AnnualReport - Addison-Penzak JCC of Silicon Valley
Annual Report
2015-2016
Addison-Penzak JCC
of Silicon Valley
Levy Family Campus
Report from the Chair and CEO
Greetings and welcome to the Addison-Penzak Jewish
Community Center of Silicon Valley. As we look back on
2015-16, we have much to be grateful for.
In September 2015 we celebrated our building’s 10th
birthday with cake and candles in the main lobby. After
10 years, we are still growing and thriving. Our preschool
is full, our summer 2015 camp enrollment increased by
200 camper-weeks, our membership numbers are up, and
we experienced a third year-in-a-row of record-breaking,
broad-based community support for the annual APJCC
Mitzvah Project.
Leslee Adler,
Chair of the Board
Nate Stein,
CEO
From this thriving base, the JCC reached out to the
community outside our walls this year. In December we hosted the first annual community Hanukkah
event at Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, with over 2,000 museum visitors experiencing
Hanukkah and Jewish culture that day. We also hosted blood drives, participated in community
charity runs, hosted health presentations from local hospitals, and hosted a community theater
production of “Oliver.”
We also reached out to those within our walls, providing additional services to make the JCC accessible
to everyone. In July 2015, with the generous support of local donors through the Jewish Federation of
Silicon Valley, a hearing loop was installed in the APJCC Auditorium. The hearing loop allows those who
are hearing impaired to participate fully in lectures, performances, meetings, and more. In March, we
organized a free recreation day on our athletic field for children with special needs and their families to
participate in sports including baseball, basketball, soccer, and tennis.
And we reached out to the wider Jewish community, sponsoring a Birthright Israel trip, working with
Hatikvah House, and sending preschool teachers to Israel. Our Russian-Speaking Jewish Programs
have grown tremendously over the past year under the leadership of Rabbi Ilana Baird, with hundreds
attending events and classes at the JCC and around the community, and more than 1,000 followers on
our Russian Facebook page.
Sports and fitness programs continued to flourish. The JCC was voted Best Health Club in Silicon Valley
in Metro Newspaper’s reader poll again this year. That’s 8 years in a row!
Our social media engagement has also grown, especially on Facebook, and our staff have been posting
some beautiful photos on Instagram. We encourage you to get involved by following us on
facebook.com/apjcc and instagram.com/apjcc_pix.
All of this is thanks to YOU, our supporters. We couldn’t do it without you.
Todah rabah (thank you very much)!
Have a happy, healthy year.
B’Shalom,
LesleeNate

APJCC Departments at a Glance
Preschool
The APJCC Preschool had 155 children enrolled for the 2015-16 school year and was at full capacity. Our after-school
enrichment classes were varied with the addition of a Hebrew class and a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art,
math) class. All classes ran at or near capacity. We initiated a monthly study group model for ongoing staff development.
We hosted a successful day of learning for all the teachers from the five local Jewish preschools.
Summer Camp
Camp Shalom had 626 campers this past summer. We had 200 more camper-weeks than the previous year. Camp Shalom
continued the trend set last summer by bringing a shlicha (Israeli counselor) to camp. In partnership with Yavneh Day
School, Camp Shalom expanded its programming by adding three weeks of STEAM-based camps. Seasonal camps
including Winter, Ski Week, and Spring Break saw an overall rise in numbers. For the first time we ran three weeks of
Spring Break camp.
Youth and Families
Youth programming included martial arts, circus/gymnastics, soccer, tennis, swimming, and yoga. We also introduced a
new youth fitness vendor and ran a successful Bizzy Bodies program. We hosted our second annual Fun and Sports with
Friends event for children with special needs, with 80 attendees including parents and volunteers. The youth department
continued its partnership with Yavneh Day School to provide a successful after-school program inside Club J. The afterschool program averaged 37 participants per day, which allowed for growth in participation in after-school classes. We also
brought six teenage athletes to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in summer 2015 to compete at the JCC Maccabi Games.
Older Adults
This year we drew on the talent in our local community with lectures and concerts from local organizations and from
talented APJCC members. We partnered with Foothill College to offer free lip reading classes, and continued our
partnership with Mission College to offer music appreciation and art history. A grant from Jewish Federation allowed us
to offer a monthly Jewish Composers and Lyricists series that brought back memories of music from our seniors’ pasts.
Day trips this year included two theater trips. We also started bringing in local Israeli bar/bat mitzvah families and also the
Yiddish Choristers to our Holocaust Survivors monthly brunches. These are just a few of the many activities we offered for
our seniors this year.
Jewish Life
Holiday celebrations this year included our first annual community Hanukkah event at the Children’s Discovery Museum
of San Jose, the observance of the mitzvah of matanot le’evyonim (giving to those in need) at Sacred Heart Community
Services during Purim, and collaboration with local synagogues to present a tikkun leyl Shavu’ot, a dusk to dawn marathon
of text study for Shavu’ot. Approximately 700 people participated in more than 40 learning and cultural participation
sessions at this year’s Jewbilee, the APJCC’s annual celebration of the diversity of Jewish learning. Our ongoing learning
classes provided a variety of study experiences; one highlight was the Rambam Roundtable group’s completion of its
multi-year reading and discussion of Maimonides’ Guide for the Perplexed.
Cultural Arts
Programs this year included the annual Silicon Valley Jewish Music Festival and South Bay Teen Idol. Theatre Chevruta
completed its third season, culminating in a powerful presentation of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” We continued to partner
with the Los Gatos Art Association, San Jose Opera Guild, and the San Jose Youth Symphony, hosting some of their
events at the APJCC. Exhibitions this year included Laurie Wohl’s “Birds of Longing: Exile and Memory,” a collection of
“interweavings” of Jewish, Muslim and Christian primary texts, accompanied by an interfaith panel of local faith leaders
responding to Wohl’s work.
Sports and Wellness
Our swim lesson program saw an 87% increase in lessons, both private and group. Swim team is at an all-time high in
participation and continues to see steady growth. We have added an additional assistant during some of the prime swim
workouts. Fitness consultations doubled the number of members served over last year, with a 63% decrease in the noshow rate. Both personal training and massage continue steady but did not show any relevant growth over the previous
year. PE programs expanded to include both preschool and middle school students. Top Flight Elite continues to be a solid
partner in our basketball program. Soccer expanded its programming to include a larger Mini Academy for 18 months-4
year olds. Due to increased enrollment, Dance added an Assistant Director, which allowed for expanded programs.
Hospitality
The APJCC continues to be a popular location for civic and community events. In addition to hosting many bar and bat
mitzvah celebrations, wedding receptions, meetings, and quinceaneras this year, we welcomed back several local schools
and a few new ones for their annual fundraising events. We have also become a popular location for vocal and dance
recitals. Fundraising
We experienced our third year in a row of record-breaking, broad-based community support for the annual APJCC Mitzvah
Project. 658 individuals and 77 businesses, foundations, and other organizations made donations, including 148 individuals
who made Circle of Friends levels of gifts of $1,000 or more. The annual gala raised $154,000. Total raised during the year
for the APJCC’s community-strengthening programs was $971,000, with zero going toward administration, overhead,
or personal fitness operating expenses. Tribute and program-designated gifts played a large role in the record-breaking
results.
