You’ve come to the right place. This volume, an annual publication by the American Camp Association, New England, will help guide you through the process of searching for a great summer camp for your child or your family. New England is the birthplace of summer camp. The camping movement began here more than a century ago. Several New England summer camps have already reached their 100th birthdays. In 2010, the American Camp Association celebrated its centennial, and in 2011, the camping movement will reach a significant milestone as it celebrates its 150th anniversary. New England’s summer camps continue to thrive. Today, there are more summer camps and more camp professionals in New England than in any other region. Nearly 400 ACA-accredited summer camps are nestled among the lakes, forests, beaches, and mountains of CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, and VT. There are even a few camps outside the region that are accredited through ACA New England. The ACA-accredited camp logo is the most important logo a summer camp can show. ACA accreditation involves a voluntary review of up to 300 national standards for health and safety, which are considered the best practices of the profession. The ACA administers the only accreditation process for all types of summer camps. ACA accreditation means that your child’s camp cares enough to undergo a thorough review of its operation, from staff training and screening to emergency management. The American Camp Association collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth service agencies to ensure that current practices at your child’s camp reflect the most up-to-date, research-based standards in camp operation. Camps and ACA form a partnership that promotes growth and fun in an environment committed to safety. We encourage you to choose an ACA-accredited camp in New England! In these pages, we’ll tell you a bit about what to consider, what to expect, and what to ask during your search. We’ll tell you how summer camp experiences change lives in big and small ways. The bulk of this guide is made up of a directory of ACA-accredited camps in New England. If you are looking for a specific one, the index will help. In addition to using this guide, you might also want to visit our website, www.acanewengland.org, which features all kinds of information and articles—much too much to include in these 42 pages! Enter important criteria into our online Find-ACamp tool for customized results. Find an upcoming camp fair or open house using our online calendar. ACA-accredited camps in New England offer a huge range of activities, opportunities, and settings. Summer camp experiences provide: o o o o o Healthy, developmentally-appropriate activities and learning experiences Discovery through experiential education Caring, competent role models Service to the community and the environment Opportunities for leadership and personal growth Beyond these important benefits, your child has much to gain from time spent at summer camp: independence and resilience; new skills, experiences, and friends; advancement of current skills—in sports or on a musical instrument, for example; and time in the out-of-doors—an “unplugged” experience away from video games, television, and Facebook. What Is Camp? Summer camp is not just like what you’ve seen in the movies. (In fact, it’s probably not at all like what you’ve seen in the movies.) “Camp” is defined differently by groups ranging from regulatory bodies to parents and guardians to campers themselves. ACA New England sees summer camps as a sustained experience which provides a creative, recreational, and educational group living opportunity in the out-ofdoors. Trained leaders and a natural setting both contribute to each camper’s mental, physical, social, and spiritual growth. Camp is where children can try new things without fear of being laughed at, where they can learn independence and responsibility, where they can build resilience, where they can play and learn among children from all over the country and world and from all backgrounds and experiences, and where they can enjoy both unstructured and unscheduled time. What Types of Camps Are There? Which kind of camp would best suit the needs and interests of your child? Consider the possibilities: Day Camps typically serve children ages 3-15. Session lengths typically vary from one to eight weeks. Some camps offer up to ten weeks of programming. Before camp and after camp programs are offered for an additional fee at some day camps. Overnight, Resident, or Sleepaway Camps usually serve children ages 6-17. Campers sleep at camp for one to eight weeks, depending on the camp’s session length. Back to Table of Contents Back to Key General Camps offer a broad range of activities. Many provide campers with the opportunity to focus on one or a few areas while encouraging them to try a variety of others. It is sometimes possible to explore an activity or interest in depth within the context of the whole program. Trip & Travel Camps involve outdoor exploration through active sports like biking, hiking, climbing and canoeing. Campers spend most of their time traveling and preparing to travel. Specialty Camps are based in day or resident