In early July, Samsung Electronics America, Inc. announced its next wave of UHD TV models with the introduction of the F9000 line. They are now available for pre-order as of July 21. Offered in 55- and 65-inch models, the F9000 UHD TVs take home entertainment to a new level by delivering the highest resolution and best-in-class picture quality, regardless of video source. Following in the footsteps of the award-winning Samsung S9 UHD TV introduced earlier this year, the F9000 series offers four times the resolution of Full HD TV for a vivid, crystal-clear picture. The F9000 UHD TV utilizes Samsung’s proprietary Quadmatic Picture Engine, a four-step process including signal analysis, noise minimization, UHD up-scaling, and detail enhancement to seamlessly upconvert SD, HD, or Full HD content to UHD-level picture quality. Both the TV and its software can be upgraded to be compatible with future UHD standards with a separate Evolution Kit. “Revolutionizing the home entertainment viewing experience is a hallmark of the Samsung brand,” said Joe Stinziano, Executive Vice President, Samsung Electronics America. “The F9000 series are Evolutionary TVs that will give consumers great peace of mind in their entertainment investment. Now home entertainment lovers will have the opportunity to truly see and enjoy their favorite shows and movies like never before, in crystal-clear ultra high-definition, and in the beautifully designed 55and 65-inch sizes they demand.” The new models feature Samsung Smart TV, designed to help consumers search less and watch more. The new Smart Hub interface organizes entertainment and content into five convenient panels: On TV, Movies and TV Shows, Social, Apps as well as Photos, Videos and Music. The built-in S Recommendation feature helps customers discover something new to watch, now or next time. And with Smart Interaction, the F9000 UHD TV is brought to life as consumers use hand gestures or voice commands to navigate and browse, creating a new and interactive TV experience. With Samsung’s Precision Black Local Dimming technology, the F9000 UHD TV delivers a much greater increase in contrast and black levels by dimming LEDs in dark areas of the picture, making blacks darker without affecting brighter elements of the picture. It also features Micro Dimming Ultimate, which combines the use of a special algorithm and scanning technology for sharper images and enhanced contrast. The F9000 series comes with 3D technology as well as built-in Wi-Fi and an embedded camera for staying connected with friends. The fast quad-core processor enables true multitasking capabilities between content and apps for a premium Smart TV experience. 1 Samsung Expands Its Ultra High-Definition TV Lineup with the New F9000 Series Samsung Expands Its Ultra High-Definition TV Lineup with the New F9000 Series continued The F9000 UHD TV comes with 2-way 2.2 channels of 70-watt sound, which is more than three times the power of a typical TV. This system provides a dynamic range of sounds for a commanding and outstanding experience to complement the UHD picture. Designed to create an immersive picture, the F9000 UHD TV features Samsung’s award-winning Ultra Slim Bezel design, providing a virtually edgeless picture. The TV design also extends to the rear of the TV with Samsung’s Clean Back design and comes with the stylish Arc Stand -- an eye-catching complement that enhances the interior design of any room. The F9000 is now available for pre-order in the U.S. from select authorized retailers for an estimated retail price of $5,499.99 for the 55-inch model and $7,499.99 for the 65-inch TV. The customer needs to select the auto update option manually, and then the apps will update automatically. 1. In Smart Hub, select the Apps panel, and then select the More Apps button located at the bottom of the screen. 2. Select Options located at the top right of the screen. 10 CE Tech Tips Updating Apps on Samsung 2013 Smart TVs continued 3. Select Auto Update Apps, and then set it to ON. 11 CE Tech Tips Automatically Adjusting the Volume Level on Smart TVs By Paul Kim, Manager, Product Support Engineering Group Cable/Satellite channels, video sources, and video content played through a video streaming application can have different volume levels. To normalize the volume levels, customers can use the Auto Volume function in the Sound Menu. Auto Volume automatically adjusts volume levels by lowering or raising the sound output so that the volume level is the same for all video playing through the streaming application. The Auto Volume function is available on 2012 and 2013 Smart TVs. To turn Auto Volume ON, select ‘Normal’. 2012 Smart TV [Menu>Sound>Speaker Settings>Auto Volume] 2013 Smart TV [Menu>Sound>Speaker Settings>Auto Volume] 12 CE Tech Tips TV Tips: Troubleshooting Networking Issues By Jorge Tavora, Manager, Product Support We receive many calls at Tech Support about troubleshooting network issues. Here is an issue you can resolve without needing to call Tech Support. There are some customers who will not let technicians connect to their wireless networks to determine whether a networking problem is caused by the TV’s Wi-Fi module or their router. To get around this, you may be able to use FoxFi (a free hotspot app) to create a Wi-Fi hotspot on your Smartphone and use it to test the TV’s Wi-Fi module. However, there are carriers that will not allow this. If you can’t set up a hotspot or don’t have a Smartphone, you can use a Wi-Fi Router to test the TV’s Wi-Fi model - and it’s not expensive. In fact, with the new SMART TVs, a Wi-Fi router is mandatory. Always include one with the regular tools you bring to the customer’s home. Here’s how to test a TV’s Wi-Fi module using a hotspot or a router: 1- Activate the external Hot Spot (i.e. “Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot”, “FoxFi”, etc.) on your Smartphone. »» Select the hotspot from the list of networks on the Wireless Network screen on the TV. •• Verify the connection. •• Verify the network status. You can download the FoxFi free app on Droids and other compatible SMART phones. 