrison and his
partners would have been pleased to see their pride and
joy Tinseltown turn in two solid efforts in Queensland
back in the winter including a 2nd in the Premiers Cup.
The winner of the DHL Counties Cup earlier in the season
Tinseltown fell in the Sydney Cup in April.
Promising two year old filly Testa Secret ended her first
season with a solid 2nd, beaten a nose in the Listed
Bancrott Estates Ryder Stakes. The winner of her only
two starts, including the Listed Castletown Stakes, Testa
Secret is raced by Waikanae owner Peter Zander together
with a syndicate of mostly Taranaki rugby enthusiasts
including All Blacks Jason Eaton and Conrad Smith. Many
of the syndicate were present in the birdcage at Foxton to
celebrate the black type success. The Kevin Gray trained
filly is due to commence her 3 year old season in the Fordell
O’Leary’s Fillies Stakes at the Wanganui spring meeting.
There was more than the normal flush of success to
Smoking Chimneys win on the first day of the Hawkes Bay
Spring Carnival for Rangitikei owners Douglas Duncan
and Christopher Grace and their partners David Bennett,
Mike Hurley and trainer David Haworth. The winner of the
Foxton Cup in June, Smoking Chimneys then campaigned
in Brisbane, with the best result a 2nd at its 3rd start. The
drama really started when the partners were returning
to New Zealand after an unplaced run in the Tatts Cup.
Whilst collecting their luggage from the boot of the taxi
at Auckland Airport Douglas, Mike and David Bennett
suffered very serious leg injuries when the driver of the car
parked behind accidentally revved forward and crashed
into them. All three were admitted to Hospital. Although
very serious injuries were sustained at the time it is pleasing
to note that all are now making good progress. A win fresh
up by Smoking Chimneys would have been a pleasing fillip.
Patron of the Manawatu Association and local racing
identity Bill Freeman enjoyed a winning double at the end
of last season with the lightly raced Rising Tide. Bill races
the Shinko King gelding in partnership from out of the
Mark Oulaghan stable.
The Manawatu Association extends it congratulations to
Dr Brian Goulden on receiving the award for outstanding
contribution to racing at the 2011 Thoroughbred Racing
Awards evening in Hawkes Bay. One of the initial appointees
to the Veterinary School at Massey University, his lifelong
interest in horses and his friendship with many owners and
trainers helped lead to a large equine clinic at Massey. He
was to become a world authority on the condition “roaring”
and contributed much to the understanding of how that
affects racehorse performance. Brian was a driving force in
the establishment of the N Z Equine Research Foundation
and has also made significant contributions to the Equine
Health Association and the Equine Veterinary Association.

Keeping the Passion
Warwick Coles gets a kick out of his young ones performing on the track and there is no
better advertisement for this than his four year old ‘Traditionally’ gelding, Windwhistle.
Warwick co-trains with his father Mel and co-owns with Jill Dennison and Gerard Bell.
The $1,500, 2009 South Island Sales purchase has outclassed most his own age with 6
wins, 7 seconds, 6 thirds, 1 fourth and 2 fifths from 29 starts and earning 35 times his
purchase price in stakes.
Warwick started riding racehorses at the young age of thirteen. Mel trained them on
the home farm and they predominantly had wet track stayers. Warwick remembers
giving the horses an hour to an hour and a half of work daily and recalls a “bit of a
culture shock” when he traveled to Australia to work for Rick Hore-Lacy. Hore-Lacy’s
horses worked one round per day, generally speaking were not allowed to work up to
a sweat and never galloped more than 600 metres. Warwick said that during his year
in Australia, he only galloped one horse over 1200m. I guess he preferred his fathers’
methods as they teamed up to train together about ten years ago.
Warwick says his best horse was named ‘Trust in Ben’. He had about seven wins, also
a third in the 2000 guineas and a second in the Ray Coupland Stakes. ‘The horse was
incredible, he would muck up the start and fly home in his races, recalls Warwick. A
funny story was when Warwick bred a filly out of a mare called ‘Trustful’. He said, ‘She
was so small I sold her for $400 as a weanling and reluctantly bought her back for $600.
She had two average trials and my mum decided to name her ‘Hopeful’. She had her
first start at Timaru, got back early, looped the field on the turn and won by six lengths.
After another three wins she was sold to the United States’.
Incidentally Reon Murtha had a share in ‘Hopeful’s’ dam.
Currently Warwick is the Course Manager at Washdyke. He is a partner to Michelle,
father to Luke and says his racehorses are his hobby.
Around the time of his son’s birth and his mum becoming ill, the horses took a back
seat but with three handy racehorses and three purchases at the recent sales, Warwick
has a nice bunch of horses to keep him occupied in the early hours of the morning.
Alongside ‘Windwhistle’ he trains ‘Flying Petal’ (4 wins) and ‘Tristan’s choice’ (5 wins).
Warwick is currently breaking in a Coat’s Choice filly which is a half sister to the Michael
Pitman trained winner ‘Redfern’. The filly is owned by a loyal owner Jill Dennison.
Warwick credits his father for work he does with the horses in the morning. It helps
Warwick to get them done quickly, so he can get to the family farm, to do the lambing
beat or complete some track maintenance that is never ending.
At the time this bulletin is published, Warwick, in partnership with his father Mel, have
received the ‘Trainer of the Year Award’ at the recent Central South Island Owners and
Trainers Association Awards evening.

