Burd Keystone Investment Advisors Kenny Ross Automotive continues to be an ardent supporter. In 1965, Founder and former company President, Kenny Ross, joined with ongoing supporter, Dr. Marvin Bellin, and other business leaders to lay the groundwork for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh. Since then, Kenny Ross Automotive has provided considerable financial support to our agency as well as advocacy and community exposure. Beyond the company’s important role, three generations of Ross family members have demonstrated their commitment to our mission through Board membership, volunteerism, and/or fundraising. Kenny’s son Jimmy was Board President and continues to serve on the board, his grandchildren volunteer and one grandchild actually works for the organization in New York City. OUR VISION: All children achieve success in life. OUR MISSION: Provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT: We partner with parents/guardians, volunteers, and others in the community and hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving: »»Higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships »»Avoidance of risky behaviors »»Educational success For 48 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh (BBBS) has made a lasting impact on the youth we serve and the volunteers who help us throughout Allegheny, Washington, and Greene counties. Since our founding, we have empowered thousands of young people and adults to realize lifelong positive changes—changes that exponentially impact families, teachers, colleagues, communities, and future generations. When a “Little” has the opportunity to follow a new path toward academic, social, and community involvement, it enhances our region as a whole. When our adult volunteers connect with young people from divergent geographic, economic, and ethnic backgrounds, they develop a greater sense of awareness. By bridging the demographic gap and breaking down barriers, our matches help bring our region’s population closer together. One of our goals at BBBS is to adapt to the ever-changing needs of our youth and volunteer pool. We have expanded our programs by bringing mentors into the workplace and the schools. We have reached out to a wide array of community organizations to recruit volunteers and continued to expand our network through social media, young professional boards, and other affinity groups. We believe that every individual has the potential to make an impact on our organization, and ultimately, on the city and beyond. Donors, foundations, and corporations are crucial to supporting our programs and enabling us to realize our goals. Our volunteers, partners, Board of Directors, alumni network, families, and other dedicated supporters spread the word about the value of mentoring and the quality and success of our programs. The cumulative, combined effort of all these individuals and groups allows us to make a difference in the lives of young people throughout our three-county service area—helping them make better choices and become achieving, contributing members of society. The following annual report captures just a few examples of the powerful impact of BBBS in our community. We invite you to read and be inspired. Jan S. Glick, MS Chief Executive Officer Daniel K. St. Pierre In its second decade of giving, Tickets for Kids Charities donated 235 event tickets valued at over $6,400. This generous contribution allowed matches to access the following local venues and events: Kennywood Amusement Park, American Idol Live Tour 2012, Mary Poppins – The Musical, Cirque Du Soleil, Black Nativity, Harlem Globetrotters, Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, Pittsburgh Pirates, and PITT Football. For the second consecutive year, Duquesne Light made a significant contribution through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. In previous years, the company sponsored Bowl for Kids’ Sake. At our Annual Holiday Party in December, Duquesne Light’s mascot, Wattley, entertained more than 230 Bigs and Littles as they enjoyed food, crafts, and ice skating at Schenley Park Skating Rink. ROBERTA LONDON, “BIG SISTER OF THE YEAR” IN PENNSYLVANIA Roberta London, Big Sister to Ishemer since 2002, was named Pennsylvania’s “Big Sister of the Year.” At the time the match was made, Ishemer, raised by a single father, had many school absences. Ishemer is now 17 years old and planning to attend college. Said Ishemer’s father, Lee, Roberta has gone “way beyond being a Big Sister” to Ishemer. Over the course of ten years, she has attended Ishemer’s parent-teacher conferences when his father could not, visited him in the hospital in the middle of the night, and purchased clothes for her Little Brother after he and his family suffered a house fire. When Ishemer and his father moved to Butler County, Roberta stuck with him; she routinely drove two hours round trip to meet her Little Brother. Even though he has a family of aunts, uncles, and cousins, Ishemer believes that “Roberta has been the best family besides my dad.” 5989 Penn Circle South Pittsburgh, PA 15206-3828 Phone: 412-363-6100 1-877-YES-BIGS (Toll-Free) Fax: 412-363-6801 biginfo@bbbspgh.org www.bbbspgh.org
