united in Soul to bring up the Funk to your dancefloor
Funk, soul and jazz is the music created for dance floors and lays beneath all modern dance music.
Yet it is not very popular among the DJs in its pure form and you can not very often hear it in a club.
Poland is not different from the rest of the world – usually house and techno predominated. Too
many pulp DJs following fashions and much too less real music in the clubs. So it was very lucky that
five of the most funkiest and musically enhanced polish DJs met to create a very special collective to
promote good vibes to clubs of Poland. They were already on the Poland’s club scene for almost ten
years, doing parties on their own. So it was very natural to unite and under the name of Soul Service
promote good groove to the clubs.
From funk to hip-hop from jazz to latin soul from 7”digging to scratching. They cover it all. Adding
some visuals and sometimes funky MCs they know how to party. Soul Service is talking loud and
saying “get on the good foot” with our funk bomb.
In search for more funky tunes Soul Service turned to dig their secret stash – old polish record crates.
For years they were looking through second hand shops, flea markets and granny’s wardrobes to find
any polish record influenced by funk. Soul Service wanted to expose power of their homeland beats
to the rest of world. This way “Polish Funk” compilation concept was born and was brought to the
world with cooperation of the Polish oldest record label still on the market – Polskie Nagrania.
“Polish Funk” series really hit the spot responding to the strong need of such a record among wide
audience. It was named the record of the week by “Piccadilly Records” from London, “Dusty
Grooves” from Chicago called it “a wonderful introduction to the kinds of grooves we've been digging
from Poland for years” and „Jazzman Records” UK calls it “an album espousing the strength and
diversity of funky jazz recorded behind the Iron Curtain in '70s Poland”. “Polish Funk” was also
acclaimed very warmly by polish artists whose compositions appeared on it. Ewa Bem, a super
famous polish jazz singer, calls it, interviewed by “Dziennik” - a major polish newspaper, “A superb
record, that gives a chance for a polish music to be introduced to the new dance generation” and
Halina Frąckowiak a very popular polish pop singer calls “Polish Funk” “A record compiled by well
known polish DJs with excellent selection of most valuable polish funk/soul tracks. Recommended for
all - not only funk lovers”
“Polish funk vol. 1” was issued on July 2007 and 7” single followed on September 2007 with two
additional tracks. Then later that year“Polish Funk vol. 2” was issued. Also a promotional mix tape
that contains tracks from vol. 1 and 2 is already distributed. From that point "Polish Funk vol. 3" was
issued and later also "Polish Funk vol. 4". Soul Service issued also "Why Not Samba" compilation
reviewing polish groove tracks inspired by latin-american music and "Off Season" - jazz groove
compilation. And recently "Strange Weekend" compilation with Polish psychedelic rock.
They rocked the parties in clubs all over World - Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Russia, Belarus, France,
Holland, Litvenia, China, Israel, and UK.
Soul Service DJs are:
Papa Zura – Papa Zura is an DJ from mid 90s. He first performed in Lublin as "Funkadelia Sound
System". At the end of XX century he recorded an album "Looblin Funk" with his band Bloo Zbir.
Record was issued in Cpt. Sparky's record label and this resulted in cooperation of both gentlemen
for this day.
As a DJ Papa Zura performed in many countries, in clubs and on festivals. His favorite style is a
mixture of a music from 60s and 70s from Poland and Eastern Europe. He made couple of his own
music productions including two 7" singles issued by Funky Mamas and Papas label.
In 2005 he together with friend DJs formed Soul Service collective and together they made
compilations for Polskie Nagrania label (Polish Funk series among others). He performs with live
musicians (for example: Tryki with Gerard Lebik and Dominik Trębski) and in turntable duo The
Fathers with Ojciec Karol. From 2009 Papa Zura is also an art manager of Warsaw's club huśtawka.
DJ Misty aka Miściak – Miściak - DJ promoter, collector and lover of vinyl records in business
since late 90s.
Before joining the Soul Service DJ Team he with DJs: Envee, Jealo and Maceo created original
Innocent Sorcerers DJ Collective.
During his long adventure with music he played in good clubs in Poland and on some festivals like
Opener. He also performed abroad in Israel, France, China, Slovenia or UK.
He cooperated with Warsaw's Radio "Radiostacja" and Radio Jazz. His DJ sets are always mixture of
styles from funk, soul , rock, latin , brazil, disco to hip hop
Burn Reynolds – Burn Reynolds started his adventure with music in mid 90s in local sound
systems. He performed as a DJ after a concerts, which mostly also he organized. After next few years
he started more often play DJ parties gaining more experience. He had a radio show "Fusion"
broadcasted by Warsaw "Jazz Radio" where presented many musical genres from soul, reggae, funk
and jazz to disco and rare grooves.
