The international stance and central role that the show has assumed over the years testifies to the will to look to the future, to take on new challenges and to focus on ever new goals. Cersaie is An international now also becoming a vital show in terms of appointment for visitors, professionals working on large projects in the urban, exhibitors and office and commercial professionals segments as ceramic tiles are increasingly used for major works such as ventilated facades, public buildings and squares, shops and offices, as well as the customary interior and exterior residential applications. This 88522 preference clearly emerges in the poster created for the next Cersaie. The image – abstract with indistinct edges and a rigorous proportion – depicts a rectangle divided according to the golden proportion, an evident expression of the importance of geometry and the laws of mathematics as the foundations of architectural structures. The principle of universal harmony or “golden proportion” (the ratio whereby the sum of two parts of a segment is to the larger part as the larger part is to the smaller part) lends balance and perfection to any composition. Recognised by the ancients as a tool for unifying multiplicity and harmonising discordance, even today the golden section – as demonstrated by Citterio in his representation – is used “to express the complete internal cohesion of shape”. This sense of proportion and perfection are the hallmarks of Cersaie, where each year over 1,000 exhibitors from more than 30 countries display the very best of world production in the field of ceramic tiles and bathroom furniture. The event is attended by about 90,000 visitors, including 30% from abroad, a figure unmatched by any other international tradeshow. Another outstanding figure is that of accredited journalists: last year there were 580, including 259 from abroad. Cersaie, to be held from 26 to 30 September 2006 in Bologna, is a crucial appointment for professionals in the fields of architecture, interior design, real estate, distribution and installation, as well as members of the public with an appreciation for elegance and sophistication. ∏ 8 CER MAGAZINE INTERNATIONAL N.17 Spring/Summer 2006 Exhibition/2 Coverings, Italian style and quality on display More than 90 Italian ceramic manufacturers are taking part in the pre-eminent tradeshow in the Americas by Augusta Borelli An international press conference to outline the sector’s strategies The 17th Coverings, the pre-eminent American exhibition of ceramic tiles and natural stone due to be held in the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando from 4 to 7 April, will be hosting more than 1,000 exhibitors in a floor space of 100,000 square metres. The inaugural session, sponsored by Ceramic Tiles of Italy, will include addresses by architects Ron Jones and Sara Gutterman on the concept of green building, Arturo Mastelli on the increasingly frequent use of ceramic tiles for cladding vertical walls, and Donato Grosser, the Association’s consultant for the US market, on “The future of U.S. ceramic tile distribution: what can we predict” on Wednesday 5 April at 9.00 a.m. ∏ Panariagroup has announced an acquisition in the United States: at the end of February the Italian ceramic company acquired the fundamental assets of Florida Tile from the Milestone Capital Fund for 22.5 million dollars. These assets comprise the facility in Lawrenceburg, KY, the leased factory in Shannon, GA, the brand name, finished product warehouse and logistics center at Lawrenceburg, and the distribution chain of 26 stores in the eastern United States. “We have invested in one of the fastest-growing markets. The investment plan offers numerous synergies and opportunities for development with our group,” explains Giuliano Mussini. In the short term we will partially substitute and supplement products currently sold by Florida Tile with others manufactured at our factories. Over the next two years, we also plan to refurbish and extend at least one of the two North American factories.” Following this acquisition, Panariagroup now has 7 factories, 7 brand names and about 1,900 employees. MARAZZI LISTED IN MILAN After receiving the go-ahead from Borsa Italiana, on 15 February Marazzi Ceramiche began official listing of its securities on the Milan Stock Exchange. According to Marazzi Group managing director Michele Preda, stock market listing will allow the company to plan two new acquisitions, in China and in the United States, with the objective of acquiring a controlling interest in two companies in the sector with excellent production and sales capability. The company has set its price at €10.25 per share, a figure which has allowed it to bring in €326.4 million, including exercise of the Greenshoe option. Demand for the shares, which was 1.7 times the offer, met the allotment for both institutional investors (the shareholder structure now includes major US, English, and French investment funds) and for the general public. At 30 September 2005, the company’s turnover had reached €677.2 million, up 18%; EBITDA was €125.9 million, up 51.3%, while its net profit for the period stood at €43.1 million. After placement of the offering, the Marazzi family maintained a controlling