My father believed the only way to become a boat builder of any worth was to experience every trade from the ground up.” –Tom Derecktor Tom Derecktor Heritage - PASSION FOR BUILDING BOATS Derecktor was founded in 1947 by Bob Derecktor, who was well known for speaking his mind, for caring deeply about the art of yacht design and for perfecting the craft of boat building. Derecktor soon grew from one yard to three: Robert E. Derecktor, Inc., Derecktor of Florida and Derecktor Shipyards Conn., LLC. Although technology has advanced and facilities have greatly expanded, the yard’s passion for boat building still continues with Bob’s sons, Paul and Tom Derecktor. Today Derecktor has delivered over two hundred and fifty vessels; specializing in aluminum, steel and w w w . d e r e c k t o r. c o m composite construction. “ I was especially impressed with the quality of the steel hull for the 85.6 meter motor yacht – I have not seen better metal work.” –Ron Holland Cr aftsmanship Generations of craftsmen, lofters, joiners, metal workers and shipwrights have passed along their skills and experience creating an atmosphere of dedication that is truly rare to find. Even in today’s high tech world, craftsmanship is still the one essential ingredient to creating a superbly finished yacht. Evidence of Derecktor’s uncompromised craftsmanship is noticeable the moment you set foot on one of our two hundred and fifty delivered vessels. w w w . d e r e c k t o r. c o m “ 281 foot Cakewalk new construction I don’t ever start with a template,” says Heywood. “I just think, what is the eye-catching feature of Carinthia VII. It’s the definite, flowing lines and what I term the female forms. Because she’s a gentle, curved – I like to think – exquisite design. So all I have to do in the new design is to bear that in mind; think of flowing lines and sculpted, rounded, organic forms.” –Tim Heywood E xcellence Seeds of the 281ft Cakewalk project under construction at Derecktor can be found in one of Tim Heywood’s earlier designs: the 319ft Carinthia VII. “The owner saw the boat and said to his captain, ‘I think I’d like to talk to the designer of that boat,’” Heywood recalls. “I went to meet with him and I’m pleased to say we got on quite well. The owner hired Heywood to design his new yacht in collaboration with Azure Naval Architects partners Hugo van Wieringen and Diederik van der Hoek, their team in The Netherlands and the American interior designer Liz Dalton. Once the design was complete, finding the right shipyard was easy. The previous Cakewalk had just finished a major refit at Derecktor Florida. The owner knew he had found that the quality craftsmanship and knowledge base that would enable him to build his dream in America. This Cakewalk will set a new standard in excellence. w w w . d e r e c k t o r. c o m “ This is my third new build project (The other two were in Europe) and I’d say that the workmanship here is as good as or better than what is produced in many European yards.” –Bill Zinser, Build Captain of Cakewalk The Yacht Report (Oct 2008) Custom Building Choosing a shipyard – whether abuild new build, repower service project. But we’re equally proud of the people – the people who started the yard, their children and the others who continue with it today. That may be the best testament to what my father began.” –Paul Derecktor Over 250 vessels delivered Paul Derecktor new york Robert E.