He collaborated with theatrical studio where he was responsible for the music for "Abolutnie Off
Show". With this theatre he performed in Poland and abroad. He also prepared music for Danił
Charms play "Z niebywałej wysokości" in National Theatre.
Burn Reynolds made regular parties in Warsaw in Pruderia club called "Fulkolor" where he invited
Soul Jazz Sound System. He also made regular gigs in Paprotka club in Warsaw called "Brown Sugar".
He collaborated with Wax Box record shop in Warsaw also with EU4YA (European Union For Young
Artist ). And he is part of Soul Service DJ Team.
Cpt. Sparky – At the beginning of 90's Cpt. Sparky under heavy influence of jazz and ethnic music
founded with Paweł Kucharczuk Primitivo music group. With this band he recorded one record in
1998.
In the same year he found Cpt. Sparky Publications - a record label to promote and release
interesting Polish music genres from experimental electronica to ska and funk. After closing this label
in 2000 he starts his career as a DJ and till today he conquers club goers with hot rhythms of funk,
soul, rhythm and blues and jazz from his ever expanding vinyl record collection.
He was an art manager of Warsaw's clubs Organza (2001-2003) and Paprotka (2005-2006) and he
invited many famous DJs from all over the world. He is an author of club music compilations for EMI
and Sony.
In 2005 with other three DJs: Papa Zura, Burn Reynolds and Misty he founded Soul Service - a DJ
team with a mission to promote their favorite music genres: funk and soul in Polish clubs.
Due to their cooperation with Polskie Nagrania label they issue a series of compilations Polish Funk,
Why Not Samba, Off Season and Strange Weekend. He also makes for Polskie Nagrania his own
compilation "We Pay Respekt"
From 2011 he cooperates with dance studio Swing Out and together they make a parties called "Fall
in love with Swing" promoting lindy-hop dance and swing music.
He played in many clubs abroad like: Unique Club (Duseldorf), Zapata (Stuttgart), Depot (Tubingen),
Cafe im Kunstverein (Frankfurt), Graviti (Wilno), Bunker (Minsk), Kraftwerk i Ventil (Szwajcaria), Soul
Club (Tel Aviv), Bass Club (Jerozolima), Jazz Cafe (Londyn), Birdyard (Birmingham), Bohannon (Berlin)
and also in Shanghai
Also from 2012 together with Nevergiveup he begun a weekly psychedelic cinema Oko Proroka (Eye
of the Prophet). With in this project they show every Wednesday in Znajomi Znajomych club
psychedelic B class movies.
Sparky is also a video maker and VJ and author of movies and video clips and he is also a designer an
author of many CD and Vinyl record covers.
Ojciec Karol - Ojciec Karol is a cofounder of Break Da Dunk collective created to support broken
sounds. Break Da Funk organized many parties in Poland with foreign artists as: Ugly Duckling, DJ
Kentaro, Speech Defect, Krafty Kuts, Scratch Perverts, DK, zespół 6ix Toys, Nostalgia 77, DJ Format,
Boca 45, A.Skillz, DJ Hype & Jim Dunloop, Natural Self and Rob Life.
He released "Akumulatura" mixtape which reflected some funk influence on dance music and also he
released "Sepukultura" mixtape with some noble polish club musicians: mC glenSKii - voc, Kuba
Galiński – synth and org, Suhi vel Sushkin – trumpet and voc, dj Zaju – scratch. It was broadcasted on
Ninja Tune show "Solid Steel".
On January 2010 by Funky Mammas & Papas 7" single was released called Break Da Funk "Tajniak".
Ojciec Karol was coauthor of one of the single's tracks.
In 2011 EP was released called "Muppet Revolution". Spike and Ojciec Karol were responsible for the
music but many guest artists were invited. In "Kurator" track Kfiat raps and in "Muppets Revolution"
track you can hear Sean Palmer and also Maciej Kleszczewski, Staszek Wróbel, Tomacki i Pawel
Moszynski.
Ojciec Karol together with Papa Zura creates "The Fathers" DJ duet. With four turntables, two mixers
and effector they play explosive set of heavy funk, soul, reggae, drum'n'bass and breaks.
Ojciec Karol also played scratches with hip-hop band Bassgrou. Also he appeared on some records of
Łąki Łan, Patent, Letko and Marika. He also had his own radio show in Warsaw's "Radio Jazz" were he
invited many guests to perform life sets with instruments.
In 2013 Ojciec Karol joined Soul Service - Polish Funk DJ Team - . It was an occasion to record as
special mixtape with Brazilian funk "Piąte Koło u wozu".