interest in the company, holding over 60% of capital, with a circulating of around 30%. “PERCORSI IN CERAMICA”, FROM CASALGRANDE PADANA The latest issue of the Casalgrande Padana magazine takes on the challenge of proposing increasingly complex solutions for special design requests. The company’s research centre has developed a series of innovative products and cutting-edge technical solutions for floor and wall coverings, looking for answers that meet the demands of contemporary architecture. The magazine explores these topics by presenting exemplary ideas for facade systems, raised flooring, industrial flooring, and the removal of architectural barriers. Each topic is presented by illustrating specific technologies and products that have been fine-tuned to optimize the available options. SPECIAL MOSAIC RECOGNITION: RENE GONZALEZ ARCHITECT, INC This year, the jury awarded a special recognition to Rene Gonzalez Architect for their stunning design of the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation in Miami, Florida. Using over 1 million Bisazza tiles, the firm created a 125’x35’ image of a jungle on the façade of the building. Rene Gonzalez Architect designed the image then Bisazza used their software to match each individual color pixel from the design to one of their 20x20mm tiles. One hundred and seven colors from 3 different series: Le Gemme, Smalto and Vetricolor. Bisazza donated over one million tiles and devised a new exterior paneling system to bring the project to life. The façade was produced by hand in 12”x12” sections which were then applied and grouted onto 4’x4’ aluminum panels. The panels were then anchored to an aluminum structure attached to the exterior of the warehouse. According to the firm’s principal, Rene Gonzalez, “The design of the façade is a contradiction to the expected white and concrete clad exteriors of most art institutions. The gallery space and garden below are meant to foster exchanges between the Miami and global art community.” ∏ RENE GONZALEZ ARCHITECT, INC Project: Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFA) Tiles: Bisazza Distributor/Contractor: Bisazza Wayne Tile selected for 2006 Assopiastrelle American Distributor Award After an extensive selection process… Wayne Tile has been named this year’s recipient of the Assopiastrelle American Distributor Award. In its 16th year, this prestigious award recognizes leading American distributors for their dedication to the promotion and use of Italian ceramic tiles in the North American marketplace. Wayne Tile was a stand out in each of the rigorous standards set by the Italian ceramic tile industry. Established in 1950, Wayne Tile, like many other tile companies, had its very humble beginnings in the tile installation business. A family-owned and operated business, led by brothers Robert, Harry and Donald Westra, Wayne Tile opened their first showroom in Wayne, New Jersey in the late 1950s and quickly established itself as one of the largest tile contractors in the state. During the 1960s, as the business continued to flourish, the brothers ended the tile installation business and focused their efforts on retail and wholesale to builders and contractors. A second showroom was opened in Sussex County, New Jersey in 1974 and a third in 1987 in Rockaway, New Jersey. With the opening of these two spaces, the emphasis shifted to importing tiles, primarily from Italy. This focus has continued to the present day as the company currently carries a num- ber of Italian tile manufacturers including: Panaria, Magica, Vallelunga, Emilceramica, Sant’ Agostino, Castelvetro, Tagina, Cerim, Kerex, La Faenza, Casalgrande Padana and Fondovalle. “In the past two years, there has been a dramatic shift in our purchases with most of our Italian purchases growing substantially, and our Spanish purchases dropping dramatically. The main reason for our increase in purchasing more Italian tiles is simply the superior style and design of Italian tile. Italy has become the premier source for today’s leading styles and most technologically advanced tiles. It should be no surprise that a culture with such a long tradition of artistic expression would product the world’s most fashionable tiles,” said Tim Westra, Sales Manager and part-owner of Wayne Tile. Today Wayne Tile has three showrooms located throughout the state as well as administrative offices, a distribution center and a designer showroom in Wayne, New Jersey. The three founding members can still be found helping out at the various showrooms as well as serving on the board of directors, yet they have passed the torch onto the second generation of Westras to continue servicing the industry. 