Dr. Dibble is a world renowned American Paleolithic archaeologist best known for his theory of lithic reduction and his methodological advancements in archaeological fieldwork in France, Egypt, and Morocco. He is currently Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania and Curator-in-Charge of the European Section on the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. This tour will be guided by Adrian Mialet. Mr. Mialet and Dr. Dibble have joined together to lead groups with National Geographic. Mr. Mialet has studied both history and art history at the University of Toulouse in France. He received his professional training as a National Tour Guide in English and Spanish. Mr. Mialet has found his passion in the richly ornamental prehistoric caves in the region and has lead tours with National Geographic, Smithsonian Travel, and the National History Museum of New York. In and around the town of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac are a series of prehistoric rock dwellings, the caves include some of the mostsignificant archaeological finds of the Upper Paleolithic (from about 40,000 to10,000 years ago) and Middle Paleolithic (200,000 to 40,000 years ago) periods; the Eyzies-de-Tayac caves are among a series of decorated grottoes in the area that were collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. This ancient settlement of approximately 20 dwellings once accommodated 100 residents at a time. The prehistoric site is a complex of prehistoric stone shelters more than 300 feet long, excavated and preserved by several generations of the Castanet family. Guided tour of the cave of Bernifal. Grotte de Bernifal is a cave decorated with over 100 engravings and paintings. It includes engravings of horses, bison, mammoths and ibex as well as the enigmatic tectiform (roof shaped) drawings seen in many other caves of the same period. It has changed very little in more than twelve thousand years, and has not been vandalised, since the original entrance was blocked with rubble when the last artists left To know for the group Bernifal : Access DIFFICULT Parking next to road. You will have to walk 15minutes to get into the cave. No electric system inside. At some point in the cave the access is slippery if you want to visit all the cave. Warm people that they can visit half of the cave if they don’t want to cross this slippery path. There is no bookshop, no facilities, no café,…The shelter is in the middle of the forest. Enjoy a lunch in a farm house and taste the local product. After lunch enjoy a little walk in the forest to visit a private rock shelter not open to the public. The cave has many prehistoric paintings dated to the upper Paleolithic. Depictions include deer, Megaloceros, the ibex, and mammoths as well as various schematic human figures, interpreted as wounded men, virtually identical to similar figures at Pech Merle.