settings. Popular options for specialization may include horseback riding, the arts, sports, computers, or travel. Programming revolves around intensive exposure to the specialty area. Camps for Special Populations serve specific clientele like children or adults with particular medical conditions, disabilities, or special needs. Some camps focus on campers who share very specific diagnoses, while others are geared to meet a broader array of needs at any one time. Religiously-Affiliated Camps offer religious education formally and informally. Review materials carefully for explanations of how religion influences a camp’s culture to find one with the balance that best matches your family’s own values and beliefs. Family Camp Sessions include family members of all ages from grandparents to infants. Accommodations vary, as do program options and session length. The focus is on being together as a family—to learn, to relax, and to enjoy new experiences and adventures. Your online source for New England summer camps: www.ACANewEngland.org Back to Table of Contents Back to Key How Do I Choose the Right Camp? The best summer camp experiences begin with finding the right match between a child’s needs and interests and a camp’s philosophy and program. No two children are the same; no two camps are exactly alike, either—even ones with similar activities, approach, and appearance. ACA New England suggests the following five steps to help you make the most well-informed decision: 1. Start Early! Ideally, begin your camp search the summer before your child will attend camp. This provides the time to tour camps, see them in action, and meet camp directors and other staff. Even if you cannot attend an Open House or tour all camps being considered, there are plenty of ways to explore whether your child will thrive there. 2. Choose an ACA-Accredited Summer Camp. Camps are unique worlds unto themselves, created especially for children and full of fun and learning. ACA accreditation is excellent evidence that a camp is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment. Look for the ACA-accredited camp logo on a camp’s website, in their literature or displayed on a sign posted at camp; this is the most important logo a summer camp can show. 3. Consider and List Camp Expectations. What does the ideal camp experience include for you and for your child? (Consult the sidebar on the next page for more specific questions to think about, given your specific parameters and requirements.) List your expectations and the camper’s. Parents, guardians and children themselves are the experts on what’s needed to round out the school year. Relatives, coaches and counselors can often offer additional assistance and perspective. 4. Use All the Resources Available to You: • Search Online. Explore ACA-accredited camp options with ACA’s Find A Camp tool through our website, www. ACANewEngland.org. Click through to camp websites from the results page. Many camp marketing materials are easy to review online; others are easily requested. Look carefully at the ways camps present themselves online and in print. Online directories are not comprehensive. Camps often have to pay to be listed. Search several directories and compare results. When you find information from indirect sources, carefully consider the source. • Attend camp fairs. Meet camp directors and staff face-to-face to learn what a camp has to offer. Camp fairs are often held in the winter and early spring; more detailed camp fair tips are available at www.campfairs.org. Find a calendar of public events, including camp fairs, on our new website, www.ACANewEngland.org. • Ask trusted friends and family. Relatives, friends, coaches, and guidance counselors may have suggestions of camps that might work well for your child. Keep in mind, however, that just because someone else had a great experience at a camp doesn’t automatically make that camp a good match for your own child. Back to Table of Contents Back to Key • Consult professionals. There are a variety of camp consultants and referral agents who can help point you to camps they represent. Keep in mind that each agent markets a specific group of camps. They will receive a commission paid by the camp if your child enrolls at a camp they’ve referred. • ACA New England and ACA National are standing by. Contact us by calling (781) 541-6080 or by visiting either www.ACANewEngland.org or www.campparents.org. Make a Final Decision. Once you’ve narrowed the list down to its finalists, take the steps to make a decision. Involve the prospective camper as much as possible in the decision-making process so that (s)he will look forward to camp. Tour camps when they are in session or attend an open house. Speak with camp directors and representatives. Request the names of parent references and speak with people in your community. This research will position you, as the world’s foremost expert on your child, to make the final choice. Go with your gut. There is no such thing as the best camp, only the best camp for your child. And, once you’ve selected a camp, send in your registration materials early to avoid being waitlisted. 