11 12 CER MAGAZINE INTERNATIONAL N.17 Spring/Summer 2006 Market Growth in US building industry continues in spite of higher interest rates. by Donald Deangelis The 2005 was an extraordinary year for the US real property market, marking the culmination of a period of steady expansion that began in 2000. This growth was driven by numerous factors, including population growth, economic stability and, most of all, low interest rates. Large numbers of families have taken advantage of the favourable situation to remodel their homes or to buy properties, thereby pushing up prices throughout the country, most significantly in New York and California. This in turn has encouraged speculation and further invigorated the market. According to all the analysts, the slowdown that began in the last four months of 2005 marks a natural return to normality after a fiveyear period characterised by extremely rapid growth in both volume and prices. In 2005 construction expenditure in the United States exceeded $1,146 billion, 7.8% more than the $1,063 billion in the previous year. The private construction accounted remained stable in the other for $892 billion, a 7.8% increase regions: +0,6% in the West and no over 2004 and public construction change in the Mid-West. Growth was Although 2005 was a positive year higher in the southern states for residential building and for the (10.1%) and in the Northeast construction industry in general, (9.4%), while levels of construction the last four months of the year showed clear signs of a slowdown. In November, new house purchasEffective mortgage rate and the ten-year treasury yeld es dropped by 11.3% and the average price of a house fell to $216,000 compared to $225,000 in October (-4.1%). The drop in demand for new housing was particularly evident in the West, where the largest fall in the past ten years was recorded in November, -22.1%. There was a decrease of 18.3% in the Midwest and 5.5% in the South, whereas the Northeast showed 13.4% growth. There are a number of factors behind this trend, including the increase in interest rates by the Federal Reserve Bank; the rise in home building costs, partly due to higher fuel costs; the higher cost of CER MAGAZINE INTERNATIONAL N.17 Spring/Summer 2006 13 ››news continued from page 9 » ceramics concept, creating a design that Cerdomus turned into reality through an innovative production system and unique pressing technique. NEW BISAZZA SINGLE-BRAND SHOWROOM IN MILAN CERAMICA DEL CONCA MEETS WITH ARCHITECTS land, building materials (6.1% on average in 2005) and labour, due to the lack of specialist workers and lower unemployment rates. In spite of all these factors, the forecasts for 2006 are far from alarming and most sector experts expect to see only a small slowdown with respect to 2005. David Lereah, chief economist at the National Association of Realtors, predicts sales of 6.8 million existing residential buildings in 2006, down 4.4% from the 7.1 million of 2005, and a 6% fall in new home sales over 2005. The NAR leadership does not appear overly alarmed by these forecasts, stressing that the slowdown is simply a return to normality after an exceptional year. David Seiders from the National Association of Home Builders predicts that the number of housing starts will fall by 6-7% in 2006 compared to 2005. Seiders sees little likelihood of the speculative bubble bursting and believes that the property market is simply cooling off after becoming incandescent in recent years. This optimism is shared by the numerous industry professionals interviewed by the Wall Street Journal in mid January, who believe that the residential building market, buoyed by the steady population growth, will remain profitable in 2006. Although interest rates have risen in recent months, they are still at relatively low. With regard to building material, the analysis of the National Association of Home Builders predicts an overall 56% increase, slightly lower than that of 2005. The remodelling market also saw considerable growth in 2005, slackening only during the last few months of the year. According to figures from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, Americans spent almost $150 billion on remodelling their homes in 2005 (4.3% more than in 2004, a year that saw an extraordinary 20% growth over 2003). However, remodelling expenditures were lower in November than in October (-4.1%). Another market linked to remodelling is that of retail sales of building materials and garden equipment. According to Department of Commerce figures, retail sales of these products totalled $332.6 billion in 2005. In December, this sector suffered a 0.6% downturn, whereas the year as a whole saw 9.7% growth over 2004. Although many remodelling market professionals consider it unlikely that the growth figures of 2005 can be sustained in 2006, the outlook for the new year is definitely positive for this sector. ∏ Mr. Mularoni at the meeting Last November, Del Conca hosted a workshop dedicated to “New Uses for Ceramics”, in collaboration with the Council of Architects, Planners, Landscape Designers, and Conservationists of the Province of Rimini. The event was another example of the company’s focus on creating an ever-stronger synergy with the world of architects and designers, even in experimental stages of work. The talk by Ceramica Del Conca managing director Enzo Mularoni emphasized the link between the two spheres, pointing to the company’s participation in the development of new products, like the tile used to pave Piazza Italia in the Japanese city of Kobe, and its “solar tile”, a prototype that won the “Exercises in Architecture-Cumulus” competition. CAESAR AT THE SAN DIEGO AIRPORT Ceramiche Caesar has supplied approximately 16,000 m2 of Tecnolito for the construction of the San Diego Regional Airport. Caesar’s Tecnolito series was