2- Use an external Wi-Fi Router - very helpful for testing and low cost. Note: No Internet connection is required. The TV only needs to connect to the router. •• Select your router’s name from the list of networks on the Wireless Network screen (for example, Cisco13957). •• Verify the connection: TV to router. If you get a connection to the router, the Wi-Fi Module is OK. 13 CE Tech Tips TV Tips: Troubleshooting Networking Issues continued »» In this test, we just want to see if the TV connects to your router. If YES, the problem is with the customer’s router. If NO, the problem is with the Wi-Fi module. »» Since your router is not connected to the Internet, you’ll see the “Connected to your local network, but cannot connect to the Internet” message, which is normal. (See the arrow in the illustration above). 14 CE Tech Tips HA Tech Tips RS261MD: Frost in the Ice Chute By Wes Sirois, Manager, HA Product Support Subject: Frost in Ice Chute Symptom : Frost and/or ice appears in the ice chute, or on the outside of the ice bucket. Background: Air infiltration occurs at the ice door because the door does not close completely after dispensing ice, allowing frost to form. Factory Solution: The ice door in the lever dispenser assembly has been redesigned with strengthening ribs to provide a more positive seal. All production as of June, 2013 includes the new assembly. New Assembly: 15 HA Tech Tips RS261MD: Frost in the Ice Chute continued Field Solution: For units produced prior to June of 2013, see the serial number chart below: 1. Replace the Assembly Case-Lever Dispenser. Be sure to use the correct color. Model RS261MDWP RS261MDBP RS261MD [PN or RS] Part Number DA97-12095B DA97-12095A DA97-12095C 2. Instruct the customer on the proper use of the water dispenser: When the customer dispenses water, the paddle does not need to be pressed in fully. If the paddle is depressed all the way while dispensing water, the ice door will open and remain open for approximately 16 seconds, allowing the evaporator fan to pull room temperature air into the freezer. The modification was made to reduce the number of screws used on the microwave. However, this modification prevents the Bracket C/Panel from being secured to the control panel. See the next page. 17 HA Tech Tips SMH9151 Assembly Control Panel Modification continued SOLUTION: Seven holes were added to the Bracket C/Panel to allow it to fit on the Assy Control Panel. In addition, the Bracket C/Panel will now come attached to the Assy Control Panel. These changes were applied to SMH9151 production beginning on July 10, 2013. 18 HA Tech Tips Sealed System Ice Maker IR Sensor Testing By Nicholas Webert, Regional Technical Trainer When Samsung created its new sealed system cooled ice maker, it also changed the ice bucket level arm to an IR sensor switch. The emitter for the sensor is located in the ice maker auger assembly next to the room temperature sensor. The IR emitter sends a signal across the top of the ice bucket to a receiver located in the ice maker. If the signal is interrupted by ice, indicating the bucket is full, the ice maker will stop producing ice. If you are on a service call where the ice maker is not making ice, it is important to know how to test whether the emitter is still sending a signal. Fortunately, this is very easy to check. All you need is your Samsung cell phone or any non-IR filter camera. Open your phone and turn on the camera feature. Place the camera eye over the emitter on the auger. If the emitter is sending a signal, you will see a violet colored light in the viewing window as pictured below. If the light is not present, replace the auger assembly. 19 HA Tech Tips Refrigerators: Checking the Compressor Windings on the Inverter Board By Dorian Rua, Assistant Manager, Training When checking the compressor windings, we recommend that you check the windings from the driver board. This is a faster and easier point to check from. The example below shows the RF31FM driver board. When working on a different model, refer to the model’s Fast Track for the specific connector layout or wiring diagram. The connector on the driver board shown in the image below sends an AC/DC signal that tells the compressor to run. Check for resistance across the U-V, U-W, and V-W check points. As long as all three windings measure the same value, you will know that the windings are good. 20 HA Tech Tips HA GSPN Updates By Jeff Brutman, Senior Staff, Publications We encourage you to use our GSPN site to find the latest service bulletins to aid you with your repairs: http://gspn3.samsungcsportal.com/ HA Service Bulletins uploaded to GSPN in July, 2013: Bulletin Number Subject Applicable Models Subject: SMH9151 Assy Control Panel Modification ASC20130715001 Background: The Assy Control Panel has been modified, adding 3 hooks and 4 ribs.