5. Key Questions to Consider When Listing Preferences What’s driving your camp search? Unparalled fun and learning? The opportunity for new experiences? To develop new skills? Family tradition? The need for child care? What are your leading camp search criteria? Which are non-negotiable and which are preferences? For example, does a camp have to be single-sex, offer four week sessions, or be located in a particular area? What specific activities and programs might interest your child? What level of intensity are you looking for? Are you looking for opportunities to try new activities, to play, to advance current skills, to practice, to compete, or to specialize? What educational philosophy will best match your child’s temperament? What values are important to you in terms of how the camp runs its program and trains its staff? Do you want a camp that emphasizes structure and responsibility? One that emphasizes free play and choice? How do the camps you are considering build community and encourage independence? What kind of facilities will your camper consider? Discuss camp “architecture” (tents, cabins, bunks, yurts, tepees, shelters) dining, electricity, and bathrooms. What session length (from a few days up to 8 weeks, often with plenty of options in between) is comfortable for you, for your child and for your family’s summer schedule? Remaining flexible about session length can considerably increase your options. What clientele should the camp focus on? There are camps for boys only, girls only, coed, brother/sister, religious groups, under-served populations and children with special needs. What is your budget for camp tuition? Camp remains an affordable option for most everyone. Some camps offer financial assistance. Financial aid procedures vary from camp to camp, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. Read camps’ brochures and websites carefully for information and application instructions, too. Back to Table of Contents Back to Key We Chose a Camp—Now What? Prepare for camp together. This should help ensure a successful experience for all involved. You can help your child ‘build up’ to camp by taking some of the following steps: Encourage day and resident campers alike to practice caring for their own belongings and for their own bodies. First time resident campers should practice being away from home by spending overnights or weekends with friends or family. Discuss strategies for coping with homesickness. Make sure your child knows that it’s a perfectly normal feeling. Do not overpack for camp. Adhere as closely as possible to the packing list provided by the camp. The camp knows what your child will use and need; packing too much can overwhelm a camper and lead to lost or damaged items. Find out and follow the preferred method to use when communicating with your child at camp. Send a letter or postcard a week ahead of time so that is there for the first mail delivery. If you drop off your child at camp, follow the directions and wishes of the counselors. Camp staff are trained and prepared to help your child to adjust to camp. Say your goodbyes swiftly and with confidence in your child and in the camp you’ve chosen! Back to Table of Contents Back to Key How to Read a Listing Here’s what a typical entry in our directory looks like: Camp Name Location A 100-character blurb, supplied by the camp, that describes something about its program or setting. GENDER; SESSION LENGTHS; AGES Year Round (YR), Summer (S), and/ or Winter (W) Phone Numbers Website A Note on Alphabetizing If you know the name of the camp you’re looking for, you’ll be able to find it by searching for the camp’s name without the word ‘camp’ or any of its other affiliations. For instance, YMCA Camp Funtimes is alphabetized under ‘F,’ and Camp Safety is under ‘S.’ We hope this makes things easier. He sometimes has difficulty making friends because he is a bit shy at first. I asked him why it was easier at camp and he said that at camp, unlike school, the adults expect campers to treat each other with respect, to be friendly to all, and to look out for each other.” --Anonymous, parent “As a chef at an overnight camp my focus is on preparing healthy, nutritious, meals that the kids and staff will enjoy. Our counselors serve the meals family style and encourage the campers to try everything we prepare, so my meal planning has to go beyond basic nutritional concerns and give our campers a chance to expand their palates. We try to balance between foods the kids already enjoy and things that might be new to them or that they aren’t yet in the habit of eating. Well prepared, nutritious, food will help kids form better eating habits, especially away from the soda and snacks readily available at home.” --Tom, chef “I spend my school year teaching at a boarding school. And I can honestly say that at resident camp we get to know many kids more meaningfully in a couple of weeks than I can in an entire school year. It puts us in a really unique position to help young people shape their lives in a positive direction.” --Todd, counselor “Charlie and Will learned archery, earned ribbons in tennis, beaded earrings, loathed and loved swimming, made friends, and turned golden brown. They returned home each day exhausted, proud, and happy…and it seemed to me a bit older – confident and sure. My