chosen to replace the original limestone with a technical product that resembles stone. Tecnolito Gold was chosen for this order, sized 45x45 cm and cut in various shapes. Last December, Bisazza inaugurated a new space in Milan at no. 2, Via Senato as part of a brand development plan that foresees a chain of single-brand showrooms in major international cities. After Milan, Berlin, New York, and London will come Paris, where a singlebrand showroom will be built in spring of this year. The design, overseen by Bisazza Design Studio under the direction of Carlo Dal Bianco, is for a series of living areas covered in mosaic decorations which will vary with the presentation of new collections - and is rounded out by furnishings and design objects that help define the personal, exclusive style of Bisazza. CERAMICA FIORANESE AT MACEF 2006 Ceramica Fioranese was in attendance at Macef 2006, the international trade show for the home, for years a meeting place for designers, decorators, architects, and journalists. The fair, which was held at the new Milan expo centre from 20 to 23 January, saw Ceramica Fioranese’s participation in two major events: Getti&Oggetti and Materie. Designer Silvia Stanzani, the mind behind the Ceramica Fioranese Patterns of ColorLab project, chose to participate in the Getti&Oggetti event, using ColorLab to decorate one of the bathrooms in the “Houdini, il bagno trasformista” (“Houdini, the quick-change bathroom”) international competition. Steelwork, on the other hand, was selected for another section of the exhibition: the botanical greenhouse of Materie. With Steelwork, Ceramica Fioranese has once again shown its flair for research and innovation, presenting a product with a completely novel metallic surface, very similar to steel, obtained using cutting-edge manufacturing processes that stem from the constant research which fuels the company’s operations. » 14 CER MAGAZINE INTERNATIONAL N.17 Spring/Summer 2006 ››news continued from page 13 » THE “ALADDIN’S LAMP” OF MARCA CORONA As part of its new Alchimie collection, Marca Corona has introduced the concept of a lighting system built into the ceramics, offering customers yet another tool (in addition to the original Alchimie floor and wall covering system) to help highlight special interior architecture. The solution is Alchimie Sculpture, a lamp with a “crater” shape, almost a layer that peels away from the wall with light emerging from it, made of the same ceramic material and in the same colours of the collection by the same name. ABK GROUP BUCKS THE TREND IN 2005 The Finale Emilia ceramics group that includes the brands ABK, Ariana, and Valverde closed out 2005 with an increase in exports and turnover, reporting over 90 million in net revenue, up 14% over 2004. The group has been growing steadily since 1996, acquiring historic brands and working to give them an aggressive new approach to sales, employing tools such as research, innovation, and personnel training. CASAMOOD IN HANNOVER Casa Dolce Casa presented Casamood at Contract World in Hanover. The Casamood stand was completely dedicated to the interior architectural designs created by seven architects during a workshop entitled “The Seven Deadly Sins”. Each participant was invited to develop the theme of one of the seven deadly sins, associating each with one of the colours in the Neutra collection. The participating architects came from all around the world: Beda Faessler (Riken Yamamoto & Beda Faassler, Japan), Marcin Orawiec (OX2 Architekten, Germany), Hannes Pfau (UN Studio, the Netherlands), Piergiorgio Robino (Nucleus, Italy), Steve Schappacher (Schappacher White, USA), Jordi Torres (Torres & Torres, Spain), Much Untertrifaller (Dietrich Untertrifaller Architekten, Austria). EMAS CERTIFICATION FOR LEA Finale Emilia-based company is exploring the world of colour, offering tiles as way to create a harmonious environment that nurtures the body and the spirit. Blending Ceramiche Lea’s distinctive research with the creativity of Diego Grandi, Studies embodies an evolution of ceramic material, the creative arena for experimentation with new combinations of materials. In Studies the more matt nature of Midtown porcelain tile meets a luminous glass powder, creating a texture which emerges from the ceramic body with the energy of colour and the dynamic effects of light. The Studies Stonehenge version features grittier geometries and shapes, in which bright, rigorous lines run through the ceramic body, intersecting to create sharp edges that contrast with the matt nature of the ceramic body. The sanding processes, the precision of the wire cuts and a capacity to mix together different bodies are just a few of the characteristics of this new project, which demonstrates Lea Ceramiche’s technological capability and desire to experiment and constantly renew itself. Studies is the latest project in a product development strategy that the company has been pursuing for the last few years. Progetto L14, for example, has been a major innovation for Lea Ceramiche, a wall tile that is not just a surface covering but a genuine furnishing accessory with its combination of form and colour, animated surfaces and plays of light, creating a heterogeneous and constantly evolving new language.
