InternationalChildren'sDayofBroadcasting(ICDB),takingplace

In1991UNICEFchallengedthemediaandbroadcastindustrytodo
moreforkids.WiththehelpofTheInternationalCouncilofThe
NationalAcademyofTelevisionArtsandSciences(NATAS),theDay
waslaunchedandbroadcasterseagerlytookupthechallenge.
In1992,200broadcastersinalittleover80countriestookpartin
thefirstInternationalChildren'sDayofBroadcasting.In1993,824
stationsin112countriesparticipated,thenumberscontinuedto
growandinDecember1995morethen2,000broadcastersfrom
over170countriestookpart.
Thehugeincreaseinparticipantsisonlypartofthestory.TheDay
hasprovidedgovernments,broadcasters,communitiesandchildren
themselveswithapowerfulopportunitytocreatenotonlyabetter
broadcastenvironmentbutalsoabetterworldforyoungpeople.
GovernmentsinmanycountrieshaveembracedtheDay,usingitfor
acatalystforactiononbehalfofchildren.Broadcasterinvolvement
goesfarbeyondthemereallocationofanhourortwoof
programmingandchildrenplayastrongerroleeachyear,notonly
expressingtheirownconcerns,butalsousingthepowerof
broadcastingtohelpthoseamongthemwhoareespecially
vulnerable.
TheInternationalChildren'sDayofBroadcastingisnowoneof
UNICEF'smostsuccessfuladvocacyinitiatives.Ithasthesupportof
someoftheworld'smostpowerfulandinfluentialbroadcasting
organizationsandbroadcastersfromallovertheworldnowannually