deepest thanks for giving these two little guys a great experience.” --Jeanne, parent Look for the Logo! They are making s’mores around a campfire and shrieking at scary stories. It looks like they are having too much fun to be learning anything of importance, right? It sounds like they are being goofy, not growing up, right? This is where many adults seem to get it wrong. Not only is camp an important developmental tool for children at a time in their lives that brings about a great deal of change, but it is such for children from every walk of life. “Camp is an equal opportunity life changer,” says Peg Smith, CEO of the American Camp Association. “It addresses universal childhood needs not specific to a particular racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic group. Nobody is left out.” The summer camp experience can play an integral role in every child’s overall development. Regardless of where a child comes from, the benefits of camp can be great. Some are from underserved families and are struggling with problems at home. Some are from wealthy and prominent families and may be identified only as the children of their parents. Others are living with life-threatening illnesses and injuries or grieving immeasurable losses. And some are living a “typical” childhood. It is easy to see how one might be skeptical that these kids from such different backgrounds and situations could stand to benefit from the same experience, but each and every one of them can grow into themselves in a camp environment. Camp provides the perfect environment for a child to learn and practice individual and group decision making. They discover how to socialize and navigate their interactions with others, and to resolve conflicts peacefully. Critical-thinking and leadership skills are developed, not only through modeling their behavior off of great camp directors and counselors, but through the opportunity to be leaders themselves within the camp community. “Song leader, lunch table leader, team captain, the list goes on and on,” says Smith. Parents may worry that, over the summer, their children will begin to forget the things they learned in school. Studies show that students on summer vacation can lose up to three months of what they have learned during the school year. However, camp provides programming that keeps a child’s brain active, alert, and acquiring knowledge Back to Table of Contents and skills, which reduces learning loss. And it is not only a child’s brain that is kept active at summer camp; they keep their bodies active as well. Exercise is simply part of the fun of the day at camp. Programming such as hiking, soccer, and canoeing allow children to truly enjoy being active on a daily basis. Between exercise and exposure to nature, which is proven to reduce stress, improve mood, and stimulate all of a child’s senses, children return home mentally and physically well, perhaps more so than upon their arrival at camp. During a summer at camp, a child begins to understand what it means to be part of a community. Living in a group setting and sharing team experiences teaches kids how to work together, care for each other, and find their voice within the group. Camp is a safe place away from home, and having a strong and supportive community around encourages a child to engage in positive risk-taking. Children realize that they are in a judgmentfree environment and begin to step out of their own comfort zone, taking both physical and emotional risks they may never otherwise take. They ask questions, try new things, and become active participants in their own lives. All of these new encounters become the driving force behind burgeoning self-confidence, selfsufficiency, and self-reliance. Suddenly, children are discovering skills and strengths they never knew they possessed and are getting their first taste of success and achievement. Adults know very well the feeling of confidence that arises from accomplishing something. It is important to remember that many children are experiencing this sense of accomplishment on their own for the very first time at camp, something that may not have happened at home or school. These benefits are vital to a child’s development, but if you ask anyone who has ever attended summer camp what it is they value most about the experience, they would likely say the relationships they developed and the memories they still carry with them are most important. Camp gives kids the opportunity to meet other campers and counselors who are different from them, and they come away from the summer with lasting relationships with people they never would have met otherwise. Long after summer ends, the memories of the silly songs, funny games, achievements and friendships live on in children’s hearts and minds. Camp is an excellent opportunity for fostering growth in any child. The values and shared experiences of camp overshadow any labels a camper might feel they carry with them from the “outside world.” Details like where they are from and what they own fade away, allowing them the chance to evolve into themselves. Camps create communities that value everyone equally, and there is a camp out there for everyone! Back to Key Back to Table of Contents Back to Key