Gary Stewart could see Waverley Star three wide ahead.
On the bend 1000 out “Red” got pushed out and Stewart made a fateful decision. He was on the best stayer in the field. It was time
to pressure. Lance O’Sullivan on Waverley Star saw the move and eased the reins of his mount. The big Star Way chestnut flew to
the lead.
Out wider Red cornered better and took a half length lead into the straight.
But Waverley Star took it back and made it his own. Behind, The Filbert, who was the unlucky horse tried to bridge the gap. It was
a brutal task.
In the shadows of the post Gary Stewart rose in his irons, in one last desperate drive to the finish.

TED McLACHLAN
This remarkable man goes under several names. At the Te
Aroha Jockey Club where he is a committeeman, he is just
known as Ted. In the cyberworld of horse racing, tipping and
sport he is known as “Rdytdy”. When he contributed to Neil
Davis’s Formpro tipping horses, he was known as the “Waikato
Whisperer”. In Athletics he is known as “Lord Ted” for his
mastery in veterans racing over track, cross country and road.
Ted won 18 National titles, a Honolulu Marathon, a Sydney to
the Surf and an international half marathon in Malaysia.
Ted grew up in Wanganui and Wellington. His father Ted
senior was a jockey, a trainer and an owner and became the
Studmaster of Willowbank Stud, so Ted junior has been around
horses and racing people from a very early age. Among his
lifelong friends are jockeys Greg Childs, Noel Harris, Bruce
Marsh and Gary Phillips.
Ted worked in the insurance industry in Wellington and
Auckland, rising to manager in the loss management side of
the business. As a man of high principles and commitment he
was a natural to succeed. All the while his interest in racing
burned bright evidenced by him taking part in the FAIR TAX
action, which brought justice to the racing fraternities of New
Zealand.
With a desire to breed horses and a lifestyle change, Ted and
his wife Lynnda bought land just out of Morrinsville and set
up Stellar Park with a few mares. They have bred winners
including Keep Ahead who is trained by Karen Zimmerman.
Both Lynnda and Ted still work by contracting back to their
industries.
As a contribution to racing Ted sends out a free email service,
tipping horses at every North Island meeting each week.
Such was its popularity that he soon had to restrict it to 200
addresses. It goes to people living in Australia as well and
amusingly to a couple of prominent racing writers here.
It is a pity that he cannot handle more members. Recently Lynnda sent out Ted’s best
bets only, as Ted had been kicked in the head by a horse and was unwell. The messages
of concern and support that came back nearly overwhelmed them. (You will see in the
photo Ted is standing on the off side of the mare. He is trying to hide a black eye and facial
damage including a fractured cheek bone).
Teds method of selection is from assiduous observation of
trials, races and race videos. He is a firm believer in horses for
courses and track bias. Along with that is an encyclopaedic
knowledge of the game. He has selected a 308k Pick 6 and
several Quaddies over 20k. He has a very high strike rate with
debut runners and his selected Best Bets of the day.
Undoubtedly Awapuni Angles to Whangarei Whispers and all the others help the TAB
turnover in a sizeable way and we know that goes to provide stakes.
No payment is sought or made, but Lynnda and Ted have come
home to find a box of wine on the front step, left by a happy
punter. Many people email him back to tell of their successes.
At the time of writing Ted was working on filling racing syndicates for a couple of nice fillies
they have bred. A Spartacus out of a Marscay mare and an Occidental Tourist out of a Soviet
Star mare. They will be trained by Graham Richardson at Matamata.

BOB VANCE – SOFTWARE MAN
Bob Vance. You know the bloke. He is married to Jenny. He was an international jockey and so was Jenny. They both train horses together out of a
property at Takanini.
Some years ago Bob decided the computer could do a fair bit of the kind of work, he liked least. Over time he built a software programme that handles
all aspects of horse management data. It is called STABLE SIZE.
STABLE SIZE is very comprehensive and adaptable and covers a myriad of tasks such as apportioning costs and invoicing. You can store diet and
welfare data, record injury, note conformation and store all critical dates. It will even keep track of your horse covers. That is just a small sample.
The system also has scope for a DIY input of data categories.
Bob had in mind stud and stable applications when he developed the program but of course it would work for say a sport horse stable too. Also it is
portable to overseas operations. Users are updated whenever the program is refreshed.
Bob says both studs and stables run his software successfully. He cited a Studmaster who says the use of it saves him 30k a year, as well as a lot of worry.

SUNDAY 18TH SEPTEMBER 2011 AT PUKEKOHE PARK
Counties Racing Club’s Westbury Stud Karaka Classic Meeting will bring together the perfect day of entertainment featuring the prestigious Westbury Stud
Karaka Classic a Listed race. As well we host the popular Owners Function attracting over 300 owners and the TAB Challenge in which 10 teams will compete.
There will be plenty of entertainment for the public and children including a ‘Kids Corner’.
The Owners function has become an annual event to thank owners for supporting Counties Racing Club. All owners who have started their horse at Pukekohe
Park in the previous season will receive an invitation to attend the function which will be held in the Oaks Room, rsvp’s are essential.
There will be discounted house beverages and a complimentary ham carvery lunch.
Some great spot prizes will be drawn with the grand prize – A package for two at Castaways consisting of dinner, one night’s accommodation and breakfast.
